  1. Next up, and not as successful, a couple of fire beetles: I really need to get better at layering. I tried a ham-fisted version of OSL on the backside. It's not great. Also, I tried to do some OSL stuff on the wings, where the light from their fire guts would shine through the gap: ... yeah. So I just covered all of that up. Learning! Base: 9289 Noir Black Base Coat: 9028 Muddy Brown Wash: 9255 Black Wash, thinned quite a bit Fire butt: 9217 Magma Red Base Highlights: drybrushed 9086 Stone Grey Buggy Highlights: 3:2 9028 Muddy Brown + 9249 Sandy Brown Buggy Highlights 2: 3:4 9028 Muddy Brown + 9249 Sandy Brown Fire butt, 2nd coat: 9217 Magma Red, then 9247 Saffron Sunset drybrush Spots: 9008 Sun Yellow, 9247 Saffron Sunset, 9218 Lava Orange Eyes: 9247 Saffron Sunset Wing glow: 9247 Saffron Sunset wash, 9218 Lava Orange wash (then overpainted because it was terrible) Back glow: 9218 Lava Orange drybrush, then 9217 Magma Red drybrush Wings Try 2 Base Coat: 9028 Muddy Brown, three layers 9028 Muddy Brown + 9249 Sandy Brown increasing SB each layer 9107 Brush-on Sealer
  2. Okay, paint fans. First up: More Rats! Woo! (ahem) Wife continues to be miffed by my seeming obsession with squirming vermin. Can she not see the inherent beauty here? Anyway, these are pretty straightforward: Base: 9086 Stone Grey Base Coat: 9028 Muddy Brown Separate rats: 9289 Noir Black or 9249 Sandy Brown Skull: 9031 Tanned Leather Wash: 9255 Black Wash, thinned quite a bit Skull highlights: 9031 Tanned Leather More Skull highlights: 9031 Tanned Leather + 9143 Yellowed Bone Drybrushed highlights: 9086 Stone Grey (black), 9031 Tanned Leather + 9249 Sandy Brown (lt brn), 9028 Muddy Brown + 9249 Sandy Brown (dk brn) Eyes: 9037 Pure Black 9107 Brush-on Sealer Honestly, this sculpt was kind of a pain in the butt. I had a hard time picking out all of the details (oh, that's a SKULL!) and the overlapping tails were no fun. Good practice I suppose. I think they turned out okay.
  3. In my only foray into repainting a pre-paint, Rawr, I just cleaned it and painted directly over it. My experiments in stripping pre-paints weren't very successful. Simple Green did nothing. Acetone was too fiddly to work with, left a nasty white haze all over the mini, and still didn't get all the paint off.
  4. I guess when I do it, I kinda stir the paint with the tip of the brush. Maybe that technique won't work for me as I go on.
  5. Dumb newbie (off topic!) question: Why the concern about what brush to mix paint? This seems like kind of a low-impact operation.
  6. Just curious when the new paint colors from the first Kickstarter will be available at retail. Also, some of the later triads never did get swatch images in the store.
  7. Holy goodness, THAT'S what that is. I could not figure out what was going on there. It sorta looks mouseish, but then... not. This. Changes. EVERYTHING.
  8. Goodness, this is something else. I hope I can get half as good in twice the time. Fantastic work, Heidi!
  9. Er, whoops. I put this in the other thread already: My dry brusher is a Reaper Taklon #2 flat that came with their 3-brush set. Shortish and stout. Being a flat, I can use it for narrow details, or broad surfaces. Seems to be working okay so far.

  11. I'm new at this myself, so I don't have much in the way of useful advice to give. I just want you all to know that I really like the work being done here and will be stealing as much of it as I can.
  12. ... where were we... oh, yes! Rats! Turns out it's a lot easier to paint when I don't stop to take pictures after each step. Oh, well. Anyway, I'm pretty pleased with these. Decent tabletop minis is all I was shooting for. Gory details: Brown rats and stones: 9255 Black Wash Albino: 9039 Pure White wash Black rats: 9230 Soft Blue wash + 9255 Black Wash (a failed experiment. this did almost nothing.) Stones 5:2 9086 Stone Grey : 9289 Noir Black Black rats highlighting: 5:2 9086 Stone Grey : 9289 Noir Black Stones and Black rats highlighting and dry brushing: 9086 Stone Grey Brown rats dry brushing: 9110 Oiled Leather Albino: 9039 Pure White Teeth: 9292 Bathalian Chitin (of course. what else would one use?) Eyes: 9037 Pure Black Albino Eyes: 9286 Punk Rock Pink Additional Albino drybrushing: 9286 Punk Rock Pink & 9039 Pure White 9107 Brush-on Sealer FWIW, my wife hates rats. HATES them. Some sort of childhood emotional scarring due to the film Willard, I think. Anyway, she'll be please that I'm getting these off my desk. Up next, rat swarms!
  13. Mini Market is local to me! Best of both worlds! Moderately dangerous, tho'
  14. What would a self sufficient Bones line look like? Could we expect new Bones releases every month or two after KS II fulfillment?
  15. It's probably something like that. It is weird that a couple of things (PF Villians, Kaiju-guy) have SKUs in the Previous Bones ranges. (shrug)
  16. Why are they so different from previous Bones SKUs?
  17. My son fell and broke his arm, just got back from urgent care. (he's fine, just sore). Back in time for the wrap up, though!
  18. SKUs! Squeee! (I shouldn't be this excited about SKUs, but here we are). Interesting, it looks like they aren't grouping figures up at all, as far as I can tell. (Aside from multiples of one sculpt, of course.) So nothing like the familiars, rats, kobolds, goblins, etc. I guess this means none of them are going to be sprued together? Yeah, now that I look at them, they are curious. Maybe these aren't the retail SKUs and are just for the Kickstarter.
  19. SKUs! Squeee! (I shouldn't be this excited about SKUs, but here we are).

  22. Eh. It's just something handy to say that conveys excitement for the project.
