I haven't done a WIP in quite a while, and I want to keep committed to clearing my Shelf of Shame for the year. So here's an unfinished mini from my shelf: Reaper 77108: Shadow Dragon: I had assembled & primed this mini before, but hadn't painted it, so it sat on my shelf for a while. So two nights ago, I washed it, sprayed Stynylrez black primer over it, then sprayed a base coat of Burgundy Wine. ...and that's where it stands. Hopefully, I have an opportunity for more work tonight. I don't have any ideas at present for what the color scheme will be, save that I want it to be purple.

Finished the Shadow Dragon from the earlier Bones release. Very Malificent inspired.

SHADOW DRAGON 77108 --------------------------------

I'm playing Hoard of the Dragon Queen, and apparently we need a dragon. So I'm painting the Shadow Dragon that's been in my "Box of 20" unpainted minis as a blue dragon. Last night I boiled, cleaned and glued the wings (because why not? Oh, ok... THAT's why not) and slopped on blue liner/medium. I will probably slop on some more liner to actually line. Colors I'm planning on using. -Interference Blue (Yes, this dragon has been Pingo'd). Skin:Dragon Blue (!), Frost Blue, Blue Flame, Ghost White, Magic Blue (VGC), Denim Blue Plates/Bone: Handle Wood (SW), Bone White (VGC), Pearl White, Creamy Ivory. That may be more than I actually use, though. No mold line prep.

So. I tried painting some minis without WIPs and found myself having a hard time keeping track of what and how much I had done. So I'm back, although these may be sporadic and really slow to update. We'll see. Anyhow, after painting a lot of tiny figures for the January Bones Beauty Pageant, I decided to move in the opposite direction and tackle some of the big figures from Bones I to clear out room for Bones II. So I am painting dragons. Five of them, if you count the Frost Wyrm. Each one gets its own thread, though, since I don't know how I'm going to progress through them. I'm painting each dragon up as inspiration takes me. I thought this one, 77108, the Shadow Dragon, looked slightly aquatic, like a river deity. So I decided to paint it up in cool, watery shades. Maybe like some kind of frog or sea creature. I don't know yet. Anyhow, first I put on a base coat of Reaper's Brown Liner, the paint which sticks to Bones like gangbusters, thanks to Buglips for the discovery, and then a wash of medium blue mixed from Phthalocyanine Blue and a little Titanium White. I don't expect the final dragon to be straight blue like this, but I needed to give all the dragons a distinct color scheme at the start since none of their wings are glued on yet and I need to keep them straight. The other dragons I'm painting concurrently are Deathsleet, Ebonwrath, the Fire Dragon, and the Frost Wyrm.

This is the third of a series of five dragons I painted in the last two months. (Well, technically one of them isn't a dragon.) It's the Shadow Dragon, one of the two smaller (only about elephant size) dragons from the first Bones Kickstarter set, "Here Be Dragons," sculpted by Sandra Garrity. I painted it up not quite knowing where I was going, starting with aquatic thoughts, adding stripes, and then going over the cliff into total madness. WIP thread here.

So this is using 77108: Shadow Dragon! Thanks to Ub3r, he provided me the mini for me to compete in the Sci-fi contest =D Space dragooon! I made up a little story! "The planet V-138, a great swirling gas giant located third in its solar system, was ringed by seven moons. Of these moons, only one was inhabitable with a sentient species populating it. These were the Draconis Galaxis, a winged, four legged alien resembling the mythical dragons on Earth. The Draconis Galaxis is not a dragon, but instead an alien that resembles the mythical dragons known by humans. The ancient tales of dragons are actually envoys of Draconis Galaxis trying to make contact with the humans on Earth, but getting mistaken for great beasts and slain. Their planet is in almost constant darkness, with the 'day' being just a low-light change to the landscape as they orbit their planet, so far from the heat giving sun. The Draconis Galaxis therefore has evolved a great tolerance to cold and excellent eye sight to see through the gloom. The patterns of their wings and sides mimic the bright stars and galaxies visible in the skies of their planet, allowing them to fly unseen by prey below." Pics! Edit: Giving up on the diorama idea. I am really unhappy with the base and I'm not going to worry about it right now. Changed up the story too =P

I've been working on my interpretation of a shadow Dragon amidst some drama concluding with my ex-girlfriend; might explain the combination of colors that ended up going into the figure. I'm not thrilled on the wooden base and will likely be staying away from cheap wooden display bases from Michael's and Hobby Lobby once my dwindling supply has run out. My goal was to show a dragon with dynamic skin that is dramatically and deeply darkened at certain angles and dazzlingly beautiful when struck by light; sort of like the color changing paint on cars. The choice to not do OSL from the dragon's eyes was a tough one, but I opted for no b/c I figured it'd be one of those, "Hey adventurers, aim spells and arrows here in the dark" and would quickly lead to the eradication of the species if the eyes popped too much. Given the size of the dragon I had to adjust to a new set up for photography, not my strength, and not use my trusty light box set up. I'm not thrilled that some of the pictures have some shadowing that isn't paint related but you get the idea. C&C always welcome.
