These are two copies of the Reaper Bones Large Earth Elemental 77185, sculpted by Kevin Williams. I saw someone, I can’t recall who, paint up, it might have been one of these, like cooling lava which I thought was lovely, so I wanted to give it a try. I painted the lava version very quickly, in a few sessions: A layer of butter-yellow intensified with yellow glazing, then laying on pure black paint rather thickly, then some washes of Quinacridone Magenta and some fiddling with that and yellow on the gems. The rock version I painted v-e-r-y slowly, in many layers over time, often with whatever paint was left on my palette from other paintings. I’m not sure when I started it, but since I haven’t painted any minis at all for the last year, it’s been some time. I thought it interesting how very different a sculpt can look depending on how you paint it.

Finished this a few days ago. One thing I have to say. I've looked at a lot of people's online before doing mine. And not to be rude but I don't like any of theirs. Nobody seemed to try and do a theme to the rocks that location wise made more sense for the fossilized dinosaur on its back. Lots of people made gems and all kinds of other things. You wouldn't find those things around fossil remains. So this was my attempt to have something more surreal and actually include the fossils better and since I collect museum quality fossils apart from painting minis. I've seen enough to try my hand at what it would look like more on an excavation site. :)

77185: Large Earth Elemental Kevin Williams This guy has been awaiting proper completion for about a year. Every time I had grey paint left over, I added it to him. I found him a struggle to complete because of his size and because of all the mold lines. Every time I turned him around I found more that I missed when prepping him. I finally gave up on trimming them and just gave him a proper base and a finished paint job. It's still a speed paint, but at least he's done and ready for use in my D&D game. Only 30 projects left on my shelf of shame!

So I decided to do some elementals real quick. I gave them base coat of matte medium - primer for earth, because base coat. Then I attempted the yellow-ning. First it looked good, so I tried to add a little more, mixed with orange tint, and ugh. I think I'd recommend doing outsides red, and then use a yellow ink w/medium as "dry" brush to pick out details. It won't look right, but a lot of the translucents really seem to be table ready.

I really like these elementals' pose and sculpting. So much more imposing and dynamic compared to most other elementals I have seen. Picking flowers... There are many more pictures at my blog Water Elemental was done as follows: first, an undercoat of clear matte varnish. This is key! I used Army Painter Anti Shine spray. Then some vallejo blue ink and when dry several light drybrushings with progressively lighter shades of pale blue up to almost pure white. Then some ancient citadel turquoise glaze here and there, all topped off with gloss varnish. I did some color shade variations all over this one, but I think maybe the gloss varnish fuffs it up so this can't really be seen in the pictures. Fire Elemental was done as follows: First the undercoat of clear matte varnish. Then several abortive attempts with yellow ink which did just not work until I abandoned that idea and undercoated it with three coats of opaque white. After that successive layers of heavy to light drybrush with bright yello - golden yellow -dark pink - dark red brown and finally black. It is important to let the colours dry a bit between coats to avoid tearing off the layer below when drybrushing. Finish with dotting in some blues for the eyes. When painting fire like this, it looks pretty terrible up to the dark red brown layer. Suddenly, it looks pretty sweet indeed. Earth Elemental was done as follows: black undercoart, then heavy drybrushed coat of dark green gray, followed by lighter coats of yellow sand and light grey white. A stone combo that I think works so much better than just shades of grey, grey and grey. I probably should have varied it more with different types and colours of rock represented. but I just could not be bothered as I just wanted it done at this point. I need my Bones 3 shipment to complete the set! When O when will it arrive? Attack of the speed painting.. Only took me 2.5 hours x.x Not so speedy. My favorite part is his booty!

I saw this guy in the store awhile back, and I had to paint him. But he seemed too big to be Large, so I decided he had to be Huge. Being Huge (and top-heavy), I also figured that he needed a bigger base to reflect a 15x15' Space. In retrospect, I wish I'd done him with a circular base to have a little less negative space, but overall it was a fun flock experiment. :-)

A couple more firsts on this guy with the gems and the base. And I had a lot of fun painting him. Enjoy edit: So I have to admit I got a little exited playing with new toys last night and rushed the picture process. But I just wasn't happy with how dark they turned out. After another read through of the Miniatures Photography 101 I think I did a much better job today. Now You can see all the detail good and bad!

I painted a few of these awhile ago - the fire elemental and the water elemetals. The earth elementals I painted up this past week for my Friday game. Sorry about the insane number of pictures..

EDIT: I APOLOGIZE FOR NOT PUTTING THE PIX IN SPOILER TAGS...NOT SURE HOW TO. Good evening everyone! These are the first miniatures I have ever painted. I picked up the Bones Learn to Paint Kit a month ago or so and painted two of the 3 minis that came with it (the skeleton came broken) and then decided to pick up 3 more off of ebay and have painted 5 total to date. I was looking for a hobby and I stumbled across this site and read everything about minis and what not and decided to give it a try. I added the model #'s in the topic for the ones I remembered. The first mini I started with was the Armored Knight, followed by the Orc, then the Large Earth Elemental, Hell Hound and then finally the Pathfinder Dragon. Hoping to get some feedback on any/all of them as it would be much appreciated. Below are some pics, both with flash off and flash on for comparison. The only paints I used where the ones that came with the painting kit...some I mixed together or thinned out etc... I don't have a table to paint on (I'm not painting on my polished coffee table! nor do I have a fancy white background (or rather just some white paper =P) so I used a white shirt for the backdrop. Some things I noticed after I took the pics and along the way, these of which I still need to do, are: Paint the teeth on the Orc, paint the claws and wing bones of the dragon, fix the bone colored mark on the Hell Hound's left rear leg, eyes on the armored knight. Anyways, hope their good!

I don't want to lose momentum after finishing the previous WIP project, I'm starting another right away. This time, I'm doing something "smaller": the Bones Large Earth Elemental. Just to get started, I attached the arms and head to painting sticks (repurposed chopsticks) with a hot glue gun, and then primed them with a spray of thinned FolkArt Multi-Surface Acrylic (Bark Brown). While that dried, I turned to choosing a color to paint it. My paint box contained both Redstone Highlight and Redstone Shadow, and I thought it would be neat to paint the elemental to look like he was made from desert rocks. But I didn't have the Redstone mid-tone. I debated how long it would take to order that color and get it in the mail; I didn't want to wait, so I gave up the idea and painted it grey instead. No, I lie. I just mixed the two together to make a mid-tone and based the elemental with that: (Wow, the fluorescent lamp sure made that color look pink!) And that's it for tonight!

Large Fire Elemental - added darker colors to the base, took the colors from orange red to deep red. I had worked on it earlier this year but wasn't happy with it, just exhausted with working on it. I tried some blending but not conistantly across the whole model. Large Earth Elemental. this was alot of fun working on different types of rocks. the amythists came from a painting tutorial on CMON but the last step was simply : applied glazes of previous colors in different amounts on each facet. before that it was very helpful and specific. further details in my WIP thread 77164: Elliwyn Heatherlark, Gnome Bard simple halfling/gnome woman. quick an easy, except for the freehand shield. cloak of stars rat man, modified GW clanrat. I use a lot of ratmen in my D&D games. book and arm sculpted out of green stuff. guess thats if for this month. The Earth Elemental was at least 5 painting days. I also have the fighter I modified to wield a flail, its for another player in my PF game. He wanted balck and red armor - im doing red NNM. so far its only base coated. may add a pic later.

Greetings my friends! I started this pair alongside the Wraith Harvester and Reven Beastman at Starbucks a week and a half ago. I just finished this pair up and thought I'd post pictures; they're larger and just took my time to complete but both are rough speed paints. The Spirit of the Forest was originally going to be a fall motif, but I decided that I wanted to do a warm to cool contrast so you'll note that on the upper levels he's receiving some warmth and down towards the earth there are much cooler tones. The 14 colors I used were: Red Shadow, Splintered Bone, Brown Liner, Worn Navy, Brilliant Green, Redstone, Gory Red, Driftwood, Ultramarine Shadow, Fresh Blood, Tanned Leather, Faded Khaki, Auburn Shadow, Rusty Red. Total paint time about 4.5 hours. For the Large Earth Elemental I just wanted to make him cold, snowy and icy; this provided for a nice light to dark contrast. I actually had to pick up some fresh rock candy crackle paint at Hobby Lobby for the cracked ice. The 8 colors I used were: Worn Navy, Brown Liner, Red Shadow, Brilliant Green, Splintered Bone, Sapphire Blue, Light Blue, Pure White. I like elementals to have empty sockets/no eyes so those were left intentionally dark. Total paint time/ice/snow included about 4 hours.

So here's Rocky in all his based and painted glory. Ready to say 'Hulk Smash' if only he had vocal chords, or you know, lungs. Comments and critiques desired. Don't be gentle, but do be polite.

Here is the first shot of a WIP for the Large Earth Elemental. He is based as is my standard practice as well as being undercoated. The first coat of paint was a thin coat of GW XV-88 this is to be kept for some of then boulders the rest will be a combination of rock colours found naturally. Comments and suggestions welcome.

So, back in this post, I mentioned I might paint another Earth Elemental, using the World of Warcraft Infernal as inspiration. Of course once I thought of it I couldn't resist, so I picked up another 77185, and painted it along with four miniatures from the WoW board game. It didn't work out as easy as I thought it would. The original plan was to paint the model in lime green, and then just dry brush the stone color over top. The dry brushing covered up most of the lime green, so I went back over the cracks with more green paint. I then hit some of the crytals with white high-lights intending them to look like quartz, as the WoW infernals don't have any gems or crystals sticking out of them. I didn't like the result, so hit them with some green ink. I then painted each of the board game miniatures the same way, but changed up the glowing color for the cracks to match the color of the plastic. The game differentiates the monsters based on color. Here is a group shot to show the size difference. So overall I'm happy with the result, and I think the Reaper mini will still work fine as an earth elemental. And it was a nice break from painting [REDACTED]. Maybe I'll get around to finishing her soon and post some pictures.

After finishing painting over 100 Bones miniatures (not to mention my Dwarven Forge Game Tiles as well), I suppose it is probably time I started sharing them. First up is one I am very satisfied with and was happy to support when it was an Add-on for the first Bones Kickstarter. Here is the Large Earth Elemental, 77185, from different angles because the figure is full of details: And here is the Spirit of the Forest, 77184, again, several angles because there are a lot of little details: I had fun painting these two and picking out the amazing little details on each one. So I don't know if it was the long, snowy winter or the Disney movie, but I've been on an arctic kick lately. Here is the Bones Earth Elemental 77185 done up like an ice golem. The bright lights seem to have washed out some of the more subtle shading, but then it's supposed to be mostly white anyway. I tried to cover the dinosaur fossil with snow, not entirely successfully. I used the Reaper Blue Liner as a primer, so I can confirm the blue works as well as the brown does. I think I'll get another one of these and paint it up like a World of Warcraft Infernal. Good thing Bones are cheap. In my last post I mentioned I was working on some LotR elven spearmen; here they are. They are about half metal and half Finecast; the Finecast is easy to spot due to the bent spear shafts. The last blue highlight didn't blend as well as I'd like, but they'll do.

Ok, I'll probably play with the white highlights on the base- I think they're too wide to carry the effect I want. And I may still glaze the lava bit. I'm just tired of orange. If I have to use any more orange anytime soon, I might scream. Speaking of orange... I base coated him in walnut brown, then gradually worked up to the bright colors. I used blood red, saffron sunset, sun yellow and pure white for the elemental's glowing effect, and a bit of marine teal on the body to give some more contrast. The base I'd started in those colors, but it just wasn't working, so I upped the brightness using clear red and lava orange. The rocks have a touch of carnival purple and some pure white mixed with walnut brown. I sculpted the base using a combination of greenstuff and sculpey. I was trying for a splash effect, as if the elemental had just pounded his fist into a stream of lava. Oh- the Wip is here. C&C always welcome! Enjoy!!

Since seeing the Bones Elementals as an add-on option, I have been plotting and planning my very own magma elemental! Whooo!!! Also since I got 2 sets, I'll probably do a traditional earth elemental to satisfy our Druid's tendency to hang around in wild shape... unless I can talk the DM into allowing a magma elemental... inspiration: Anyway- prepped figure by washing with soap and water and trimming mold lines. used sanding needles for hard to reach areas. Put on a basecoat of walnut brown (see- don't you just love walnut brown!?) and started in on some simple shading with blood red and saffron sunset. I originally intended to use carnage red but grabbed the wrong bottle. Oh well. Blood red it is! I intend to really make this guy glow. Anyone who wants to play is welcome! Elemental party time!
