  1. ok, i wimped out half way. emailed the professor and she said it would be only a few points off if it were a day late. Judging by the other papers i've written for this class, that means I'll probably still get an A or a high B. Such is life. Now, it is time to go home to bed.

This makes me feel like an old man. A year ago I would have pulled the all nighter with no hesitation.

  2. Well, I have a paper due tomorrow at 2pm. Somehow I had gotten it in my head that this paper only needed to be 4 or 5 pages long, which is no biggy. That would take most of tonight, but be thoroughly doable. So, with this length in mind, I've put this paper off until the last minute and focused on the other end of semester stuff.

I checked the syllabus after dinner, turns out this is a 12 to 15 page paper. YIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So wish me luck, I have to generate 12 pages of the symbolism used to portray the virgin mary in medieval paintings, and I have to do it tonight.

What am I doing here? I got work to do...

    Bummer.

  3. whew, I was starting to worry that I wouldn't get a reply.

It seems like the community has slowed down an awful lot. I guess my next question is what does the future hold for warlord? While I am certainly still going to show my friends the game, I will feel bad if I drag them into a game that is dead in almost every way. How many people are still playing?

  4. I've never had that much trouble stripping. I just throw my metal ones in some pinesol, and then toothbrush them a few days later. This of course leaves stuff in the cracks, so i just throw it back in the pine sol. It takes maybe 3 or 4 minutes every time they pop out of the cleaner. 5 bucks for a mini is totally worth the cumulative 20 minutes of my time it takes to strip the suckers. The last time I pull em out, i just take some needle thin tweesers and grab any paint thats left in the cracks. Not hard at all.

  5. A few of my 40k partners have expressed interest in warhammer fantasy. This move away from sci fi has sparked a hope in me. Maybe they can be switched to warlord? At the very least I can get a little use out of the lizards while I make them try it out.

So its been a while, and I have fallen out of the loop. What am I gonna need to make some warlord happen? I have tons of lizards, and I'm sure I can put together enough orcs from various companies to make a suitable warband. But what sort of lists should I go with? What can I do to make their mouths drop at the sheer awesomeness of Warlord? The window of opportunity is small, but I may be able to make some recruits.

    I need help.

  6. My group stopped playing it around the time they switched to the data cards where every model had about a million tracks. At the moment I have no one to play with, but I am still interested to see what has changed.

Oh, now THAT hurts! You have been invited to every game that I have run (well all of them with more than an hour's notice). And I know the way to G'ville, but not your free time to game. Has it been soooo long since the days of our Reptus/Elf alliance clearing board after board of our foes? <snif>

Glad to hear that you have enough time to rejoin.

    Cheers,

    Brian

fair enough, maybe it would have been better to say that ALOT of our group stopped playing about the time they switched cards, and then I upped and made matters worse by going off to school.

Has warlord activity picked back up? The last I spoke to everyone there was much grumbling about constant rules changes and people seemed to be playing other stuff.

And it hasn't been that long since the elder races cleansed the board of interlopers, we still remember the old alliances.

I might be back in raleigh for a few days in a week or two, perhaps i need to dust off the lizards?

  7. Howdy folks, I'm not sure how many of you folks remember me, but I'm back. I am starting to get back into minis again, and I haven't been to this website in over a year.

I guess I should reintroduce myself. I am junior in art school at East Carolina University. I've got 60 or 70 painted reptus as well as a fair chunk of other reaper figures. At the moment I am starting up a 40k army so that I can play with the locals, but I do miss warlord. My group stopped playing it around the time they switched to the data cards where every model had about a million tracks. At the moment I have no one to play with, but I am still interested to see what has changed.

As for other hobbies, I play xbox like its my job. I am an apostle of master chief, and I shall spread his word.

    and thats about it.

  8. So, a a year or two ago I was participating in a miniature exchange on this esteemed forum. This coincided with my dropping out of warlord as well as the reaper community. My mini never got mailed. Between my absence from this forum, and moving several times, I let it slip through the cracks. Today I found it (a bit worse for wear) in a box of miniatures stuff. I feel absolutely terrible.

The way I figure it I owe some people some miniatures as well as an apology.

I can't imagine how I must have frustrated those who were involved. Something like that can really sour a positive experience.

If I'm not mistaken the exchanges were run by cutebutpsycho. Is she still around? I'm not sure where to start when it comes to straightening this out, so I'll just ask. Who do I need to be mailing stuff to? The way I figure it I owe her a present as well as my original recipient and who ever painted to pick up my slack.

Folks, I am really quite embarrassed, I never meant to let you guys down.

  9. We have 3 stores within twenty minutes of my house and another opening. And I can tell you which does the most business and why. Discounts. The one that is farthest out of town in the shoddiest building with the least space still does the most business and stocks the most product. Here is how they do it. 20% discount if you buy online. That means it defrays the cost of shipping, or, if you elect to go pick it up in the store, its just a straight up discount. And they like it too. Everything they sell on line brings less profit, but it is a guarunteed sale, not a gamble that sits on the shelves. Sure they lose half of their 40% markup, but half of something is waaaay more than all of nothing. Also, when selling minis any store is in direct competition with the internet. Sure we all know the guys at the store. Sure we like that they have playing space. Man o man do we want them to stay in business. But many customers still go with the cheaper product because they can't afford to waste cash trying to keep a sinking business afloat, even if it is the nice thing to do

And since they do have the store, they still get those impulse buyers that want some shiney stuff right now. Also, when you need to order something, you order it from them at a discount rather than from some web site at a discount.

After the discounts the most important thing is presentation. A store should be clean, full of friendly people, and stocked floor to ceiling with miniatures. I should not spend 20 minutes peruseing half filled aisles and not find anything I am willing to buy. I am a gamer with a ten-spot in my pocket, put something shiney in my hand. I want to feel like I am at a proper store with a friendly knowledgable staff, not at a half empty used car lot (we have one gaming store still in business like that). I would much rather talk to the nice young lady behind the register at the discount store than some beardy guy at the understocked/overpriced store.

The least important thing is playing space. In the past 3 years we have had 5 stores in my area. The one with the most playing space died first. Next we lost the one with the third most space. The 2nd most space store is still here by virtue of its premium location (premium for a gamestore in a low rent building) but is always on the edge of failing. The two stores with the most stuff and fewest tables always have the most customers. Besides, if you watch any gamestore on a saturday you'll see that the folks sitting and playing often buy less then the guys who only come in for 5 minutes. It doesn't do you any good to have a game table if the gamers aren't paying their rent. If you want to have a gaming club where your buddies can hang out and game without buying things, thats one thing, but a store needs to be a store.

It is also important to be careful with how you allot any playing areas. I have seen a gamestore owner kick out middle aged men wih jobs and deep pockets to make room for 3 middle schoolers to play yu-gi-oh. Thats bad business. You can bet that those fellas don't like to make their $250 army purchases through him now. But hey, at least hes still getting $15 a week from the yu-gi-oh kids.

I'm sorry to go on so much, but I live a stone's throw from one of the best stores I've ever seen and one of the worst, and I hate to see people end up with stores like the worst.

On topic: As far as stocking for warlord, I would say stock the shiney things first, because that is what will catch people's eye and get them interested.

  10. Well, the reptus came out, looked real sexy, and now are serving as lizardskin suitcases for the undead.

I ended up using a force that worked pretty different from my normal style (my normal style is to have more minis on the table than a goblin horde).

    I used:

    Khonger

-Great Magical suit of protection uselessness

    Nai Khanon

    Pakpao

    -Great Armor of tinfoil

    - counterspell x 3

    - Iceshard

    - Ice-what-ever-they-call-the-improved-iceshard

    Warriors x 6

    clutchlings x 3

    Uru

    trolls x 3

    Uzskuluz the awesome

    -teleport

    -cure2 x 2

    -crimson embrace

    -searing pain

    -hold

Cthayha watcha ma callit the cheap sgt

    archers x 4

So this list has much fewer cards and models in it than normal for me. It was supposed to work like this: Everyone stands near pakpao, he counters all magic, we shoot things until they come to us, we eat rotten meat. Big mistake. All was going fine, the trolls had moved up and seized control of the valley between the two middle hills. Then 4 wraiths came in and dropped two trolls and didn't take a single wound in return. Do you ever roll six dice without getting a single 5? I sure did. Then the rest of the lizards got stuck in it and did ok. Except the wizard. He wiffed both spells he shot (the ice ones) and then died a horrible death because everyone whio had been protecting him was gone. The archers never managed to find a good solid position, so while they shot every turn, they didn't get to use much marksman, so they had a light impact. Then Uskuluz bit the dust after using only 1 spell (a cure to be specific). So at this point I have lost 2 clutchlings, 2 trolls, 2 warriors, and both magic users. Over on that flank Nai Khanon and 2 more warriors are the sole survivors. On the other side of things The Khonger and sir Dauron (i think thats his name) have killed one another (the khonger got him in an uber frenzied defensive strike on the same turn he went down). Azarphan and Uru pull pretty much the same stunt on the other side of the board.

So at this point on turn 3 I have lost 4 warriors, Khonger, magic users, 2 clutchlings, two trolls, and Uru. This whole time Moandain has been summoning away from the safety of a cottage in his spawning area. I have killed a fist wad of skeletons, Dauron, azarphan, and a pile of death riders.

By the end of the fight Nai Khannon (with the help of a few lucky arrows) and the bone horror have defensive striked eachother (seeing a pattern here? big guys killing each other off, it was pretty cool). and i am left with 9 lizards. So then Moandain rolls up with his 11 spectral blokes, pile of skeletons, and the night spectre. The best part? He still has all his artillery spells. And my counterspells died two turns ago. It wasn't pretty. He didn't even bother to blast my guys, he just dark energied Dauron and Azarphan back up. I killed maybe 800 or 900 points and lost my full 1498.

Only 4 models managed to truly carry their weight. Uru, a troll, the khonger, and Nai-Khannon

So what did I learn about my faction?

-I need to go back to my old ways. Don't worry about magic users, mo gruntz works better.

-Don't get carried away with buying spells just to try them out, uskuluz will die and lose all those spells before you can try them.

-The defensive strike FA works great, don't forget to use it.

-Archers aint all they used to be, 8 arrows no longer means 4 dead grunts, it means 2 slightly wounded guys. And moandain is gonna heal those guys anyway.

-The Reptus shield wall is no longer what it once was. Now insted of living longer thanks to an amazing DV, many grunts only need a 4 or 5 to hit them warriors. They can die alot.

-Warmaster owns. Its the difference between the enemy ganging up and getting 6 attacks to your 1 wack-back and them getting 6 attacks to your gajillion wack-backs

-Outridering trolls may be worth it, those extra cards are even more important.

-A big group of trolls is still way too cool to want to split them up.

-Don't buy the Khonger greater magical protection, he'll be sliced up before the enemy wizard ever gets a shot at him.

I also learned a bit about more about the game in its new form. I have only played a few games since the last big changes because my gaming group is only now starting to go back to it again. I think a few months without major errata did everyone some good. Where the game used to be about massing your bonuses to outdo the enemy's defensive strike, this is now just another game about jumping the other guy first. Attacking them is veeeeery important, becasue it means you start the fight with 9 attacks to his 3 instead of the other way around. In the past when most folks only had 1 it wasn't as big a deal. Now it is really hard to make it to the next turn of combat when the attacker is hitting 3 or 4 times as often as you.

Next time I'll drop back to 2 archers and lose the wizard. Uskuluz can still come because trolls are really cool, but she doesn't get so much magic. And I definitely need more activation cards.

I can't wait to give it another go.

  11. So, the lizards get to have a go at it with the necros this thanksgiving.

Any good ideas? My dear old Dad is useing a tuned and tested Crypt Legion force which stars moandain and the spectral minions. I would go with the dragon turtle, but moandain will eat that low MD for breakfast, so he is out.

I'm thinking a heavy compliment of archers might do well in plinking the wizard before he gets me too bad. Maybe some Melee bruisers and a wizard with dispel (or is it a cleric spell? I can't remember) would be of service.

I'm open to suggestions, I haven't gotten to play much with the new stuff so i don't know exactly how everything will combine.

  12. Well today my free time led to the end of a zelda game. "A link to the past" has been conquered. 56 lives total, none lost on final dungeon.

"Link's awakening" is almost done, and I've only died 13 times on hat one.

Now to finish off the new one and then get back to "majora's mask".

Did i mention I got a vehicular manslaughter on halo today? Yeah, too much video gameing.

  13. I spend too much time on video games. I am currently working on 4 different zeldas between sessions of smash bros, Halo, and sudden strike 2 (old but still awesome). I've been working on getting a 360 fixed back up so that I can stop bumming Halo time off my friend's consoles.

I beat somewhere around 20 games last school year. It's baaad.

Thank Goodness I never got into WoW, I'd still be under.

During the summer I seem to read alot more, but when I have all this work it seems to be work, eat, work, game, eat, work, game, sleep, repeat. By the end of the day I just don't have the brain power for a book. Mindless games on the other hand...

  14. The procedure isn't so bad. I went to germany to have it done for my 18th birthday. It looks real cool, but when folks touch them they are always weirded out by the weak line through the middle. The cartilage can't reform itself into the same network so it loses some of its strength. Some folks say i look crazy, but I don't think it is any weirder than gaugeing your ears or getting a tattoo. The best is how convincing my Link costume (main character from zelda) is when i go LARPing.

Just kidding, I could never have that done.
