  1. A day in the Marine Corps is like a day on the farm! Every meal is a banquet. Every paycheck a forture. Every formation a parade! I love the corps. So, I've been hitting these a little at a time since the game was released. I haven't played the game (as I mostly want to recreate the old Leading Edge Games game), but I'm sure I will eventually. On with the show: These are from images I posted over in Off Topic. I just realized last night that I'd finished (or nearly so) over half the box! The eggs and facehuggers were done in batches. I could have done them all the same, but I wanted there to be slight differences. I wasn't able to find a lot of information on the actual prop eggs used, so I kind of winged it based on what others were doing. The eggs were Forest Green, Grass Green, and Jade Green--according to my notes. I think that I started with Pure Black on the bases and drybrushed the Forest Green and Grass Green. The fleshy bits were done in Golden Shadow, Golden Skin, and Golden Highlight for three closed and one open egg and one facehugger. The other set of eggs and facehugger were done with Tanned Skin, Tanned Highlight, and Fair Shadow. I am finding that I'm starting with a triad and then "bumping" it up (or down) to keep the colors "together" but add some variety. The first batch of crates are Stormy Grey, Cloudy Grey, and Misty Grey. Second batch of crates is Chestnut Gold, Palamino Gold, and Buckskin Pale. I am really pleased with the dirty look they have. The sealer was still drying on them, so they were still on the caps when I took the picture. The Weyland-Yutani logo is Pure White and Sunlight Yellow over Pure Black. Still six crates to go (2 will be red, 4 in blue or green). I've already made up some sort of weird rules to allow me to justify using multiple (non-grey) colors, also six computer terminals, and two sentry guns. Those have already been started, so will be quick to finish (hopefully). I've seen some folks do some great things with the terminal screens, but that won't be me.

  2. Hello all you Reaper Acolytes! So painted this one as a gift for a friend, now that she's got it, can finally show it off: A Thumper Standard Bearer, I think sculpted by Richard Kerr. It was so hard not go go all crazy Easter Bunny on this one, so added a few Easter eggs, quite literally. Hopefully his banner is legible! After listening quite often and watching Anne Forester's Twitch channel, one great tip she gave was to start with your free hand using a white base instead of black. I did so this time, so hopefully the banner text and the belt are a bit brighter than they otherwise would have been had I used a black base color. Anyhoos, enjoy and a premature Happy Easter to all!

  3. Got home from Reapercon and felt the need to paint something. One of the characters my son wanted to play was a shapshifter and I didn't have much in the way of animals so I grabbed some Reaper animals. I wanted some human figures as well and with the new Signium faction coming out in the new year I decided to add to my Cadwillion and lions. None of these pieces are exceptional but certainly fine for tabletop and produced in 4 days works for me Hope you enjoy

  4. I was unsure which of my hundreds of unpainted bones minis to attack so I asked my son to choose one. A demonkin paladin. I also included a baby basilisk because it wasn't my best paint job and I didn't want to create a unique thread just for a janky bad guy that will probably never be used. . . Great, now I have to make a baby basilisk encounter.

  6. Dave and Pete were a couple of drinking buddies who worked as aircraft engineers in Darwin, Australia . One day the airport was fogged in and they were stuck in the hangar with nothing to do. Dave said, 'Man, I wish we had something to drink!' Pete says, 'Me too. Y'know, I've heard you can drink jet fuel and get a buzz. You wanna try it?' So they pour themselves a couple of glasses of high octane booze and get completely smashed. The next morning Dave wakes up and is surprised at how good he feels. In fact he feels GREAT! NO hangover! NO bad side effects. Nothing! Then the phone rings. It's Pete. Pete says, 'Hey, how do you feel this morning?' Dave says, 'I feel great, how about you?' Pete says, 'I feel great, too. You don't have a hangover?' Dave says, 'No that jet fuel is great stuff -- no hangover, nothing. We ought to do this more often..' ' Yeah, well there's just one thing.' 'What's that?' 'Have you farted yet?' 'No.' 'Well, DON’T - 'cause I'm in New Zealand'

  7. Î never imagined that finishing some crates would give me such a sense of accomplishment! The yellow came out better than I hoped. I just hope the red and blue (or green) work as well.

  10. This is the Bones V Catoblepas sculpted by our very own forumite @TaleSpinner. This mini is just so great I had to pick up two of these during the kickstarter. One to paint for the table and the other to take my time with and make into a display piece. This is the one for the tabletop and I'm seriously looking forward to dropping it in front of my players. This critter strikes me as the kind of thing you'd find in a deep water wetland, stinky old algae covered lake, or a deep river in some forgotten wilderness. As I was painting it up I started to imagine how it would live in such environments. I can imagine that when submerged it's slightly buoyant, kind of like a hippo, and uses its wide hooves and tail to propel it through the water at a decent speed. The body seemed a bit fleshy to me with some sort of scales on its back. In my mind it's actually a pale flesh color all over and the back is just crusted up mud and plant material it wears as a sort of armor. When I go to do the display version of this I'm planning on flocking its back a little to drive that idea home. Its mouth isn't just the biggest under bite in the bestiary, but actually what it uses to filter its preferred vegetation from the swamps and streams it calls home. Which means I'm leaning towards the Claudius Aelianus description where he says it breathes poisonous gasses due to its diet. Finally, I decided that its head and the spikes on the ball of its tail aren't bone, but rather hoof material that is always growing. That would make it rather sharp and much more dangerous to those walloped or head butted by this thing. All in all I think this is a well thought out sculpt and one of my favorites from the recent kickstarter so far! Cheers all and thanks for looking!

  11. Well, it's about time I actually post something in this section, since I've had a WIP thread going for a little more than a year Here's a piece from Rotten Factory, though I believe this particular figure is no longer available. I really love their stuff, and have a half-dozen others to paint up. Overall, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I LOVE putting verdigris on things; I've realized it's one of the most satisfying parts of mini painting for me currently. I also like doing the sickly/rotten flesh. I'd say this is around a tabletop standard, maybe a little more effort than that. I could stand to do a little more highlighting on metals, but it's good enough that I'm calling it done. I can always do more work on it, if I really feel so inclined. Thanks for looking!

  12. Silly monster films. Modern kaiju are cool and all, but they lack the charm of the old style stop motion or a man in a rubber suit. I've been pretty lucky, or at least I was until this year. Don't really want to go into details on a public forum but the last few months have not been great. Then again, it could be a lot worse and I'll probably get better eventually. Painted would be my version of Dance of Death, mostly because Julie Guthrie is such a phenomenal sculptor. A friend of mine calls my version "Angry pinecone vs icecube" Unpainted would be this awesome dragon from Legend of Signum. He's not painted yet because I need to master NMM and OSL so I can do him justice.

  13. September 11th, a day of remembrance that many of us will hear about today. Here are a few other events you might not hear mentioned that occurred on this date: 1297 – Battle of Stirling Bridge: Scots jointly led by William Wallace and Andrew Moray defeated the English. 1522 – Ulisse Aldrovandi, Italian ornithologist and botanist reckoned by some to be the father of natural history studies, and the driving force behind one of the first botanical gardens in Europe, was born. 1792 – The Hope Diamond, which weighs 45.52 carats, was stolen along with other French crown jewels when six men broke into the house where they were stored.

  14. So, I signed up for Paramount+ and started watching on my computer. And it started skipping. I decided I'd look for an app and turns out that there is one. I put it on my old $20 phone and... There's no skipping. Like, at all. I guess I figured out what the problem is. The only good news is that Lower Decks is as good as I imagined it. However, I need to clean my apartment.

  15. Postmortem time!! I made it safely back to Michigan after a not unpleasant couple of flights. I'm thankful the nasty weather blew itself out so the delay was only 45 minutes in Detroit. Still, the water in the basement was kinda unfortunate. Ok, so ReaperCon was a rousing success. All the events were well-attended and the attendees seemed happy. By all accounts customer satisfaction was very high. People were required to wear masks in the hotel and in the convention areas and for the most part everybody complied. Wearing a mask for 3+ hours running games was a drag but oh well. Attendance was very good with most days selling out. As for myself, all seven of my six player events were sold out before the con. We had a few no-shows but there were always a few alternates lurking near my table and these wise folks got a seat as a reward for their diligence. Six of the seven events were directly tied to this years narrative arc. Captain Barty the Redd had a mad on and sought an apocalypse dishing artifact known as the Pearl of Night. The perilous yarn played out over the course of 18 real hours with the players first learning about Barty's plan on the Grimmaw Archipelago then later foiling Barty's plan to release a plague on Brinewind, finally culminating in the players acquiring the Pearl of Night but then losing it to Barty when the old rotter bushwacks 'em on the godsforsaken nameless island inhabited by Lovecraftian monstrosities. The adventure wrapped up with the PCs unleashing the Pearl (a house sized sphere of annihilation) on Barty's fleet while the Brinewind fleet assaulted Barty's rotters. Blood and thunder!!! We had a grand ol' time but Barty's revenge has cost the Savage Coast dearly. Whole settlements have been wiped out, the sea is tinged blood red, and nearly a quarter of Brinewind has burned from riots and withering off-shore cannonfire. Worse yet, Brinewind has suffered a tragic loss: The Shoalguard Lighthouse was utterly and completely destroyed when a derelict galleon smashed into the island before its powder stores detonated. The resulting explosion annihilated the structure to the foundation. In the end Barty's ship was smashed to flinders, Barty was killed and his decapitated corpse was tossed to a titanic kraken: the Mother of Hydras Maersaluth took her wayward son into the crushing dark depths. Rest assured this isn't the last you'll hear of Brinewind and the Savage Coast. We've produced two Landlubber's Guides the first Brinewind the second Savage Coast. A third is in the works comprised of all the stuff we couldn't fit into Savage Coast. Tentatively titled Wylot's Addendum, the third and final guide is penned by the perpetually bellicose bookworm Albor Wylot, Chronicler Third Class. It along with the other Landlubber's Guides should be available soon. No formal announcement on next years plan has been made but res assured, we're already talking about it and I'm crazy excited to share it with ya'll. If you loved Dreadmere and the Savage Coast you're gonna love what's coming next. Big shout out to all the Reaperfolks: Ron, Adrienne, Ed, Dave, Michael, John O, and so many many others who put on a helluva show. An even bigger shout out to the fans without whom ReaperCon wouldn't exist. So many great players over the weekend. Ya'll make the hardwork totally worth it! Stay safe! >>ReaperWolf

  17. Been a bit too long since I did some painting so I decided to finish off a few piece, a TSR halfling thief that I'd primed... around the time of my birthday last year... or was it the year before...? What is even time anymore? And also a goblin cutter from the Legend of Drizzt board game, which I'd primed up and started work on a few weeks (months?) ago and just kind of lost inspiration. They came out a lot rougher than I expected, unfortunately. And the photo of the halfling makes his skin look deader than it looks when you see it proper... EDIT: SO the next day feeling a lot better I decided to go back and touch them up. I'm still not 100% happy with the goblin but the hobbit is a massive improvement. I redid the entire skin so he looks less dead, too. The old versions are still up for comparison.

You can say he's a happy dwarf to be out of his hole, I must be painting too many Bronze Age minis, because to me he looks like he's about to give a very enthusiastic sermon on the mount. @Glitterwolf I like the Brutus bust the best; it really does look like him. 24. If I tried really hard I could probably come up with a top 50 favourite minis, but picking just one is too much. Heck, I couldn't even pick a favourite mini out of what's on my painting desk at the moment (Currently it would be a tie between Angry Warrior Lady and Fancy Elven Archer (Not my pictures), although that opinion would undoubtedly change if I had another look at my desk).

  25. I made anice lunch this afternoon for me and my girl. For those who don't like ( or know how) to cook... There's no cooking involved. It's all about presentation. Two kinds of Hummus, Olives, Bread, Apple, Grapes, Red Bell Pepper ( from a jar, peppers in garlic oil), Sundried Tomatoes and Feta Cheese. You can of course switch any kind of these things for something else.

Now I have one Krabbe, two left arms, and six poppets! There some interesting potential with this many minions.

  31. That's difficult. I don't think I can really choose one. Stuff I painted and consider among my favorites ( The Owlbear was a gift from @Corsair, I painted it, The Asian Dragon was a gift from @Kangaroorex which I also painted), The Boxer Bust resembles Brutus.

  32. Some time ago, I received a set of Drunk'n Dragon miniatures as a gift. I am strictly an amateur painter, having only gotten into the hobby in the past year (well, at least since high school 20+ years ago). The set has five copies of five models, so I thought it would be good to experiment and practice on. I've been progressing through them pretty slowly, but below are what I've done so far. This sorceress was the first one I painted out of the box. I had just finished the Reaper Layer Up kit, so I used the same instructions for that kit's Anirion for this one. The staff she came with looked like spaghetti, so I swapped in a piece of wire wrapped around a pebble. The base was dried coffee grounds sealed with PVA. The eyes came out googly, but overall I thought it turned out pretty well. I got a set of Army Painter D&D paints, so I tried them out on this ogre. I also experimented with basing. The base is a cut 1" dowel rod disc. I used a mix of plaster, sand, PVA, and cheap brown acrylic paint for the mud. It's hard to tell in the pics, but I was able to get a pretty good ogre footprint in there before it dried. I also had a better detail brush here, so I was able to get the eyes and teeth down. Pics didn't come out great on this goblin, but I feel like I did a pretty good job on this one. Instead of the Goblin Green from Army Painter, I mixed my own green with Reaper Marigold Yellow and Heather Blue. Purple was a mix of Heather Blue and (I think) Dragon Red. I used the same material on this base as the ogre, but I press a stone into the top to get the rough pattern, then carved out the flagstones as it was drying. I'm keen on the effect. By the time I got to this kobold, I was feeling bold about color mixing and layering. The result is a volcano kobold(?) with maroon skin, an orange tunic, and green and blue eyes. I got pretty hit or miss with the color mixing, and some of my shades turned out pretty splotchy. I also experimented in making my own wash with watered down black. It didn't do much for me. Again, pic quality isn't great (trying to figure out how to photograph better), but the skin tone layering turned out pretty good. Followed up the volcano kobold with a tundra kobold. New tools at my disposal: some Folkart paints I picked up at Michael's (Navy Blue, True Blue, and Black Flash), some basing sand from the same, Reaper washes (Black Wash, Flesh Wash, Brown Wash), and a set of bases from Amazon. Still learning how to really use the washes - I toned him down darker than I meant to with the brown wash - but I think the base turned out nicely. I painted the fifth sculpt in the kit, a bandit archer, but I haven't been able to get a good photo of her yet. In painting it, however, I learned that painting yellow over gray is a fool's errand, and I'm already working on version 2.0. for her. Anyway, that's the nonsense I've been up to. Hopefully I'll get better working on these guys and maybe come up with some real creative versions by the time I get to the fifth in each line.

  34. @Glitterwolf Thanks! Wish I had gotten to this level of detail the day of, but I don't like being rushed 😉 Here he is after five hours. Really coming together well. Need to finish up the "ropes" on the clubs, and the wrappings. Not sure if going with a bone color on them is the right approach? What color would you all recommend to compliment the other colors but not be "out of place" in a swampy environment?

  36. I lthink a big shift in the numbers was the lack of the gaming population. Last con, all of the game tables for the societies/leagues were packed (PFS & SFS and AL). While I did see some representation the tables didn't see as full and I had heard that some games had to be canceled due to lack of players or GMs. I would venture that a large number of those extra 1600 were gamers whose main focus is not painting but gaming. I know that I talked to a bunch of people at the game tables last con that didn't paint. RCon die-hards might be more likely to show up for this years limited con, thus more participants and entries per capita. But to know for sure you would need to send out and receive surveys and do some real number crunching rather than rely on my theory crafting.

  46. Just one? That's a tough call. I've got two on my work from home desk that always cheer me up a bit when I'm stuck inside doing paperwork instead of kicking around in a swamp somewhere. So I'll say it's a tossup between them. The one on the left is a happy little dwarf from Bears Head Minis and the one on the right is what I'm assuming is an Entling from one of the Reaper familiar packs. The dwarf is so excited to be out of his hole and in nature that he's stripped off his armor and is dancing about in his knickers. The Entling has his own little glen with a pretty little wetland. Neither of these are intended for gaming. Just fun little things that cheer me up. Of course, if you ask that question again tomorrow you may get a completely different answer.
