  1. I went for a “dried” coral bed look bc I just couldn’t envision a living coral bed being a golem. Probably overthought it.

  4. Today's quizzle was inspired by a player at a Battletech game in a con at least 20 years ago. I called him aside, asked him if he was on some kind of medicine that caused such a pungent smell. He replied no and then I asked him if he had washed that day. He replied he didn't care if he smelled. I then kicked him out of the Battletech game. He complained to the Con boss who told him to go take a bath or he would be removed from the Con entirely. That's where the GAGG line comes from in my signature.

  5. On the up side, experience has taught me that the people who don't really want to be in charge are usually the best people to have in charge. "The major problem—one of the major problems, for there are several—one of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them. To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it. To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job. To summarize the summary of the summary: people are a problem." 9. From Reaper Discord: Check out the new promos when you buy from the Reaper store. AFAIK, this was not announced during Reaper Live or on any other venue, but discovered by The_Peasant on Discord, and Tasine confirmed it. Is it the Month of the Elephant?

  11. I always have this terrible fear that it's me. I work around animals. If you spend enough time with anything smelly, you become immune to it. Sometimes I don't notice how much I smell like a farmyard until I step into the shower and the first cloud of eau de manure puffs up. I try to always take that precautionary shower before I go anywhere off the farm, so I'll usually show up with wet or frozen hair. When I was working in a camp up north, one guy forgot his laundry powder and decided to use body wash in the laundry machine. It was a terrible idea. That stuff was intense. I think we sent someone to town to hotshot the guy some proper laundry powder.

  12. I actually went 2 and 2, but I'm printing out a bunch of extra spear guys from some Ewok STLs I got a year or so ago. There are also bow guys in there to proxy for the slingers. I'll see how they play and decide if I need to buy even more Ewoks later. Today I was in to the FLGS to hang to while waiting for the kid to finish physio (he dislocated his shoulder again a week or so ago). They had some new sanding sticks in. And tonight when I went to pack my laptop bag, I remembered I picked this up last week when I was in. They got in one of the Evas I was missing. Just the 03 and 08 left to get.

  13. I only remember "feeling it" once on a cruise ship. A little wobbly down the hallway, curtains swaying during dinner, and they did have to drain the pools because water was being sloshed out. The rest of our days were quite mild on the rocking, just that one night. I do not generally do well (seasick-wise) on smaller vessels. Even in 1 ft seas. I learned the hard way, despite loving roller coasters and carnival rides and being able to do things like read in the car with no issues. I wasn't expecting to have a problem offshore on a 30 ft boat.

  14. I'm guessing destroyer, but am not positive. The gun is covered with, appropriately enough, a gun cover; a purpose made covering used to protect weapons from sea spray. (or in this case, a bath) Found it: The ship in the video was either HMNZS Wellington or Otago. You can see the 25mm cannon in the photo without the foul weather overwrap.

  15. Got a big one for you this time Reaperites. Circumstances lead to ...quite a lot... of painting time this month so I'm going to be changing up my usual format a bit to keep it sane. I've posted everything in group shots this month with the model details posted below them. If there's a particular mini you want a better shot of, please just ask or check me out here. 19. Blender should work fine, if he wants to play along during class. He'll keep up better with a tool he knows. This class will, necessarily, be more of a high speed brain dump/demo. To cover the material, I am not going to be able to pace it so everyone can do everything during class, but we certainly can do some after sessions on the main floor or at my art station where we deep dive after class for anyone interested.

  20. Con that I attend regularly used to have this problem, which was probably 50% caused by the venue; tin shed, without air conditioning, in the middle of summer (so 35-40+ celsius), with far too many people packed into the space. More recently it improved significantly through reducing the number of tables in the space and the hall getting air conditioning, but there are still some Gamey Gamers who attend

  21. I couldn't find any examples of this mini in the Show-off forum so in my continuing service of underrepresented models, I'm putting her up here despite only having a very quick paint job (started Saturday, finished Sunday) so I could use her for RCL July theme. Full disclosure, I LOVE Sandra Garrity's work. I bought this mini about 20 years ago with the intent of making a full WHFB unit of female dwarves. Nowadays they have her tagged as a halfling due to scale creep.

  25. Given I only attend ReaperCon these days, my main focus is enjoying time with all my friends, meeting new friends, teaching my classes, and connecting with everyone. It also allows me to connect face to face with Ron and the other Reaper peeps and the other sculptors. We often use ReaperCon to share new techniques and discoveries we have made with each other to help us all get better. I also love seeing what everyone creates each year and also competing myself. I think competing pushes me each year to both actually get something painted, and to be better than I was the last year as much as I am able. I like the way you socialize; my mouth is still drooling when I remember that maple fudge you brought last year...

  26. If I can get to play games, I'll play games. New and old! Then it's mostly browsing the booths or attending panels/seminars if one grabs my attention. I'm not really a competitive person, so I rarely participate in those, or do it for fun more than anything else. RCon is the only one where I also get to take classes and socialize like crazy (for me).

  28. Carriers have a lot more heavy "loose stuff" in the form of aircraft and servicing equipment than almost any other type of ship. Even when chained down in a "triple chain" arrangement with three tie-down chains on each securing point there is only so much tilt the equipment can stand before something exceeds the designed maximum strain rating. I'm actually surprised at the 60 degree spec., as that is more than double the amount of deck displacement from horizontal the average passenger is going to be able to deal with. But it is also encouraging in that it is highly unlikely one of these vessels is going to capsize short of being swept up in a tsunami. GEM You obviously never had to deal with "Air-Ops". GEM

  30. i have. But I haven’t been to a con in quite some time. i haven’t noticed it in shops, though. Although I don’t exactly hang out there, either. i will be the first to admit that my hygiene has lacked in the past, but something happened in my teen years and I’ve gotten a bit better since then.

  31. It wasn't me!!! Cons, well considering ReaperCon is the only Con I've actually have attended, yes & no. No, when we were at the factory, which was odd considering how confined we were there. Yes, at the Embassy. I guess grown-up RCon brings more people in, thus more "gamey" attendees. Locally, there has been a couple of guys that have showed up to the FLGS that were ripe enough that have made my eyes water. On the opposite side of the spectrum, some colognes & perfume wearing have been almost worse on the senses.

  34. This is how my bones 5 was packed. The baggies were in individually because they were add-ons and extras, the boxes on the left were the expansions I picked and the paint set. The M.E.O.W. agents are box inspectors and provided themselves.

  35. I try to get in a game, preferably a new and interesting one but I will play old favorites, too. 2nd choice is the paint-and-take, which is more common now than it used to be. I used to really like it at Origins and GenCon because it introduced me to new figure manufacturers. I like to browse the vendors to see what is new and trending, but I rarely buy anything but figures. I have enough accumulated game related crap like dice, dice bags, artwork, jewelry, t-shirts, etc. Reapercon is the only con I attend that has classes, and I try to get ~3 each year.

  38. Gotta love it when 2 seperate orders come in on the same day, Blick & Burbank Hobbies. Blick: Sta-New brush holder. The bigger slots are kinda useless but overall appears to be useful. Paint Puck - I thought this one was bigger then the one I have, buy I guess this is the regular size. Helpful little item. Sharpie chisel tips & black bullet tip - RCON map making. The bullet marker is dented on the end. Annoying, but not enough to complain about it to them. Burbank: KS Metals Stainless steel sheet - will go under my RCON entry (magnetized). Evergreen polystyrene sheet -sidewalk. Pretty much graph paper, going to use this to make a cheater sheet for Speedpaints 2.0. BSI - tips & CA fine tips. Local hobby store is out of these, so figure just stock up with this order

  39. Destroyers are a "whole 'nother world" from the Carrier Navy. I have a mental image of a Destroyer actually becoming "airborne", as in daylight below the keel as it goes between wave tops. Special Props for the Destroyer Fleet and the MEN who serve them. GEM

  41. Just looked it up. Google says a cruise ship would have to tilt to 60 degrees before it would tip over. That’s a lot. But, ya put engines, fuel, and other liquids down low so probably true.

  44. Yes. I'm honestly surprised that anyone here has NOT had this experience. This is one of the things I distinctly remember about attending GenCon in the 90s. I was a teenager back then, but I like to think that the fact that I noticed the smells means my personal hygeine was not a problem...

  45. @kristof65--that's a really cool looking project! It's totally up to you, of course, but I think a separate project thread would be interesting. Either way, please keep us updated. I, for one will be following along. I've never been on a cruise ship, but I'd imagine you would have had to be in some rough seas for it to move a whole lot, since they're so big. (At least compared to what I'm used to) Rough seas
