Forests in fantasy roleplaying games are dark places, full of secrets. With this project, we bring the Old Margreve to the 5th Edition of the world's most popular RPG. The Margreve is an ancient, enchanted forest that defends itself from those who come to cut its timber, poach its creatures, or steal its magic. Within its borders the Old Ways are strong, the word of the druids carries great weight, and griffons, dragons, and stranger creatures nest and hunt, undisturbed by humans, dwarves, or other lordlings.

Until your adventuring party shows up. Then things get really interesting.

The Margreve Kickstarter offers three main elements:

1) the Tales of the Old Margreve adventure campaign hardcover for the GM, with adventures from levels 1 to 10

2) a Margreve Player's Guide softcover book of new player options, including new races, druid and ranger subclasses and tools, backgrounds, and forest-themed spells.

3) (if unlocked) a set of thick cardboard standups, the Margreve Pawns, which are similar to those created for Tome of Beastsand the Creature Codex. Here is a small sample of what that would look like; we anticipate producing 150 to 200 pawns (depending on stretch goals).

Together with some book-expanding stretch goals, this project provides new deep-forest character options and a full sequence of adventures to draw adventurers into the wilderness and keep them on their toes.

WHY KICKSTART THIS?

Initially we debated this as a softcover adventure collection, but we soon realized that it was large enough and compelling enough to make into a hardcover volume playable in 5th Edition fantasy campaigns, together with a player supplement. Why not go big?

Kobold Press is doing something a little different with its digital offerings this time. We're putting our effort into the two print books, and possibly a custom set of pawns—and digitally, full sets of virtual tabletop (VTT) files. That means that we'll have the Old Margreve adventures and source material available on Roll20 and on Fantasy Grounds shortly after the hardcover and softcover volumes ship.

With terrific map management, full suites of digital tokens, pre-set monster stats, and more, virtual tabletops make it easier than ever to just sit down and play. The VTT packages for the Old Margreve will be extensive and include everything provided in the print edition—plus the flexibility and speed of online play. We're partnering directly with Roll20 and Fantasy Gournds, two of the leading VTT companies, to make these digital versions complete and powerful.

Contributors

The designers on this project include lead designer Matt Corley plus contributing designers Dan Dillon, Jon Sawatsky, James Introcaso, and Wolfgang Baur

They build on earlier Margreve work by Richard Pett, Ben McFarland, Tim & Eileen Connors, Dan Voyce, Michael Furlanetto, Wolfgang Baur, and others.

Shipping costs from the US to anywhere outside North America have risen sharply in recent years, so we are once again partnering with groups in Canada, in the EU, and likely in Australia (depending on the volume of backers there), and if so then Kobold Press will pay customs and import duties for those packages.

Our best guess for those Canada-friendly and EU-friendly costs right now are roughly $22 shipping for Canada and roughly $30-and-a-bit for shipping to the EU. We do not have an Australia estimate yet.

To calculate shipping to your location from the US, you can use the US Postal Service calculator and assume a Medium size flat rate box:  https://postcalc.usps.com/

The Pathfinder version of The Old Margreve is excellent - and really fun to spring on nine and ten year old players.

I've run with the setting twice - once with kids, once with grown ups.

Just passed $50K, which unlocked not one but TWO Stretch Goals!

Even better, the next Stretch Goal is pretty darn cool:
Decades ago, when the game of D&D was young, a man named Dennis Sustare created a class that lives on to this day: the Druid. Indeed, Gary Gygax was not the creator of the druid class, but we have good news. Dennis Sustare has agreed to join us in creating brand-new spells, items, and even a new subclass for the 5th edition druid. New druid material by the guy who created the class for D&D? Only the mystical forest can hold such wonders.

We want to make this happen, but we can only do it with your support. Help us break through to this mind-bogglingly cool stretch goal!

850 backers and counting!!

$55 Stretch Goal reached!! Dennis Sustare, creator of the original Druid class, is creating brand-new spells, items, and even a new subclass for the 5th edition druid.

Learn more from the man himself!

      About
Early game prototype In this hardcore adventure you will be tasked with completing 10 levels of a hellish dungeon. Under your control is a character with 9 types of stats, that have a huge impact on your gameplay and walkthrough style. It doesn’t matter what character class you choose - you will always have an option to respec your hero. For example, you can start off playing as a mage, but spec it into a tank, or vise versa. By defeating enemies you will receive experience and loot that will allow you to level up and create your unique hero.
Hero miniatures Hero miniatures Townsfolk miniatures You will also be able to increase your stats by equipping armor, accessories, and weapons. In order for the hero to be able to use an item his stats will need to pass the use requirement threshold. New items are available for purchase in town or can be looted from monsters. Main goal of the story mode is to reach to final level of the dungeon. Each level hold a quest mission, new items, and tougher enemies.
Heroes facing off against Balaurus All enemies in the game are automated, their behavior, tactics, and stats are described monster cards. Enemy actions are to be done by the player that has drawn the monster card.
During your playthrough you will encounter horrendous monsters and bosses that will challenge you with their tactical and strategic options.

      Backstory
Hi! My name is Tsuchitana, I’m the Game Director of Borderhaime Chronicles and I want to introduce the game that we’ve been working on for the past 2 years.
Since early childhood I’ve been a huge fan of video games, especially RPGs (the original Diablo will forever be dear to my heart). Almost 10 years ago I discovered the 4th edition of D&D and I completely fell in love with tabletop games. That’s when the idea of creating my own tabletop game came to life.
Juggling my day job I started to work on Borderhaime in my spare time, aiming to create a game that would encompass everything that I loved in video and tabletop games in a single box. After about 6 months I had completed designing the game on paper and started to build an early prototype out of a shoe box and improvised materials (we’ll try to post a few pics of it in our updates). I let a couple of close friends try out the game and they absolutely loved it. At that stage I realized that this could be more than a fun side-project and invited a few close friends to help out.
Kickstarter photo session in progress After a few more months of work we made a crazy decision — to quit our jobs and focus on bringing this project to life. Once we secured the help of our friends in the US we began preparations for launching Borderhaime on Kickstarter. After 24 months of hard work and sleepless nights, dozens of focus groups and playtests, we’ve finally printed a prototype of the game that in our opinion brings something new to the table for every tabletop game fan. Please, let us share our dream with you!
      Why Kickstarter?
We started development of Borderhaime in 2016 part time. We've been full time, living off our savings, since January 2018. For our 12 member team we’ve come pretty far and are about 85% of the way in development and have printed a working prototype. While we've come a long way, there's still a lot of work left to do and we need funding to start mass production. In order for us to continue development and keep creative control we need to ask for your help.
      Guinness World Record Contender
After completing the early game prototype and seeing the amount of content that it includes, we've decided to apply for a Guinness World Record in the category board game with the most content without reiteration.
