    pcktlnt: The Beginnings.

Thanks Anne. I will try that. I started on my third miniature and already put black armor on it. Was testing out silver on top of black. (I made a mess of it though).

And the second miniature, I used some Dusk Skin and Walnut Brown. Whatever you do, don't put honed steel on a cloak. *shakes head* More like he's wearing some type of grey tarp. Not sure about the sword, the bone part enclosed by metal. Definitely need to do a lot of touch ups on this one. I might not give him the paint stripping bath I was thinking of. It's not that bad and I do have a second one to practice and improve on.

I tried black washing the first miniature. From the camera shot, it does not look like a smooth transition, but in person, it looks great, you can't see the jump. There is also darkening on his face that the camera erased. Question, is the paint suppose to rub off? You can tell where I have been handling the miniature (bottom base).

    Oathsworn Dwarves Kickstarter

Wow. I'm totally backing your next project. Not a huge fan of dwarves, so I skipped this one, though that Ranger is incredible. Your sculpts are beautiful, the speed at which you release them and fulfill commitment is incredible. Keep up the great work.

Also, can anyone tell me how to make the attachments smaller so it doesn't take up so much board space? I have seen others post their pictures and when you click on the picture, it increases. Thank you very much.

    pcktlnt: The Beginnings.

Started a second miniature so I can practice washes and stuff without hurting the first one too much. Yup, I have no clue what I'm doing and it looks like a mess. I'll have to clean it up somehow. Played around with some paints. Mixing and seeing what happens when black and white are mixed together. I was not sure what I was expecting other than grey. lol Added another two drops of black and some water to create a wash. It didn't work out the way I planned. Let's uh cover up some mistakes by making it look like this is a wanderer and the cloak accumulated dirt. Forgot what colors I mixed together. I think it was muddy brown and stone grey. Now I see why people say to keep a journal nearby. I like the color but cannot remember how to get to it. Painted the skulls around the feet. So, just having fun putting paint here and there. Seeing what happens when you put brown there, with wash here, and dabbed with honed steel. Looks like he walked through rain kind of. What a weird shine. Result, may finish painting him up and then stripping him down. I hear Simple Green works on bones, so that will be fun to try out.

Was trying to create colors and make washes. Lessons learned 1) My water is hard water. When the paint dries, it will have some funky rings on the edge of the paint. 2) Should use 10 or more drops of one color to 1 drop of black or white to have slight shading, otherwise it would be pretty drastic color change. 3) Paint brushes hold a lot more paint then they look. I do have a few questions 1) For washes, if it pools in a crevice, is that too much? 2) For dry brushing, how do I prevent the look of brush strokes? Thank you

Thank you for helping out. Regarding lighting: I do have a lamp I use in the wee hours of the night and a magnifying lamp in the garage somewhere. I should bring that out. At one point of time I couldn't tell what was what anymore and just painted it. A different color and fixed accordingly. Regarding washes: I will test it out today on the next mini I pull out. Let's see what happens.

    pcktlnt: The Beginnings.

Thanks you everyone. Of course I am always open to critiques and tips and how to improve, otherwise I'm going to be stuck at beginner forever. I shall try washes with the next miniature then. I'm trying to read how to make some. Some tutorials are saying to add a drop of soap to break impurities (huh??) and then water and some darker paint. How important is that soap? Or should I be finding something else to add to the wash mix?

Ya'll were not kidding when you say the camera reveals all. It looks great from faraway. I shall be going back to touch up a lot of stuff. One day I shall progress to washes and highlights and all that, but I'm pretty satisfied with my first painted one.

    77163 Male Storm Giant Bones

Was scrolling the pictures and came upon the facial shot. He looks kind of sad. "Darn those adventurers, sneaking a peek at my girl, stealing my treasure, and getting away" :(

    [Group/Open] WIP Wyrmgear

Ooh pretty. With the first few pictures I thought you were making solar cells on his wings.
  19. Yea, mine have been sitting loose in the box and some of the ones that could not stand up can stand up now (reason I noticed was that I started digging through to see which ones needed boiling).

    Quick question on paints

Some people paint the Bones using a primer first and then crafts paint from Wal-Mart, Hobby Lobby, or Michaels.
  21. Don't know how to edit on the iPod touch, but wanted to add that reaper has gained a new customer and I am pretty happy that my first miniature experience is from them.
  22. I have never bought a miniature prior to the kickstarter. I am pretty satisfied with the bones product. When I first read the thread title, i thought the material was going to be like foam and squish and take forever to return to shape, but that was just the wrong word to describe the material. The bones product is bendable or twistable and I am okay with that. The miniatures are going to see gameplay and from my short experience with the affordable miniatures, I am okay with how the material performs.

  24. I like the blue/green leds more. Could you shave some parts of the sides so it becomes thinner? Sort of like working with pumpkins. http://www.panelsonpages.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/mickey-chernabog-800-1013.jpg An example is that pumpkin. Notice some parts are shaved just enough for light to pop out, but not fully dominate the figure. I wonder if that would affect the integrity of Kaly.

    What do you regret?

OMG...why didn't I think of that. Would have liked to add some giants.
