  1. Finished another from the Layer LTP kit and I am very happy how she turned out, I think this is the best set of eyes and lips I've done so far. I also had one of these moments when I first painted the eyes
  2. Here is part 2 of the LTP Layer up kit with Ingrid. I followed the instructions and then added a little bit extra for 'improvement'
  3. Every now and then, it's fun to give something new a try. In this case, I had a spare Ingrid lying around since hubby didn't want to paint her, and this all started with me trying to show hubby how I do drybrushing... Or at least attempt drybrushing, since I'm not all that good at it. Thankfully, it helped him pick up the basics alongside what was written in the LTPK Core manual... Then it turned into a downward, flaming spiral, but arguably, in this case, flaming is good. ^_^;;;; I wondered, is it possible to drybrush an ENTIRE mini... And even more so, can I do it with just FOUR paints, where two of them had technically already been chosen since I'd started on her cloak, AND none of them could technically be from the same colour group as another (so no reds if you have an orange or pink, etc)? And even more so, using JUST the #2 flat brush I had picked out before for the drybrushing? Well, uhmn.... First and foremost, it was fun, and that was the point of it all for me. Just sit down, have fun, and see where things go. In short, I'm calling it a draw - I've picked up on a few more things as basics to work from, and I'm fairly proud of that cape, doubly so since it wasn't anywhere near as long to do as other techniques. Does it sell it as well as layering does? Nope, but I'm okay with that! Anyways, onwards to the results of some experimentation to see just what my own limits could be with such a technique, and what kind of colours I can come up with using just 9417 Void Blue, 9432 Desert Sand, 9600 Heart Throb Pink, and 29833 Ash Grey.... For the record, the two I had started with on the cape were Heart Throb pink as well as Ash Grey, since the Ash Grey was used to initially demonstrate what I was doing for drybrushing, and then the Heart Throb Pink was chosen as something that would very much so stand out so he could watch every stroke of the brush... I wound up liking such, and so rolled forward to do the entire mini with drybrushing. Oh, right, I'm not counting the primering of the mini, which was done with Grey Liner.... ~_^ The story I'm going with is that it's a cursed gem that steadily corrupts and takes over one's body and soul, and that she's pretty much completely overtaken by it... Or something, as she's kind of a pink glowing eyed dusty grey skin coloured gnome now, with gear that hopefully looks fairly dated / well aged....
  4. It's been a slow few weeks painting wise because work wise has been crazy but I almost finished with the LTPK2. Here is Ingrid. I am pretty pleased with her and feel like I learned a LOT. She also has the best eyes I've been able to manage thus far. Everything else either gets just a black dot or no eyes at all. I apologize for the bad pictures, I am working on getting a proper background set up but for right now I just hold them up to the light and take a photo and hope it comes out well.
  5. After converting Ingrid to better match the character she's going to represent (giving her a bow and rapier), last night I got to painting. I started with thinned down brown liner, then went straight to the eyes with Linen White. Surf Aqua was used for her irises, and brown liner for the pupil. I painted her flesh with a 2:1 Warrior Flesh: Linen White mix. Her hair is Blond Shadow with highlights of Tanned Leather. Her lower lip is a 1:1 blend of her flesh tone with Old West Rose. The armor, gloves, boots were painted with a thinned Rich Leather. The bow and scabbard are painted with a mix of Brown Liner and Rich Leather. Her cloak was painted with Mountain Stone, and then washed with a 1:2:2 mix of Grey Liner: Mountain Stone: Flow Improver. Because I want to bring her to game on Wednesday, and don’t think I’ll get any more time to work on her between now and then, I picked out the end of the scabbard and the tips of the bow with Dragon Bronze, and gave the base a quick wet brush of Redstone Shadow. Not bad for a night's work...
  6. The second mini from the Layer Up! Learn to Paint Kit, Ingrid the Gnome Thief: A fun little mini. She taught me that I love to overdo shadows. This is very evident on her cape, though glazing did help a little bit. On the bright side, the sculpt has some big, expressive eyes, and I think both came out halfway decent for a change. This one has a fun base, as well. Lots of details to pick out, and the instructions have a neat combo for painting mossy patches that I’ll have to steal for future use. Feedback is appreciated!
  7. I've had these pics on my camera for a few days, and keep forgetting to upload them... Keep getting distracted by other projects, but nothing wrong with that I say... ^_^;;;;; These photos were taken using my previous way of doing things, and I definitely prefer the "newer" way even if it means a bit more work up front, but there's less editing, and my kit lens is a LOT easier to work with for such up close pictures. Kind of can't wait to get that Olympus 60mm f2.8 macro that's on my wishlist, but right now it's a debate between miniature supplies and camera gear, and the camera gear isn't currently on sale, plus we really could use a wider selection of paints in the house, so..... Ingrid was definitely an.... Interesting challenge to paint, to say the least. She has a great deal of smaller details to her, aaaaaand she's pint shot glass sized, which adds to things. Interestingly enough, the biggest issue I kept running into was with her gloves, boots, and especially belt. Cloak also gave some issues, even having me somewhat frustrated at first that my initial shadow layer looked a LOT like vertical red and black stripes, I kept it as it was, and added additional layers on, which seems to have partially corrected itself, but looking at the photos, at the right angles it... Still kind of shows that way. Oh well, we learn as we go, right? This was also the first mini that I attempted something resembling eyes, and I did my best to have it look like she was looking right at the gem itself. It took a few tries, but I managed to get some sort of hazel-brown eye going, although with just the one colour hazel eyes have (not the brown-green mix).
  8. I bought the Learn to Paint Kit 2 some months back and I finally got to paint the 3 minis. I learned a lot from the techniques in the kit and overall I am happy with the results. Group Shot Anirion Ingrid Hajad C&C welcome!
  9. Hello all! I got a lot of advice on the last mini painted and I tried to incorporate it into this one. This one is Ingrid the Gnome from the second Learn to Paint Kit. I really wasn't pleased with how she was turning out, but I think I salvaged it a bit in the end. This is my 4th mini, and it was my first attempt at eyes; it was frustrating and horrible. I tried several techniques, and it took about 4 tries to get them to the state they are in. I stopped fussing with the details, particularly on the base because frankly, I just want to move on. Hopefully it's not a step backwards. Comments and Critiques are greatly desired. Thanks! PS: Once again, I apologize for the poor pictures. I'm going to build a light box soon.
  10. I decided to flip through my ReaperCon purchase of the Learn to Paint Kit 2: Layer Up! and was inspired to actually get started... This is the result of a couple of hours of effort. Still working on the shadow stages, but so far I'm a fan of both the instructions, the paints, and my work. I'm not a fan of the brush that came with the kit. According to the instructions, it's supposed to be a size 1, it's a size 0. Not that big a deal... but the fact that it's bristles are splayed out like an abused drybrush? Does not match the quality of the brush I bought at ReaperCon and have been using regularly since.
  11. The Little People January Bones Beauty Pageant inspired me to try to paint some of my halflings and gnomes. This one, 77167: Ingrid, Female Gnome, is now done. I tried to do some OSL to make it look like the stone was really glowing, including between her fingers. I painted the base with lights and shadows. I didn't add anything to her except paint.
  12. A couple tabletop painted Bones I finished last weekend. 77033: Callie, Female Rogue 77167: Ingrid, Female Gnome Ingrid aspires to join the No Pants Gang.
  13. Here is Sammie Two-Drinks. An NPC for my game. I really appreciate all of the feedback I've gotten from people so far. In the short time I've been participating on this forum, I really feel I've started to improve. Now, I need to go paint a bunch of monster as fast as possible. I've spent too much time on Sammie. WIP: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/53732-ingrid-female-gnome-convesion/
  14. I'm gonna try to do a WIP and implement some of the excellent advice I got in my "show off" thread. I run a D&D 4e game for some friends. Since I like painting minis I'm trying to populate their world with a variety of characters. I don't want their poor characters to live in a world where everyone is always running around with swords drawn, so I wanted to add some unarmed NPCs to the campaign. I was thinking about this the other day, and one of my players who is (among other things) a photographer. He had been working doing party pictures and he told me the story of a comely young woman named Sammie who always seemed to have 2 drinks whenever she was captured in his photographs. Reference photos linked below. Warning: these photos are PG-13, but there are some R-rated photos on the site linked. http://jedsblog.com/galleries/let_go_august/content/_1000721_large.html http://jedsblog.com/galleries/2011_indy_500/content/_MG_5149_large.html http://jedsblog.com/galleries/letgo_may/content/_MG_3096_large.html http://jedsblog.com/galleries/fri_13/content/_MG_3560_large.html She was then given the nickname Sammie-Two-Drinks. I thought it would be fun to introduce Sammie-Two-Drinks as a character in our campaign. And the Ingrid I received in my bones Christmas stocking seemed like a good candidate. I used the photos above as "inspiration" more than strict references. Here she is post-conversion, base coated and lined. I'm still struggling a bit with the close up photography but there's not too much detail work done yet. I flipped her arm around and cut off her sword. Then I rolled out a tube of green stuff and fashioned it into a mug. The idea being that the hilt of the sword would become the handle of the mug. I struggle quite a bit with the green stuff, and finally got it "close enough." I also applied a little green stuff to the seam in her right elbow where I reattached her arm. this ended up not being as smooth as I would have liked after the GS cured, so I went back over it with some extra heavy gel. She had what appeared to be a gem in her left hand. I added a neck to it and tried to cut down the sharp edges some. I think it reads like a bottle now.
