  1. I brought and painted a number of Egyptian Skeletons for Rangers of Shadow Deep. I used the Bones Temple Guardians, converting a few of them slightly, some GW Tomb Kings from ebay, and some of the skeleton archers from Runewars. I tried to blend in the styles of the minis I'd brought and painted and the ebays. These were neatly painted but brighter than everything I'd done. So I used washes and drybrushing to knock them back. I'm not sure that the Runewars chap fits in entirely but he's what I had and wanted to use up things on the grey pile of shame.

  2. I got a skeleton as part of a job lot of Tomb Kings soldiers. It was neatly painted but missing an arm. I used the chain and cutlass from the Reaper Razig weapons sprue, and made a hat out of green stuff. The missing left arm is from the Frostgrave cultists sprue. I'm no sculptor but the hat was really easy. I just followed a YouTube video. The base was again just modelling paste for sand, then mod podge for the water.

  3. I apologize for not being on the forums (or doing art) so much lately! Between "2020," a new house, and my arm problems, I lost a lot of drive. Kinda hard to keep up the discipline of practicing and/or enjoying art when you physically can't do it.... We finally saved up enough to get my right arm looked at in late September. I've only mentioned it a few times, but I've had problems in both hands for several years. I already couldn't do too much each day, but back in March my right elbow began to be in severe daily pain too. I couldn't do anything at all for seven months. My doctor listened (!), called for a test that we were able to do right away, and confirmed that I had pinched nerves in both arms. He said it likely happened when I was a kid and that's why I've had all those other misdiagnosed issues for so many years! Within 10 days, he performed the surgery on both elbows. I couldn't do anything for another month except pout on the couch LOL but I am finally cleared for all activities again! My hand strength is half of what it should be and it will take some time, but I have a list of exercises to fix that. He also set me up with another doctor who will look at my back problems in a couple weeks. Maybe I'll be able to start running around again too! I miss nature! I promised the doctor I would take it slow. But! I'm so excited to be back here with everyone for art and friend time! So how are you all holding up?? I've missed well over 400 pages in the Randomness thread!

  6. Our car is in the shop, so we took the bus this morning. I forget that Grump lives in a different universe than I do. He lives in a universe where he can sing out loud on the bus, and people will APPLAUD. And the bus driver will GIVE HIM THE OPPORTUNITY! I live in a universe where if I tried that, people would look at me like I was crazy. And Grump doesn't even think it is weird, it's just the way his universe works.

  7. Hello, fellow painters! Certainly my photography needs a little work, but that's neither here nor there - this is Karlov Diedrich (03484), here painted up to represent "The Mad Mage" from D&D's "Curse of Strahd" module. He's one of the possible NPCs that the party might end up befriending, or... well, no spoilers! What has proven worth repeating, is to paint the face before doing anything else. Getting paint on something that was well-painted is a huge fear. It's also why the chest area of the figure might be my least favourite. I kept it sort-of dark and then didn't know how to return to it. Hopefully the attention is drawn elsewhere! This fella also fell off his paint handle at one point and the top part of the cowl's paint chipped off, though luckily I was able to repaint that. Nothing's without its hurdles!

  8. My universe, my rules. Meanwhile, in Megan's Pathfinder universe... The freaking entire freaking Swamp is a freaking lich! We were almost killed by an undead tree monster, that fell apart as soon as we 'killed' it. And it was laughing as it collapsed. The lich is building bodies for itself out of the muck and wrack of the swamp. The reason my hero felt like something was watching us the whole time was because the whole danged swamp was watching us! I think that the sunken village is the key - but we still need to find it, then find where he is buried or whatever. And, sure enough, that witch we found does have a big skeleton undead thing - with scythes for arms - she rides on top of it as it stomps along with us. I think it is a giant Hook Horror, but I could be wrong. The Auld Grump

  9. These are from wargames Atlantic. No conversions or kitbashing. I just brought a single sprue from ebay to try them out. The figures were really easy to paint. There is a convention/understanding I think that if you were not a noble in dark ages to medieval Ireland the only dye colour you could use was yellow. I may try a different colour for the yellow on subsequent minis as not sure it is quite right. I'm pleased with the dogs, which took barely any time to paint. Scale 75 brown gray, then an umber wash, then two grey drybrushes. And done. If I buy two or three more sprues I should have enough for a Saga war band or to use in skirmish games. I'd just need to get some cavalry and buy or make some elites.

  10. Presenting my Beastman Champion and true child of Atmos (In my own fantasy setting I base some of my Games Workshop stuff in, Beastman are a race of former humans who were changed by worshipping an ancient, goat-headed god called Atmos. Occasionally, an actual goat-headed Beastman will be born amongst them and will be considered Atmos's offspring, they then get all the best food and stuff and grow up to be one of the leaders or shamans of the various tribes.) Who is from the Warhammer: Underworlds range by Games Workshop. I'm super pleased with how this guy turned out, but I really need to buckle down and actually finish one of these Underworlds sets. As always, any comments or criticisms are warmly received.

  11. My miniatures list has more varieties of pulp than a paper-mill town grocery's orange juice aisle. Mad scientists, apes, cultists, cosmic horrors, spacemen, sky pirates, zeppelineers, two-fisted heroes, etc. But not a lot of what was for several decades, the most common pulp villain. Let's paint something for our heroes to fight! Artizan's Thrilling Tales line comes through once again. Here are two horrible and officious jerks, on a pre-dawn hunt for Resistance agents. "Oberst von Stroop" is the one with the gun; "Major Kreipe" the one with the satchel and the dueling scar. We've seen a couple of the Resistance before, but I believe this is the first time I've posted a picture of "Georges." I had fun with the argyle sweater-vest. Georges' briefcase contains a surprise! Some more baddies: "Colonel Braun," a perfectly pompous sculpt, and the "Kaiserin" from Brigade Games. (Also Erwin Rommel, previously posted elsewhere). (Couple more pictures of Zenith's commandoes, from 50075, if you click below.) And on another, stranger front... This is "Private Trummer," an old and not particularly motivated soldier sent on special detail with a special unit. He sees nothing, he hears no-othing, and he knows NO-O-O-OTHING! It doesn't do to see, hear, or know too much when you're out with the armored Sturm Battalion Zorn. (Pictured: Flamethrower and Rifleman III. I added an extra gas tank from Bombshell to the Flamethrower unit.) Battalion Zorn is led by "Captain Rohr," a merciless and ambitious creep. Funnily enough, for a man who sees and hears nothing, Private Trummer has a knack for not being around in a crisis... Finally, a group shot, as such groups should be.

  14. Hello All. I have a mixed relationship with Fleabay. There have been some great sales and some things I never expected but also some real flubs. People are very understanding with shipping as long as your cost is what they expect, overcharging or, heaven forbid, asking for more after the fact is met with utter horror. right or wrong it is what it is. I just have the devils own time getting up the energy to do all the pictures, writeup monitoring and shipping especially on a lot of items where it seems the only benefit i get is not sending whatever it is to the midden heap. OTOH it is time to purge my board games again, especially with the covid crisis, there are some games i havent even opened in a decade. Much as i loved them in the day, i think its time a lot of them move on. I just need to find the best way to do this. Honestly, i could use the shelf space back too. Bother, but having too many goodies is a good thing right?

  16. I converted this figure from Crooked Dice. The original was from the Granville graphic novel, and what I find quite funny is that I thought I was doing really well just swapping the head, only to realise that, cartoon style, the mini only has 4 digits on each gloved hand. Oh well. I tried to take some time with the highlights but didn't quite get where I wanted to with the face. The base material is from Lukes APS/Geek Gaming.

Obvious why I did it. I've been in some scary situations in my life but nothing was as bad as that. Longest few minutes of my life while we were working on her before the trauma team arrived and took over. It was the only time I've had a massive shock reaction after it was done. At least I didn't freeze up until the professionals were in control.

  21. i'm a bit weird in that certain minis will just strike a chord with me and i feel strongly that i'm going to paint it a specific color. This usually happens during the kickstarter itself when i first see the mini. These minis are usually the big ones like dragons, little guys i just wing as i get to painting them example of one i did for Blacksting, and then the finished miniature. Top one is photoshop to plan out the color, bottom is the real one once i had it in hand to paint

  22. Time to paint a new Dragon. and whats a dragon without a WIP? This will be My second largest painted Dragon, behind only DDS2. It will slip to 3rd when I get around to painting the KDM Dragon King, that boy is a Chonk. My goal is two months - ie end of the year. otherwise I will have only finished one dragon this year, when normally I paint 3. but white is so boring. lets see what references I can find to spice it up. Ooooh Mamma ! so to translate this into the figure ... mint/pastel green tint on scales, pink in the creases. the lizard above seems to have green around some scales and pink around others. im not really sure how to make that work. time for some rough drafts. Rule of thirds - all white surfaces should be 1/3 or less other colors, this way it should still read as white scales. It could easily overwhelm the dragon, and lose the white designation . (ie DO NOT replicate the too green small lizard on the top.) I don't need back legs on my sketch, patterns will be identical to the front legs. Should I splatter with yellow? - it is either random color shift on scales or urine stains. Paint Colors: Entrail Pink mixed with white for the creases (red liner deepest shadow) Green sky (vallejo) for the mint green, also 50/50 white. (green liner for darkest shadows) Linen white as a base - Pure white for highlights. Snow shadow (blue/white) for shadows on the scales. The wings should be darker on above than below, and more pink , while the upper surface will be more green. Basing - Simple Snow Base. The Dragon needs to be sturdy as it will join the collection that my Mini-Spawn plays with. It comes with a transparent pole, and attachment points to the base. No need to reinvent the wheel. I think I need to sleep on this before moving past the clean-up stage. Comments , Criticism or Suggestions?

  27. Acquired today or yesterday: RPG stuff for the weekend games. Never fails get em early & I don't really need em, oh well good to have em now. 4 inch round mirror. Scenery piece for my Saturday game. I'm running Baldman Games Moonshae AL games for that. This will be a moonwell for a combat map. Reaper: Flight bases with long peg (need these for my printed giant owls) Bones Grave Wailer (will be a gibbering mouther when it comes up) Vallejo Game Wash: Black (I wanted to try this one, thou I really wanna try their Wash line) Prepainted minis for Monday's AL FLGS game: Piercer x 2 (kinda of a crappy prepainted mini but it works for what its suppose to be) Gazer x 4 Icewind Dale Human Hunter (female) (this will be the expert sidekick NPC in Frozen North AL game) Tiefling Battlemaster (male) (this is the warrior sidekick from Frozen North) Snowy Owlbear (my first clear base prepainted mini. I'm not sure how I feel about seeing one of these in person. Since I have so many black based minis, it'll look out of place. The base is starting to come out of the mini, so I may end up swapping it out for black round base anyways.) Pathfinder Deep Cuts (dwarf summoner, female) (this is the healer/mage sidekick from Frozen North)

  28. Question November 6th. What's the scariest thing you've ever done and why did you do it? hmm I may have posted this before, but it was probably swimming in hawaii after I jumped off a cliff. The jump was easy, the 1/4 mile? swim back to the beach was terrifying. I had no experience swimming in the ocean and was way out of my depth. I remember running completely out of endurance and letting the waves smash me into the sand. I find out later that people get killed jumping off that cliff every year. Why did I do it? To impress a girl. (a local, she jumped first and was gone by the time I got back to the beach.)

  29. Probably going aloft (climbing up the mast) of a ship, and then inching my way out to the end of the yard arm in order to secure a broken communications antenna that was broken off and swinging dangerously close to a very expensive radar dish. At sea. During a hurricane. Why? I was in charge of the communication work center, so it was my responsibility, and I wasn't going to make someone else go and do something that I wouldn't do myself.

  30. I remember many years ago when I did my first sales on ebay. Somehow I found at our local K-mart (RIP) in the toy section 4 Jeff Gordon #24 Dupont sheetmetal diecasts. These were a 1:64 scale diecast car with a piece of sheetmetal (about a square inch wide) with the car. They are pretty rare, so finding 4 in one spot. I was like "Hot damn!!" Funny thing, I wasn't a Gordo fan when I was into Nascar, I still bought them knowing the full value of them. I listed them on ebay, for 50.00 each & I had bidders & lurkers till the end of all of them. They went for around 150 to 75. I was quite happy since they cost like 7 bucks or so. Example of what the thing looked like:

  31. The new furnace is halfway installed. Or at least I hope it's a furnace, because currently the parts have an uncanny resemblance to a deep fryer. Or perhaps that is the newfangled way of home heating, instead of the thermostat, the temperature is maintained by how many chicken bits and fry baskets are going at any given time...if this is the case, then I suspect that by the end of Winter, I'll be in shape for a new and exciting career on the sumo circuit...

  32. Well I said I would try the WIP for this project so we will see how it goes... Earlier this year I completed the print of the Beta scout created by second dynasty. The print was pretty ambitious and wound up using over 2kg of filament This was the completed print Then came a really long wait for badgers 3d leveling solution and prime. It worked pretty well though I think most of the work was the leveling solution rather than the prime I decided to use the paint scheme from the starmaster from the TTA books So I started with a scarlet paint from badgers airbrush paint line But it wasn't red enough so I gave it a second coat with a ghost tint 'fresh blood And that got me where I want to be. Once its dry i can strip off the tape hiding the white lines and see how the edges did. I still have a dark blue line in the back so more air brushing tomorrow then I can start painting the interior...

  34. I was searching through my mini collection yesterday when I stumbled on my Bones 1 collection. Like others, my transparent Fire Elemental is also "tacky". It looked and felt as if a residual oily/greasy film was on it. The other transparent orange minis don't feel as bad, or at all. And none of white Bones are affected.

  41. Keep in mind that most people don't paint them all. I take everything out and look at it, and do a quick inspection for missing pieces. then everything gets rebagged and stuck in a tote bin 1'x2'x1' approx. When I am done painting something it either fights for space in my small display cabinet. Or it joins the dragons on the mantle (where My mini spawn can play with it) or it goes in a red plastic craft box (One in picture, 5? others in the basement. both cases are orderd from amazon, I order new ones (using order history) as I have filled up old ones. I rarely pick colors or decide what order I am going to do more od a random looking around after I finish the last thing. - But I do like to finish the core set I tend to do small groups (3-6) with a similar theme, based on what I find interesting in the moment, or for a technique I want to practice. I dont wash and clean them till im ready to paint, and then do prep work on the model while I consider colors. (dragons are an exception they get more planning) see picture 2 I frequently look for inspirational pictures, especially for animals

  43. "Have we anything resembling a plan?" "Mm-hmm. Ride til we find them, then kill paint them all." Personally, I just kind of play it by ear (or eye, as it were). Sometimes I'll know that I want to use a particular color to start with. Other times I just look at what I'm about to start and wait til something "pops". When I come across a missed satchel (pouch, additional garment layer, or realize that the mini is wearing gloves, etc.) I tend to just to use whatever I'd already been using for similar items and darken or lighten it a step.

  45. oh well, rough day but at least I have minis progress this year: 12 dragons completed! 72 minis completed! 14 pieces of terrain printed and painted 22 completed 3d sculptures (the piece count is over 100 with over 5kg of PLA and ABS consumed!) Still hoping to finish painting my scout ship (that is a huge project!) Finally settled on the color scheme of the Skymaster 28 for the scout. its simple and elegant (see picture) Since I primed white it should be a brilliant scarlet when done. such a pretty ship (both the skymaster and the Beta Scout by 2nd Dynasty) I am really looking forward to completing that! I did get to try the Badger 3d priming solution. I really don't know if the primer does that much for the project but the leveling solution is gold for seriously reducing the ridge marks of filament printing (note: contrary to popular comments, sanding is NOT the answer to filament 20 minutes with an orbital sander and 4 grit levels got me less than 10 square inches of smooth surface!) Anyway the surface isn't perfect but it looks a lot better than it did, and its a white base to start from so the red should be really bright! I will hopefully mask the white and blue stripe tonight (theres a second stripe around the engine compartment you cant see well on the picture) and paint the spray the red this evening. I am probably going to have to hand paint the landing gear because there is no real way to get an airbrush into some of the crannies. Maybe I will do a WIP... not likely but I might.

  46. I hurt, darn it all! All my sore spots ache just enough to make me frustrated and miserable but not enough to actually be able to do something about them. Its frustrating and aggravating beyond measure. I am also pretty sure every one is pretty tired of hearing about it, cause I am tired of constantly sitting on the edge. I also had a CT yesterday but wont get the results until Tuesday which always sends me into a mental tailspin even though there is absolutely nothing I can do about the news one way or the other. On life goes, Sorry needed a moment there. Thanks for listening.
