June 18: What are some overlooked professions needed to survive a zombie (or other scary trope thing here) apocalypse?
Everybody wants the big fighter on their team, but who else would you need?
Politicians.
If you ask me, if we're all gonna die, let us go quickly and peacefully. Meanwhile, leave the politicians behind to suffer the slow, agonizing realization that they are all about to die and yet still can't do anything but argue among themselves while the zombies slowly, yet inevitably, close in.

June 14: How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
Thanks, Cyradis! Really.
I can't believe no-one has responded with "A woodchuck would chuck no amount of wood since a woodchuck can't chuck wood"
Not sure if I should be disappointed in y'all or if I should just sit here quietly feeling old.
SpoilerProbably both

June 13: Where do you find mini painting or general art inspiration?
A place, a show, a song?
If you are talking about general inspiration, then right here. This place (and you guys!) is what inspires me.
If you are talking about specific inspiration for what colours to use on a mini, then I generally paint to the official reference art if the mini is game related. If there isn't official reference art, then I try to find pictures that other people have posted of that mini and then copy it.
One day, I'll try to use colour theory to come up with my own colour scheme for a mini. One day...

Woohoo - I finally started painting my KDM set!
As you can see, I tried to really push the contrast for the OSL on this one. Considering it's the first time I've done this, I'm really happy with how it came out. What does put me in two minds though is the fact that now I've done this, I have to do this for all the survivors and monsters otherwise they will look odd next to each other on the board!
The other thing that happened is that midway through painting this, I lost motivation and it sat there for a couple of weeks while I waited for a spark of interest to return. Looking back, I've been doing a lot of single minis so I think I need to cleanse my palette by doing some simple army painting (i.e. basecoat and wash).

June 9 and 10: What's your favorite way to treat yourself?
Are you thinking about doing that this weekend or soon?
Thanks, Crowley!
A medium rare steak in a NICE steakhouse.
Steak is my favourite food of all time and as such, I don't normally eat it and save up until I can splurge on a nice steakhouse steak. At most, I treat myself to this once (or twice) a year.
As I said, not something I do normally but when I do -

June 7: Will you cross anything off your bucket list this year?
Thanks, TGP!
I don't have a bucket list. I don't keep a to-do list. And I certainly don't make New Year's resolutions.
At the end of the day, I can look back and sigh in contentment that I don't have anything outstanding to keep me awake into the wee hours.

June 6: If you were in charge of your favorite movie/tv franchise, what would do with it next?
Thanks, Crowley!
I would take Star Wars and make the next movie feature ZERO white Caucasians. I've always wondered if a loud enough scream from the US would make it all the way here to HK and I figure this is my best way of finding out.
PS You should never, ever (EVER!) put me in a position of power/authority.

I actually had to google that image to find out what you were talking about! That's awesome.
Also, I'm talking about mooncake, not Mooncake.

June 5: What's your favorite season? What do you like about it?
Ooh - good question! Let's see.
Winter - nope. It gets cold in Hong Kong and we don't have any form of central heating in our home. As a result, I dress up in multiple layers at home - including a heavy jacket - which makes it hard to do anything that requires manual dexterity (such as painting).
Spring - nope. Springtime in Hong Kong is annoying as it's rainy season. And rainy season in HK generally means typhoons and thunderstorms (thunderbolt and lightning very very frightening me!). Besides, spring time always sets off my allergies.
Summer - nope. Summer in Hong Kong is ridiculously hot. A real issue for me as my wife is cold blooded and doesn't let me turn on the air conditioning! I spend most of summer in a heat induced lethargic state of laziness.
Hmmm. I guess that leaves Autumn as the winner.
In Autumn, the temperature has started to cool off relative to Summer. Which basically means you don't have the boiling highs of Summer nor the freezing lows of Winter. At the same time, the humidity levels have also started to drop which makes breathing in general a lot easier.
Also, we get to stuff our pie-holes with mooncake during the mid-Autumn festival. Yum!

May 29: What was your favorite toy growing up?
I guess it would have to be my collection of toy cars which I don't have anymore. I remember I used to have a ridiculous amount of fun "driving" my various toy cars around home and I could spend hours just quietly sitting in a corner making engine noises while I played (although it didn't feel like hours at the time!). I don't recall this myself but according to my dad, every time we went out, I would beg for a new toy car.
Judging from the size of my collection, he didn't always acquiesce.

This is very much a question with a different answer depending on whether it's BL or AL. Given I am now AL, I'll go with telepathy.
SpoilerBL = Before Logan
AL = After Logan

Disclaimer: Please don't kill the animals
I was initially going to with with something in the insect category. However, judging by all the horror B movies I've seen, we already had that fight and humans won.

Surprisingly no. Not because I don't like them but because I'm generally not creative enough to come up with them.

May 15: Is there a mini or model that you love but have been too afraid to paint?
Interesting question.
If you had asked this before, I might have said that I was afraid to paint my KDM minis. The quality is so high and the game so expensive that I definitely wanted to do a good job on them. But I have actually started painting them now so I'm no longer afraid to paint them right?
Well, maybe.
I can't deny the fact that I'm painting them at a very slow pace. In fact, I'm still on the first survivor. Part of me wonders if that fear of doing a bad job on them is still there but just repressed into my subconscious.

May 14: What is your favorite way to relieve or temporarily escape stress?
I initially took up mini painting as a way to relieve stress. And initially, it worked. In those days, I was very much a basecoat and wash kind of painter and that was enough.
Over time though, I've tried to improve my painting skill and as a result, I've found that painting minis doesn't relieve stress for me like it used to.
Recently, I've found myself going back to videogames to relieve stress. I never actually stopped playing videogames but I do have to admit that I'm a little sad that I'm not painting as much as I used to.

Weekend Topic: Museums! Do you like going to museums? What were some of your favorite exhibits, and if you could create your own, what would it cover?
I do like going to museums although I don't get to go very often. With the kids, whenever we go to a museum, we invariably get hit with a constant stream of "Daaaad, when do we get to play?"
I'll give a shoutout to the Museum of Natural History in London. Went there with the kids and I thought it would be awesome to see the dinosaurs (I used to love dinosaurs as a kid). Not quite the success I had hoped for as there was an exhibit with a life sized "realistic" T-Rex which moved and roared. I thought it was awesome but the kids were terrified.

May 10: Do you have a favorite book genre? What do you like about it?
While I can be a bit eclectic with my reading, I do tend to prefer Fantasy or Sci-Fi (actually, more space opera than sci-fi).
I'm actually in the middle of reading some Warhammer novels at the moment which I got from Humble Bundle a while back. Never read the Warhammer books before and, while they aren't great, I have to admit that they are better than I expected.
But then, I initially had very low expectations.

May 7: What part of the painting process are you good at?
Being completely honest, I really don't know what part I would be comfortable saying I'm good at.
Not so long ago, I would have said that I was good at "good enough" - i.e. I was comfortable with the knowledge that I was painting at a tabletop level and wasn't really pushing myself to get better.
However, I then started on some KDM minis and despite my initial thought of painting to a tabletop level, I couldn't help myself and have been trying to do some OSL on the mini.*
* They are still tabletop level but the fact that I'm even trying something new makes me wonder why I'm trying to push my skills again and learn something new when I made a pact to first get through some of my hoard of minis!

May 3: Do you know a second (or more!) language or would you like to learn one someday?
As with most people in Hong Kong, I can speak English, Cantonese and a little bit of Mandarin.
I'll also be honest and admit that, while I'm not averse to learning more languages, I don't really have the drive or motivation to do so.

Question, April 25: How many pairs of shoes is too many and how close to that limit are you?
When you say shoes, do you actually mean shoes - i.e. the things that we wear on our feet? Or is "shoes" a proxy for other things that people on this forum may be buying and hoarding?
You know what - never mind. I'll take the safe option and say that there is no such thing as too many shoes!

Getting to Know You, June 2018
in Off-Topic Rampancy
Posted
Utopia.
I'm not even that bothered about which specific utopia as there have been so many in different books/shows/games. It would just be nice to be able to turn on the news without an underlying feeling of dread.
