  1. Wow...this is the most hilarious thing I've ever heard...cruel and sadistic, but hilarious. Not that I've had terribly many, but I don't recall having much problem with MREs...of course, as someone who once ate three pounds of provolone in less than 3 hours, I'm probably in the same category as Cuculain up there. Maybe I should pick up some MREs for dinner sometime. Sounds easier than lasagna.
  2. Whoo! Pretty pretties! And I agree with all of the above with the 54mm models...when I painted the Celebration Sophie, I learned sooo much (the fact that I ignored the models that came with the LtPK: skintones and just used the instructions on Sophie didn't hurt!). I'll have to figure out a reason to pick up that cowgirl...she looks like fun to paint, but I have no real need to have that mini in my display case. All four of these "greens" are awesome. Reaper keeps getting my money!
  3. So I was mad at my minis last night...I was trying to paint, but I was just in that mood where I hated everything I'd already started. So I looked in my drawer of primed-but-not-painted minis, and there's Olivia...she serves no game or display purpose right now (purchased her as a candidate for a PC, and a more suitable mini was chosen), so I decided to do something crazy. Colors I would never normally put next to each other...she doesn't look especially horrid, either. All told, I think this was between 2 and three hours of work, the fasted I've ever painted a mini with highlights and shading. And she was fairly fun, so I'm happy. Oh, I made sure to include an inset so you can see the Worst Face Ever...her eyes are just...blobbish. Meh. Tell me what you think!
  4. /offtopic I'm not pimping any aardvarks anytime soon, but I just have to say...57 points to Frosch for mentioning the Death of Rats. /offtopic

Thanks for the responses, guys...Rocky, the basework was actually one of the simplest parts of this piece for me...it's just a bunch of greenstuff, plus some Vallejo water effects and woodland scenics vegetation. The hardest part was figuring out how to shape the ground...I'm not sure you can tell from the picture, but I tried to put a "snake track" from the water up to her current location. Glad you like the terrain, though! I like making those scenic bases for figures I know won't be on my tabletop, since it can really make some of the paint scheme more fun.
  6. I have to echo Vil-hatarn on this one...there are things in that sculpt that make it my favorite gryphon ever...and there are things in that sculpt that just hurt to look at. Your paint, though...wow. Beautiful palette, and that face is spot-on. Brilliant work on the eye, there. Really nice. And I definitely like your patterning for the feathers. Pretty! Edit: on second glance, I see what the sculpt is doing in my brain, now. That gryphon, especially the head, has a very heraldic look to it. That's why I like your paint of the face so much, too...it matches that very stately quality of the sculpt beautifully!
  7. I think these are both awesome! I'm painting up the female sea elf (my WIP thread shows her), and I'm hoping I can make her dark blues look as nice as that wereshark's dark colors. That's a beauty! The green sea elf is really nice, too, as I love those yellows. You did a really nice job finding the light on him. Really stunning work.
  8. Here's what I painted up for Flynn for the Winter Exchange...as she is a marilith, she became affectionately known as "Mary" as I worked on her. Now that she's arrived, I'll let the rest of you see. Here's a back view, and a link for another, rather more naughty, full view. Let me know what you think...I'm happy with her, but I know there are things I could have done; my skin is fairly thick, so honest opinions are always welcome! Aside from the obvious gaming-related things? Webcomics. I will waste 28 hours of any given day reading webcomics. They have made me late for work, they have led me to forget eating for a time, and broken into time formerly spent on other hobbies. I love reading webcomics. Even the bad ones. I do have some standards, but some of the garbage in my favorites list is just awful. My favorites right now: OoTS (and Erfworld to a far lesser extent), Misfile, and Girl Genius. Crimson Dark is nice, but the art doesn't grab me as much...Alpha Shade does the same thing...Angels 2200 is too infrequent right now...No Need for Bushido feels too spaced out for an action/adventury comic...and so on and so forth, ad infinitum, ad nauseam. But I read them anyway. And the other, far more hilariously embarassing thing...I can sing along with (and even enjoy) the entirety of the first Spice Girls album. Isn't that horrific?
  10. I'll echo a lot of what Dr. J had to say...I love the greens, and the armor he's wearing is lovely; the cloth you've done is a really nice contrast to those greens, and well done. That base is also some pretty spiffy work...not too cluttered, but clearly a muddy, swampy chunk of terrain. My big critique isn't actually in the realm of your painting skills, but actually one of thematic consistency...the swordblade and the skulls in the basket, and to a lesser extent the basket itself, are all beautifully painted...but too clean for my tastes. I'm picturing this slimy fellow wandering through a swamp, picking up the bones of the fallen...bones picked up in a swamp would be covered in mud...even if he cleaned them off, they'd be stained a bit more. The sword is a bit trickier (and I have a lot less room to talk, since NMM is not my specialty in the least), but I'd like to see a darker metal, or perhaps a darker reflection. Again, these items are all beautifully painted, but I'd think a bit more...grunge?...maybe we'll just call it weathering...would be helpful in tying everything together. As always, I'm really impressed by your work, and, as always, YMMV when it comes to my comments.
  11. huh...I find it strangely comforting that, having just counted them, my total number of out-of-blister, desirous of paint models is 42.
  12. Woo! I've finally finished my winter exchange project, which I'll post whenever it arrives, so I've done a bit of work on the guild...here's Thalassa, with a basecoat of skin (a few highlights that you can't tell are there), basecoated hair, and the start of a big experiment: tattoos. The skin is one of the various blue triads (in another room, and I'm making this quick, so I'll post that later). The hair is green liner and brown liner, more or less 60/40. Tattoos are currently white, but will fade a bit to a subtle blue-ness as the skin progresses. The tat on her right calf is my so-so attempt at the kanji for "water," (according to "www.kanjiaday.com," or something like that) and the other leg is just a little wave motif.
  13. I second that! And I want to include all the appendices (animals, etc.) at the end of that book! On beyond Zombie, if you will! And I'm done with exclamation points for my next 15 posts or so...good grief. I was under the impression that Reaper was using DHL molds for these PPPMs? In which case I'd really like it if they started with the townsfolk packs...then went to the monsters. How many of us are in desperate need of more heroes? But NPCs and zombies are very important. And, as was said before, kobolds. Always more kobolds. With the right number of kobolds, I could crush an ECL 20 adventuring party. Mwahahahaha...
  14. I just have to say, these guys floored me. I wish I could effectively pull off something in such a limited pallette. I do think the skin and blades are a bit close, and I agree with Jubilee about adding a hint of color to the skin (I'm leaning more toward something purple)...otherwise, wow. Thanks for sharing; makes me wish all the more that I could make it to RCon.
  15. Hey, nice job on this one! I have to agree with you on the "not slimy" bit, but I think the wet-look on the belly scales is nice...most snakes, after all, have a somewhat satin look to their scales. I would like to see a little more contrast in the wing membranes....those big, flat surfaces are a great opportunity to try blending or fading from one color to the next (the first wet blending I ever attempted was on this model...maybe I should go back and finish more than the wings, sometime!). Oh, the face is nice, too! I love the fade on those horns, and that beady little eye is creeping me out. Good stuff.
  16. Only reason I could see to bid that much is if I were a collector and really, REALLY interested in "first edition" prints. But I've never understood why anyone wants to collect a first edition chunk of pewter...I mean, I want to paint the pretties, not leave 'em in the blister.
  17. retooling a green? Nah... Although I'm pretty certain Klocke has an armature with Tara the Silent's behind already built into it. He's re-used that butt at least twice that I've seen. Not that I blame him...it's a marvel of callipygian perfection. Overall, I do like these sculpts...lots...and I want the fire giant, cockeyed or no. Really nice work there (and not Tara's booty!). All of these new sculpts should find their way to my shelf...

wow, this is purty! I really like this very different take on alastriel...not a color scheme I've thought of for her, before. Looks pretty spiffy. That red gem is very nice, too...theres a semiprecious stone it reminds me of, and though I can't recall the name of the stone, I like the look. Very nice.
  19. That base is lovely...some really nice 2d painting on that water (it looks like it's a 2d surface, other than the rocks?). I'd like to see some of that skill applied to your swords...not necessarily NMM (I don't do it, either), but you can shade with metallics, and if you can get smooth transitions with it, it can look pretty awesome. I'm not sure, looking at this one, what he's got all over his body...are they vines? A better transition on the skin, and maybe some darklining would make this more clear. Overall, awesome base, great color scheme.
  20. Actually, it was only Tremors 3 that introduced the little chickenish leggy-toothy-wormy things. The "larval" worm-forms were called "graboids," but I don't remember what the mutated version was. And, Tremors 2 & 3 were absolutely NOT sad B-grade movies! They were far, far more than that, and it saddens me that you would imply such a thing. They were at least g- or h-grade! Tremors 1 was the only thing remotely "B" about the whole series! Now that I have that out of my system...these are really great little sculpts! Little land-sharky toothy things. Fun colors to work with, too.
  21. Samaedi, glad I could help a bit...I think, actually, a black glaze over a dark red basecoat might work better, but I'm actually not sure how well black really glazes. You might try both ways on something aside from Zizzix...that's one reason I have a bunch of primed plastic bases lying around! Good luck with getting paint back on the pewter!
  22. I'm also in the black with bright highlights camp...although a very (very!) dark red might work as well as black; some obsidian examples I've seen have a deep reddish cast when the light filters through the thicker parts. Doing a very basic black w/highlights scheme may end up just giving you a very flat black stone...you might want to try NMM to get the very glossy look obsidian has. As Aryanun said, searching for images will definitely help. You'll be able to find lots of arrowheads and the like in obsidian, so this should be easy to get ideas for...getting those ideas to pewter is what's always the hard/fun part! Make sure you keep us updated; this should be a neat piece to see over in Show Off.
  23. The one thing I miss about living in Texas--besides being near Reaper HQ, of course--is easy access to Blue Bell ice cream. Now that's the stuff, regardless of flavor.
  24. Oh, lordha' mercy on us all... As for the Slithe, I kinda feel like the older ones look like Locanthas, and the new ones are dead-on Sahuagin. With the exception of the old Slithe queen, the big Alien-lookin' one...she's totally a half-fiend sahuagin priestess of Blibdoolpoolp or whichever crazy vowel-heavy undersea god they worship. Not that that has anything to do with the boob comment. aside from the multiple "oo"s. Maybe that's a parallel we should note, though. I don't know. Stop listening to me. I'll stop typing now.
  25. She looks very nice. I have a player who we have just given his first "dose" of mini painting, and his next PC is likely to use this mini. I'll have to show this to him. That liquid is awful purty. Really nice job on that. And I do like the natural shade on the robes. Great paint!
