Dragon Snack

As much as I would love to see prepainted Townsfolk and larger plastic models, I would rather see the line take off first so that it has staying power. There's a reason these minis have all been "done before", it's that they sell. Townsfolk get lots of requests in the regular 'Minis we would like to see' thread too, yet they continue to undersell other sculpts - requests for things on message boards does not equal sales. For all your poo-pooing of the line, you still say you will buy a couple. Doesn't that say something? Nah, Statler and Waldorf were funny...

LSS, my website has been hosted by GoDaddy for a while now. However, I've had a few outages lately (at least, I've noticed them lately now that my message boards send me an email when it goes down). The kicker though, was when GoDaddy overcharged me $10 (for a couple of domains) - and then compounded it by being complete jerks about it when I called to complain (including, but not limited to, lying to me). THEN, they re-upped my hosting without telling me (charged my CC automatically). That's pretty much the last straw, I'm done with them. That means I need a new hosting site that I can transfer my website to pretty quickly. Since I've got the game store now, I may as well look for something that comes with shopping cart capabilities (so I can get an online store up and running). If Apache isn't much of a problem (my coding skills are so 1990's), that would be a bonus (I can make my forums search-bot friendly and hopefully pull in some new customers from that). So, I'm looking for... Reliability Ease of transition Relatively cheap (I'm currently paying $7-8/month) Capable of hosting an online store Linex or Apache Suggestions? Thanks!

Sounds familiar... It seems like this would have been a simple thing to get into production. Maybe accessory/conversion packs don't sell that well?

Maybe he chews his minis? Who are we to judge? Actually, if he has little ones, I can see avoiding lead minis. Those things get into everything (the little ones, not the lead minis)... It should be noted though, that the regular Reaper minis don't say "lead free" for a reason (although I do believe that it was posted that the levels are so low they legally could, but that Reaper didn't want to mislead their customers into thinking that there was none at all).

It's OK, you can say Wizards of the Coast... Some of the "I've got no place left to go" feeling is perpetuated by fans of the DDM line. Surprisingly, there is a somewhat large anti-Reaper contingent of DDM players/buyers that will always chime in to shout down any mention of the LE line. As much as there's always a group that's anti-WotC for being part of a big (read: evil) corporation, they have their counterparts in those who write off Reaper as failed because they can't come out with a huge new release every couple of months. It's been a while since I've been on other sites discussing DDM, but an underlying issue rarely brought up was that if Reaper succeeded with non-random prepaints, then WotC's distribution model (and their stated reasons for it) would have been shown to be a farce. Now that WotC is changing the distribution of DDM this is probably less prevalent, but I have no doubts that the sting of an upstart Reaper challenging "their" collectible game is still in the back of their minds. I bet there's also some backlash from the fact that Reapers main product is 'paint it yourself', but since they rarely come out and say that I could be ascribing other motivations to their vile.

I like this idea... Not too keen on more forums though, I actually wish we could make some disappear (you can collapse some, but not all of them).

Did they just make a huge purchase? Having just made a few rather large Reaper purchases for the opening of my store, I can sympathize with that feeling...

Didn't know. My store has only been open for a month anyway, so if they were the 'old' Pro Paints it was before my store opened...

Point Of Information: The DDM bases actually are not 1" and 2" round, they're a tad smaller. The 4" DDM bases were actually square (the Icon Dragons had 4" bases). But I wasn't a friendly retail guy then...

Yeah, the pricing kind of puts me off too. Because Reaper doesn't have the economies of scale I think LE would work out better for larger figs. Using multipiece figs probably doesn't help keep costs down (off the top of my head, one piece Zombie - $2.49, multipiece Good Fighter - $4.49). Other than DDMs though (which has dirt cheap commons and uncommons since people chase the rares), who has much cheaper? Confrontation has 6 human size minis for $30 ($5 a mini - although a lot of places are discounting them) and the new DDM distributions raises their price to 3 for $12 ($4 a mini). Not a bad idea, but you are the first, that I am aware of, to ask for this. I've seen it mentioned before on other message boards, so he is not alone. Pricing would probably be the biggest concern though... I think a 10-12 pack of Zombies or Skeletons, packaged similar to the Warlord units, would sell at retail. What was this? Is it still available?

But for an every week thing? If all I ran was games with your own decks, wouldn't it end up being "TS is here with his killer deck, why bother playing..."? I've already had a couple of guys tell me that they don't like going to another store because they know who they will beat and who will beat them. Well, I'll get there eventually, but it annoys me that I have to run an "organized event" before I can run an event for them. Apparently a Savage Worlds game and a Paint And Take don't count... Here's a question for you, can you run a booster draft with just Conflux? I was going to do that just to run a FNM, but one of my customers says you can't do it (not enough land or monsters?).

I've been a DJ at a local radio station for the past 8 years (90.5fm WBER), I wish I had a tenth of his talent. With all the guest hosts that he's had lately (actually, since the passing of his wife), you kind of knew something was up... Rumors of radios demise have been greatly exaggerated...

But once they've got you in their sights, they will keep you in them. I got audited 5 years ago for the first time and have now been audited 3 times (and last year I gave in and checked the 'you do the calculations for me' box, I figured if they calculated it they could "pre-audit" me and I could skip the waiting and hand wringing). That's not just "unlucky", it has to be hard wired into the system. The good news is I've gotten money back every time I was audited (although twice it was less than $20 - at least I didn't have to go in for those), so it's not as bad as people make it out to be. It's still unnerving, especially since the second time I got audited was right after my accountant passed away (I'm still missing paperwork from the ensuing fiasco when the family sold his client list to another accountant).

I haven't had any requests for Yu-Gi-Oh yet. Probably a good thing... Lots of interest in Magic, but I know very little about it other than I want to run Friday Night Magic. It's funny that you should mention booster drafts and Standard format, since I've already had a couple of players try to tell me to run Type 2 events (which I think are old cards - if I can't sell it, why run it?). As for actually running WotC events, well, we're having "issues" (and since a small LGS means nothing to WotC, guess which way it's flowing). Apparently they want "twenty seven eight-by-ten color glossy photographs with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one explaining what each one was" of my store before they even start the process of anointing me a "real store". It's funny, I see lots of their product on Amazon, who don't meet most of the criteria WotC wants me to, but the real slap in the face is that the local WAL-MARTS come up in their online store locator. I can't seem to recall them ever running Friday Night Magic. The rolling eye smiley doesn't convey my feelings adequately... Sure it's an uphill battle getting people to play something that's not number one, but I've hooked a couple people into playing the Call of Cthulu CCG already (and I've had someone approach me interested in demoing the WoW CCG) and I'll be more than happy to teach people to play Savage Worlds instead of D&D (the local RPGA DM is actively promoting another store anyway). If I've got to grow the market, I'll do it with companies who don't throw roadblocks in front of me (it should come as no surprise that Reaper sent me a nice care package, but even GW actually sought me out). I already have back-up sources that give me a pretty good discount on WotC products (most of them anyway, still looking for an AH source), so I can serve my customers who want them without buying direct. None of the Magic players I've talked to even cared about DCI anyway, they just want to play without having to drive half an hour. Man I wish I could make some more money on soda. I've kept my prices low to draw people in and I barely go through a case a week. I think it's highway robbery to sell a can of soda for $1, but both of the pizza places near me sell theirs for that - twice what I charge. I also sell my 20 oz bottles for 99 cents ($1.12 after tax and deposit), they charge $1.60! I have a Coke cooler (provided free of charge by Coke, talk about not putting roadblocks in front of your partners!) and a smaller one (my own, with Pepsi, Mtn Dew, water, and, soon, energy drinks) that I keep fully stocked.

Thanks all! Despite long hours of staring at the walls (I don't have internet in the store yet!), I'm above my projected first months sales (I did a soft open first). Running GAGG (a local Con) put me over the top last weekend, but I still have room to grow though. The bad thing is, my best sellers are 2E AD&D and $1 bin DDM commons and uncommons. One that's out of print and another that's about to have it's distribution changed... And yes, I'm still conflicted about not being able to go to Gen Con should the store take off, but I have to get it there first, so it's back to work for me!
