This is the Chasme from the AD&D Planescape line from Ral Partha (SKU 11-649). Painted with the new mermaid scale paint from the pre-order Brinewind set. Painted over Coal Black it makes great shiny insect carapace, and over white, awesome looking insect wings. I also had fun making a lava river for this creepy demon critter.

I like the carapace - and wonderful work on the 'human' flesh color, very creepy. Love this old school mini!

This was acquired yesterday shortly before noon. The picture was taken after RTB* at around 2pm. *return to base (Also, it was every bit as hot as the overexposed background hints at.)

I'm looking at it trying to figure how they got it all in these small boxes. 'Cause when I come home from Reapercon it's, like, two tote bags and a suitcase full of stuff....

She's really GOOD at it! Even before she could really talk. "Ahh! Ahh!" And point at the screen. She saved my character's life more than once.

Those words represent all Dolph Lundgren movies. And I have mad respect for Dolph (he will always be the live-action embodiment of He-Man to me). That is a classic movie in my house. Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa is fantastic in it, one of his most iconic villain roles.

I have no idea how I'd never seen this. Kinda great, kinda terrible, pretty fun.

Pretty great. Simple and solid. Really played to old-school Mel. Daughter was kind of annoying tho.

Not bad for a movie totally devoid of any trace of subtlety or nuance whatsoever. 120 minutes of so-so SNL shtick totally worth sitting through for 10 minutes of prolly the weirdest Arnold energy ever.

Got quite a few minis finished in the past week or so. First up are a few more from the recent Mantic Kickstarter. I threw all the pieces in a gallon bag and just grab a few out at random when I want to paint something quickly. Here's an elf king that was a free mini from a Reaper order. Can't for the life of me remember the name though. Mouslings Archer that I had to photograph on my wife's desk because she grabbed it before I could take a picture. Some sort of fairy from a familiar pack. Kind of evil looking if you ask me. She is so tiny. This was in a recent BoGW. I'm not sure what it's from, but it will be joining my goblin horde going forward. Wererat from the last bones kickstarter. I wasn't terribly excited about this until I put paint on it. But turns out I like it quite a bit. Also, I wanted to practice black fur before trying it on the Black Goat of the Woods. Sabertooth Pug. This is just an awesome sculpture. And finally this fisherman from bones 4.

Tried watching Ad Astra today, but only made it halfway. Brad Pitts constant, droning narration about how everything sucks just ruins it all, even the weird bits like the Moon Pirates and the Killer Space Monkeys. Got a wacky 80's B-movie called The Hidden to watch tonight, hopefully it's a bit better.

Such an iconic role. I watched the move last week, and I still quote it, it's got so many good parts. Plus Victor Wong as Egg Shen. It's also one of those movies that, for the '80s and that Kurt Russell the main protagonist, throughout the movie he's fairly inept in all the combat. He has his moments, but he's pretty much outclassed by either the bad guys, or himself. I think it makes the movie priceless. My brother bought the boardgame and needs the minis painted, so I am hoping he decides to send it my way...

Recent speed paints. Already posted this one in the Show Off thread a few days back. Man, I love these old Shadowrun trolls. My group has been playing some form of SR since the mid nineties and this is going to go over great the next time someone wants to play a troll. This is also a Ral Partha Shadowrun figure. It's the female combat mage, I've got the male mage rattling around here somewhere. Kind of phoned this one in, didn't realize how much until I took a picture and could see all the sloppiness. This is from Rebel Games. Who doesn't love a tiny little kobold riding a weasel? He seems so happy. Of course, I would be too if I had a riding weasel. I know Reaper has this guy listed as a Cooper. But as far as I'm concerned this is just a medieval homebrewer showing up to the party with a cask of ale. Some more Skull and Crown skeletons. Spearmen: The command team: Funny thing about that last set. I got these in a Kickstarter and when they arrived the guy with the halberd was broken at the knees. I tried repeatedly to fix him but it was beyond my abilities. So I reached out and asked if I could just purchase him alone (he's sold as part of a pack of three). I figured since it had been many months since they delivered, and me not telling them about the problem right away, it was past the point of getting a replacement. Instead of selling me one they sent me the whole squad along with a sticker and some banners free of charge. Good service, I'm looking forward to their next Kickstarter.

We moved. I have set up my hobby room. Purchased a 3D printer. Seeing how many unpainted minis I have I just made the decision to really stop buying more. Instead I backed a few kickstartes that will provide STL's so I can print more minis with those. WUT? I do not see a flaw in this plan..

This Karzoug, Runelord of Greed and the Big Bad Evil Guy of the Pathfinder Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path. I am currently a player in that campaign and one day we will meet in one of these dungeons. This is the first time I tried my hand at an OSL effect. To make things simple I imagined him to float in a dark room with illumination only coming from his burning glaive, which kind of allowed me to limit myself to shades of two colors.

This guy was so fun to paint. I have him temporarily on the base (using rods instead of glue to hold him in place) because I thought of a future diorama idea for him, but I want to be able to use him in games for the time being

Hello friends, today I'm gonna show you the most recent mini I've painted, The Troll from Blood Rage. As you can see my choice was on green skin, but I've tryed a different scheme, a very desaturated green and no yellow in the hilights. Contrasting with this color was no easy, no choice but using oranges. Tried Vallejo liquid gold for the first time (it's alcohol based) and I'm pretty happy with the result. Let me know what you think about it :)

Decided to paint this sucker yesterday as my first of the kit. I really like how it came out... And this is a photo to show how much a difference two years can make. I had a fifteen year gap from 2003 until April of 2018, and the figure on the left was one of the first I painted when I started back again.

This is the bat demon. I didn't want to do a traditional red for this guy but I had a new Averland Sunset paint from GW so I thought I'd find a use for it since it didn't work on the project I bought it for. I did go with red for his hair and fur. I kind of rushed at the end because I tried to do some highlighting on his wings and it went very poorly . So since I had taken so long to decide on his base colour and made a mistake I was in danger of stalling if I tried it again and made another mistake. I guess smooth gradients are still outside of my abilities. I don't like this guy nearly as much as my displacer beast but he's finished so he is going into the display case with the rest of them! Oh and I notice now that he probably needs a coat of matte because the inks in his hair left a bit of a shine.

I see the light at the end of the tunnel! Grinding through the Bones 4 core set, we have reached the last two dozen....and a full dozen of those are kobolds! Soon there will be less than 10 left! Today I did the Ape Attack! subset I chose to go different paths with each of them. These are so big, I think they are more useful as individuals than as a team. After all, there is only so much you can to with three giant apes, one of which that for some reason seems to have joined the Roman legions. And I was not kidding when I said they were giant apes: They are twice the height of a man, and what looks like ten times the mass. #83: The Great White Ape Drybrushed from black with a series of offwhites, ochre, beige and greys, and a couple of skin tones on the nekkid flesh. This one does double duty as an abominable snowman. 40mm base. #84: The Barlgura A barlgura is a D&D chaotic evil demonic creature of the Abyssal plane. Described as semi-intelligent and brutally violent, looking like an eight foot tall blue-skinned Orangutan with wickedly sharp claws. The model is of a much larger Gorilla...Well... close enough. Let's just call him King Louie and leave it at that. "Oobee-doo! I wanna beat up you-oo-oo!" 50mm base #85: Ingkay Ongkay "My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next." (Gladiator, 2000) So, Reaper...Pray tell. What is it I am not familiar with here? In what context might I need a giant romanesque-armoured gladius-wielding ape exactly? 50mm base. #83, #84, #85 the Ape Attack! subset Bones 4 Core set, 2019 Reaper Miniatures unknown sculptor Made in Bonesium PVC 40mm and 50mm bases should be available from reapermini.com some time in the future in Bones. Bones 4 core set: 143/163 just 20 to go!

Hey Hey People, shadefoundry here to report the outcomes from me experimenting with spray primers. Its been pretty well documented how Bones minis work well with Vallejo Brush-On primer, so I've been using that pretty much exclusively for them, but I only have a bottle of it in white, and that stuff is not opaque whatsoever. Since I'm slowly getting through painting my first dragon (Blightfang) I decided I'd paint up a few smaller bones minis so that I could see how they react to different things, so that I'm not experimenting on my nice dragon. Before I get into my findings, a quick disclaimer, I did these tests with two of the light greyish colored bones, I'm not sure if things are different for the white ones, but I'll be testing with them in the near future since I have a few I'd like to get painted up for a campaign. So, while painting my Dragoth's throne, I decided I was going to use this opportunity to play with contrast paints. Out of laziness I decided to see what would happen if I sprayed over the brush-on primer with Vallejo White Spray primer, since I didn't feel like painting on a white base coat. Now for those of you who've used that stuff before, you may have noticed that it's already a bit stickier than citadel spray primers by default, and on a Bones mini with brush-on primer it was no different. I would say that it got a bit stickier than normal, but paint adhered very well to it, and has yet to go tacky over the 2 weeks or so it's been since I finished painting it. Every day I've applied pressure with fingers to different areas to see if tackiness has come through, and so far I have yet to feel any. My next test was with spray varnishes. This is something I've seen people talk a bit about but since I tend to use a couple of different ones in layers, I figured I'd report regardless. So I painted up an Anirion to test with, and sprayed him down with Testors Glosscote, which nobody seems to talk about. Nothing went sticky and the glossy finish didn't crack or tarnish when I bent parts of the mini. After that dried I gave it a coat of Testors Dullcote, as is my tradition with varnishing. Once again nothing's gone sticky and bending parts don't have any negative effects that I can see. This was a few days ago now, and I've been running my fingers on it and applying pressure at different parts pretty much daily to make sure nothing's gone wrong. I'll be doing more tests this weekend once I've had a chance to pick up more Dullcote, as I've run out, but so far everything seems to be going alright. Edit1: I had some time to test out spray priming with another mini. This time Jana, Female Dragon Slayer. Since the initial result of spray priming was a tiny bit stickier than I'd like, this time I opted to brush-on prime, followed by a very quick base coat of Scale75 Scale Color White, finished off with a spray coat of Vallejo White Spray Primer. The result was absolutely zero tack, and a very solid white coating for more Contrast Paint testing. So far this method requires the most work, but it's got pretty good results for smaller scale minis. I'll be looking into refining this process as I paint more bones minis. Edit2: It's been like a month since I sprayed that second mini, and Jana has gone very, very tacky. I'm not sure what the difference is considering I sprayed her and Dragoth's throne with the same can of primer, and the throne is doing well. Speaking of the throne, I sprayed it down with a coat of Testor's Glosscote followed by Dullcote as I do with all my minis. Looks like Bones minis take Testors varnish no problem. TL;DR, Vallejo White Spray Primer works pretty well if you spray a mini that's already been primed with their brush on variant, and Testors Gloss/Dullcotes have no negative effects on painted Bones from what I can tell.

Got a decent amount of work done on Monster today. Still need to play around with the shield and there's clean up/polish work to do throughout but it's getting pretty close!
  43. 1 point
Little more work on Monster today. Defining the hair, adding the little holly berries and leaves, and the rough version of the horns. Blocking some more parts of the costuming throughout. I don't get to devote entire days at a time on this project so you'll see this one come together a little slower than some of my other threads. This is a couple hours of work.
  44. 1 point
Hmmm, now there's an idea? I know there are 3D print shops, but I think those are pretty expensive and it might not be worth it. I do own a few STL files though I got some busts and the STL files with them, I could ask around how much that would cost just to compare prices. Among the three of us we already have a sound business plan, I can make up background stories for any army! So all we need is a Sculptor, a Caster and oh yeah. a "little" money...and some customers. Wait..this sounds like WORK!!!! ABORT MISSION!!!!!!

And another friend who is a sculptor, always looking for a new sculpting challenge, who is adept with Z-Brush. If I had a sculptor, I could have a miniatures company. If I had a caster.
