Feathered wings for a fire dragon? Size comparison pictures?
marmalade replied to marmalade's topic in General Fantasy
Thank you so much! That'll work perfectly :D -
Hello! Bit of an odd question, but does anyone know of any feathered wings that would be of the correct scale for this fire dragon here? Or reference photos if you have any of these other minis? I'm looking at this giant eagle, this gryphon or this one, the peryton, the pegasus, or this avatar, and have no earthly idea how big any of them are compared to the dragon, but I'm betting they're too small. If those Reaper minis don't work, any idea of minis outside of Reaper ones that are the right size? Thanks much!

I've got the earth and water elementals from that, but this guy isn't in there that I can see. -

Yeah, maybe it only came in some, or got mixed up in the one the guy on that blog had? -

Got a bit of a lead! This webpage here says that he was a bonus figure that came in a Grenadier "Fantasy Fiends" box set, so maybe he doesn't even have a specific name/purpose? -

If skeletal baby seals look horrifying and have horns (maybe??) it could be! And I dug through Grenadier catalogues from like 82-87, but didn't see this guy in any of them. Did find another couple of my minis though, so it was somewhat helpful. -

I've got a load of old Ral Partha/Grenadier/etc metal miniatures, and I've had decent luck figuring out what most of them are, except for this guy. I have no idea what he is, and I can't find him in any old catalogues. Anyone recognize him? Any idea if I should try posting this on the Sci-Fi forum side as well? I could see him as either a demon of some kind or an alien. He's one of my favorites just because of how out there he is lol. -
Yeah, some of the things GW does makes me shake my head, but man. Literally 100% of every single interaction I've had with the employees and other players at my local store have been incredibly positive, even with me being a completely clueless noob. And thank you! He was a ton of fun to paint, I definitely want to do more detailed stuff like this again. Hahaha, thanks! Just be glad the floor is out of focus, otherwise you'd see all kinds of cat hair tumbleweeds :P

There was a mini painting contest/showcase at my local Games Workshop store for the 30th anniversary, so I decided to finally get around to painting one of my models for it! This guy is the first space marine I've painted :D

Did a couple glazes today, got the transitions between the shades evened out some and darkened up the darks a bit more! Also went back in and cleaned up the dark lines some. For the cockpit I'm testing out a glossy varnish! I'm not quite 100% on how it looks though, so if anyone has any tips on painting curved glass like that I'd be much appreciative :D

With a couple washes and layers, my little mech is looking much better! I really love how the orange turned out! It not having that great of a coverage really helped with thinning it down enough to make smooth transitions, the blue I might work on a little more. Next up is the glass and the weapons, and finishing up the white portions!

Got tired of painting people, so why not paint some mechs! I tried to go for a really clean separation between the armor plates, I need to go back and darken the lines around the feet I think. I plan on bringing the orange up super bright, almost to a yellow. That part might be a bit tricky though, as I don't actually have any orange paints and have just been mixing red and yellow XD. We'll see how it turns out. I'll also be finding some fun symbols or ID numbers to put on the white spots on the back and the side of the cockpit. I don't have any idea what color I'll paint the cockpit glass yet, maybe yellow or grey.

An eye beast and some casual mad-sciencing

Had a spare couple of hours so I played around with some attempts at iridescence today! I got some plastic minis for cheap off of ebay to use for practice, and there was a tengu guy in there that worked perfectly for this! Decided to go with a magpie-kinda theme, and slapped some quick paints on him! I'd be more neat and try to keep some black between the feathers on another mini, but I didn't want to take too much time here in case it didn't end up working out. I primed him, basecoated his wings dark grey, and then did a coat of Ultramarine Blue on top of that where I wanted the iridescence. While that was wet, I blended in some Marine Teal from the feather tips to about 50% up, and then a little bit of Surf Aqua in a very thin line just to one side of the feather ribs on a few of the big wing feathers. I did a quick wash of the base wing color on top of that, and I might go over everything with that again because the next layers I put up kinda hid that a bit. I went over the places where the light would hit with more Marine Teal to brighten things up again. Next, I took a mixture of ~50/50 Military Green and Jade Green, and put little bits of that on the very end of the feathers, then some Ultramarine Blue on the very base of the feathers. To get it a bit more sparkly and bring in some different tones for contrast I thinned down some Old Bronze and dabbed that kinda randomly around here and there. I think the wings ended up looking somewhat convincingly iridescent! From a distance you can definitely tell that they aren't flat black and aren't just blue, and everything blended well enough that it doesn't look like a bunch of differently colored feathers and isn't overwhelmingly sparkly! Other than the one metallic paint I used everything is just your standard paint. -
I'll have to find another backdrop, the only other one I had was black and that was even worse D:
