And to round out August, I painted the bonus mini from some October past (a blue clear bones wraith) and some rats for the new campaign. The rats look better in hand and the green guck on the base is more effectively icky... but they work on the table!

Here's a handful of speed paints from my Thanksgiving Paint Binge last month. On the left, Sethis the mummy king, on the right one of the Bones mummies of Hakir. In the front, for everyone's pleasure some good old rats.

I'm planning to test some different ways of varnishing Bones, since there is some confusion and some materials seem to dry sticky, or turn sticky after some time. This is going to be a long-term experiment because of the aforementioned change over time. I have a dozen rats and five mummies from the first two Bones Kickstarters which I have painted up in colors known for their shininess (the blacks and reds on the rats) and their matte qualities (the grey bases and the linen color on the mummies). These are super quick paints, just there to test the results. Once they are fully cured I plan to number them under their bases and experiment with different combinations of matte and gloss finish, including at least one unvarnished of each type. I plan to report back after some time has passed.

Supposed to be 6 of these - I dunno where they other 3 went, likely in with the Frostgrave stuff as wandering monsters but anyway, I did a fairly quick paint of the others. Here they are in their natural habitat:

well, it seems to have been not quite a year since my last post, and a bit longer since my last post to Show Off. In the meantime, Nissiana and I have purchased a house, which ate most of the Fall, Winter and Spring, and our Summer has been, per usual, filled with rehearsals and performances. Although I am currently imbroiled with a production of "The Three Musketeers," I've managed to unpack some paint kit and brought it to work. My recent lunch breaks have yielded a passel of kobolds and a pile of rats, both of which will likely lurk the basements of Sharn (or the waste drain of an alchemist's lab, in the case of that one rat) soon enough. Anyway, these are all to a very rough "look ma, I finished!" standard, mostly just to knock some rust off my brushes. Hope you enjoy. Penny bases will be blacked eventually.

Hello all! I've been wanting to paint these Bones Rats ever since I saw the reference picture for them like a year ago. The other day I finally sat down and did it! (All in one sitting to boot!) (Also pictured: 77054: Galladon, Male Wizard and 77049: Arthrand Nightblade, Elf Ranger, of whom I may do their own topic, as their my first mini's of 2016, and I'm quite happy with them! BUT I had more fun playing with the Rats!!) Since I did it all in one night, there was no point in a WIP topic, so if you wanted to see the WIP, click on the Spoiler: And on to the finished rats! We have some Albino rats, some black rats, some plain brown ones, and even some infected rats! Much of the basic style goes once again to the reference image from the Reaper store page. I feel they turned out pretty well! Normally for my tabletop playable miniatures, I'll finish them in a gloss varnish, then go over that with a matte varnish, to give them the best blend of protection and finished style. In this instance however, I opted to just go with a single coat of the matte (brushed on via Liquitex Matte). I know, not as protective, but it should do the trick. Plus even the first coat on 12 rats was surprisingly tricky. I'm glad I'm not a Warhammer player, I do not envy having to paint whole armies! Anyway, time for some fun! And thats the rats! Thoughts, comments?

Lots of critique appreciated! I'd like to get to painting/sculpting display quality one day! I do understand that the blurry photos with a bright as heck light are hard to critique - I'll get better. Leave it to my excitable brain to convince me that I should paint minis as gifts before I've even finished painting my first goblin! The gifts are for my three dearest friends and my husband's D&D group. I would like to have the first 3 done by New Year's, when we meet up again! They'll be really surprised! The guys know that they are getting a painted mini for their gifts, so I've got til Jan/Feb to complete in time for the campaign start. The Gifts: 77016: Rats - Angel Ratties - This friend lost her two furbabies this summer, so I thought I'd make a tribute for her. This was the beginning of the slippery slope... She's so fierce! 02910: Cheetah Girl - Khajiit Marksman - This friend introduced me to Morrowind, and by extension, introduced me to real video games and fantasy worlds outside of books. Morrowind will always be in our hearts! 03445: Drunk Pirate - For their drunken (edit: should be pirate, but drunken works too...) campaign. He'll actually be DM'ing, but I know he'll get a good laugh out of this one, and he'll enjoy still having a mini. 03131: Eric Swiftblade - A good swashbuckler mini for the campaign. 03646: Barnabus Frost - My better half's pirate mini! Quick and easy, and all a bit different.

Finally painted a Bones 2 mini! . . . but it was just a skeleton. Also some Bones 1 rats. Thanks for looking!

These have been setting around waiting for me to paint them for awhile. I already have some normal colored painted rats, so I started tame (light purple instead pink on the white rat, then added stripes), then tried a "plant" rat, and finished with a sunset rat. I didn't spend very long on them. Perhaps an hour total including time debating over colors.

Continuing my March resolutionary challenge, I am doing something about squads, teams or units. As in squads I have started (i.e. done a test piece) but not completed. I seem to have rather a lot of them cluttering up the shelving. As per the resolutionary painting challenge guidelines, I will post them here, and link in my post in the challenge thread. This week has seen little time for hobby, so I “cheated†by doing groups that were extra super fast to finish. First up are two sets of 77016: Rats (6): 12 of them to be precise. These are cute little critters. Until you notice that they are the size of rather large dogs…and they are many, A shotgun only kills one at a time! For some reason, I undercoated 9 if them white, and 3 black. I cannot for the life of me remember why I did this. Based on Mantic 20mm bases.

Some quick jobs I did for my Pathfinder Jade Regent campaign. 77016 Rats: These guys had a lot more highlighting visible, but the brush-on sealer kind of killed it. Maybe I can rescue with a shot of dullcoate? 77024 Goblins: I color coded the goblins to make it easier for me to figure out who was attacking who! They were washed with GW Agrax Earthshade and then I ran out of time, so I sealed them without putting back midtones or highlights. My group didn't seem to mind, though. Sorry the pics aren't the best quality, I haven't made a lightbox yet and I still use my Galaxy S2 to take all my photos!

My second miniature ever, and my very first KS mini! It's just a rat, but I'm quite happy with the results. My WIP is posted here. (Note: the last picture was taken before I'd tidied up around the toes on his back feet; the top 2 pictures are the ones that were taken last.) Huzzah! --OneBoot :D

Well, someone had to do it. Feel free to post your Bones goblins, kobolds, and rats in here. A lot of n00bz people new to miniature painting (including myself) had expressed interest in painting the rats first. They're small, don't have much detail, and are generally non-threatening. Just like a CR 1/3 creature should be. So here are mine. After some attention with my needle files and a good scrub, I started off with some black slobbering. Most of these were done with 9037 Pure Black, the two all-black tail-up rats with 9289 Noir Black, just so I could see the difference. Noir Black is just a tiny, tiny bit lighter than the Pure Black. Someone with more experience could probably explain it better. I can only tell the difference when they're side-by-side. Here's some base coating. Straight 9384 Lonestar Leather on the brown ones. About a 5:2 mix of 9086 Stone Grey : 9289 Noir Black on the bases. Of course, you HAVE to have an albino. I basecoated this one with 9039 Pure White with juuuust a bit of 9286 Punk Rock Pink. I guess we'll see if that was a mistake or not. I also hit the bases with some 9086 Stone Grey. That's as far as I've gotten thus far. I kind of forget that I should be thinning the paint going on after the basecoats. I guess I'll get the hang of this. I'll probably hit the bases with a darker wash, then go for some highlights. Mr. albino will get a closer-to-pure-white coat, and the rest... I'll figure out as I go. Good painting everyone! -Joe
