Moandain was tired of adding the usual elf, dwarf, or human soul into his ranks. He wanted something fresh and different. The frail skeletons of humans served their purpose but he wanted to add the bones of some more awe inspiring frames into his host of undead, not to mention feed off their essence in the process. He heard there were more than a few different possible fits in the wintery forests to the north. Perfect... the chill will help preserve the bodies during transport.
With a slight flick of his wrist, a wall of hollow eye sockets seemed almost to blink as if coming out of slumber. The collection of bones lining the walls of his throne chamber started to click and clack, stepping forward, and falling into line. Thru a raspy whisper of empty breath, "Come to me, yearlings.." and within seconds from the cold stone of earthly floor rose two shadowy spirits, as if they had been waiting just underneath there eager to hear from their master. "Today, you will get the chance to prove your worth to me."

I would eventually run into a pack of Koborlas in the forest, led by Aislinn, the Shadow Tracker.
The battle would be quick and fierce. As the Koborlas no doubt heard the noisy clanks of the boney soldiers ceaselessly marching thru the trees, they prepared their ambush from the ridge. With the aid of an Incite spell, their front line melee group raced in full speed, shattering the frail bones of skeleton warriors in their wake. After the first turn, 8 skeletons were shattered without a single scratch to the canines.
Something in the air seemed off. No matter, Moandain would not let it stop him from gaining his prize. He watched as his soldiers were splintered in front of him, admiring the skill and strength of his prey. They would indeed make fine new soldiers for him when this was finished.
Surveying the field before him, he noticed that only half of the the beasts had charged in, while the rest stood back. The enemy had 4 massive soldiers wielding ballista sized crossbows. Also, amongst the rear group were two casters, he could see working their magics to boost and assist the front wave. "Bring them to me," he rhasped to his undead host.
My second line surged past my first line to meet the soldiers allowing my front line to try and charge across the field. Railors cast fear spells and that helped my skellies take out a couple of Feral Hunters. Of course I lost most of that troop to do it. But, really I focused on sending droves of skeletons across the board at his support team, knowing that probably only half would make it there. I figured I had the huge initiative card difference in my favor(7:2) so I decided that I didnt have to worry as much about the front wave of wolves cause I also figured that Moandain's magic could handle the front crew. Unfortunately, I forgot to figure in my dice into this equation.
I did get the init draw. I sent my familiar across to a great spot and shot a lightning bolt down the line of Aislinn and two frostfang hunters. All I needed were 2s and 3s. I rolled 1,2,1. So i only managed to get a single soldier for 2 points, not enough to kill it. The Koborlas calmly cast a cure2 from Corme in the back, and tossed another Incite spell to have the front line leap over my wall of skeletons and right into Moandain's lap. Luckily, Incite limits them to 1 swing each. Moandain took 2 points of damage that turn.
His ballistas scored 3 hits, but 2 made tough/0 rolls.
"You have shown me your value... worthless.."
Between both Railor's, during the game, they failed 3 Necromatic Surges trying to heal Moandain. They will be eaten by Moandain later. Aysa pulled off a successful Ice Blast against Aislinn and one of the soldiers that was in b2b with Moandain, killing the soldier. Of course, later on we would realize that soldier was immune to the Ice Tomb, so not sure how that would have affected the final outcome of the game. But, for the moment with Aislinn stunned, I literally had like 6 skellies whif and miss.
The Koborlas middle wave killed another 5-10 skellies, but amazingly (I used the Dark Crypt Legion doctrine) I made like 3 tough rolls. So, I kinda kept those wolvies busy for a while longer.
As figured I lost another 3 soldiers to flying tree logs from his shooters. The laws of attrition were gonna catch up to me faster than I had planned. One tough up.
Turn 4 saw me lose another 10 skeletons, but whoa.. another 2 successful tough/0 rolls.
Aislinn and the Frostfang warrior get 3 more hits on Moandain, taking him to his last track, Moandain gets Aislinn to his last track in defense, but again Corme calmly heals Aislinn afterwards.
Aysa, who had been hiding in the corner to force the enemy to waste the time to come all the way over there to her, was casting spells thru her familiar and finally gets a necromatic surge to work on Moandain, who does regenerate and separated himself from those in btb with him and but his magic again fails him and he does not get a life drain on Aislinn.
Osric who had kinda been hiding behind skellies up to now decides to take his head out and participate. He was able to kill and suck blood from a couple of feral hunters. One grave rot had died early, but the other had to come back and help Moandain out. With the assistance of my totem, he as able to kill the frostfang warrior that Moandain had just separated from. That is where thigns finally started looking ok for me.
Turn 5, I still had a 7:2 card favor. But managed to pull his card and he killed another 8-9 skellies. Amazing, another 2-3 successful tough/0 rolls. That was like 10-11 tough/0 rolls made for the game. That was the difference in the game. My skellies survived to be able to then charge his ballista shooters and casters and cleave them up. He had a Feral hunter that took Moandain back down to his last track. But, Moandain was able to separate and finally get off a successful life drain to finish off that feral hunter and heal himself in the process.
So, end of game, I had like 7-8 skellies, Osric, Moandain, 1 Railor, and Aysa. Which sounds like a lot, and I guess it was, but when you consider all 7-8 of those skellies were ones that had survived tough/0 rolls, it shows that it could have been way different. So, had they not, then Moandain, Osric and Aysa would have had to travel across the board into the teeth of those ballistas to try and get the win. It would have been a very different game.
"You will suffer for interfering with my magic..." After all, it has to be Railor's fault that Moandain's magic was so off.
They traveled back to his cold dark throne room... with lots of new soldiers in their ranks.

my opinion is, people buy what they think looks good no matter if it is truly in scale or not. For the most part this is a fantasy based genre of models. I think really only the historical miniature based society is more of a stickler for the precise sizing.
Werner's dwarves are huge compared to Tre Manor's but if I like them I buy them. I have some of both of theirs.

dont know what your old leather recipe looked like but your new leather recipe is very nice worn leather.

WW and WB, I am seriously thinking that we might have to test out the viability of playing via skype and webcams.
As always, great read.
Tough rolls are both so much fun and also so frustrating for sure. One of my favorite things in the game.

Here is another off the wall idea. I can think of several lists that would obliterate this one, but at the same time for a regular gaming night when your opponrnt thinks you are gonna bring jelly donuts, you can bring a little mustard instead.
Nefsokar - 998 points
Troop 1
Neb'nesew Ne'pet - Familiar
Netikerti - Familiar
Reborn
Khamsin Dervish x 4
Khamsin Lancer x 2
Troop 2
Tariq
Fatima - Staff of Sokar, Familiar
Ammat Devourer x 2
Anubis Guard x 2
Troop 3
Khathan - Magic Ranged Weapon
Troop 4
Sokar's Avatar
----------------------------------
4 troops +2 spies
20 models (44 DTs)
The list is really built around the Avatar, but Kathan would be good for head hunting from the edges.
Overall the concept is, first turn Neti summons some minions to add more fodder to the table. Fati can either toss a divine vigor or two on the avatar or a vigor on the avatar and might on the reborn while the troops hold the line. Then second turn (or whenever the enemy is in the right place) send the avatar into the fray, rampaging away.. Then use Netikerti to cast exploding sacrifice on the Avatar. Rushing in the troops afterwards to pick off the wounded. Then next activation have Fatima cast resurrection, use the staff free casting of lay on hands, and Tariq also cast cure 1 to have the avatar back up a couple of points good to go for another round.
Meanwhile Nebby uses lots of lightning on anything that comes to try and stop this process, while Kathan is keeping on the edges, focus and fire on whatever she can.
Two horsies to be a little speed to go after any enemy archers or casters to keep them from foiling this plan too early.
-
Hey, no... you do it as you want, I was just asking... Curious as to how many different styles there would be. Knowing you I would guess that you will probably get a certain number of horsies and stay there. But, on the idea that the number could grow at some point, just curious how that would affect the colors.
-
You need to move closer to me, so I can toss some of my minis in your "to paint" pile.
-
So, how many "houses" will there be then?
-
Very nice indeed. I hope to roll some dice against her at some point in the not too distant future...

Well, here is a variant of a list I made a while back for the Mercs, using the Change of Heart Doctrine that I have only played once, but I remember it being a lot of fun to play.
Mercs - 1000 points
Troop 1
Boris Mingla - Assassin's Blade
Sokar's Prophets x 3 (from Nefsokar)
Minotaur x 3
Okuran
Troop 2
Haranobu - Assassin's Blade
Sokar's Prophets x 2 (from Nefsokar)
Minotaur x 3
Okuran x 2
Troop 3
Raseri, Raging Barbarian - Assassin's Blade
--------------------------------------
3 troops +2 tacticians +1 spy
17 models (47 DTs)
The overall concept is Prophets can bless and/or Ironskin models left and right then send them into battle. If they were your target, then the now DR2 Minotaurs can rush attack cleave stuff left and right. And the main three use their assassin blades to the chew up the rest.
-
So, Warwick got me thinking about lists with assassins in them. I have had a lot of success lately with Zalash, the Darkreach Assassin. But, he is an elite, meaning that he can be used in a troop full of protecting soldiers. I wanted to have some fun and design a list or two around the solo assassins... Those that have to stand by their own whit and toughness to survive on the battlefield.
So, this is challenge to see if you can come up with a fun and also competitive 1000 pt build that is built around a solo assassin.
Here are my first two lists... Built around The Dwarf known as Snorri.
Dwarves - 1000 points

Starting with the new version of Warlord (Warlord 2nd Edition), Reaper no longer packages data cards with the minis. All data cards that came with minis are no longer valid (or at least not valid with the 2nd edition). All valid cards will be found in the book, as well as, on Reapergames.com
Reapergames.com even has a very cool army creator page where you can build your army and it will output the exact data cards, equipment, and appropriate spells for your build.
-
The data cards in them do not apply, but the fluff does.

Thumbs up...

Since we are talking Dwarves, and I tossed out my favorite 5, got me wanting to make a Warlord list involving the fab 5. I am sure there are lots of good combinations, but I came up with 2 that I liked.. So, here they are...

My favorite 5 are:
Logrim
Gargram
Fulumbar
Snorri
And the mounted Thorvald
But agreed that Bragg definitely has the best name of all of them...
-
Again, just verifying.... to me the biggest part of the Assasin SA is not the part about the auto fail of tough rolls, but rather that when you destroy a model, they do not get to take defensive swings against you. Obviously, if you are the one on the defensive then it doesnt come into play.
But, yes the reven enrage is such a fun doctrine to play with. In the original Warlord, Reven were always the bottom feeders, no one wanted to play them. But, in the second edition, they are one of my staple factions that I play in my regular rotation.
-
Glad to see you finally coming around to using your casters.. I remember how anti-magic you used to be.. And magic, specifically AOE spells, in tight quarters can be lots of fun fore sure... well if you are the one casting them anyway.

A fun list that I tinkered with last night...
Razig - 995 points
Troop 1
Razig - Bottle of Rum
Salty Sabre x 5
Skeletal Chain Ganger x 5
Troop 2
Grim Pete
Salty Sabre x 2
Skeletal Chain Ganger x 2
Troop 3

Grim Pete
Salty Sabre x 2
Skeletal Chain Ganger x 2

Totem of Battle

4 troops + 1 spy
26 models (58 DTs)

This list is about the double frustration of the nuaseated curses of the
Salty Sabres paired up with the disabling madness of the chain gang. Toss
in Razig's Warlord ability to bring back models from the dead and its sure
to bring some grumbles from any opponent.

I think he built those halls that wide on purpose to have the giants use swing thru on one base side smashing everything as they walked along. But, yes, what I am hearing is that you healed your elementals, while he had no healing for his giants. That to me sounds like the difference in the game. Cause even though the giant would need 2 rounds to kill the elementals, they should have little trouble doing that considering the MAV to DV difference.
-
True, the free spirits don't look like much in terms of their stats, but just having them out there to lend support and or keep an init card in the deck or whatnot has been large for me in the past.
-
Warwick, dont forget the other benefit of killing something via the assassin SA... that is, the killed model cannot take defensive swings against the assassin. That has been huge for me more than a few times.
WB, I like your list. Definitely hurts tho when one of your big hitters goes down early before you get the chance to heal it. I would say, most of the time that shouldnt happen. But, sounds like you gave a good game for being down that much early. Wonder how it would have gone had GB#2 been able to survive that first wave.
A recruiting trip...

To be honest, I cannot remember if it was 5 turns or 6. But, it was right there. Definitely did not go 7. When we called it he only had a single ballista shooter left. At the beginning of that turn he still had a bunch of stuff. So, no we didnt count points up, although I guess I could figure it out easy enough. IT would look like a landslide cause my three expensive models were all still alive, but it really wasnt.
In fact when Moandain with his CP9 failed his third spell in a row I was near about to forfeit and call the game after turn 3. But, as bad as my magic was failing me, that is how awesome my tough/0 rolls kept bailing me out. to make almost 30% of my 39 tough/0 rolls is just unheard of.
