Winter is here: February 2019 Goals

Recommended Posts

Last month I finished a lot. And today just made things more interesting seeing as Forbidden Fortress arrived today.

For February:

  • Mail out Frost Giant Queen since I have a winner!
  • Start and finish my mini swap mini.
  • Work on the two driders I have in progress.
  • Start cleaning, assembling, and prepping Forbidden Fortress. This won't happen for a couple of days because I just ordered 8 oz of super glue, so that needs to get here first.
  • Uhhh, work on SoB wave 2 that I /still/ haven't finished. (Wanted that done /before/ today.)
  • I want to pick up Ma'al but that probably won't happen for a while.
  • Start printing my Maiden Boat and make a WIP thread when I start it.

That's...more than I intended but I don't expect to really get all of it done. I'm expecting the first 4 will get at least somewhat done. It's a short month, why did I make such a long list?

ETA: Somehow prepare for Bones 4?

The months almost half over and I've been thinking about what I wanted for goals while plugging away at the Bones Graveyard fencing. Sick wife and kids has meant I didn't get as much hobby time in as normal. Also still waiting for a temperature control switch for my foam cutter.

Came up with a mix I like for doing washes on terrain and made a small bottle of it.

Finished the graveyard fence last night just need to give it a shot of varnish when it's not -25-30 C.

Assembled and prepped a Frostgrave warband using the new female soldiers. Really like some of those minis.

So goals for the rest of the month,

Paint the Frostgrave girls.

Figure out what I need to make and paint for the Rangers of Shadowdeep Burning Light Campaign and work on it.

Whenever I get my foam cutter working make some ruins.

Paint my Frostgrave cultists if I get time.

February:

- Sculpt two figures. Nothing fancy. I won't make characters I'm attached to and then get frozen because they're not even close to how I pictured. Just plain people practice.

- I'd like to get some basing done on Ma'al.

- A friend bought a pirate mini on the Reaper site, so the next step is to have him come over and paint it!

My friend is coming over to paint in about 30 minutes!

I've been practicing basing on a couple other dragons so I'll be familiar with the process when working on Ma'al.

I haven't started sculpting those figures yet because I'll know they'll need to be boring, plain people and a giant dragon is just more fun to work on. ::D:

February Goals:

Finish reading Waterdeep Dragon Heist.

Paint 15 miniatures

- Including 5 minis to be used for WD:DH

Make a list of all minis I'll need for this module

Create / Print all maps I expect to need for chapter 1 of the module

I want to start running in March. That's the plan.

Good thing I checked on this because I forgot that part of my goal is the 5 minis for WD:DH, I havent been thinking about that and I prepped a bunch of models ready for painting today- none with the intention of using for this. I dont know what's wrong with me that whatever I want to paint is never what I need for a game!

I'm also nowhere near finishing the book and had ALSO totally forgotten about the map part of this goal! JEEZ! I do have one map printed.

Finished photographing the spacefuture folks and the Russian pulp faction!
Feb goals: one final push on that orc shaman, and get the circus personnel painted to tabletop standard. They are coming along swiftly, though I would love some feedback/C&C.

Finish at least one twelve figure unit (two would be better)

Add something to the 1/72 scale plastic Portable Fantasy project

Paint enough Burrows and Badgers figures to fill out a third war band and fill out the war band forms (that translates to two or three new ones...)

Paint a standard bearer for my Ghost Archipelago crew.

Mid-month check-in time:  I had the day off yesterday, and finished my unit of 12 ancient scruffy Minifigs orcs, so that's one goal down.  I have added some 1/72 NPCs, and hope to get a few more done, so that's two...

The B&B figures have been primed, at least, and so has the banner bearer.

Sudden change of priorities after slowly puttering on terrain this month. Got asked to run a demo of any mini game on Friday. Decided to go with Frostgrave because it's fairly simple, 4 people can play on a relatively small area and I have a lot of stuff ready for it. Found out that even though I have a lot of suitable stuff I still need to paint more to have 4 fully painted starting warbands. So now I'm going to try and paint 10 minis tomorrow and Friday before the game night. That's not so bad considering I'm taking 40 minis and enough terrain to make a tightly packed 3'x3' table.

So cultists are #1 right now with a couple minis for another warband.

I did figure out what I needed for Shadowdeep and have been working on it but lots to do yet.

Almost finished 3 of the girls but they just got dropped lower in priority.

Stinking switch for foam cutter still hasn't arrived so no fun there.

Going to change my goals around a bit to make up for January's shortcomings.

  • Finish the 20 Mantic revenant unit. It's about 5-10% painted, but the color scheme is already established so I think this is achievable. Nice tabletop unit is all I'm going for.

That's it. Anything else I accomplish is bonus.

I have to throw in the towel for this month. Hand/arm specialist wants me to stop doing any repetitive movements to see ease any strain on my entire arm until I get a scan done, which is Thursday. So again I fail to meet my goal.

In the epic battle of man versus mini, another month goes to mini...

Finished enough cultists and a couple other minis for the starter warbands.

Painted a bunch of odds and ends for terrain for the Shadowdeep campaign.

Painted a touch on some more of the girls but never finished the first ones yet.

No foam cutter switch yet.

Not bad for a month that wasn't the best for hobby time for me.

Didn't do so hot last month, but let's fire it up in these cold, blizzardy times....

  • Progress on each of my "main" WIP threads, and spend at least two painting sessions working on various things - Furiously Fluffy Howling Hounds, Wyrmgear, and my Skaven
  • Start Ritterlich CAV WIP, and of course get some work done on said minis!
  • Aim for completing the first RPChallenge bonus challenge, even if I don't have a "shelf", nor do I consider WIPs that have gone on for a long time shameful ::P:
  • Figure out a mini for the year RPChallenge... challenge.  I have a few front runners, but haven't really decided yet (it probably won't be a CAV though)
  • Quite possibly give the second RPChallenge bonus challenge a shot - I did have fun finger painting a skeleton, after all.
  • Greenstuff work on Wyrmgear and/or Minotaur Demon Lord
  • Work on Sir Forscale because, well, I have an idea or two and I want to do it! ^_^;;;;

Hmmmm, for overall progress...  Well, I didn't get as much painting in as I wanted, but I did get in multiple sessions on FFHH and my Unrelenting Tide, so I'm saying that's close enough....  Ritterlich CAV thread didn't happen, although some progress here and there has happened.  Probably should start the thread, as I'd like to get these guys built up, and mostly painted before KS3 arrives.

- RPChallenge...  If I take pics tonight, I'll be at 2/8, so not quite there for the first two months, but I have a lot of minis that are in the "close to being finished" stages, so there's a feeling I'll be catching up on such.  I'll probably be carrying that challenge over to the next period, even if it's late.  Why?  Well, there's stuff I want to have go from "started a year ago" to "it's finished, here's pics!" and they'll be painted anyways, so... It's a goal to keep up there in my eyes ^_^;;;

- Fingerpainting RPChallenge...  Didn't happen, and I'm not really planning on doing such.

- Wyrmgear didn't get touched, but there were a lot of other various factors playing into things with rl/personal life.  Hoping to get more work done on him soon, as it would be awesome to move onwards to basing and of course painting him!
- Sir Forscale didn't get the ideas I had, but wound up being used for a personal speed painting challenge thingy.  Still debating my thoughts on how he came out, but....  Him and another mini did get finished in 2hr 10min so I'm not going to complain there, as my complaint isn't with how he turned out, it's how I seem to almost instantly gravitate towards really REALLY dark colours, which can backfire somewhat.

I just flocked the base of one more 1/72 scale bandit for that project.  I’ll put the final varnish coat on it tonight, but it’s a ballroom lesson night, so that will be late.  Even if I finish something at lunch, it won’t get to basing and varnish this month...

So, no standard bearerer or Burrows and Badgers, but two units and about 8 1/72 figures, so not too terrible.  Group picture to follow, but probably not until Saturday.

Right next goals.

  • Work on La Charra Bust
  • Finish Undead Clan War Necromancer
  • Finish Oathsworn Female Monk
  • Finish Reaper Black Reef Pirate

Aside from working a bit more on La Charra I didn't accomplish anytthing.

I need to get back into the mood.

Too much stuff in my head prevents me from painting.
