I think you should have three catergories. Something like:
>Beginner
>Intermediate
>Expert
I mean someone who just started may want to participate, however you all know that he/she would have no chance against some of the stuff I've seen on here. It might help get them started (IE: Winning paints or models or whatever) as well as motivate them.
--Meady
And what would you use as the determniing factors to say which is which. Would you do it by asking the timeframe the submitter has been painting? Would you use certain criteria in the paintjob?
I know there wil be some, like Jester and such that wil automatically go into the expert pile, those are easy. But, you still need to have some kind of differential for separation that you can justify putting one person into the begiiner pile and someone else into the intermediate pile.
Or would you let the submitter request a certain pile?

Quick question....
When I logged in this morning and went to RANK, I saw a couple of people listed with like 2 points each or something like that.
I just went a few minutes ago and now when I click on RANK, the area is blank...
Just wondering about that....

*heh* That'd be a LOT of pictures if we went to the general public with it! I had the idea that it was a contest a la the previous Reaperboards contests run on the Reaper site.
I mean, heck... the more the merrier, and what better way to advertise! But with just the Reaperboards and online community they already had quite a lot of entries, and we wouldn't want to overstrain whichever website hosts photos.
P.S. Bleujenna, I need to talk to you! I'll send you a PM! Watch your messages!
Jess
As long as the pics sent in are kept within a reasonable size, it would be no problem. I gots plenty of space and bandwidth.
Like I said, its more of trying to work out the issues I mentioned above...

I am not a BL, but if we, as a group, can come up with the categories and criteria, I would more than happy to host it and run the thing.
Obviously, if this would be a painting contest to commemorate the release of the new master paints, I would assume that only those paints could be used. So, the first matter to settle is how to enforce that, prove it, etc...
Second item, prizes. I have run a few contests in the past, and I have always run it in terms of the number of entrants. That is the more people entering, the bigger the prize. We can work out the exacts later, but just know that it would run something like that.
Next, categories: it would get too complicated to have a fantasy and sci fi, and expert and novice in each. Much less the idea of stock verses modified, mini on base verses diaramma type. But, at the same time I agree that it would be unfair to try to lop everyone in the same pot too.
So, I am looking for suggestions from the people....

To me, although that is a valid question, the real issue is not how metal prices affect the paper part of the gaming company. If they want to come out with new fluff, new text, and new rules to match the RAGE system that will help the game going into the future, well then thats all well and good, and probably commendable.
My problem and questions has nothing to do with that.
MY problem has to do with what seems to have been a call for complete stoppage in the production of new CAV minis. Just cause the tin is more expensive doesnt mean that we wouldn't be buying it.
They can take their time in getting the new rules to us to make sure that it is just right before releasing. But, since the artists doing the CAV minis are not the same artists doing thefantasy minis, producing CAV minis should not take away from Warlord's growth. And we aren't expecting the dozen or two dozen new minis per month that the fantasy lines seem to be enjoying. We would be happy with 1 or 2 new ones per month. Personally, I don't think that is too much to ask for.

Great stuff. But, I think you need to post the others here as well. Need to get as much CAV stuff on here as possible.

DChihorn: We just have a different definition of what tiny is, I suppose. I'll see if there's anything I can do to alleviate your eyestrain. What is your monitor resolution, anyway (cause that map is designed to be an adequate size for the average resolution of the majority of Reaper visitors).
Like I said, I wasn't trying to flame, just trying to give honest feedback on it. Frankly, I am surprised that I am the only one saying something. Maybe it is just me. I guess the better suggestion would be to start a poll thread to see if the map is a good size for visitors or not.
My opinion (and its just that, my one person opinion) is that the picture should be along the lines of even 800x800 or 900x900. That way we can actually read the writing, you might be able to include the names of the sections in there without it looking overstuffed, and you might also be able to use the map more than just have it as a picture to look at.
Related suggestions would be:
1. I like how you included the faction breakdown. Maybe you could make it to where you could click on a region in the map and it would give the breakdown for that particular region, not just the whole map.
2. Later as people have submitted reports and such, a larger map might allow you to include small graphical representations of how many battles have taken place in a region and between which factions.
3. Again, later as people have submitted reports and such, a larger map might allow players to actually alter the look of the map a little. I am talking things like building armies, cities, fortresses, etc...
examples:
3a. The map currently has the region I am in as blank, nothing in it. Well, over time and such as someone has built up and/or had success, that could/should change...
3b. In one of the western regions there is a Merc town there, Port something, again I cant read it. Well, what happens later if it turns out that 15 people in that geographic area decide to play Overlords and dominate the area? Will the map change to show that as an Overlord Port? Will a second town, city, castle, dwelling, whatever, be representing of the Overlord influence in the region...
4. Along the idea of suggestion #1, maybe make it to where if instead of clicking on a particular region of the map, maybe I click on "show me the Dwarves" type of link and each region might show just how much dwarf it contains...
5. Associating the faction with the symbol. Suggestion that you always put both the faction and the faction symbol up together. People that are not as familiar with the game might be able to discern that the leaf belongs to the Elves, but it would be hard pressed to determine the rest of them simply by looking.
Oh, and my monitor at work is a little 12 inch laptop screen set at 1024x768. While my screen at home is a 20 inch set at (guessing) 1800x1600 or whatever resolution is around that.

In that case, Kit, I guess you need to log in as a me, cause my Balance of Power map is only 600x604. Its barely larger than the reply window that I am writing in right now... Definitely no scrolling needed
Can't long in as you. Encryption being what it is and all.
The map is 600x604 by design.
kit
That was my point. You had said that the big map makes me scroll. And my response is, "No, the big map makes me lean in a squint my eyes to try and see anything because it is so small. It does not come close to filling my screen"
Not trying to bash or flame or anything. Just giving honest feedback. That map is just plain tiny. And because it is tiny, and the words are written in a fancy font, you cant read hardly any of it.

Sorry, only see the map related to balance of power and that is tiny. Where do I find a link to the bigger map?
Balance of Power is the large map.
Member Profile has small map.

what does that little checkbox for, related to our profile being active... I would think that its kinda a "duh" type of thing...
My only problem with the thing is that the map is tiny. Couldn't yall have made it a little bigger? Or were you catering to the 640x480 crowd?
If for some reason you wish to take your listing out of the ranking ladder, you may do that by deactivating your profile.
Which map are you referring to? The big one already makes you scroll on 1024x768. How much bigger were you expecting it? The big map isn't getting any bigger, by the way. The small map in the member profile will become more useful, however.

I am Elf in openness of Khazareen Province which seems like a contradiction for us woodland folk.

This site has a great tutorial for doing large scale flocking with sand and grit.

One last question....
When you say Flow Improver, you are not talking about thinner, right?
Cause I have ben to all the hobby shops around here and looked in their airbrush cases and they have things of thinner all in there, but I have not seen any "flow improver".
Just bumping... cause you missed my last question (although Cade's question was very good too)

Thanks for the info.
Just verifying, you primer with regular paints. You don't use an actual primer?
Do you soak your minis in anything before priming?
-
Please repeat your black primer formula for air brushes (and also the alternate formula that you told me). I remember your primary choice being one that I don't think I can find around here (and don't want to wait for in terms of online buying). But, I do remember you had an alternate primer that I probably could find around here.
Mind sharing that info again? And the flow mixture ratios again related to Vallejo (or the new master paints).
Thanks sir.

Another prayer is packaged and delivered for good measure.

A dapple is basically the effect of the spots in fur.
This thread is based on my request to Lady for more information about how she did the dappling for horses (as she had claimed to know a little on the subject of horses when Jester posted up a couple).
She will have to tell you the name of the breed of horse that you see more of this effect on, all I know is that it is a beautiful grey horse with darkening at the ankles, but on the hind quarters area, there is usually some dappling that goes on that gives the horse much character.
But you could also have dappling for like a cheetah, leopard, or other animal with spotting. Like described above the whole point is to make it look like fur blended in not to make it look like polka dots.

Looks pretty good. Thanks for second picture, not cause its a close up but because her clothes blended too much into that wall in the first picture.
Nice color selections.
Only issue I see is it looks like she got her hand stuck in the door, and now all of her fingers are wrapped in guass or something.

Must say I have taken plenty of CS related exams as it was one of my majors. But, can't say that I ever did an oral exam. Course I did graduate almost a decade ago now so times could easily have changed.
Don't know that I would have graduated had my exams been oral.
Congrats.

Lady Tam,
As it was I that had asked about it, just wanted to say thank you for obviously taking a lot of time and trouble to go find the answer for me.
Much appreciated.

so are you saying the base + options for the Merlin is different in CAV-RC than it is say in the book? I don't have the book to find out.
A painting contest

ok, so time spent painting is out..
Sorry Jester, you would definitely fall under the expert category here. Maybe in the extreme painters world you might not rank, but here on this board with these people, you are in the same regards as the Grand Pubah...
Ok, so maybe then the best thing to do would be to have a panel of a couple or few people that did not participate (thank you for volunteering Jester
) that could place the entrants into the categories, trying to be as unbiased as possible.
I think that the people around here are fairly knowledgeable of how they stack up, and would be comfortable with someone like Jester and a few others to place their entry to whichever pile it should be judged against.
What say ye?
