We're starting a new D&D 5th Edition campaign soon. I offered to paint up a Dwarf Barbarian figure for one of the players who doesn't paint. His only Dwarf Barbarian figure otherwise would have been the old D&D prepaint one, and if you've seen that, it isn't very impressive. Now I'd been building my Dwarf Wizard for the game, and having realized that there is no casting penalty in 5th Ed for wearing armor you are proficient in, I was painting up an Oathsworn Dwarf fighter type, in scale mail and with a battleaxe (which he's also proficient with). He'll be posted up this weekend, once I get him on a base. So we decided, since the Barbarian is carrying a quarterstaff and has no appreciable armor, that we'd use a Khael as the figure for his Barbarian, to confuse all the baddies! ( Did I mention robinh is GMing this?? ) Overall I'm quite happy with him, considering he's for game play, so tabletop-ish. The mold line on his back I'd have cleaned up if I'd realized how much it would stand out, but I went into with my usual "If Bones and tabletop then don't clean up mold lines" plan.

We are gearing up to start a new D&D campaign at the end of the month. It'll be 5th Edition and robinh is running it. A friend (who doesn't paint) is playing a Dwarf barbarian and I'm running a Dwarf wizard, so I said I could paint up a fig for him too, since the only D&D prepaint Dwarf Barbarian is pretty lame... These are the two figs we came up with, first the barbarian and then my wizard. So yeah, not exactly the norm, but 5th Ed rules are interesting. A spellcaster can cast spells in any armor he is proficient with. And a mountain Dwarf gets proficiency with light and medium armor be default. Also battleaxe... Meanwhile he was planning for his barbarian to be walking around in a big cloak and with a quarterstaff anyway... So we figured this will confuse any intelligent baddies that try to target the wizard first.... Anyway, just roughed in some colours to get started, Had to wait until I got to work to ask him what sort of colours he was thinking for the barbarian, so need to bring in some greens and other nature colours.

I already posted some pictures of my Khael miniature some time ago, but I had a second Dwarf pack from the Kickstarter, so I decided to do the second one slightly different. Looking at the original there were two aspects of the miniature I did not like (I love the miniature anyway :P): The oversized sword and the lack of texture on the staff. Ok, so what to do? First I cut of the staff entirely and replaced it with some wire. I then proceeded to use the dragon head from Galladon's staff (77054) and altered it slightly to allow a more organic fit to the new staff. The idea was that the staff was found as one piece and then carved into a dragon's head. The second step was to remove the sword and resculpt the robes. I then attached some shapes that resemble vials to the now empty space, as well as a feather and a mushroom. After this I covered it with greenstuff to achieve a bulged out look for a knapsack with some of the contents still showing. Some straps and string add interest. I am not sure what colour scheme I will go for this time. I like the one I used, but I also saw a beautiful combination of green robe and blue hat with a reddish-brown beard. Let me know what you think about this conversion.

Next up, my first non-monstrous Bones attempt: Jason Wiebe's Khael Stonekindle. He was part of my fantabulous Secret Sophie haul from LittleBluberry. Thanks, LB! I was so-so level of happy with him, in the end. I attached him to a resin base I got from a local dude who puts out bases and the like under the name "Models and Minis." It wasn't completely perfect, but I thought it made a cool and very fitting base for him. Imagine it'd've been a lot easier, actually, with a mini without a robe hanging down, huh. I hope I am doing this right. I tried to shrink the picture sizes so they weren't massive. Anyway. I was introduced to minis when I asked a gamer friend to teach me how to play D&D. He has thousands of minis. I bought some rats and beetles and he gave me tips on how to get started. I enjoyed that so I purchased some minis, paints, and brushes and started painting. Then I found the forums and I started reading the posts and following the WIP's to learn to get better. I checked out many of the "how to's" and started trying new methods. I think they have helped and I feel I am getting better. So, I am going to post some pictures starting with my earliest stuff (2 months ago) to present (finished last night.) I will post a few photos and make subsequent posts with the rest so I don't jam everything into one post. (If I am posting wrong, please give pointers!)
