Battle Report: The Road To CAVCon!

A quick piece of advice for MiniAddict: The way that Ritter force is set up, the "Specialist" squad could be a legitimate Recon squad, except for the required primary/secondary balance. However, the Fire Support squad could just as easily be the Specialist squad instead, leaving your current Specialist squad the opportunity to be a Recon squad. That'd buy you the option to bury a card from the draw deck once per turn, for no real drawbacks that I can see.

    CAV Secret Santa 2018

Exactly. I'm one of those who hasn't received anything yet, though I'm not sure if it's just delayed, if it got lost in the mail, if the person who got it realised how expensive shipping to Australia was and quietly backed out, or if personal circumstances totally unrelated prevented them from completing it and sending - and ultimately, I don't care. While I'm disappointed, I'm not disappointed that I didn't get my shiny, I'm disappointed that I didn't get the chance to tell that person how much I appreciate their work and to celebrate our shared love for CAV. I hope everything is okay with them, and I'm definitely *not* holding them accountable - these things happen. I signed up for this with the expectation that I would spend some money and time sending someone a CAV and making their day brighter - the fact that I would get a mini in return was an after thought.

The Grand Order of the Temple

I'll be using my Templar minis for my 99th Auxiliary. About half of their TO&E will be exclusively Templar units, allowing me to field them as a Templar-aligned faction, with the other half being a mishmash of Open, Independent, and Outright-Taken-From-The-Cold-Dead-Hands-Of-Our-Foes (mostly Terran and Malvernis so far, though I'm considering borrowing some Adonese and Ritterlich stuff too)

A lot of the old metal designs can be found in the CAV Construction Program with images, even if they are no longer produced.

I have got some renders of stuff that I've designed for CAV and would love to show it off, but I'm hesitant to show it if it hasn't already been seen in the Kickstarters/construction program without CAVBoss's go-ahead. I think it could be a good way to build some hype and community involvement, but it would need to be with the clear understanding that things may change, both in terms of stats and art. Certainly the Other Big Stompy Robot Game (you know the one) does well showing designs of mechs before minis come out.

ATTN: TERRAN COMMAND, EARTH OPERATIONAL THEATRE The following communication was intercepted at 1003UTC (Earth local) between an unidentified unit and a covert relay satellite. "Malvernis Command, this is Snickerdoodle 18. We have touchdown in target region. Over." "Snickerdoodle, Command. Acknowledging touchdown in target region. Rendezvous with local guide Uniform Sierra Papa Sierra and proceed to destination building. Command out."

    Homebrewed CAV: Swallowtail

The Swallowtail is a heavy recon chassis produced by Borsig-Spline for the Adon Economic Confederation. Roughly the size of the Mantis, the Swallowtail sacrifices armour for what is an impressive speed for a CAV its size, preferring to flank enemy forces for a surgical strike with its twin Herker heavy PBGs. Homebrewed CAV: Swallowtail

Thanks! This and a few others (the Vindicator became the Fire Drake, the Silverfish became the Growler, and the Dart became... okay, the Dart, actually) started my path into designing for CAV. It's a little short on detail for my current standards - but that's mostly because it's two and half years old, and hasn't been subject to the the expert critiquing that CAVBoss and SCUG give my official models (It's a pain at the time, but they really do know how to make a model pop). With the Adon somewhat covered in KS2, the Swallowtail's chances of making it into the official line is slim... and with that cockpit, it really has to be an Adonese CAV rather than being repurposed for someone else like the Silverfish was. I may go back over it, detail it up, and put it up on Shapeways at some point... though there are other, newer designs that haven't quite fitted in and have never appeared here, and I might work on them instead. We'll see. :D

    Cav Kickstarters 4 & 5 discussion

Just as a caution, don't speculate too hard there. For example, I've finished designing the *appearance* of the Mamba, and it's been handed off to Jon - and that's what we've seen in the KS previews. From there, though, it needs to be made into a file that's able to be fabricated. *That* involves working with the mold makers to make sure each part is oriented so that detail is preserved and the mold isn't damaged in the process of removing the part, and that's where the money starts needing to be available before we can proceed. With a design as small as the Mamba, there's lots of places where things could wind up outside the tolerances that the molds can reach (the exhaust pipes, the headlights, etc), requiring adjustments to be made to strengthen those details or work them into the main bulk of the part. We do our best to work within boundaries we expect will work, but the proof isn't until it actually gets fabricated, and there's always a chance things won't work out quite the same. But yes, some stuff is already designed. And on a completely unrelated note, I'm personally looking forward to the Arbalest, Avenger, Destrier, Eagle, Knight, Mamba, Stalker, Ammit, Anhur, Horus, Serket, Armada, Bruin, Cossack, Hound, Mongol, and Sunder. ;) Edit: restored a lost 's'.

    The Ritterlich Republic

Yeah, that change caught me as well. I had intended to have a pair of Cheetahs with a pair of (metal) Jaguars as a fast cavalry Attack squad (the 24. Geistertrupp)... then the Cheetah became a Fire Support CAV. At the moment, my 1st Ophiuchi Brigade (and technically it's more a reinforced abteilung so far) is more of a 45,000 point TO&E to draw smaller units out of than a real force. 1. Königinschwadron 1. Königinwache (Attack): 4x Rhino II (3904) 2. Königinwache (Attack): 4x Tiger (2204) 2. Dreistschwadron 4. Aufklärungstrupp (Recon): 4x Catamount (1764) 17. Streikzug (Mech. Infantry): 6x PA Infantry with MARs, 6x Lynx (1422) 22. Streikzug (Mech. Infantry): 3x LA Infantry with LBRs and rat, 3x LA Infantry with panzerfausts and light machineguns, 2x Armadillo (817) 24. Geistertrupp (Specialist): 2x Jaguar, 2x Cougar (1256) 3. Raketenschwadron 5. Raketentrupp (Fire Support): 1x Cheetah, 3x Tiamat (2925) 6. Raketentrupp (Fire Support): 1x Cheetah, 3x Tiamat (2925) 7. Raketentrupp (Fire Support): 4x Silverback (2820) 16. Raketenzug (Fire Support): 4x Manticore (1472) 4. Sturmschwadron 3. Flugabwehrtrupp (Attack): 4x Sabertooth (1532) 8. Schutzentrupp (Attack): 1x Rhino II, 3x Cataphract (2836) 9. Schutzentrupp (Attack): 1x Rhino II, 3x Cataphract (2836) 10. Schutzentrupp (Attack): 4x Tiger (2204) 5. Panzerschwadron 11. Schutzenzug (Attack): 4x Wolverine (1500) 12. Schutzenzug (Attack): 4x Lion (1420) 13. Schutzenzug (Attack): 4x Lion (1420) 14. Schutzenzug (Attack): 4x Lion II (1472) 15. Schutzenzug (Attack): 4x Lion II (1472) 10. Mörtelkompanie 18. Mörtelzug (Mortar): 6x HA Infantry with medium mortars, 2x Armadillo (886) 19. Mörtelzug (Mortar): 6x HA Infantry with medium mortars, 2x Armadillo (886) 20. Mörtelzug (Mortar): 6x PA Infantry with medium mortars, 3x Armadillo with Loadmaster (1269 +240) 21. Mörtelzug (Mortar): 6x PA Infantry with medium mortars, 3x Armadillo with Loadmaster (1269 +240) Originally, the Cheetahs in 5. and 6. Raketentrupps were the two Cougars now in 24. Geistertrupp - with the Cheetah becoming more of an anti-air platform, it moved to look after the Tiamats while still providing APA coverage, while the Cougars and Jaguars push forward for a strike. While it's technically a legal force (if I can find someone to play a 45,000 point game with), as I said earlier, it's more of a larger pool to draw units from for fluff purposes to make playable lists. So for a 5000 point force, I might grab the 8. Schutzentrupp as my core CAV Attack squad (2836TV) for massed heavy MRAC fire, backed up by the 14. Schutzenzug (1472TV) for a little more mobile attack, but they've subbed out a Lion II with a Manticore from the 16. Raketenzug (no TV change, since the Manticore and Lion II are the same cost). Finally, a Jaguar and Cougar from the 24. Geistertrupp (628TV) range deep into the enemy's territory, herding them towards us and giving our rockets something to aim at. At the moment, everything is stuff I have, except for the infantry (which is why they're all mechanised). Very little has paint on it, though. My dreams would include filling out another Raketenschwadron with Blitzs, Griffins, and Mastodons, getting some proper recon support with Panthers, Pumas, and Rudegerns (and more Cougars and Catamounts), making the Geistertrupp (Geisterschwadron?) live up to its name better with more Jaguars and Ocelots, and getting some proper air support in the form of Avengers and Typhoons. But let's get paint on some of this first.

CAV: Strike Ops III Kickstarter September 19th 2018

The eagle-eyed may have noticed the Mamba changed from being a Hard vehicle to a Soft in the recent update. This mini is partly responsible. As for the Wrongart hover, I wonder if there's another vehicle very similar to the Charger...?

Sound Off for CAV II KS!

It's a little difficult to say, since the different factions use different unit breakdowns. For the Ritterlich Republich, though, 4 CAVs make 1 Schutzentroop (an Adonese Troop or an Almirithil Squad) , 4 Schutzentroops (16 CAVs) make 1 Schwadron (an Adonese Company or an Almirithil Platoon), and 4 Schwadrons (64 CAVs) make 1 Abteilung (an Adonese Battalion or an Almirithil Company). With 52 CAVs, it's probably an under-strength abteilung, with 3 schwadrons plus a befehlstroop to command them. For larger sizes, 4 abteilungs (256 CAVs, or roughly 5 times as many CAVs as seen here) is a (Ritterlich) regiment, and 4 regiments (1024 units, or around 20 times as many CAVs as seen here) is a (Ritterlich) brigade, with example units seen in the core book. For NADO, 4 battalions (256) make a regiment, seen in the core book, and 3 regiments (768) make a division, also seen in the core book. For the Almirithil, 4 companies (256) make a battalion, 3 battalions (768) make a brigade, and 2-3 brigades (1536 - 2304) make a division, against with examples seen in the core book. Edit: and apparently I can't count. That's 4*11=44, not 4*13=54. So a little under 3 schwadrons, then.

Sound Off for CAV II KS!

With NADO being a sort of combined army of all the Adonese nations, I'm planning to paint my Adon forces (Suppression Force 75) a nice United Nations blue with white markings. My Ritterlich (the 1st Ophiuchi Brigade) will be tan/brown camo with dark blue highlights. My Almirithil I'm still exploring colours for, but they'll probably end up in either an orange/green by stealing the Adon paints, or a dark green with red markings in a bit of a soviet style. I'm keen to see what everyone is doing with theirs once they've got some pictures taken! Being in Australia, I'm going to have to wait a little longer for my shipment to arrive than the rest of you.
