77191: Hydra Bones Sandra Garrity I did this one as a speed paint for a D&D game at the last minute, and then he didn't have a base for the next two years. Well, now he's done and has a base and is just waiting for his next chance to eat adventurers. 33 Projects left on the shelf of shame! And I have the day off work tomorrow so more to follow!

Decided to have some fun today as I was digging thru my figures pulling out stuff I am going to put in the BOGW. I ran across the hydra and remembered that next weekend I planned on throwing my d&d players up against one. 3-4 hours later I have a painted up hydra on a scenic base from secret weapon miniatures. Added some water effects for a tiny swampy pond beneath it. I’d love to hear your C&C!

I wasn't originally planning to do a WIP of this guy, but after struggling with super glue and vaseline and half-cured greenstuff, I thought that it might be wise to post about it and learn all the ways I'm going about this wrong. I decided to swap two of the heads because I thought it would look more balanced, and I also decided to add wings because why not? Then, because it totally looked like I'd just hacked stuff apart and sorta glued it back together (because...that's what I did), I decided to break out my increasingly stiff greenstuff. I didn't want to wait for the GS to cure before putting brown liner on, which as you'll see later was a mistake. :P I made a sort of half-hearted attempt at scales in a couple of spots, but really all I wanted to do was smooth the join between the neck and head, so I basically just tried to smush it as flat as I could and feather the edges a bit. And here's the wings, which were 'voluntarily' donated by my extra Rauthuros. I wasn't quite sure what I was doing, so I just cut them apart and sorta...glued them on. Pinning didn't even occur to me until after the glue had already set (and I used a fair bit). I did try to scrape off the Brown Liner where I'd planned to join them to the body, but being Brown Liner, it rather stubbornly resisted both my fingernail and my sanding needle, so I shrugged and stuck them on anyways. I originally was going to just smooth the super obvious place where the wings met the body, but after I'd poked and prodded and squashed the GS into place, I decided to get...creative. That there is my super-rough first attempt at scales. It looks pretty horrid close-up, but I'm hoping that I'll be able to disguise some of that with paint. At least this way, there's some texture there that I can play with. I am actually quite pleased with how the areas closest to his spine look, though! If you squint, they look kinda scale-like! And here's the final result: The wings are lopsided, but I can't do anything about that now, and this is a just-for-fun piece anyways, so I'm not going to stress about it (though it will bug me until the end of forever, lol). The next step, after all the GS cures, will be to scrub him off again, because vaseline and paint don't mix well. And I totally did the intelligent thing in slathering him in brown liner BEFORE I'd done the conversions; there's vaseline all over that now. Huzzah! --OneBoot :D

Greetings! I've had this Reaper Bones Hydra (77191) sitting around for quite a while now, waiting for me to pluck up the will & time to paint it. I'm quite a slow painter by nature & I had set myself a rule that where all my present & future Bones minis are concerned, I wasn't going to worry about removing mould lines (I love Bones but I find this particular job is a nightmare!) or going into too much painting detail but this all fell by the wayside in the end! Anyway, here it is. Following the Hydra's mythology, I've gone with aquatic colours, the base was created using Basius's Dungeon base stamp, I made a point of putting one foot lower on the steps as the front legs were a bit uneven (even after the hot & cold water torture method!). Comments & critiques are always welcome, thanks for looking!

This one was painted last year, shortly after painting part of my Dwarven Forge Caverns Game Tiles with a lava caverns paint scheme. I have started organizing my pictures and decided to post here in Show Off. I painted the Hydra using the same Pokorny Paint colors as I used for the lava caverns scheme on the Caverns tiles such as seen in the next pictures. And now for some pictures of the hydra by itself from different angles:

Another bigger mini from me. I'm still getting used to painting miniatures this size. I didn't really go for anything too wild here though. A pretty traditional color scheme, I think. Still trying to nail something I'd call tabletop quality, though I think this fits the bill okay. I like how my serpent-eye effect turned out. I think if I painted another one of these guys I'd do something different with the coloration, maybe duller scale colors, as if he sunned himself a lot or something. I also wouldn't have assembled it first (I bought him a long time ago and put him together and just started painting him the other day) as the inner heads especially were a huge pain to get to. Lesson learned! Don't assemble miniatures with enclosed space before applying paint. Anyway, enjoy!

This is yet another Bones plastic figure, 77191 Hydra by Sandra Garrity. I like Garrity's work, and this is no exception, though I feel that it would be more useful as a gaming miniature if its pose were more compact, more curled around on itself. That would probably require that it be moulded with one or two more pieces, but it's already a multi-piece model so that wouldn't be a big problem — at least, not from the end-user's point of view.

I found my little red fan, which means combined with the fact that it snowed today means that the upstairs is no longer a thermonuclear hellhole, and thus I can paint minis again, yay! Since I'm a bit shaky, I figured that I'd get a nice big couple of figures for a couple of board contests underway. So of the Halloween-themed contest, I've got the Flesh Golem and the Undertaker, and since I'm a bit shaky in the hands and have painted all of one human mini thus far, that narrows it down for me. And for the Year of Giants contest, well, why not paint the biggest figure I own at the moment, the Hydra. HAIL HYDRA! *reflexive salute* I also super glued together a couple of my minis that needed it since I had the glue out for the Hydra, and thus as a result if anyone needs any burglaries committed in the next few days, I'm currently lacking fingerprints. So I didn't get much done before my back started being achy, just get down a base layer of Ginger Cookie. Mostly because the Hydra *reflexive salute* took a good three hours and a quarter bottle of paint. Why Ginger Cookie? Because I have about six bottles of the stuff from Xmas. Mr. Five Heads gulped down a huge amount of the stuff, and was rather unhelpful with having tiny white specs appear in his scales every time I changed viewing angle on him. I'm not going to be slathering on a solid coat of paint onto a such a large and scaly beast any time soon. The dried glue on my hands also managed to get stuck to the dry paint, resulting in my removable of a few small chunks of paint. Not only do I have no fingerprints, the tips of my fingers now look like they're rotting off. I'm thinking of painting the flesh golem in ashen blue, with this being Minnesota, a hypothermic quasiundead just makes sense. For the ginger cookie addict? Not sure yet, Maybe keep with the Xmas goodness by splashing some Xmas Wreath over the ginger cookie. I think it'd be nice to have a Tiamat-hydra, but I'm not sure my limited experience will be up to the task of trying to blend five colors down into brown or try and make nice neat stripies down the back.

First up is my bones hydra. This guy was supposed to be for last year's Dragon challenge, but I'm a platinum member of the Procrastinator's of the USA club. I wanted him to be a desert dragon and have lizardy patterns. I quite like how he turned out. Next up I have a couple of my translucent fire walls. One is from the kickstarter, then I bought a set of three more so we can have fire everywhere! Next up is Talisha Highbringer. She's for my character in our spelljammer campaign. Her name right now is Experiment 143, because she can't remember anything from her past. She has a fun alternative form, a bionoid, which I've been working on. But here's her elfy form. I love the blue! And lastly, and pretty proudly, here's Boz, another character from out spelljammer campaign. He's a Sea Hawk. Hubby's buddy loves the Sea Hawks, can you tell? I think it's a GW sculpt. It had a weird face thing on the side of it's head which I sculpted feathers over and gave him a lower beak. The arm is from... something else. And the wings are from the feathered wings pack from reaper, with feathers sculpted by me between the wings. Oh, and I also sculpted the feet in too. Quite pleased with him over all

Here’s my current progress on a diorama I’m building, starring the Bones Hydra! Some backstory… "In the great grassland plains in the south, where immense herds of hooved beasts roam and mighty elephants traverse the sea of grass and islands of forest, there lives a mighty predator. This is the Plains Hydra, a tawny-gold monster that manages to thrive in the savannah. It relies on ambush to capture prey, hiding in the tall grass and waiting for them to graze nearby. As it is quite a large animal, it often has to evacuate a pit in the soil to help hide its bulk, with its heads stretched out and hidden in the grass, waiting…sometimes for days…before prey wanders within reach. With its stubby forelegs more suited for digging and supporting the weight of its heads, it cannot pursue prey very well. So if it misses its initial lunge into the herd, it could possibly wait for weeks before it has another chance. Because of this, all five heads attack at once, increasing its chances that at least one snapping maw will make a kill. Often the herd is so confused and startled that the victim would run away from one head straight into another. It has a powerful sense of smell and will take advantage of any carrion it scents on the wind" And there you have it!
