Getting to Know You, June 2018

Recommended Posts

First board game: Monopoly (not the first edition, but not a branded one either)

First War game: A WW I Naval game with similar mechanics to Ironclads! Done by someone in our dorm at college.

First video game: Pong.  Although you could count Space War.

The first game I recall playing was Memory, but I'm sure Candyland and Chutes and Ladders were in the mix very early on.

The first non-roll and move was probably Cribbage?

And the first venture into miniature related games was, of course, HeroQuest.

First board game: probably Monopoly or Sorry!, as my parents were fond of those two.

First board game of my choosing: chess

First computer game: Oregon Trail

First video game: Mario Brothers on NES

First arcade game: probably 1942 or Centipede

First computer game of my choising: Doom

First Mac game: Bolo (with Marathon 2 a close second, but the IT guys got that off the school computers quick!)

Probably tag or hide and seek. Though "Who can sit quietly the longest" was a favorite of my grandmother's when she was babysitting. ::D:

First wargame was Avalon Hill's Blitzkrieg! First miniatures game was something Napoleonic, possibly Column, Line, and Square (aka Column, Line, and Slaughter). First RPG was OD&D.

I used to have a copy of that game.  Got it at a garage sale when I was really young, so the tactics were something I couldn't wrap my head around until much later (probably mid teens)

Uhhhhh....

Something toddler friendly? I can't claim to remember this one.

The first hobby game I learned was some flavor of (A)D&D. I think it was first edition AD&D, but we were very young, and elements of that and Red Box Basic D&D tended to blur together a bit. I can't say for sure when that was, but I know I was playing to the best of my ability to learn and follow rules by age 8.

Actual real game other people have heard of and play: Chess or backgammon, not quite sure which.

Game made up by my father and his friends for toddler me: No knocka down.

Other than tag and hide&seek, I think it was the board game Sorry.

For video games, it would have been Super Mario Bros, or maybe Frogger (my dad had a side job fixing arcade games so we had a few)

OSL and wet blending.

And I think I will wait until I have the more basic skills down a little better

Pickle, maybe. Or War. Or Tag. I don't remember much from Nursery School, so it's hard to say.

Video Game: Super Mario Bros on NES. It was almost DOOM on the N64, but the TV was super dark and since I was a tiny child being somewhere I wasn't supposed to be, I couldn't figure out how to fix that. Probably a good thing.

Board Game: Clue

Not sure it was really a computer game, but we had digital coloring story books on 5 1/2 inch floppy disks. My brother and I got to play those and got to watch my dad play Captain Comic.

The first board games that I remember were Candy Land, Hi HO Cherry-o, and Are You My Mother. I cannot tell you which one came first.

First game I recall learning to play is Yahtzee.  First RPG was Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition with my Father.  His eyes glow green from all the radiation he got in the service.

@TGP Thanks for using my question!

June 19: What's something you wish existed? Does it already exist in a book/show/game?

Thanks, Glitterwolf!

I wish I had a pocket dimension where time didn't pass in the real world, but I could go there to sleep and remain there eternally if I so wished.  Would make a heck of a game night.  Sadly, they exist only in fantasy (as far as I know).

I want to have a well-paying job traveling around hitting stupid people upside the head with a plank...

Not to damage them,  mind you...

But whenever somebody somewhere in the world did something really stupid, I'd pop out and WHAP!... And they'd do a really entertaining Keystone Cops pratfall. And then, a few minutes later, they'd get up again perfectly unharmed and say, "Gee, I must have done something stupid..."

And on a good day, they might actually figure out what it was.

On a bad day, I'd still have the satisfaction of being able to hit stupid people with a plank.

This would be the best job ever.  But you'd need a teleportation device and the Flash and Quicksilver and perhaps even Nightcrawler just to keep up with the bountiful stupidity of the world.  Perhaps contract out Deadpool to assist?

June 20: Do you say tomato or tomato? Are there any similar pronunciations that completely vex you, like when someone says eligible instead of illegible?

Thanks, Pezler!

The male Don (shortened Donald) and the female Dawn.  I pronounce them exactly the same.  One that vexes me when I hear it is Nuclear.  It's pronounced "New-clear," 2 syllables. This "New-cue-lure" three syllable abomination has to be stopped!  (Yes, it really does bother me.)

June 21: What are some fun desk toys or busy knickknacks?

Thanks, husband....
(He says he expects a list of new shinies by the end of the day.)

I have Thanos, Captain America, and Mr. Rogers Funko Pops on my desk.  I just got approval on a poster for my wall.  They are debating on the "public" facing wall.

June 22: Are there any content creators (videos, blogs, etc) that you follow online?

Yes.  Blogs mostly, mostly wargames, and some painters.  Add in a few webcomics and you've got my mix.

Honestly, I've been experimenting with a style from an OLD 'eavy metal style.  I didn't get a chance last weekend, and this weekend is the dreaded annual trip for the Elder Spawn, so this weekend won't look good either.

Whew!  All caught up!  It's been a busy time of storms, trees on houses and through rooves, car accidents and hospitals for my family!  Sorry for the EXTRA long post!

Have it create a convention center and have it connect to the transporters so I can suddenly bring all the Reaper people to the Reapercon Eternal. This can only result in hilariousness.

Welcome to Getting to Know You, December 2018 Edition.

The rules as they currently stand:

      1. Every day, or so (unless I am out or ill or something) I will post a question.
1.5. Should I be unable to post a question for the day a crack team of deputy quisitors, former quisitors, and random forum members are all chomping at the bit to step in and post one...
      2. In theory there is a 24 hour span to answer that question before the next question is posted.
2.5. (Rule 2 is the most frequently ignored rule.)
      3. Questions are going to be posted between 8:00 hours and 13:00 hours GMT (UK / Europe Time: some Zero Dark Thirty hour for US time zones)
      4. Everyone is encouraged to suggest future questions to be posted via PM to me... (Or Talespinner, he started it.)
      5. You do not have to answer every question to play...
      6. If a question is TMI or N/A simply wait for the next question.. ..or post that you decline to answer (clues regarding why can be fun...unless TMI).
      7. Weekend questions will usually take the form of two or three day quests, starting on Friday or Saturday.

December will begin ^ with such a question because the month begins on a Saturday.

Minivember is here once again! I know that today is the 5th so I'm going to have to play a little catch up as I was on vacation until yesterday evening. Now I need to get started painting so this will probably be a shorter intro post than previous years. You may ask why the title says "The Last." Well because this is the last year that I am going to be doing Minivember. Next year I'll have a new fun thing but it will be in October instead of November because of how busy this time of year is for me. And I know that the holidays are part of the challenge but it's getting to be too much of a challenge.

This year I'm going to be painting minis from Shadows of Brimstone that I have not yet finished. My goal (like every year) is to paint at least thirty (30) unique minis, one (1) for each day. While I've reached this goal in the past I'm going to push myself a little further this year and try to get all of one type of the mini painted. Some of them have up to six (6) of the same mini. I chose to paint this because I want to play the game again and this is a great time to get it done. While this is not all of the SoB minis that I have to do it is a good chunk of them.

Anyway, here's this year's calendar and I'll be posting photos as soon as I can.

I thought this year would be my last ReaperCon. Somewhere along the line, I forgot the joy of speed painting and just painting miniatures for tabletop quality that I can use for gaming, etc. Somewhere along the line miniature painting became something that had to 'wow' or be appropriate for competition.

I rediscovered my love of miniature painting at the Speed Painting, Sophie Says, and Paint by Die Roll tables at ReaperCon 2018; having 45-60 minutes to paint a miniature was such an exhilarating challenge and I present to you my fun!!!

Barnabus the pirate was a Paint by Die Roll.
      Esme was a Speed Paint.
      Judas was a Sophie Says.
      Michelle was a Speed Paint.
Ogre was a Paint by Die Roll.
Sekhmet was a Paint by Die Roll.
      Trista was a Sophie Says.
