More minis from my Shelf of Shame Long-Term, Partially-Completed Backlog: A trio of kobolds from one of the Reaper Bones kickstarters! These are some of the tiniest minis I've painted. Even so, it took about 2 long evenings to complete them. I did lots of practice of NMM steel and gold. I'm now of the opinion that NMM works better than metallics for small minis. The clothing was originally red, but I found it was too close to the orange of the skin color and just blended together from about 2 feet away, so they got repainted to a color/tone that was more distinct. I prefer that my kobolds be weird dog/lizard hybrid creatures, so they all got black noses. It looks good on these! That brings the total minis I've painted this year to 19! (With another one in the wings.)

I recently finished a group of Reaper Bones miniatures. As they are so small they were a little hard to paint at some points. I'm fairly new painting miniatures so I was looking for some feedback and potentially some tips on how to improve in the future. All comments, advice, and constructive criticism is welcome. My own main criticism with them is the highlights as I'm not 100% where/how to paint proper highlights to make a natural look without a ton of brush strokes.

well, it seems to have been not quite a year since my last post, and a bit longer since my last post to Show Off. In the meantime, Nissiana and I have purchased a house, which ate most of the Fall, Winter and Spring, and our Summer has been, per usual, filled with rehearsals and performances. Although I am currently imbroiled with a production of "The Three Musketeers," I've managed to unpack some paint kit and brought it to work. My recent lunch breaks have yielded a passel of kobolds and a pile of rats, both of which will likely lurk the basements of Sharn (or the waste drain of an alchemist's lab, in the case of that one rat) soon enough. Anyway, these are all to a very rough "look ma, I finished!" standard, mostly just to knock some rust off my brushes. Hope you enjoy. Penny bases will be blacked eventually.

Here are some more Reaper Bones baddies. I made these guys for my Dungeons and Dragons campaign. I'm betting the numbers on the bases already gave that away though Just about everything I make is for gaming so I have to fight off the temptation of putting too much time into each model.

A quick paint and my first real basing experience. I used green stuff and a Happy Seppuku stamp. I am happy with how they turned out and I learned a lot in the process. The kobolds are nothing special, just cannon fodder for some pesky adventurers.

Finally, I started working on painting my first miniature! I've tried starting since the Bones 3 Kickstarter, and I want to thank everyone for their encouragement. Let's see what I've done so far. Wilson and Optimus!!!!!!!!!!!!!: My sacrificial constructs, I learned a lot from these little things. I primed WIlson with Krylon Black Matte Paint+Primer and Optimus with Plaid Clear Matte Acrylic Sealer, both painted with FolkArt acrylic paints and a size 0 Daler Rowney nylon brush. I learned a lot from them like some brush techniques and the importance of watering down thicker paints. Now, my first Kobold figure: I used the same black primer on this one. Had to strip it once because I sprayed it on a little too thick. Lesson learned. First shot at painting: Finally slopped paint on my first miniature. I painted this with Citadel Mephiston Red and a 00 Winsor & Newton synthetic brush. I would have used a sable or sable/synthetic brush but because of Russia things, the hobby store I went to wasn't able to restock. Poopy. I learned to control how much paint should be on the brush and how my brush strokes affect where the paint gets applied. I deliberately chose a small figure instead of a standard size one purely to force myself to learn control and painting techniques that will help me with larger ones. Now I need to decide if I should try lighter on the skin and if I should drybrush the new layer on, or if I should start painting the armor and accessories. Well, here goes nothing.

Well I got back from my second week of vacation in August, and realized I only had week and a day to get my quota done for the Resolutionary Painting Challenge for this month! A quick Sunday night dig through my drawers of Bones and I found some Kobolds to speed paint. These 9 were painted in maybe 4 hours over 5 lunch hours last week. Just base coats and a few details. Then brought home and Quickshaded. I then sprayed the first 3 with anti-shine, which frosted (due to the humidity I assume). So they were coated with a gloss brush on to try to save them. It brought them back some but they are still a little frosty in a few places...oh well, these are for table top ... They were then all coated with a brush on matt sealer. I may give them a bit more attention with the matt sealer tomorrow evening, but its almost 1 am here, so good enough for tonight...

Here we are with the crazy WIP of how Slaying: Monday came to be. Be warned, this is very intensive and picture heavy. Show-off set up by CW here. First off, it's a bit of an inside joke between those of us who frequent the Randomness Thread(s). Chaoswolf (rping his wolf) and me (rping a coffee chugging barbarian) have set forth on an epic quest to slay the vile "Monday" who ruins their weekends. I set forth on my own quest to make the scene and used the White Dragon Tavern (as Flamehawke's establishment) complete with a wanted poster for Monday (who we don't have any idea what it actually looks like) and one of her kobold minions as a server. 1) Reaper SKU #03362: Kjell Bloodbear, Barbarian, sculpted by Matt Gubser with weapon swap to an Axe and skull mug (made from a creature skull) 2) Dark Sword Miniatures SKU #DSM5064, Greywind Dire Wolf, sculpted by Tom Meier. 3) Reaper Bones Kobold from SKU #77010 (had a spear and sword), I converted to holding a Hirst Arts mug and a platter/bread from Hirst Arts as well. 4) Reaper Bones Eldritch Demon’s Head only (sculpted by Jason Wiebe) SKU #77113 with some Reaper Creature Componets (SKU #’s 03440 and 03334).

I got a new vampire box of bones, from the friend who talked me into buying one in the first place. So now I get to repaint all the minis I painted when I was just starting. is now This guy is a repost, now with gold bracers. He is from mice and mystics board game (I only bought the figures) and has gone from hero to villain In my campaign he is known as "The Lord of Cats" This figure will shortly serve as a Dire Lion, so I wanted to paint him as cat like as possible. Ill post the earlier (hellhound version) after I get a new picture of him. I think I completed hound in late 2013, shown is a second attempt at the him, the first was terrible. and thankfully has no photos.

One of my December painting goals is to finish off any minis I have that would have fallen under the "Dungeon attack" portion of the first Bones KS. I had already painted one set of kobolds when I first started painting bones but I still had three more lying around. The first group had been done in a reddish brown, but I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with the rest. Then I remembered (or perhaps made up) that some edition of DnD had kobolds that matched whatever type of dragon they served. Since I already kinda had red ones and didn't want to paint white ones, I painted a set of green, blue, and black. It's kind of nice just to paint for tabletop and not sweat the details on occasion. At the very least it's a lot faster! And as a bonus, a "let's decide to autofocus on the middle row" shot.

Well, someone had to do it. Feel free to post your Bones goblins, kobolds, and rats in here. A lot of n00bz people new to miniature painting (including myself) had expressed interest in painting the rats first. They're small, don't have much detail, and are generally non-threatening. Just like a CR 1/3 creature should be. So here are mine. After some attention with my needle files and a good scrub, I started off with some black slobbering. Most of these were done with 9037 Pure Black, the two all-black tail-up rats with 9289 Noir Black, just so I could see the difference. Noir Black is just a tiny, tiny bit lighter than the Pure Black. Someone with more experience could probably explain it better. I can only tell the difference when they're side-by-side. Here's some base coating. Straight 9384 Lonestar Leather on the brown ones. About a 5:2 mix of 9086 Stone Grey : 9289 Noir Black on the bases. Of course, you HAVE to have an albino. I basecoated this one with 9039 Pure White with juuuust a bit of 9286 Punk Rock Pink. I guess we'll see if that was a mistake or not. I also hit the bases with some 9086 Stone Grey. That's as far as I've gotten thus far. I kind of forget that I should be thinning the paint going on after the basecoats. I guess I'll get the hang of this. I'll probably hit the bases with a darker wash, then go for some highlights. Mr. albino will get a closer-to-pure-white coat, and the rest... I'll figure out as I go. Good painting everyone! -Joe
