Hello! I recently had my first in-person game in a year and a half, and started getting the yen to paint my vast hoard of unpainted Bones. Having painted a few, I thought of the Forums, and thought - well, I should post them here! I always love to search for other people's paint jobs, perhaps they may want to look at mine. I did, incidentally, participate in Bones V, but I messed up my pledge (I thought I closed it in like October, but apparently didn't,) but it's not like I didn't have enough from II and III. Anyway, this is a sculpt I marked down as "I really want to paint this," -- Olivia. For some reason the look on her face just appealed to me. I generally start off with Brown Liner on my Bones, and in this case that was probably a mistake - since I wanted her to be dressed in a de-saturated yellow robe I never quite got rid of the brown. Ah well. I also tried to make the vial she was holding half-full and look like glass... I think I succeeded but I'd love to know your thoughts. Comments, Criticisms, and advice most welcome!

Thus is the marvelous tale of Ahmad the thrice-fortunate. May the hearer be inspired to virtue thereby! *** These genies were a delight to paint. I'm happy with the dawn coloring on the big one. Notice that it originally came with the smoke emanating from a lamp, but a) so many do, while so few sculpts use the equally-canonical rings and jars, and b) scale creep made it about the size of a man's torso in 28/32mm. Here's a turnaround with more angles. Used more colorshift paints on his space-vest. Olivia (77396) is also a great sculpt, especially for starkly contrasting colors. I don't believe I featured her earlier. Jazmine Silverveil, Almaya, and Qadira got their own show-off posts elsewhere. I guess for the purposes of this fiction Nemesra changed her style between Parts 1 and 2? And here are all the extraplanar entities that aren't as holy as angels and aren't quite devils:

A sweet sculpt that goes well with reds and whites. Maybe an esoteric flavor of Coptic nun; maybe a volunteer nurse; certainly here to help and to give evil a headache.

Hi all, I have been helping out at a monthly "learn to paint miniatures" class at a local games cafe. It has mostly been brand new painters who have never painted a miniature before. We are using the Reaper Learn to Paint starter kits as well as the miniatures that were provided by Reaper. We recently ran out of miniatures, so the cafe order a bunch of new ones. I convinced them that we should get enough of one miniature such that everyone in the class can paint the same one at the same time. That way people can follow along with an instructor who will show what they are doing on a screen. We are getting a lot of repeat attendees now, so some of the participants are ready to do more than just slap a single thick coat of paint on the figure. So far, they have been hard to convince to try any shading or highlighting. Even washes and drybrushing are meeting resistance. So, I am looking for advice. The figure we are going to do this month is 77396: Olivia, Female Cleric by Werner Klocke. I am going to paint one plain purple and show them Derek Schubert's monochrome class sample so they get a good sense of what highlighting/shading will do for their miniature. Olivia Purple Monochrome What I am looking for is suggestions on a colour scheme that looks appealing, will be relatively simple to paint and where the effects of highlighting and shading can clearly be seen. I am not good at picking out colour schemes, and I have already scoured the internet looking for ideas. So, your ideas, please! Any suggestions you have on colour or on conducting the class will be welcomed. Geoff

I taught my 2-hour class on Monochrome Painting again at ReaperCon this year. In my class, I discuss how to compose a figure using differences in value instead of differences in color, and how to simulate materials (such as cloth, leather, metal, and skin) through the contrast of values (highlights and shadows), and then I paint a figure (or at least part of one) to demonstrate the principles. I painted the lower-front and right sleeve of the robe, the mace, bottle, and right hand during the class. I finished painting her back at home last weekend. The painting time was about an hour in class and another hour or 2 at home. Colors were black, white, and Reaper Master Series paints Imperial Purple and Amethyst Purple. Do you have some paints that you always forget about and thus almost never use? For me one of those is the "red leather" from the scalecolor line. This once I remembered to give it a try, and just for fun I limited myself to highlighting it using just the paints in their wood and leather set. Iroko and Birch both worked well enough for tabletop, but I think in the future I'll use some actual reds. For the rest, she was painted pretty quickly and will go into the done pile after I do a couple quick touch-ups.
