  1. Oh, look a cavern full of valuable crystals. Hm, a tight fit. I am going to take off all my armour so I can crawl in there... From the Bones 4 Darkreach expansion 44049 Stone Lurker Sculpted by Jason Wiebe Bones Black 60mm base I think tentacles are all the more horrid when they are fleshy. This would be a Roper for D&D, in case that was not obvious. A stalagmite-lookalike ambush predator that waits for the unwary to pass by, coiled tentacles at the ready to spring out and drag the victium into its hungry maw. Dungeon delvers beware.

  2. That really is his best "smiling for the camera" face; he doesn't like his smile for some reason (even though his regular smile is really very nice), so I have to coach him to smile for pictures. He was also super tired after working overtime all week. We've already met a couple of the neighbors, one of whom has two very friendly doggos who made sure we knew we were adjacent to their territory. Everybody has been very friendly and welcoming, and it seems like a lovely neighborhood! Huzzah! --OneBoot :D

  3. It's official: WE HAZ A HOUSE! This is such an important occasion, I figured it warrants a picture with our ACTUAL FACES! (though this doesn't preclude my being a purple cat on the internet; prosthetics are quite good these days) Official moving day is likely going to be the first Saturday in February, though we'll know more once we've finished scheduling ALL THE THINGS! We're getting the bulk of the interior work done before we move all our stuff in, so we'll be getting all the walls repainted (they are currently different shades of gray, black, and green; it made sense for the previous owner's decor, but does make the rooms feel smaller), the wood floor in the living room/dining room/stairs refinished, the venting system in the attic redone, and a double handful of smaller miscellaneous stuff patched up. We're also paying a cleaning company to deep clean the kitchen and bathrooms, because after renting various places for the past 12+ years, we're tired of cleaning up other people's grime before we move into a place. Huzzah!!! --OneBoot :D

  6. Goblin Menace indeed! I was doing fine with the other group of goblins I did 2 weeks ago, but these little green bast...guys were not as fun. Wins: * Found an EXCELLENT new paintbrush - Master's Touch from Hobby Lobby. Dang! I've been missing this level of spring in the bristles and fine edge with them. Love it. * Tried diluting steel color with black ink to help with application. Worked great! Will do again. * Switched the Sta-Wet Palette paper that came with it to just simple parchment paper. I don't know who uses the actual paper in the Sta-Wet Palette, but that stuff is terrible! * Still using as much breast cancer awareness color pink (got like 4 bottles...need to use!) * dry brushing the hair came out much better this time. Lighter touch and more layers - worked better. Misses: * Eyes this time were more difficult. Tried doing those chibi eyes, but it wasn't as expressive this time. * Tried a base color of off-white in the eye - also didn't seem to give as much character to them. * Washed with Agrax Earthshade around the major bends and muscles. Didn't seem to work as well this time. I think it's time to try that black lining on the next goblin and see if Iike that instead. * using the new brushes have a bit of a learning curve to them. Much more springy and reduced my need for pressure, however this caused some interesting streaks when I didn't mean to. * I did it again! I tried using my finger to dab off an excess streak and ended up taking off some of the baselayer AND primer. With that being the second time it's happened - the best way I can describe what I did was the scene in Top Gun where the flight tower Captain gets a second fly-by. Overall the color of Goblin skin still works great, but basecoat of VCG Flat Green may not have been best. May just add black to Goblin Skin and then lighten it up as I go next time. Attempted different primers on them: Girl with spear - primed in black with Vallejo Black spray primer Chainmail goblin - primed in Vallejo Leather Brown spray primer (didn't like that as much...) Stone chuckers - both of them were done in paint-on Vallejo grey primer. (worked best) Overall, they aren't bad, but they aren't my best. Once I base them I'll feel better. Might even go back after a few days to touch them up to see if I can straighten out the things I missed. As always - open to feedback. Thanks for the tips on the Metallics thread. I put it to use, but still learning.

  7. This person clearly has nothing positive in their life. You’re a great painter and you run a great blog. Don’t let one sad person get under your skin, they aren’t worth it. :hugs:

  8. YAY BOOTBOOT! Congratulations to both of you for new house. Just remember that when the venting system is being done, make certain that they install the anti-goblin lasers in them. We don't need another IncidentTM .

  10. I can understand things like the Dwarf Crypt being a set, but I'm going to real disappointed if I have to go to ebay auctions to get the one elemental scion I wanted. They mostly line the walls of the basement and act as extra insulation. Seriously though, I paint them, and the lucky ones get used in games. Not being able to play has definitely cut down on the amount of painting I do. I'm wondering how many people are staring longingly at the KS page in between applying for jobs online. A lot of gamers are younger and without job security. Would love to have a safety bubble with our game group. Unfortunately we have a couple of guys who aren't taking precautions, and even though nobody has got sick yet I'm not risking it. It's been Roll20 for us for about 8 months now. The ability to have maps and handouts is nice. Everyone misses the minis though.

  11. Had a rough last night and this morning. Husband had nightmares all night which let neither of us sleep well. Woke up to a troll who commented on both my instagram and blog. (They used the same name for both so I know it was the same person.) They decided to tell me that I should learn how to paint and I had no right giving people advice. I was...not happy but did not engage. I blocked them on IG and marked the comment on my blog and spam since I couldn't figure out how to just delete it from the approval list on the blog comments. FIL came over this morning to take away tree branches from the recent storm. I never like it when the inlaws come over, especially since FIL was exposed to covid at work. In other news, we're trying to binge American Gods because I didn't do it before s3 started. We're currently on last episode of s2. We'll watch that when Husband gets up from his nap and the newest 2 tonight on TV. Probably some other things but I have the tail end of a migraine going on and it's making thinking straight not my strong suit right now.

  12. Look at it this way, somebody decided you are important enough to pay attention to. Probably someone who os in a bad place and need to bring others down to feel better. Ignore, block and carry on. I have seen your work, you can paint and you can give advice. Have fun doing so and accept that every now and then a bully will pop up. Again, ignore, block and carry on. Those people need to get a life. @OneBoot Congrats on the new house! And where exactly is this new M.E.O.W. Headquarters located? Asking for a friend... 13. These are somewhat of a continuation from another post, but the important thing is to note the improvements (along with the areas to grow). Wins: * Used brown as base color before applying bronze color to shingles of mail. Better coverage and color overall doing this. * Used VGC Yellow Ochre to dry brush over the faces and bring out the details. Good contrast and still liking the yellow/green pairing. * Didn't put as much time in worrying about the under-sides of armor or weapons. Saved time and who really sees it anyway? My work is more or less table-top ready, so good save on time. * Kept color palette relatively muted, which gave these little dudes a grungy feel. * Ink and steel mix worked better on the weapons. Misses: * The highlights on the small mail links didn't come out great. too light? Too dark? I can't tell. I can tell I just didn't like the outcome. * White teeth and white eyes? Too much. Should have dulled down the white with a little yellowish color or something. These guys don't use colgate. They use the blood of their fallen enemies. * Eyes with a kind of cat-eye look doesn't fit as well. Need a better idea on that. * Tried to put streaks of steel on weapons - not great outcome and needs improvement. * boots and dark colors. I just can't get it right! It's like books or black should be easy, but to me it just looks like primed parts that didn't get painted. HELP! Here they are - not based yet and lookin' like they are in an Orbitz commercial with those chompers. I might have to go back and wash them both literally and liberally with a brown wash. As always I'm open to any feedback.

  14. Yeah, elf the haters! I've got all comments on my blog filtered for spam, but it's nice to catch that broccoli before anyone else sees it. Don't let them get you down, trolls gonna troll. You're way better than them. Right? I feel like Michelangelo lied to me... @OneBoot Congrats!! I've started work on my second cardboard starship... though this one has a core of wood from a clementine box.

  17. Look at this cute fellow! But don't look directly at his eyes. Too late? Uh-oh, I'm sorry if you just turned to stone. Anyway ... this is the Basilisk, #77371 in Bones. The color scheme is inspired by the iridescent plumage of a bird, the White-faced Ibis (Plegadis chihi). My folders of saved wildlife references include a photo of an ibis whose wing has golden, green, and orangey-pink metallic tones, and its head is more purplish-pink. I clipped away part of the integral base and built up this rocky base with putty. I added bits of two metal figures as the basilisk's petrified victims: the head is one of the 3 options for the Death Warden (Dark Heaven 03083), and the leg is from my Dwarf Shieldmaiden (Warlord 14379). I imagine that the basilisk ate the rest of those 'statues' and left these for later snacking. The grass is a preformed "Winter Tuft" product (dull yellow-green and black) with painted highlights, and the leaves are dried oregano, fully painted. I had used this basilisk as a demonstration figure at ReaperCon 2019 ... or maybe 2018 ... in my "Painting Fur, Feathers, and Scales" class. It was all dark green, with just the front right shoulder area painted with highlights simulating smooth shiny scales. It sat on my shelf since then. I wanted to paint something small and relatively simple, so I mentally kicked around a few color schemes without conclusion until I rediscovered the image of the ibis last week. I spent a couple of hours wet-blending the colors, and then a few more hours glazing and stippling, shifting the scales green and pink and purple and yellow-ocher and orange, etc. Enjoy! Derek

  18. That troll can go suck a lemon. I volunteer with St John Ambulance as a first responder. I've taken probably 20 first aid courses in one form or another. I've learned that you can always learn something from someone, so don't be arrogant about the subject matter or the speaker, or you will lose that opportunity.

  19. Unfurl the mainsails and weigh anchor! Finally got around to showing off this fantastic pirate captain mini. Though I've collected quite a few pirate minis in preparation for a nautical D&D campaign, this model was the first I have painted outside of the LTP Kit. I felt he was missing something pretty important so I sculpted a hat for him. Pretty happy with the result. You can see more about how I painted him and my other nautical-themed minis in my Dark Tide WIP thread HERE. I am most proud of the jacket and sleeves which I wanted to appear as worn leather. I think I was successful. I look forward to painting up a crew for this captain. Recently discovered a few pirate crews from Warmachine that are calling my name.

  21. Okay, I stuck with a skull. I picked out one with it broken already and gouged out the cavity a bit more. I also sanded the back of it down so it sat properly on this wing. Then while looking at other skull options I came across a shield from the Bones IV KS. It matched the theme so I added it as a shoulder piece on the right shoulder. Now it's fully basecoated. I noticed some missed spots while working on the additions. Next up, picking out some differing stone colors and working on placement. Stay Tuned and Enjoy. Please Stay Safe.

  22. @Crowley do they have a specific size or shape in mind? I have some printed fighters that are pretty easy to whip out (right now a wing, xwing and viper clones,, but more are supposed to be clming) the shuttle package i have is pretty bic for 4 of them on a table. Of it uses the frostgrave system it might solve a long standing space trpg problem

  23. I forget where I read this, but I think part of the lore is something about the various warbands trying to stay one step ahead of pirate fleets. So that would explain why people are building them, although I can't say if this is going to have any in game purpose outside of scenery for certain scenarios.

  24. I choked on the 'scythe' - before noticing the horse was 'eating' somebody. Yeah, that mini is full of Nope. Other options - Blue Moon - RAFM - The RAFM one comes closest to The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The Auld Grump

  30. I want to say that one of the scenarios is supposed to take place in a shuttle bay with 4 shuttles. Not 100% sure on that, as I didn't see the original post, just people talking about it.

  31. I choked on the 'scythe' - before noticing the horse was 'eating' somebody. The Scythe does appear to be infested with an incurable case of ROIS. (Redonkulous Oversized Implement Syndrome) I don't know if it helps but, There is such a thing as a Horseless Headsman option from Reaper Minis: Both sculpted by Bobby Jackson; Both named Logar; different numbers; very different in stature. 2547 & 2180

  35. Pretty sure I need the laugh, so thanks. I am very nervous and on edge today. Can’t concentrate. Why? A car loan application is in the works. It’s not that I might be denied, but that it might be accepted. It’d be a second car, so a toy. A very expensive toy. But man, will this be fun to drive:

  36. Surely you can't be serious? Do, or do not, there is no try. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few....or the one. I swear by my pretty floral bonnet, I will end you. Inconceivable! There were many, mostly veggies, which I've come to enjoy. I can't think of anything I liked as a kid I won't consume now other than sugared drinks, but that's more of a "don't want my diabetes to kill me" kind of then rather than a dislike.....

  37. I disliked most all vegetables when I was a boy. Now there are quite a few that I enjoy...sprouts aren't one of them. The Golden Arches lost their luster as I grew older.

  39. Onions & alfredo sauce Green Peppers (this one was more or less due to eating pizza at a local joint after school with friends. Suddenly, one of the small pieces just jumped off the pizza. Yah we left after that.) Stuff I won't eat now: Soda. While it had no bearing on me getting a gall bladder attack a few years & having it removed, I just stopped drink it cold turkey. I think my last carbonated drink was a Sprite from McDs, a couple of days before I had surgery. I'm not a big fan of sugary cereals anymore but I'll still consume Frosted Flakes over Corn Flakes. Waffles. (I use to eat them all the time, whether they were home made or Eggo brand. I absolutely despise them now. Brownies

  40. I offer you knowledge, that you might know what happened on this day in history: 1591 – King Naresuan of Siam kills Crown Prince Mingyi Swa of Burma in single combat; date is now observed as Royal Thai Armed Forces day. 1778 – James Cook is the first known European to discover the Hawaiian Islands, which he names the "Sandwich Islands" (for the fourth Earl of Sandwich, then the acting First Lord of the Admiralty... yes there is a place called Sandwich in England). 1896 – An X-ray generating machine is exhibited for the first time by H. L. Smith.

  41. There was such a food. There are several that fit this category. In no particular order: Marshmallows Yellow Corn Pork Chops Karo Syrup Twinkies ...and that effervescent, corn syrupy, nadir of vileness: Mountain Dew And I don’t know how I forgot to place them on the second list—the will not touch list: Cheese Whiz and Kraft American Cheese

  42. Tomatoes. I'm still not that keen on them, but at least I will eat them now. There's a few heavily processed food items out there (like cheap hotdogs) that I loved as a kid but won't go anywhere near now.

  43. Turkey. I was not fond of turkey when I was a child. Probably because my mother overcooked it, and didn't take all that many measures to keep it relatively moist. Sadly, I'm still not the biggest fan of such, but if work gives me one, I definitely don't complain... Although I do prefer it when they give spiral hams... As for foods I enjoyed when younger? Biggest thing that comes to mind is hot dogs, I guess... But that's because of allergies. Not much comes out on the "I won't eat it now" list...

  44. I remember Mordheim had some rules/scenarios for encampments, and a ship would basically be that so it wouldn't be too difficult to rig up something similar for Stargrave, maybe having components for various upgrades for warbands/ships be based on looting tech from ruins on certain planets and such....also if small ships can be brought in as something more than static terrain pieces, that opens up the possibility of rigging up some kind of space/atmosphere level dogfighting rules... I haven't heard or read about anything like this, just pulling ideas out of thin air, but it's interesting to think about.

  47. I recently channeled my inner German and found a love of sauerkraut. Conversely, we used to eat liver sausage all the time on toast when I was growing up. I bought some, and I discovered that it tasted too much like...liver. I also can't eat certain foods like I used to. I loved pork ribs growing up, but they are too rich for my tummy these days. I also ate a leftover chocolate pop tart so the kids wouldn't and wondered why I liked them as a kid because they are disgusting.
