Getting To Know You July

Recommended Posts

*Takes the Quisitor Robes out of the dry cleaner's bag, shakes them out, and slips them on*

The obligatory rulze posting:

1. Every day, or so (unless I am out or ill or something) I will post a question.

1.5. Should I be unable to post a question for the day a crack team of deputy quisitors, former quisitors, and random forum members are all chomping at the bit to step in and take my place...

2. In theory there is a 24 hour span to answer that question before the next question is posted.
2.5. (Rule 2 is the most frequently ignored rule.)
3. Questions are going to be posted between 6AM and 8AM EST
4. Everyone is encouraged to suggest future questions to be posted via PM to me.
5. You do not have to answer every question to play...
6. If a question is TMI or N/A simply wait for the next question.. ..or post that you decline to answer (clues regarding why are always fun).
7. Weekend questions may take the form of two or three day challenges, often starting on Fridays.

I'm going to go walk the dogs, and then post the first question of the month...

Question for Sunday, July 1st:  We're halfway through the year! If you had a goal for the year, are you still on track? If not, what's your next step?

  • Lose weight - lost a bit, want to lose more.

The big goal for my year is to move house. Not quite happened yet although there has been a little progress in the last week.

My goal this year has been narrowing my art focus to portraiture. In addition to the painting class I've been taking for 5 semesters now, I've taken an online course and am enrolled in another online course, as well as various adjunct lessons and books, all focused on head drawing. I'm bringing in a color course in a couple months to improve my portrait painting.

I just won the regional fine art exhibit Best in Show with my first original (and third overall) charcoal portrait, so objectively I'm on track. In reality, I'm just scratching the surface of a very deep mine of information. But I'm pretty happy with my progress thus far and confident in my plan for the rest of the year.

I'm a believer in plans and skills development. Figure out what you're really interested in, then chart a course to get there. Constantly evaluate your progress and target your weak spots, don't turn a blind eye to them.

My 2018 goals were to heal, regain my strength through exercise, and learn to sleep.  Healing took the longest, exercising was the hardest.  It's tough to get off the couch when you haven't in a long time and your body doesn't really want to.  Sleeping still requires chemical assistance, but the results have been good.  I'm close to where I want to be.

Hobby-wise I wanted to fix my eyes, by no lenses or laser can fix what I got. :(

Major goal was to clean up my farm, get rid of some problems and get things more organised. So far it's going ok. Don't have the time, money or energy to do it all but we're chipping away at things. The major jobs are getting done on time and some of the things that have been irritating me for years are getting dealt with.

If you do figure out how to sleep could you pass along the technique? It's a problem for me now. Part of it is having a less than year old child but even when sh'es good I still sleep awful. Last night was a good example. Dead tired, went to bed late because baby was having "fun" and then just couldn't get comfortable. Tossed and turned for hours. Woke up at my normal time even though I could have slept in because that's how my body is. Now I'm sitting here feeling crappy with a headache and no energy.

I don't know if this helps, (and it may sound so obvious as to be silly,) but consider a new mattress on your bed. I suffered much the same symptoms you described until I invested in a new, good quality mattress. The improvement in the quality of the sleep I was getting was instantaneous.

I have limited my goals to:

1. Get up.

2. Survive

3. Go back to bed

Thus far I have managed to do all three on a daily basis.

You also manage to make some amazingly weird and wonderful mushrooms! (and other assorted oddities).

I don't think I made any definitive goals for this year. Other than surviving all the BS.

I don't have any goals. You can't put Chaotic Good in a box!

I did; losing my job and needing to find another one has necessitated that the plan gets pushed back for a while ( We wanted to buy a house ).

I don't quite remember if I set any proper goals, but some of them are doing okay, others could use more work...

- more spare cash per cheque! ...We're getting there.

- paint/hobby daily.  I'll say on track because of the second half.  Some days I'm more in the mood to game, others it's photography related.

- one mini per week. Uhhhh... Yeah, I'm at like six or seven this year, I might be able to keep this one I might not

Acquiring a house is still three years or so away.  It would have been sooner but one plan that would have freed up a lot of money every cheque didn't really pan out.

In the end, I'm happy, and I so agree with @malefactus and the three core things of get up, survive, and whatnot ^_^

I follow all the advice you'll find on the web: dark, cool bedroom,  no electronics, breathing, etc.  New mattress, support pillows, white noise, etc.  Some herbal teas now and then, I find valerian does it for me... sometimes.  Sticking to a routine bedtime and wake time.  That may be hard for you with a baby or toddler.  This last year or so I have been working to identify the reasons I'm not sleeping and talking to my doctor.  I found out sleep anxiety is a real thing, getting so anxious about not being able to sleep that I can't sleep, and now I have a prescription for that. It does help, not just because it's a sedative, but because I do sleep and feel better (and I can stay in a routine), and I can see that I am able to sleep and that helps my anxiety. Hoping that one day I'll be able to do it without pills.

If I wake up in the night or can't get settled I get back up and go get some water, or sit quietly and do some breathing, or pet the cats and try to calm down.  Flopping around in bed worrying about it just makes it worse.  Just hit restart, and do the bedtime power down routine again.   I cannot just shut the lights off and go to sleep.  It takes me an hour or more to wind down and be ready to sleep.  Herbal tea helps. I've been journaling like mad in the evenings, trying to empty my head of disturbing thoughts.  Do what works for you. Hot bath, soft music, meditative time. It can be hard to bring a body to stillness and rest.

Likewise, if you feel tired and crappy now, find your energy triggers. Sunlight, fresh air, caffeine, energetic music, etc.  A 10-20 min power nap can help, but longer than that messes with your sleep clock.

Welcome to Getting to Know you, September 2018 Edition.

Here are the roolz, copied directly from @Crowley's post from last month

The most important thing is to have fun! In fact, its now mandatory

July IS over, but I HAVE MORE STUPID QUESTIONS!!

Now, as a reminder, the obligatory rulze posting:
