Women in Horror 2019 : Gemma Files (Hasslefree)

Recommended Posts

My backing popped off the base as soon as I tried to drill into it. Now I need to hope dollarama has cork tiles in- they are inconsistent, or I have no way to base the mini until I get home in.. May? Also makes photos impossible.

Yeah, I hate slotted bases/tabs on minis.

I am definitely liking not-velma.  its a nice bit of work so far.  I was going to suggest flexing and peeling your mat, that is usually how i get CA off of mine and about the only thing that works.  Acetone has a tendency to destroy the mat.

In the more blurry photos you first showed, it looked like you had her in motorcycle leathers, complete with studs and a gang patch on the back.  Now i am going to have to chase down the mini and give that a try.  Call it bookworm-biker. ::D:

Keep up the good work!

I was thinking when you were thinking about possibly doing the fancy stockings that it would be fairly straightforward to make her look like she was wearing high boots. Might be something for biker-not-Velma mini.

She is wearing high boots?!

I found some cork, but trivets. It will be messy and take work

also debating a floor anti-scuff sticker as "carpet" on top.

Just putty the lines on the socks to make a knee high boot.

Well i have 2 bases drying, hopefully one can hold up to pinning. I have zero interest in doing a bunch of cork carving.

I love that sweater! Beautiful work.

I definitely feel like I know how to do it better next time. I'm happy with the results even though I didn't really succeed in what I was trying to do.

Man, it sucks noticing a mold line on the side of the leg at this stage. Seriously not visible in person. I'm leaving it for that reason.

Show off will have to wait until I have the library done and I can do my little photo-montage. I have... 18 days. That's doable. Maybe.

for general carpeting at that scale I prefer to use the short velvet ribbon, the stuff that has a really short knap and looks matte instead of silky?  makes a great carpet and comes in a whole bunch of colors and patterns.  I like the surface of the anti-scuff pad, but I think it makes her stand a little high.  Maybe cut it in half?

I do like the sweater and how the socks came out too.  the rubber boots are a nice touch.

Yeah. The carpet is high, but it's staying there... with glue. I'd probably use felt if I were at home. I just laugh every time I see it.

Anyway, the mini is tiny, this will just make her more even with other minis.

Well, when you go for plush carpeting, go for the best!  I've been reading an urban fantasy where the carpet of one of the major characters is describe as so plush it was like walking through sand on the beach.  The protagonist then goes on to describe how his shins were killing him by the time he reached the desk.

I do think the mini came out really well.  The sweater is excellent!

I was trying to find out her more well-known works, or if anything had been adapted into something I might have seen. Wiki doesn't always give complete bibliographies with the popularity of the work, often just career highlights. Was hoping her entry might be a bit more on the fuller side.

Maybe I'll check one of her works out from the library.

This is my version of Grond from Hasslefree Miniatures. I've had the figure for a while but never got around to him. I can't really tell why I picked him up now (might have been that I wanted something to try my Valejo steel color on), but after I started I had trouble putting him down. I'm really happy with how he turned out, and with very little resistance as well. I had trouble with the eyes. I would have preferred a "normal" straight ahead stare, but every time I filled the left eye it had him looking to his right. After three attempts with the same result I figured it was meant to be.

And so it begins... floorplans and foamcore. I couldnt find the post where I originally shared the link to floorplans, but a quick Google search turned up a version with BASEMENT! Now it all makes sense. I'll be doing a variation of the horizontal (top) layout with added stacks in the basement (and smaller lecture room). This will be the setting for my Gemma Files diorama.
I will be doing fancy paper "wallpaper" on the inside. Stained popsicle sticks wood floors on the main, and concrete on the basement (tile bathrooms) with carpet in the staff and lecture rooms. I intend for it to be playable, with separate floors (and roof).  I'm debating FANCY openable windows. Brownstone, with tar roof and stone trim.
I went with the built in size constraints of the folding presentation board on purpose.

I was absent from here for much of 2018 (starting mid-August 2017), but that doesn't mean I wasn't painting. I hope to post a bunch of pics over the next week detailing all the minis I painted before August 2018. March featured a ton of stuff for convention GMing and I also painted a bunch for Tomb of Annihilation. And just whatever I felt like.
I'm going through stuff elsewhere to see what's been done and soon I'll be posting the list of minis (and also linking to other show-off threads).
