And Winter came – a 15mm WWII winter project (Sister's trying to airbrush)

And it's me again ... yay.

Could it be that I found my joy in painting again? I don't konw - to be honest - but a rather unconventional project forced me to do something about having stopped painting for most of the time.

Recently, people in my area started to go with 15mm Flames of War again. Maybe you remember from my Speed Builds thread that I was given a 15mm Late War Fallschirmjäger aarmy. But to be honest - everyone else decided to do midwar. So I had to do it, too.

And in accordance with my Soviet Girls, this topic should be winter themed.

Therefore I decded to do the Russian Front (Ostfront) winter scenario of the years 1942/1943 and 1943/1944, as the varity of German forces during that time was highest.

I already have got quite a good force. Still need some tanks, though. But the army I have got is already enough to take part in smaller fights and allows me to upgrade or downgrade my army if noone's actually playing the game.

But it also means I have got to convert a lot of stuff.

I mean ... I don't want to do this:

I want to do this

jykm-2xy-1406.jpg

And most important: I want to learn how to use my airbrush properly. That means: Train, train, train and watch a lot of tutorials.

My goal is to finish a formidable force by then end of August!

Well then - AUF GEHT'S!

WWII in color

Originally I was tasked with a work that should keep me away and busy for at least two weeks, but suddenly I was told I wasn't needed anymore and so I went home.

Okay. No problem. Time for me to start.

After watching some tutorials by Doctor Fausts Painting Clinic, Andy's Hobby Headquarters and PLASMO, I started working on the first few vehicles.

Basecoat:

After having basecoated the vehicles and letting them dry, I continued using a darker grey ... maybe not dark enough ...

jykm-2yg-1308.jpg

Really not dark enough - time for me to choose a darker tone and try again ...

And because I had some fun, I tried to apply two layers of highlights.

After that I did some work on the equipment ...

And that's where we will continue later!

Cover! Nein - Color!

Yesterday, we stopped here:

jykm-2yl-efff.jpg

As today I was able to finish all the work that was left regarding brush painting, it was time to go on a little further. After varnishing the vehicles, the decals were applied.

And some washes and pigments later they looked like this:

Now it is time to apply snow camo. Hopefully they won't look that dirty afterwards ... you know ... I have no idea what I am doing here ...

I think you do know what you're doing.

That armor looks pretty good, can't wait to see how the snow camo will look on them.

Military models were my first love.

There is something fascinating about tanks, halftracks and artillery..

To be honest ... I really didn't know what I was doing. I just tried some stuff. And ... it worked. Yay!

Yeah. Military models also were my first love. Though as I am from the "Waterkant", my first real model was Revells "Bismarck" I don't have got the ship anymore, but I still have got the box art :-D

Colours of Magic

jykm-2yv-1400.jpg

As I am currently at the brink of going back to work and being home next weekend again, I decided to not let the chance slip away and continued painting on the vehicles. A lot of work, indeed! But a few hours and some aggressions later, I had sucessfully ...

1) painted
2) washed
3) weathered
4) dull coated

all vehicles ...

Okay. I have to admit: I forgot some things ... for example painting the drivers ... I will correct that next weekend. Haha.

But apart from that, they look great so far ...

Currently I have got some of the crews on the table. Let's see if they will be a success or failure in the end ...

And the next few vehicles ... Let's see how they will work out in the end.

That's it for now. But I will soon be back with some more smooth sailin'

Until then!

My personal highlight of the day!

Panzer_III_Winter_Ostfront.jpg

I didn't have got as much time as I wanted during the weekend, so progress was rather slow. But that's not a problem.

Almost all the vehicles have been basecoated and received their highlighting. That leaves only one unit to be finished ...

jykm-309-364a.jpg

jykm-308-0b0c.jpg

Currently I am working on the Tiger. I think I will finish him first up to the point where he matches all the other units and then I will finish them all in one go. That should be easiest..

Currently I am working on the infantry and the guns. Let's see how many of them I will finish until the end of month.

I know the feeling, so much to do, so little time.

As long as it is fun it's good.
