  1. I think maybe commanders would be cool for one-off missions, but I don't know if I'd want them in a campaign. But I can definitely see them working narratively, like having a Space Marine librarian joining a Kill Team for psychic support against a Thousand Sons sorcerer, or a Chaos Lord joining a band of insurrections on a crucial mission that will allow him to subjugate an Imperial world, or a stony-faced commissar keeping careful watch over the penal legion troops placed under his command.
  2. News on the Kill Team front is the coming release of an expansion called 'Commanders' which will introduce rules for using HQ heroes. I feel like it's the sort of expansion that everyone involved in a game will have to be using; rocking up for a game with your Kill Team from the base game and having a Genestealer patriarch on the opponent's team seems like a recipe for a bad time... but we'll see how they decide to balance it I guess.
  3. I'm not super keen on Rogue Trader myself, not a huge fan of the baroque sci fi style of the RT crew and Nurgle seems a bit overdone for 40K lately. Still, nice to see new content coming out for the game and hopefully there's more in the pipeline.
  4. Honestly not sure if this is an auto correct.
  5. http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/crystal ball/sku-down/03587 He even comes with a crystal ball!
  6. My mother knew a guy, a customer I think, who was Wayne Kerr. On a less crude note, my grandfather's name was William Williams, because my great-grandparents wanted him to be called Billy and you had to put the full name on the birth certificate back then.
  7. Fatherhood. So far. Couple of days in I was wondering why I ever thought that this was something that I could do. Then he didn't sleep properly for most of the following year. But right now he's a really good kid. Hell pizza is great, especially their sides. Mmm lamb shanks...
  8. I once had an American tourist ask me if it was made with Kiwi bird.
  9. Like many Aussies and Kiwis I enjoy beetroot on a hamburger, which apparently is weird to people who aren't used to it.
  10. My boy looking through a Warhammer rulebook. "Skulls on the door!" Riiiiibs... *drool* Love me some good ribs.
  11. Ad Mech are very tempting, but I think I've got enough on my plate for Kill Teams right now. I've got a Chaos team picked out (mostly cultists), a Space Marine scout team (all metal), a tactical marine team made up of the Japanese Space Marine Heroes that just needs one more bolter marine, I've got enough Tyranid Warriors and Gaunts to make a team, there's Genestealer Cult of course, and I want to convert up an Ork team from the Deathskull klan out of bits that I've found. Oh, and I think I can cobble together a penal legion squad out of Schaffer's Last Chancers and some extra assorted guardsmen from various regiments. And yeah, I've only played one game so far. So... maybe Ad Mech in another couple of years.
  12. So I finally played a game today. It was good fun, my Genestealer Cult going up against Primaris Space Wolves. We decided to play on a 2'x2' battlefield rather than something closer in size to the boards that GW is selling, with a decent spread of obscuring and blocking terrain. We ended up playing the "lines of battle" mission (I believe it was called, the breakthrough open play mission at any rate) and it was relatively easy for me to win with a smaller board length, even despite my dubious tactical choices. Going back to lowlylowlycook's observations, I think that maximum enjoyment from the game is going to be dependent on getting the battlefield setup just right, both for the mission and for the factions involved. In that respect, I think it's going to lend itself best to narrative play, and I'm looking forward to experimenting with it and hopefully getting a campaign going.
  13. It's kind of coincidental that he's worried about getting into debt with a baby on the way, because that's why I cancelled my pledge in the first place.
  14. I assume there are more faction starters and Killzone sets in the works, but the previously-teased Rogue Trader game has been revealed to be actually a Kill Team expansion - if I had to guess I'd say it'll probably be a board game style box like Necromunda. Personal daydreaming: I'd like to see an expansion that includes some more elite Kill Teams. Things like Eldar Aspect Warriors, Ork nobz, Space Marine veterans of various flavours, Chaos chosen, whatever cool new stuff comes out for Genestealer Cult with their codex... maybe even some one-man Kill Teams for open play (Sly Marbo, I'm looking at you... he still hasn't had his official release yet). Absolute dream: rules for Schaffer's Last Chancers. They were the original Kill Team, after all.
  15. I haven't played yet, but I bought the book and I think I'd agree with your assessment just looking through it. The game itself seems well done and should be fun, and it's especially nice to see some more modern wargames ideas in a Warhammer game. But... some of the options for the factions are pretty disappointing. Chaos in particular - they have only two troop types, the Chaos Marines are limited to the options available in the plastic kit (so only the heavy bolter for a heavy weapon, for example) and they only get four tactics, one of which is Khorne only (also the only one that's Mark-specific). Then there's things like only being able to get a Space Marine combat specialist if you take a Primaris marine - why can the intercessors be combat specialists but not tactical marines? Anyway, I'm still going to have fun with the game. But I think it'll need a bit of house ruling to play the way I really want to, and there's plenty of room for expansion from GW.
  16. A lot of people buy GW products from the UK and get them shipped via a third party post service (because GW doesn't let stores ship outside of their region) and it works out significantly cheaper than retail and a bit cheaper than domestic discount retailers. I generally don't mind supporting NZ businesses instead. Funny thing is, other wargaming and miniatures manufacturers don't have the same crazy markup here... It's my only real bugbear with the current state of GW though, and it's not enough to dampen my enthusiasm for Kill Team, largely because I've got so many options for teams already. Looking forward to putting together an all-metal scout marine team!
  17. Well, if you consider that a single box of models is all you need to play a proper game of a single faction, and that the size of the board is smaller, and you don't need to buy a codex to get rules for your faction, then it is lower cost in total... the starter box mightn't be any cheaper than 40K's Dark Imperium, but it's more of a complete game.
  18. No no, it's that you can't have marines with guardsmen (or other Imperial factions) in the same team. Yeah, I was really hoping for something closer to Necromunda in price, especially with them reusing existing kits for the squads. Ahh well, the rulebook is an acceptable price, so I'll get that. Don't need the rest of the box contents anyway.
  19. Well as far as the troop choices are concerned, there's still room for expansion. Wouldn't be surprised to see Scorpions, Banshees, Warp Spiders and the like show up in their own Aspect Warrior team, for example, or see new options added to the Genestealer Cult when their codex releases. For me, I'm not sure how I'm going to buy into this one. The big box is tempting, but sounds like it might be $50+ more expensive than Necromunda (in NZD) and I do have plenty of minis to make Kill Teams for about half a dozen factions plus plenty of terrain, so if the book is significantly cheaper I think I'll just go with that.
  20. I made Black Forest cupcakes, ably assisted by my two-year-old helper. He approved of our work. Last baked thing that I ate was a little custard bun thing from the supermarket, they are about 60c each and very tasty.
  21. I have a tendency to binge. I binge a lot less now that I have to be careful what I watch in front of the boy. Three or four 40 minute episodes. Or, however long it takes for you to suddenly realise you've got work in six hours and you should probably get to bed.
  22. I'm guessing it'll probably cost around the same as Necromunda, despite having the terrain that Necromunda didn't have, because they're using existing kits for the teams. If they included all-new kits in the box I'd expect it to be considerably more expensive, just like if they included this kind of terrain on the Necromunda box.
  23. I can see why they'd use existing kits. Itmakes it an easier segue into full 40K; Genestealer Cult, Space Wolves and Orks are among the first factions being released for KT and are the next codex releases for 40K; and it's probably also a way of keeping the cost of the boxed set down with all of the new terrain that's going into it. I wouldn't be surprised if the Rogue Trader set comes with a terrain setup more like Necromunda, representing the interior of a Rogue Trader's ship, rather than a full 3D kit.
  24. GW has revealed a lot of new information about their new iteration of Kill Team on the Warhammer Community page. The boxed set: Whoo Genestealer Cult! Main points from the article: - Approximately 5-10 minis per team. - Similar but different to 8th edition 40K, including an alternating activation system. - Designed for matched play (tournaments), narrative play (campaigns), and open play (throw down some minis and go for broke). - Progression in campaigns involves skill trees. - To be expanded by Killzone sets (with a new board, terrain, and rules to represent a particular warzone) and Kill Team starter sets (with a squad of guys, a terrain kit and relevant faction-specific rules). - The previously teased Rogue Trader will be an expansion for this game. - This will be replacing Shadow War: Armageddon. Personally I'm pretty hyped for this. A 22"x30" board is very portable, the terrain looks ace, it's by the same rules team who did Shadespire, and having Genestealer Cult in the box makes me think there'll be a GC codex release to coincide with it.
