  1. New Acquisitions! Butterbean and Linn-Miranda From the Denver Cat Company, formerly a cat rescue/adoption center/coffee-shop/bookstore. currently not serving coffee, just play time with cats. (& adoptions) they are both affectionate and playful and really well socialized. I only meant to get one, but felt he would be so lonely after constant playtime with dozens of kittens and a steady stream of people. the wife and spawn needed less persuasion than I did. we have been cat-less since march.

  3. I have wanted to get into painting for a long time and have watched days worth of videos on it. i think it shows in how my first minis came out. the first was a reaper kobold and he looks a bit sloppy. (on the card for the hobby holder i got because i could not find anything else to put him on for the pic lol) next was a blue kobold and a baby dragon, I was still working on how washes work with the blue kobold but the dragon came out better. now the one i did today I am pretty proud of him, for being my forth mini i think he looks really good. he is colored like a ring neck snake.

  4. Condolences @Pezler the Polychromatic. My wife has been away for a few days visiting relatives and friends (there is an Atlantic bubble, so folks who live in the 4 Atlantic provinces can travel between without 14 day quarantines now). I took the opportunity to dig out all the boxes I'd stuffed under the desks in the paint room and stacked them in the bedroom so I could go through them in the AC (it's been stupid muggy here). So the good news: I've found pretty much everything I've been looking for since we moved. The bad news: the bed is covered with all the everything, which all needs to find homes before she gets back in a few hours......

  8. Without doubt, a Tiger. If we are allowed something a bit more fantastical, then a winged tiger. A real life version of this giant lantern that I saw a couple of years ago.

  10. It certainly is, and my family members are very grateful for it. Some are scattered throughout the province, but the hospital is more or less centrally located to all of us. Went to the funeral home today with my brothers to decide the arrangements and decide on several things. Storm blew in and knocked out the power while we were there, and wind and hail knocked down branches. Power was out for over an hour before we left town, and it even knocked out power in my city that's 25 minutes away (45 minutes because the entire stretch of highway is being worked on to add passing lanes).

  12. No, but I can listen to music quietly if I wish. And since data entry is mind-numbingly tedious, I generally do wish. Busy day today; we're starting to see the (expected, to be honest) uptick in the number of swab tests coming back positive from the week after July 4th celebrations , so lots of phone calls to do. We always call the positives ASAP to make sure they are informed right away, while the negatives (the vast majority, thank goodness) receive a mass text we send out once a day. And in between is the aforementioned data entry, as well as fielding phone calls from people wanting to know their test results sooner. It's tedious, yeah, but it's important, and I'm happy to be doing something useful. Huzzah! --OneBoot :D

  14. I had intended on giving some updates on progress as I worked on this and the other model I'll be posting here, but apparently I was too focused on getting it finished The spikes didn't work out quite like I wanted them to, but I'm pretty happy with it overall. I actually had thought I was messing up the eyes when I was working on them, but they turned out better than I thought they would. Anyhow, suggestions or critiques welcome!

  15. Low fantasy: probably just a loyal mutt would be acceptable. High Fantasy: A raptor or falcon with some sort of telepathic link (I'm thinking a Pratchett-esque type of "borrowing"). Thoramel level of fantasy: Telepathic, cyber T-rex with lasers and a saddle, it gets weird at our gaming table.

  17. Two boxes arrived with more vintage molds yesterday. (Why buy toys when you could buy a toy factory instead?) One was a farily conventional WWI soldiers mold: The other, to add to the once and future retro SF project, is one of two Flash Gordon molds that were made: Back around 1996, our club (including @Chris Palmer) made a bulk order with the Eccles Brothers, collectors of molds and purveyors of castings, for a Buck Rogers game. We also threw in the Flash Gordon figures, because, why not? However, neither of those molds ever fell into our hands. The Flash Gordon mold also came with an interesting bit of ephemera, a Home Foundry catalog: Molds available for separate order run to four pages: Watching sales, it’s clear that some of these are very scarce. Others were passed down from one company to another until Castings, Inc. went out of business on the passing of its owner last fall. I’m idly considering what sort of game would involve every vintage mold I have...

  18. It varies, for work I'm about a 10 and for home life it's about a 5. The only exception is if we're planning something that involves a booking at a certain time(i.e. ferry, cinema, exhibition etc). Then I'll go into full plan for all eventualities mode. This came in very handy last year when the road that we were traveling on last year had a massive accident an we had to take a 60 mile detour to get to where we needed to be on time. As promised, here are some photos showing why I love staying where I do. Make no mistake, Its certainly not in the middle of nowhere and I can hear distant traffic anywhere in the site, but its proof that nature can flourish if we just give it a chance. All of these photos were taken in the last couple of weeks.

  19. So, another one I had intended on doing more of a work in progress posting as I went along and just completed it before I even realized I hadn't taken more photos. I had some issues deciding on what color I would do for the head and legs once I had the blue and purple decided on, but am glad I went with the brass/copper/patina look that i ended up with, as that seems to be a good contrast to the blue and purple and green crystals. I'll be sealing this quite a bit as it is a game piece for a card game, and the small crystals that stick out on the bottom of the base are detachable. Definitely glad I got in on this kickstarter as it was a lot of fun.

  21. Godzilla! I know finding an inn that accepts pets will be harder Tapeworm! We'll always be together. Pet rock, specifically asbestos! So it's both furry *and* dangerous. [*Cough*] I never grew up with pets, so I'm unfamiliar with long term pros/cons of living with common pets like dogs or cats. But if I want a combination of pet traits I like: intelligence, pettable softness and long life expectancy, I'll go with something from the parrot, cockatoo, or macaw family. Crows and ravens would count, but they often have a negative stigma attached to them among the ignorant masses.

  25. My mother just told me she's now technically homeless. Meaning she finally sold the family home I grew up in! She's been trying to get rid of it for months. Two stories, 6 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, many appliances included (stove, fridge, washer/dryer). Though I have decades of memories there, it was too big a house for a 75 year old widow to take care of. She sold it far below evaluation cost, but she's just glad to not have to take care of it for another winter.

  29. It's been a while since I posted here, but I wanted to share one of my current projects. I started on this 70mm orc from Yedharo back in October. I took a break from it for a while and just recently got back to work on her. When I first saw the sculpt, for some reason I immediately pictured a blue orc. I know a little untraditional, but I like to switch it up from the standard green. One of the things I wanted to work with on this piece was the use of ambient color/light. I pictured her standing over some beast she'd killed and wanted to show the light reflecting off of that and onto the orc. Since she's blue, I decided on red for the beast. It's not the easiest thing to see in the photos (the effect is more obvious in person) but you can see it most clearly from behind. When I start on the armor I'll be doing the same thing and it should be even more pronounced there since metallic objects can pick up a lot of light/color from the other objects in the scene. I'll be painting her with TMM, so there's going to be some experimentation as I work matte colors into my metallics for the reflected light. My latest progress has been to build the base. I'm not much of a sculptor, but I've been getting some practice in over the past year and feel a bit more comfortable tackling something like this. Overall I'm pretty happy with how the base sculpt turned out. Now I'm curious to see what I'll think of it when I finally start to paint it! Having the base is also nice as, when I start on the metallics, I'll have a more precise reference to work from for the reflections (instead of just the vague idea I had when I worked on the skin).

  31. Generally, 6ish. I like to have a plan. I don't need one, but it makes me more comfortable. However, even in my most detailed plans I tend to build in time and opportunities to for deviation, or unstructured time.

  33. Probably a golden tiger. I love cats in general anyway. There's few fantastical creatures that I like more than my own domesticated cats, so I'll go with a real animal that I couldn't own in real life that's closest to my real life preferences. I guess if I wanted to get more fantastical, I'd go with something like Keroberos from Card Captor Sakura...

  34. I think we have one of those targeting our feeders and you're more than welcome to him! His favourite trick is to detatch the bottom feeder port on the ones containing sunflower hearts and nyger seeds, causing the entire feeders to empty in a nice little pile below. He's also chewed through a washing line, stolen several feeders and taunts the (indoor)cats as much as possible. I admire his ingenuity, but I'm considering getting a baffle for the feeder pole as its costing a fair bit to replace all the food he steals.

  37. I need a piece of metal pipe or something to fix a wheelbarrow(spacers on the wheel) so I did a bit of dumpster diving during a break today... guess what I found in the metal recyclable container? To anyone guessing 'a couple of pieces of metal of the exact dimensions required', please take off your rose-tinted glasses... No, what I found, in it's plastic case even, was this beauty: (Stock photo, but besides the addition of a sticer from the previous owner, this one is mint) That's a Tamaya Planix 7 'planimeter'. A device that you move around on a map or whatever, and it'll tell you how large an area you marked. Irregular shapes and all. And it's the 7 model, with options for different units and scales. Goody! The only issue seems to be that the battery is completely dead. And it's a 3cell (2/3AAA size) Ni-cad pack... Sure, it would work with a Ni-mh pack but the charging system is slightly different, so I think I'll do the safe thing and track down something with the right chemistry. This model Planimeter seems to go for around $100 on evilBay... (Nope, not going to sell it. I collect weird stuff like this)
