  1. So, I am finally finished with school, for now, and i have some time to paint.

I want to paint some quarters, as per a post I saw previously on this forum. This leads me to two questions.

I have heard of Testor's DullCote being used as a primer. Can the same be done with gloss sealers? I do not plan on painting the background of the coin, so I figure if I can prime with gloss sealer, it may make the background shine a bit more.

The other option I am thinking, is shining up the background metal. I read an article some years ago about buffing the metal up, rather than using metallics or NMM techniques. However, I could not find this article again. Does anyone know the article I am talking about? Does anyone have any real experience with it?

  2. If the mini is too small, buy some giants and/or ogres to paint. For me, the tiny minis aren't 'fun', nor do I have the skill. So I stick to the bigger models.

Tiny minis come with skill and practice, so if your skill is not quite there yet, don't rush it.

  3. Another thing that could be in play is exclusivity agreements. This may no hold in the hobby world, but it does other places. For instance, Coke or Pepsi will sell its products to a store or restaurant on the condition that they don't carry the competitor. The possible benefit to the store is they may get a discount on their paints/minis.

GW is a big enough company, I could see them doing that, boxing out the competitors they fear most, and allowing those that they aren't concerned with. Well, at least, that is what I would do.

  4. I like the fact that Whedon managed to get the movie made and tie up the loose ends. It's more than the Jericho fans got. But I dunno if they could ever bring back the magic, even if Fillion did get the rights.

Yea, no kidding. I feel sorry for the people behind Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles. <spoiler>I mean, they end their series with the main character not even existing anymore! Too bad, I think they were setting themselves up for a decent 3rd season.</spoiler>

Another bad one, My Name Is Earl. Canceled right in the middle of a two part season cliff hanger.

Stargate Universe will probably end up closing unsatisfactory as well. Although, Syfy is pretty good about making crappy made-for-TV movies to tie things up. At least that's something.

I think Networks should give serial programs half a seasons heads up to allow them to *try* to tie up some loose ends.

What would kill a future TV series for me would be the absence of Wash. If they tried to replace the character, he'd always just be "the guy filling Wash's spot", but if they didn't try and fill his spot, there's nobody left to do the comic relief.

I don't know, I got the feeling at the end of the movie that River was going to become the pilot. Watching it the second time, I did not get that feeling, but still.

Although, half the fun of that show was her, and how crazy she was. She had some of the best lines. A sane River would kinda such, I think.

  5. Did you seal it afterwards?

I'd like to do one of the presidential gold dollar coins, but would want to let the gold show through as much as possible. Do you think not priming, or selective priming, would work?

  6. did you find an easy way to do the lettering, or did you just tough it out with a steady hand?

I was able to do a trick with my heat gun. I heated up the coin so it was warm to the touch. I then used really thinned paint and a sharp tipped brush to paint on the coin letters. I had to do a few coats on the letters but it was able to hold the letters in tacked.

Didn't that mess with the already laid down paint? Or did you do the letters first?

  7. One more time on Merisiel. This is not a Reaper Miniature, it is a Pathfinder Miniature that was sculpted by Crocodile Games when they held the license. When the license was shifted to Reaper all the existing work that was done by Crocodile Games went with to Reaper as well. That is a Chris Fitzpatrick sculpt and he is one of the best in the business, pose not withstanding.

I assume that is directed, at least in part, towards me. My comment was not regarding the actual designer/manufacturer, but the oddity of using such an intricate and detailed miniature up in the same paragraph in which criticism for having miniatures that lack detail is found.

  8. The quality of Reaper miniatures sculpts is going down the toilet. I have a copy of EVERY issue of Casketworks ever printed and I witnessed REAPER rise from mediocre to THE BEST in the MARKET for its quality of sculpts. Now, with a few exceptions, the minis are becoming less detailed and more generic. Even the poses are awkward or less dynamic, some (like the Merisiel mini, doing her King Tut dance) are outright ridiculous.

I do not share your point of view. From what I see at the store, Reaper is on par with any other mini creator. There are some exceptions, such as generic monster packs, but for the rest, the level of detail is about what I would expect for the figure in question. To use hyperbole, I do not expect to be able to see individual cloth fibers on mini's jackets, or each individual rivet in a piece of armor.

I do find it odd, though, that you can blast Reaper for falling detail standards, yet you hold up the Merisiel mini as an example, when that is one of the most detailed and involved mini's I have ever seen, Reaper or otherwise.

The pose is quite ridiculous though.

  9. Yea, I also use Testors glue. I can't testify that it's the strongest, I don't know for sure. But I do like how it more or less melts the plastic together, rather than just glues them. I would be inclined to say that creates a stronger bond. Especially when compared to sheering a super glue bond.

  10. I’m 5’ 4 1/2” and I only weigh 99 lbs. This is normal for my family, but I get sick a LOT and I think it may be tied to both pregnancy losses. I plan to start working out and eating better after I recover from my surgery. I need exercises that are easy on the joints because I have bad knees and sciatica. I don’t have access to a pool either. Does anyone know of any good diet and workout plans I can use? I’ve searched everywhere for a good one but they’re all weight-loss programs. OH, and they need to be cheap to, I do have access to a gym. Thanks guys.

Yea, asking for medical advice on an internet message board, not a good idea.

Talk to your Doctor, and get referred to a nutritionist. Anyone else that offers advice is just a pretender.

  11. How sad is it that I didn't even notice the cat, but was instead trying to ID the dalek figures.

Yea, where did you get those, or how did you make them? I know someone that would be a painting addict if she could paint decent Dr. Who miniatures.

  12. Of course. The year you were born plus your age is always going to correlate with the year you're in. Next year it will be "_12".

If you were born in 2000 or later though, you only get a total of 11.

I bet you go to magic shows and tell everyone how the trick was done too.
