  1. In the Storm King's Thunder campaign I'm playing in we've had 2 encounters with an ancient blue dragon named Iymrith. I don't have a painted blue dragon... And my very pregnant DM isn't going to get one bought and painted before we need her, so... Digging through my minis, I figured Narthrax was as close as I've got. It was going to be blue anyway (or dessert sands brown) so that was my top choice. I also thought about the wizkids dragons, but the FLGS only had the green, and I wasn't all that impressed with the sculpt. I'd rather drop $30 on another Narthrax if I'm gonna paint a brown one in the future. Tonight I pulled her out, scrubbed her down, and started working on her base. She could probably for on a smaller base, but with her wingspan, and the fact that she's an ancient dragon, I figure she deserves it. and the cork will give her some extra height. It helps her look even bigger as compared to Blightfang! More to come!

    77279 - Narthrax in black

My most ambitious project to date, Narthrax was a fun little challenge for me over the last couple of weeks. My son wanted him to be black, so after I based him in Stormy Grey, I mixed up 3 parts each Adamantine Black and Imperial Purple with a single drop of Pure Black (then repeated it several times!). For the undersides of the wings, I replaced the Imperial Purple with Ruby Red - and did the same for his main back-spikes and horns. I went too far down his tail with the reddened segments and after realizing that it just didn't look right, thought I had successfully covered it up - but from the backside picture, I can see a distinct reddish hue to the top of the upper tail.. I also think I need to touch up the foot-pads and perhaps the trailing-edge bone tips on the wings with - they looked nice with just the Stormy Grey, but the camera is making me second guess that thought..
  3. Hello, This is my first post in the work in progress and on the Reaper Forum in general. Though I have been a ghost in the Forum watching. I am still fairly new to the hobby and I had started painting about two years ago. However, a house fire at end of last July ended up basically halting my being able to paint until just recently. Point of interest, I was working on Khanjira when it happened and a falling ceiling will destroy him. The worst house damage was in my bed room right above my hobby area. But I have finally been able to get back to painting and I have really liked Narthrax for a while. So, I have created this work in progress to help keep me motivated and moving. I have the trouble of over thinking/researching things and never starting them. So I am hoping this helps. The plan is to have it done by the end of this next week. If I am not feeling like moving on to another mini I am then thinking of basing it with a desert scene and it attacking a caravan. I have the camel from Conan and really would just need a merchant like figure. So I have given him a nice bath and he is now drying. My plan is to paint him up like our bearded dragon, Albus (or according to my three year old, Albus Lizard). Tried to get him posing on an out cropping of rocks but he is being lazy. The next step will be Brown Liner and then I will check it for mold lines again. I was very impressed with how little mold lines were present and I am sure I have missed some.

    Narthrax - 77279

This took way more time than I thought it would. I probably should have done a step by step, but after a couple of early shots, I didn't remember to take any others. Probably because I was painting and assembling while painting three other models. I forgot how much paint these big models eat up and Bones seem to want even more. This was one of several color schemes I have floating around my head for dragons. I would like to try some of the others, but maybe on another dragon model. Love this sculpt though, absolutely sinister looking and a must have when I was cherry picking models during that Kickstarter. Brightness could not be helped, either it was too dark or too bright when taking pics, but I figure these are good enough for "Show and Tell." Hope you enjoy!
  5. I made a thing today... Iffin' I wasn't a Griffin this would have to be classified as a Frogcident. I will add part numbers to the tags if anyone can ID some of them.

    Narthrax the crimson!

After a couple of days intense, yet incredibly satisfying painting, I have finished this peice of work, the mighty Narthrax! I have painted him in a fairly traditional scheme for a Red Dragon, and he is going to be used in a pathfinder campaign I plan on starting fairly soon. Anyway, onto the pictures! The one thing I am not certain on is the stonework for his base, the rest, I think looks pretty good.. Hopefully the pictures will show that. My lighting at the moment is horrendous.

    Narthrax, Reaper Bones

This is Narthrax from Reaper’s Bones series. Hate is a pretty strong word so I’ll just settle with saying that I strongly dislike huge+ miniatures. They take forever to finish and use up much more paint than I think. They are unwieldy forcing me to awkwardly hold them in my apparently acidic fingers, stripping the paint on tiny strategic areas. All and all Narthrax has been a pain to paint. I hit quite a few walls and restarted I think three or four times.I shudder to think how I’m going to finish Cthulhu, Khanjira, Kaladrax and all the others. One at a time I guess… But enough of the cons, now for the pros! * Eventhough Narthrax didn’t end up as I planned it in my head, I’m still pleased with the end result. I think the color scheme works. * I’m really happy with how the teeth and the eyes ended up * My first finished dragon! As for the mouth, I tried to shamelessly steal trodax brilliant paintjob (seen here: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php/topic/69676-narthrax/)but with cold instead of fire. It didn’t quite work since I’m not up to the task of blending but it still looks kind of nice :)

    77279: Narthrax ( Copper )

WIP thread: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/60469-77279-narthrax-copper/ My copper dragon Palorforthen, who I painted Narthrax up as, is a very different sort of story. In my world, dragons do not have alignment based on color. They're good or evil by their own personality, not the color of their scales. Dragons also are not sorted by 'blue is lightning, red is fire', either, but rather into elemental categories of Fire, Air, Water, Earth, and Arcane. Arcane dragons are the strongest, for they are naturally gifted at magic and can use a wider variety of attacks than the others, who are limited to their breath weapon attack. In this world, a large section of the main continent is ruled by a mated pair of large purple Arcane dragons, who are quite evil and power hungry and extort the smaller and weaker dragons living within their borders. The female of the pair, her first clutch of eggs hatched and were playing at the front of the lair, were stolen by thieves while the male was gone hunting and she was resting. Tragically, during transportation all but one was killed, from mistreatment, neglect, and exposure. The remaining one was caged and hauled on a cart, crying the whole while. They passed into the hot desert territory of a young copper Fire dragon named Palorforthen, who heard the calls and went to investigate. Spying the stolen hatchling, he swooped in with his fire blazing to ward off the thieves and break the youngster free. Not finding any parents, and the young hatchling too young to speak or otherwise show where he lived, Palor took him back to his lair and for weeks he tended and fed the little hatchling, thinking of him as a adopted little brother almost...until the mother and father came calling. The evil pair were quite ready to slay Palor, viewing him as the thief that had stolen them in the first place, if not for the little hatchling's obvious affection for him. After listening to his terrified babbling, they decided to believe him and, seeing how much their little son cared for him, forced Palor into servitude for them and bullied him back to their lair as a companion and guardian for their remaining son, leaving him under threat of horrid torture and death to not let any harm come to him or to make him upset. In fear of his own life, and in truth having grown very fond of the little hatchling, he bowed to their wills and became a servant, tending their son as a playmate, older brother, and protector....always under the watchful eyes of his sadistic parents.

    Narthrax

Painted up Narthrax, the biggest beast I've done so far. I didn't back Bones 2, but this dragon was one of the pieces on my must have list, and I grabbed it as soon as it hit retail. I think it's such a great dragon sculpt. My first plan was to put him on a 75 mm base to be used as a Huge dragon in D&D, but I soon realized that was simply not going to fly, so he ended up on a 100 mm instead. Painting wise, I pretty much based it (but tried to improve) on the Pathfinder Red Dragon I did about a year ago (which was kind of a test piece with Narthrax in mind). I also messed around with some Vallejo fluorescents for the mouth and eyes. Hope you like!

    77279: Bones Narthrax

Here is my take on Narthrax. He's a gift for our local Domestic Violence Shelter's art auction. I ended up leaving him with a gloss sealer due to weather issues, so he didn't photo as well. Also, I think it was still wet when I took these. Sigh. I love this sculpt- he's just so dynamic and the wings are awesome to paint. The details Julie puts into these guys in terms of animal influences are fantastic. So much personality! I wanted some color contrast, so I put some of the blue-green as a reflection in his under belly I love using red and green together. The colors for the whole thing are walnut brown, carnival purple, mahogany brown, brilliant blue and sun yellow. I did use some white for the mouth as well. The base is done with hot glue, glitter, greenstuff, some extra weapons and sand/rocks. I pinned his tail to the base to get him to stand straighter and nailed the right foot into the base for extra strength- I greenstuffed scales over the nail. you can see where the middle foot area is "thicker" from the nail. he ended up more yellow than I wanted, but I ran out of time to go back and wash in the midtones. Next time. Enjoy! C&C always welcome and I love answering questions!!

77279: Narthrax, Queen of the Jungle

I do not know if Narthrax is male or female but as I worked on it, I began to refer to it as she and named her Beastie. She is a great dragon with fantastic scale detail and I had a blast painting her and doing her base. The base is a block of wood that I carved the pond area into. I attached the integral base and built up the cork around it and the resin columns and faces (which you can barely see in the photos. The picture I had of my mind was ancient ruins near a jungle pond. The columns are from Screct Weapon, the faces from Scibor, and the plants are from Kamizukuri that I got from Hangar 18 Miniatures. I apoligize for the pictures, she was a beast to take pictures of. Beastie was my entry in the Fantasy Large catagory at Gateway this past weekend where she took first place. Any input would be appreciated.

    The Summer WIP of SGHawkins

With my summer exchange mini 99.99% done, it is time to start on some personal projects. On my work table are two competition entries as well as the start of my Infinity Bakunin Nomad squad. On the two competition entries, I mainly have done base construction. The first base is for a male assassin from Dark Sword. In my mind I have pictured palace/temple ruins in the desert. Why this? Well, the miniature reminds me of this guy: And so, he will be my inspiration for this piece. The big base is for someone special and is still missing elements. Here is where it stands now: It will be a jungle themed base and the hollowed out area is for a resin pour to make a pound/creek. There will be some more rocks/faces/columns on the other side once the minis base is attached. That will be in awhile as I want to do the resin pour before completing any other area of the base in case i have to scrap it. Who is deserving of this base you ask? None other than Narthrax. Lastly we have the beginnings of my Infinity squad, who are just assembled, based, and primed. They will be tabletop quality but if I really like how they turn out I may also enter them in the competition. I know they are just bare bones now, but any input would be appreciated.
  16. Made this for someones' birthday. :)
  17. The girl next door requested a dragon for her birthday, after she saw me give one to somebody else. I really hate giving away miniatures, because I feel my painting is not good enough for displaying to random people. But.. What can you do? :P Soo.. I figured I'd give it a go. Been working on these two on and off since yesterday evening: Based one black, the other white: The Valkyrie stood very low, so I sculpted a stand for her with a cork and some Fimo: Didn't fit perfectly with the ridges, but I think I can get away with it as a whole: And this is just about how it stands at the moment: I'd happily take some advice on base clutter. Something to make it more interesting.. I figured I'd just add some stones?

    77279: Narthrax ( Copper )

So I'm not starting this one just yet, but I figured I could get some feed back before I do start it... I was toying with several ideas, and am wondering what people think of this as the color scheme. It's my dragon Palorforthen, very coppery with black and gold and hints of purple update with the start of the mini
