  1. Fun little piece. I attempted to paint it in the style of Costa Rican coffee wagons. It was a real challenge, given the irregularities of the wheel surface. I wish it had a donkey, goat or ox to pull it. It will stand upright by itself on some surfaces, but I stuck a block under it to stabilize during photography.

  2. This could be more exciting, but it's not. I chose this as a test piece before I tackle Dragons Don't Share II. Nice piece, it came together in a jiffy. I'm trying to copy the local limestone, and didn't quite get there with this, but it's a starting point.

  3. When I received this Bones 4 mini with my Kickstarter back in the day, he was headless. Reaper sent me a fresh one as they do. I had an extra beholder eyestalk from the Wizkids beholder, and decided to carve it into the head slot and make an aberration!! I’ll paint the normal one to match, and then he’ll be a nice surprise boss in a future dnd game.

  4. This has been a WIP on my desk for far too long. I tried some things that didn't work, repainted her, got some advice, repainted her, didn't like the way it looked, repainted her... realized I just had to stop before I really ruined it.

  5. I think last night might be my most memorable introduction of myself. I was painting after getting the boy down, and I heard the new downstairs neighbors out on the patio having a dinner party. No biggie. A little bit later the tone of the chatter changed, and something caught my ear. Someone was doing a voice. I stepped out onto my balcony and looked down. The food was all put away, and everyone had their screens out. I couldn't make out most of what was being said, but then... "Make a sleight of hands check" followed by the clatter of dice. They were playing D&D!

Damon, who likes to read old books written in strange languages: Dr Weird Psychic, a student of the mystic arts who needs no introduction: Laura Craft, field archaeologist and explorer: And dear Dr Home, the brilliant surgeon with a lousy bedside manner: All are presented on bases from Secret Weapon.

  9. This is the second miniature I've ever painted, and the first with Reaper paints. I figured that a brush holder would come in handy for the all the Bones V painting in my future! The only Reaper paints I own are the Bones V paints (Learn to Paint kit and the two collections), plus two bottles of Reaper MSP 9038 Rainy Gray. Overall I'm really pleased with the way this first attempt worked out! I primed everything with 9038 Rainy Gray, then put on the base coats. The wings and ears gave me the most trouble as I had generously overpainted with 9410 Dragon Green, and was attempting a w

  10. For the ReaperCon MSP Open this year, I painted the master copy of the White Drake I sculpted for Dark Sword (it will be released for sale in 2022). I decided to do him in glacial coloration inspired by a glacier I saw while on a cruise in AK. For the Sculpting story, click here. For the Painting WIP, click here. Oh, and I won a gold medal for him in the Open category. (Bear in mind that that is a 1" base)

When the Great Pumpkin rises out of the pumpkin patch on Halloween to bring toys and gifts to the deserving, and a painful smiting to the pumpkin smashers, it is vital that He should covering fire if He needs it.... Four of these were among the first minis I painted for the Army of the Great Pumpkin, and I finally got around to getting them enough friends to make a unit. The large Jack O Lantern is from Reaper's pumpkin pack, I don't remember who manufactured the tree, I picked it up in the model railroad section of a hobby store sometime around 1997. There's also an Army Painter Was

  15. Tired... but here's your morning trivia for what happened on September 17th: 1683 – Dutch scientist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek wrote a letter to the Royal Society describing "animalcules", later known as protozoa. 1859 – Joshua A. Norton, born in England and living in San Francisco, declared himself "Norton I, Emperor of the United States." Most citizens of San Francisco considered him insane or eccentric, yet humored him during his 21-year "reign". 1983 – Vanessa Williams became the first black Miss America.

  18. Game mechanics aren't covered by either patent or copyright. If you name the mechanic, you can trademark the name, but that is avoided by not using that name. It is also why some games use proprietary dice - which can be trademarked and copyrighted. (Other times, they are a gimmick, or just a way to weight probability - Rumbleslam is an example off the latter.) The Auld Grump It probably was never challenged - and I don't think WotC ever tried to defend it, in any case. Sort of like that Alabama law that no one is allowed to use their bac

  23. Congratulations! Yes, very definitely an outside toy. If you think about it, it's actually perfect. The first step in troubleshooting anything electronic is hit it with something heavy. (Swearing is optional, but I find that it helps immensely.)

  24. No, BD! No! Hand grenades are an OUTSIDE toy, not an INSIDE toy! Game mechanics aren't covered by either patent or copyright. I think the only GW stuff we buy is Contrast paint. And if anyone had a similar product we wouldn't buy GW.

  26. Back in the Nineties GW sent a letter to stores carrying their miniatures that they should not let those miniatures be used for non-GW games. Rick laughed, crushed the missive up into a little ball, and threw it in the trash. GW, then as now, is a little crazy. The Auld Grump

  27. Got this pair in my VIP bag when at ReaperCon. Got their base coats done while there and then finished them when I got home. I like the semi-demented look that they have; they could either be secret assassins or some backwoods cooks who just look a little ‘off’.

  29. Set myself on fire. I was at a party with a couple friends and a whole bunch of people I didn't know and was bored, so I decided to liven things up a little. I liberally doused the black leather motorcycle jacket I was wearing with alcohol, used my Zippo to ignite myself, and calmly walked around the corner with flames licking up the arms of my jacket. Instant icebreaker.

  30. While this is true, GW did try to copyright the term 'space marine' and the courts shut them down. That is why things have been renamed Adeptus Astartes, Astra Miltarum, Drukhari, etc., so that they can hold those as unique IP. Gadzooks! What kind of dire straits is the business in if they have the barbarian doing IT?!?!!

  31. Thanks, y'all. <3 I really did have a ton of fun at ReaperCon, like always! Definitely had some extra drinks on Saturday though, but I've worked hard for years to get to that point, so I was fine with it haha! One of the photos is actually my phone background now; it's been really helpful getting me past these last few weeks. I may be super tired and struggling right now, but it's a great reminder that it's not forever, and y'all are still here! My love's HR stuff finally went through today, so we're hoping to have it all cleared up in a couple weeks.

  32. I know, right? The guy was claiming that game mechanics are protected by copyright because his friend who tried to make his own version of 40k got a C&D letter from GW. Now it's entirely possible that his friend was copying more than the game mechanics, and the C&D was a legit use of it, but given how heavy GW has been known to be with C&Ds, it's hard to say. I know first hand at how little it takes (took?) to get GW to send a letter. My old game company got hit with a letter from GW for some decals we did - someone told them we were doing space marine chapter dec

  33. How long has it been since I started a show off thread???? Too long. I have missed everyone and hope to get back to at least a semi regular amount of posts. Figured I’d start with a Reaper mini. For the forum peeps that attended ReaperCon 2019 you may have seen my version of Derek’s beautiful sculpt O-Sayumi or affectionately named Akiko. I had a great time painting this lovely lady. Since I didn’t complete her until Thursday night of the con I didn’t get any photos until last week. 34. A day late, but I will admit that my favorite is still, after many years, a college incident in which I went to meet a lab partner, and was ushered in with a cry of “Hey, Zirka, it’s the guy with the voice!”. I take a certain amount of pleasure in having been gifted with a radio announcer/podcaster voice. Unfortunately, I haven’t found a podcast topic that suits yet… I’m going to go real here, and say “Apollo 11” …

  36. So after a substantial break from painting I purchased a new toy….a resin 3D printer (as I don’t have enough unpainted minis). So far I have enjoyed printing some minis even though my favorite will always be pewter. My first choice to paint of the batch I printed to knock off the rust was this pretty lady Nihae. I printed her at 87.5% as Artisan Guild is too large to suit the rest of my collection. She is about the size of a standard reaper mini printed at this scale. I printed some ferns and quickly put her on a base so she is ready to hit the table sometime soon. C&am

  37. From the Borderlands Campaign thread in General Fantasy - She leaves out the detail that Wednesday wasn't game night - it was a family dinner, and suddenly Megan and her mum dropped into character, including their voices. There are times Megan is so much like her mum. The Auld Grump - they were talking about something that happened in their characters' past - and, yes, apparently they burned down somebody's barn as part of their characters' shared history.... Poor George had no idea what was going on. I've known them longer than he has.

  42. I still can't figure out how WotC managed a patent on "tapping": https://blawgit.com/2019/01/30/bard-game-patents-magic-the-gathering/ Fortunately, it's now expired. I can understand why the guy may have thought that mechanics can't be copyrighted. I certainly thought that when I designed my first game, Checkered Flags. When we talked about publishing it, one of our concerns was that I had used the same cornering card mechanic that FASA's Circus Imperium did. We approached FASA at a game con about licensing the mechanic and they kindly laughed at us as they looked through our cards an

  43. I think they've backed off some, after getting burned by some of the legal actions they've taken, such as going after Spot the Space Marine. They have also made a big shift in what they call their stuff now, to better protect it - While they're still Space Marines, their models are given names like Primaris Eradicators and Primaris Intercessors. On the fantasy side, they've gone even more extreme - instead of Elves and Dwarves, they're calling them things like Aelf and Duardin. Note that it took me 10 minutes to figure out their new names for those races to write this post - I wasn't sure b

  45. I may have overreacted. After I downloaded the program text and poured through it, I found that the change only needed the removal of one program line. I did that, and tweaked some programming so that it could be toggled on/off. After I did that, the tech who did the programming in the spring tells me "Oh yeah, I meant to get back to that and finish it up before fall." I didn't do it the same way he wanted it done, so now he's forced to clean up my "mess."

The recruiter said people are dropping like flies, so I'll probably have something to do. 12-14 hours, but the pay is decent and it's on my day off. Mad money!
