Women in Horror 2019 : Gemma Files (Hasslefree)

Recommended Posts

I suppose another option would be to go for transparent stockings and do some lacey stuff. Makes less sense for knee highs but...I dunno. Or leopard print-y stuff.

Not finding any vintage knee high images.

I'm trying to think of what I should do for the ugly sweater? Tree of Despair?  Cephalopo (there are much cooler ones than what I spoiled below)? Evil Dead?

I'm finding these as examples. The think that sucks is that so much will be blocked in the front, and it might not be clear what the front is or beyond my ability. Also no idea what is on the back .

Instead of copying the sweater directly as it is, could you shrink the Evil Dead skull down, and have it as smaller repeating skulls that wrap around the exposed sweater? Like under her arm and going from belly around to her flank?  You could do it again across what is exposed on her chest, to give it the feel that the sweater is just lines of the same image.

Of course, it's more work because you have to repeat the design...

I'm honestly not sure if I could paint skulls that small that still read as skulls. I could make my own I guess and put the skull on the back and fake the front from the other one.

Find someone who plays 40K, the generic Space Marine decal sheet has several skulls on it. If no one around has one, PM me and I will mail you one. PS I like the idea of the slinky stockings...

I went Docs. I may change it but I'm liking things so far. Damn those glasses are tiny. The eyes are going to be hard, but I need something to frame them. Not sure how to reduce the frame AND make the eyes big enough. Also need to re-add forehead skin tone so shes not wearing a helmet goggles combo :(

Current status

This afternoon & evening's plans include boots: soles, laces, stitching,  highlights (I'm going to keep the patent bling), eyelets(maybe).

Skin shading  and maybe some highlights? Forehead & cleaning up the glasses. It's been freezing rain for 6 hours this morning (no light), and tomorrow  I'm going to see baby & stroller movie ( Miss Bala) and the other half is doing a grad professionalization workshop so i get solo care for the evening. That means Friday I do eyes.

Skirt: shadows and maybe a few more highlights, but it's supposed to be this color.

Sweater. Just the chains down the arms today

Book: title in gold ("Hex"). Then i go looking for drawings in old Scandinavian or babylonian grimoires for stuff to put on the pages (approximately) later. I would like to be mostly done Friday.

So I did some skin work bright skin shadow 1 rosy skin 1 dusky skin highlight 1 for shadows and rosy skin for main. These ate my first "real" eyes, but there's no way I'm getting a pupil in that space at the moment. Later today I'll I've it a coat of matte medium as a minor protective barrier.

I added some of the lighter skirt shades with the skin tone for the lipstick.

Tiny bit of highlighting for the socks.

I did "places" (looks like a grey smudge, so... and I have no idea what this was auto corrected from) and book title. It looks clearer in hand.

Glue works. Bottle doesn't  waiting for spill to dry so cats won't get stuck by being nosy. Will have to buy acetone tomorrow and hope it doesn't kill the mat.

Sorry, I wasn't diligent in reading through earlier posts and missed this. Hopefully I'm not too late.

My cutting mat had an encounter with a bit of Tenax plastic weld (main ingredient methyl ethyl ketone, chemically similar to acetone). Only a slight amount spilled, but this is the result.

mat-meets-mek.jpg.a6b337b14802abf8cfe8de609d2a3449.jpg

It's a nice hard bit of plastic now, no more self-healing. I'm not sure what to use that won't also attack your cutting mat.

That aside, I'm heading to the library this weekend to look up this author. Any suggestions or a must-read?

Good to know about the mat. I'm going to be able to pry a few things off,  and I'll try lightly wiping it with cloth with drop of acetone and we'll see about the rest.

Re Files, it depends on your tastes.

Experimental Film is really highly regarded found film horror. The Hexslinger trilogy is queer+weird western and Central American myth.

We will all go down together is a mosaic novel about a coven of witches. Then there's 4 collections of shorts, 2 from the 2nd half of 2018 (the others are probably oop, but available digitally). Chizine ebooks are available on Overdrive, which might be easier to find? I dont know where you are but small press genre doesn't physically get into a ton of libraries around here.I'm lucky enough to live near the specialist library.

I think the only mini more challenging for me size-wise has been the nymph from the old metal learn to paint kits.

I tried doing various pointilism sweater elements and none is really visible. Also, the sweater now looks like a leather jacket. That's not a bad thing it's just not what I was trying to do. I would probably draw the elements another time, then use dots to highlight and shade them. Things are just too messy. I totally think I could rock this on a giant, or larger scale mini.

I also tried copying some occult stuff onto a page, and it's just a bit small for me too.

Face has been protected. I will do another coat in a bit, then try to clean up the eyes. Then I have to decide if theres anything more within  my ability to do.

I tried putting an iris in but it's too small.

I did a bit of an eye touch up and now I'm moving to the base. I just glued a backing piece. next in drill a hole, then glue the mini down. There's a big gap between the bottom of the feet and base, I havent yet figured out how I'll deal with that. I might just do some heavy gel medium over a painted floor and hope it doesn't look weird.

This is my version of Grond from Hasslefree Miniatures. I've had the figure for a while but never got around to him. I can't really tell why I picked him up now (might have been that I wanted something to try my Valejo steel color on), but after I started I had trouble putting him down. I'm really happy with how he turned out, and with very little resistance as well. I had trouble with the eyes. I would have preferred a "normal" straight ahead stare, but every time I filled the left eye it had him looking to his right. After three attempts with the same result I figured it was meant to be.

And so it begins... floorplans and foamcore. I couldnt find the post where I originally shared the link to floorplans, but a quick Google search turned up a version with BASEMENT! Now it all makes sense. I'll be doing a variation of the horizontal (top) layout with added stacks in the basement (and smaller lecture room). This will be the setting for my Gemma Files diorama.
I will be doing fancy paper "wallpaper" on the inside. Stained popsicle sticks wood floors on the main, and concrete on the basement (tile bathrooms) with carpet in the staff and lecture rooms. I intend for it to be playable, with separate floors (and roof).  I'm debating FANCY openable windows. Brownstone, with tar roof and stone trim.
I went with the built in size constraints of the folding presentation board on purpose.

I was absent from here for much of 2018 (starting mid-August 2017), but that doesn't mean I wasn't painting. I hope to post a bunch of pics over the next week detailing all the minis I painted before August 2018. March featured a ton of stuff for convention GMing and I also painted a bunch for Tomb of Annihilation. And just whatever I felt like.
I'm going through stuff elsewhere to see what's been done and soon I'll be posting the list of minis (and also linking to other show-off threads).
