I’ve decided to start this creepy eye beast monster! So far I’ve primed the main body with Blue Liner and have blocked out the eyes in Rosy Pink, he’s totally going to have pink eyes because that makes me laugh and the rest of him will hopefully end up in shades of purple and blue

Not sure what to make of these. They are decent but I think I might have to redo the large main eyes to do them justice. As you'll see in the Beholder I did from the Wizkids line.

I had a week this summer with the family out of town so I did what any self respecting hobbyist does - broke out the paint! The goal was to try a number of new techniques and get a few minis up to tabletop quality. Overall, some successes and failures. I'm pleased with the way the clay golem and the beholder turned out.

Your move adventurers! YOUR! MOVE!

I finally got some decent brushes in and some nice Reaper paints, which means I no longer have any excuses to procrastinate. That also means it's time to practice everyone's favorite part of mini painting: eyes! And what better practice than an eye beast. Fun fact: the Reaper eye beast has 25 eyes! That's a lot of teeny little highlights to do. Pardon the blurry photos, my phone hates minis. As far as the mad-sciencing goes, well... I figured Damiel would be a good candidate for a bit of head-transplant surgery. His lab coat was perfect for my pathfinder alchemist, but his head just wasn't bird-y enough. I'm thinking of going for a nice clean, white paintjob on the coat and a dark, iridescent head.

Got the eye beast finished! Tried out a triad color scheme, worked pretty well! This is also the first time I got to try out my new light box and a decent camera! I'll have to fiddle with the settings some more I think.

After almost a year, a new miniature arises, it is a Eye Beast by Julie Guthrie (which I was happy surprised to find out a signature in the back). Take some liberty to learn a little about giant eyes with Ms Guthrie herself, and voilá! (it is a shame the varnish seems to not show in the pictures. I used matte for the boddy, and a gloss one for the eyes, this made them shinny and very cool). As always, critiques are welcomed and encouraged.

I packed up all my mini painting gear and took it with me to my sister's for the holidays. My Christmas gift to my niece and her three friends was for each of them to pick a mini out of my box of Bones and pick out something they'd like me to paint. Boy that sounds like something a BBEG would say, "Come here, children! Reach into my Box of Bones and draw forth a miniature monster!" They also picked the colors. So they decided they wanted a doggie, a unicorn, a wizard, and an Eye Beast. One of these things is not like the other. There's probably a future as an evil overlord for that particular child there. With the exception of the unicorn, all the minis were of the size to put on a base, and I managed to discover several things in the process. First, that the wooden disks I'd bought at the craft store when I grabbed my essential mini making kit last year with the intent of using them as bases don't work well with my super glue. The wood goes OH SO THIRSTY and slurps up the glue right into its innards. I put glue on the top, it came out the bottom. Fortunately said wood is so thirsty that it kept all the glue inside itself, rather than affixing a 1 inch round disk to my sister's kitchen table. I'd already gone through one of her walls, I didn't need to add yet more carnage and destruction to the bill. Slapped some Reaper primer on the top of the thing and on the bottom of my Sculpey adornments and that seemed to make the glue work. Tried out Scupley for bases for the first time, nothing complex. Mooshed it onto a wooden disk, texturized it with a bit of packing foam, cooked it in the oven, painted it Grass Green. So the doggie was done first, as there wasn't much of anything to do, with the color of grey being chosen by my niece. I think I used Honed Steel and attempted to drybrush on some lighter grey, but the black wash I used seems to have obscured that. So a simple, plain, common mutt type of doggie. The Unicorn was selected for the poor mite that unfortunately was at home sick. So as little girls are prone to chosing, the once proud beast was to be slathered in shades of purple and pink. Though my only purple is Sparkling Amethyst, which happens to be one of my favorite paint colors. I didn't want to futz with mixing, respecially since my only reds are on the darkish side. Something that will likely be remedied by the arrival of the HD paint sets from Bones II. Not much to see here, Amethyst on the body, the promotional cancer awareness pink for the mane, tail, and... floofy hoof things... I'm not sure if they're feathers or fetters. Used a lighter gray wash to bring out the detail to try and keep the pink from washing out. Did not work quite so well. Maybe a drop of pink in the wash next time might help. So Mr. Wizard here was to be painted blue with a black staff. I thought that looked a bit dull, so I painted the fringe on his robe in yellow. Originally he was Sparkling Blue, but that looked very dull visually, so I had to throw a few coats of HD Dragon Blue from my Bones Learn to Paint Kit over it to liven it up a bit, and used the HD Pale Saffron for the fringe. The staff is pure black, and the face and hands are Tanned Highlight. I didn't even try to paint the eyes, as I was running down to the wire finishing these things. There were bits where his dark blue wash wasn't quite dry when I put on the varnish, so it got a little bit smeared in places. So Mr. Eye Tyrant I think I did the best job on, though he was a pain in the butt. I painted him black first, then put on the Amethyst, and decided that looked too dark. So two coats of white, then the Amethyst again, which looked better. The future villainess decreed that the fearsome beastie was to have green eye stalks/tentacles, which was going well until I accidentally got a bit too much Pig Iron+Viper Green wash in my brush, and had significant spillage all the way down his backside, requiring yet another coat of Amethyst. Pure White toofs, Blood Red eye and tongue, some Pig Iron on his base, as it was rocky and not broccoli like the doggie. He wasn't varnished when pictures were taken, but I put a matte coat on him and then used gloss on his tongue to make it look all gross and drooly and such. And here's some group shots:

I think that'll do for a couple months, hopefully I didn't bombard everyone too hard with my stuff over the last week or so. I tried to space it out. Anyway, here's the remaining mini's from my last photo session... The flesh golem was a super fun paint. Also, ugh for the mold lines. I must stink at seeing these on bones. Never notice one or two 'til I get them posted... Eyebeast was a pretty straight forward job. This lizardman I did not batch paint with his brethren, as it was my first lizardman I've painted and wanted to just focus on figuring out a palette. And I'd like to say last but not least, but really I didn't do too much with the Owlbear, just a quick clean paint job. Didn't even really bother to stuff his cracks with green stuff. Project: Ice Eye Beast Reaper SKU #: 77043 Sculptor: Julie Guthrie WIP Thread So I failed to enter this guy in the contest by a few days, but I still wanted to put him up for everyone to take a gander at. He was pretty rushed (and not my best work) as I was trying so hard to get him into the contest before the deadline, but the basing of him took longer than I expected. Anyhow C&C are welcomed and appreciated.

Here is my submission for the current beauty pageant, a beholder who guard the Waters of Life. And here's the write up my hubby (mostly hubby) and I (I helped!) did for him: Name: Guardian of the Waters of Life (Guardian, for short) Stats Int: 22 AC: -2 Move: 18 HD: 20 Size: 10' Diameter Magic Resist: 60% THAC0: 5 No. of Attacks: 9 Damage: 7 attacks are eyestalks, effects are special; one attack is main eye, effect is special; last attack is bite, damage is 3d10 Special Attacks Eyestalk 1: Submissive Gaze, creatures of 5HD or less meeting this eye's gaze immediately and permanently fall under the control of the Guardian. Creatures of higher HD may save vs spell to negate. If they fail effect lasts for one day. Eyestalk 2: Confusion Zone, creates an area 30' x 30', anyone entering or in this area must save vs spell of become baffled and forget what they were doing for 1d3 days. Arcane spellcasters must make a separate save for each spell memorized or they loose the spell. Zone lasts for 10 minutes. Eyestalk 3: Truth Zone, creates an area 30' x 30', anyone caught in this area will suddenly start telling truths they have hidden. For example, someone who has intentions other than those he's stated to his party members will suddenly blurt out his true intentions. Save vs spell with a -4 to negate this effect. Zone lasts lasts for 15 minutes. Effect lasts for 24 hours after leaving the zone. Eyestalk 4: Repulse Metal, a cone 60' long, 20' wide at the end, any metal, magical or non is thrown back 12d6 feet. No save. Weapons are ripped out of hands, people in armour are thrown, as are people with sheathed weapons, or buckles break. People thrown take 1d6 dmg per 10', save vs breath weapon for half damage. If save is failed, 25% KO. Eyestalk 5: My Friend is my Enemy, creates an area 80' radius around the Guardian, people caught in this area see companions as their most hated enemies and attack them on sight. Save vs spell to negate; the power lasts for 30 rounds/minutes, whether they make the save or not they must save each round or attack their companions. Can only use this ability 1/day. Eyestalk 6: Force Blast, 10' diameter of focused energy. No tricks, no special effects, it just hurts! 5D12 damage... sorry one minor trick... Since it literally comes with the blink of an eye, you have no time to dogde or anything, so there's no save. =( Eyestalk 7: Look at my Garden Grow, used on particularly troublesome people, save vs spell with minus 6 or become a plant of the Guardian's choosing. The only way this can be undone is if the Spirit of the Waters of Life wills it. Usable 1/day. Main Eye: 1st effect is Divine Intent for the Waters of Life. This effect can only be blocked by the divine intervention of a greater god. 2nd effect Flesh to Water, Guardian purifies the creature's body and turns it into more Water of Life. Guardian uses this effect only if the creature's intent for the Water is nefarious. Special Defenses Camouflage: the Guardian's thorny hide and flowered eyestalks allow him to hide amoung the bushes and flowers of the garden, being 97% undetectable. Armour of Thorns: Any creature landing a successful melee attack with weapons shorter than a 2 handed sword automatically take 3d4 damage (3d6 damage is natural weapons like claws or fists). Only takes 25% damage from fire, no damage from cold, plants will not effect or harm him in any way. History: The Guardian is the ancient protector of the Waters of Life. He has guarded the Water so long, and drank so much of the Water that it has changed him. He's lost his natural ability to levitate and has instead grown long plant-like tentacles on which he walks. He doesn't see this as a loss though, since he can move faster than many of his kind now. He views the Waters and the garden which surrounds it as the most beautiful thing, and gives his all to protect it. He cannot actually be killed, despite how hard an adventurer may try. The Guardian believes the Waters he's ingested keep him alive, but it is actually the Spirit of the Waters who chose him and keeps him from dying. Hubby has an evil brain.

Here is my Reaper Beauty Pageant, Creature Challenge entry. (mostly copied and pasted) I'm pleased to present Grathularg of Utgar! Grathularg was an exceptionally large gauth, larger than many of his kind. Utgar found him on Oerth and, before Valkrill could seize it, took the great gauth for himself. Grathularg's stunning eye and fiery blasts have proven useful time and time again, searing Utgar's foes to a crisp. I'm pleased with the basing, while simple addition of rocks to the outside of the base, the little sword was a fun piece, and making the stone more of a "reddish" tint was a lot of fun, as was highlighting it up to lava orange without making it look like lava (re: fire giants). I was pleased with the darker areas looking glossy (inks), simply because the creature should look glossy/gross. There are a lot of eyes on this guy. I'm pleased overall with how they turned out, and I would paint another of these if it came my way Total time spent was about 2 and a half weeks For those wondering, I have had GIMP back on my machine for about 48 hours, no additions, and it's running fairly stable at the moment. C&C welcome!

This is a Reaper Bones Eye Beast, glued onto a Secret Weapons Miniatures base, to which I added some green stuff to work the two bases together into a unified whole. The rest is just paint!

Here's my take on the eyebeast. Did most of it tonight so I could enter it over on caffeineforge.com, anything to help me paint more :P The original plan was making it a whole lot more pink, think Krang. Buuuut.. It's Bones, it's quick, it's done. Happy with the coloration on the central eye though. EDIT: Does this board have a limit on image resolution or something, because it resized it :> Testing: Plus I tried my "light box" for the first time, so any critiques on that part of it is welcome. It's just an unmodded slightly see-through fabric box from Ikea. With LED flashlights.
