  1. I traded a new painter friend some Skelton models for some beast men. Here's one done.
  2. Cado Ezechiar - one of GW vampire models. Truly a fun one to paint. Skin was a mix of dusty skin highlight and vampire skin from MSP. Nice combo! Let me know if that glowing sword coming through the sheath makes sense. Also wasn't sure about the green bottle.
  3. The unrelenting, swarming, terrifying tide that is known as the Skaven... Also known as "skrit skrit of death-death to all, but maybe save a few bakers as they make delicious cookies and cupcakes!" I'm playfully blaming a wolf for this thread, but it's a different one for a change. This time it was @Chaoswolf! This is going to be a looooong project. Arguably it already is, since most of the initial contents of this army were purchased over a decade ago, but I have a tentative goal in mind of "fully finished by 2020" which gives me a year and eight months to work on it in between all my other projects - a goal I hope I can manage. It was originally supposed to be assembled six weeks after I purchased the 25th anniversary army box, and then there'd be a campaign, prizes and whatnot, but being stupidly busy with work kind of prevented that from happening back in the day and I wound up backing out of that event/tournament. Later on, Isle of Blood was added in. Either way, I've always wanted to have a big, GINORMOUS HORDE OF DOOM, and the Skaven definitely portray such in my eyes Always did like their lore, and more importantly, the models, the fluff, and the fact they're murderous, backstabbing buggers! Eshin has always been my favourite, but Skryre is definitely a close second due to their shiny shiny blasty murder-kill anything in their path. Why the focus on Pestilens though? Well, truth be told, any good kill-kill stab-stab from the Skaven is going to be comprised of the various different factions, but the biggest part is that their models are some of the most eye catching to me. That and I already had a bunch of them, so I figured why not! Their siege weapons are also rather lovely, at least the Plague Furnace. I'm still debating about the Plagueclaw, but for now I still plan on having two in there for symmetry and versatility At the moment, I only have about half (or so) the units I'd like to have, but I'll work on acquiring the rest over time. What do I have right now? (Spoilers added to be friendlier to mobile users) (So.... Assuming I counted correctly, we're talking 201 238 minis) And what's being added in? (So.... about another 243 small models, 2 small siege units, and 11 siege weapons/behemoth added in bringing that to a grand total of 444 481 small units, 2 smaller siege units, and 11 large siege weapons. It's 454 491 small models total if you factor in the Mordheim models I probably have kicking around somewhere o_O) Just for my own calculations, I'm writing down in a spoiler what I think will wind up being the entirety of the army... ...I kind of figured that if I'm going to go in, I'm going to go ALL IN. Sure, it's technically an army that's illegal to field due to too many leaders (18/8 if you include the on foot Grey Seer, 17 if you don't), and too many behemoths (7/5) with the new AoS rules, but it will give me that nice variety I crave, and flexibility to play in pretty much any size game. It will also look downright insane on a shelf once it's done I suspect. Technically, it's also a 8,940 point army as currently written, but that's just using info from the Warscroll builder, and not making use of any Battalions, which could theoretically change the composition of this army, and have me add (or possibly subtract) models. Come to think of it, odds are I'll wind up taking a good look through the 9th age's website to get ideas for various other miniatures, because while this is technically an army I might field, I just want a nice, varied horde, and nothing says varied quite like adding in minis from several other companies ...Doubly so when some of their miniatures are a lot nicer looking (like say, the Jezzails, or even rat swarms). For example, Otherworld, Reaper, and Windmaster all have models that can easily fit in ~_^ Now... No good thread is without pictures, so here's a part of the reason why the next several orders from Reaper are going to have a decent amount of bases in them... ^That there is what I've been able to round up so far that isn't still in a sealed box. At least most are assembled, but there's that one annoying thing... They're all on 20mm square bases, and Age of Sigmar tends to prefer them being on round bases (most being 25mm, but some being other sizes)... Not to mention the fact i tend to prefer circular bases anyways. Thankfully, I used superglue for almost all of them, so that will help IMMENSELY. I'll also be doing up bases for each and every one of them, which is probably going to chew through a decent amount of my various supplies, given that the last time I did up some bases (earlier this week) I chewed through half of the 200g of Magic Sculpt I have (although to be fair, there were 2x 60mm and 16x 25mm bases for my Tau, even if it was just the broken concrete stamp it still uses up a good amount of putty). I also greatly prefer the nice lip that Reaper's bases have, because it lets me try and have the added in designs be relatively flush with the "expected" height, unless I otherwise plan on having them be higher (like say, for heroes and/or leaders) ^ So here we have the bases for what was originally going to be my Censer Bearers, but it turns out those are supposed to be on 32mm bases, so instead these will be for my Poison Wind Globadiers, which rather works out because those haven't been based yet ...Happy fox to say the least. ^The top most 40mm base is for my Warlord (which will feature a decent more rubble on top of those cobblestones), while the other two are for two of my Rat Ogres. The 18x 25mm splintered deck bases are for my Night Runners. When I make the other 22x bases, I'll make sure to have more raw material so the details don't get squished when stamping. Most of them turned out alright, but some of them you could tell I didn't have enough and/or really should have had the stamp against something solid instead of my fingertips. Up first will be the poison wind globadiers.... Once I clear up a bit of room on my cutting mat anyways, I kind of have a bunch of gnolls, kitsunes, and minotaurs taking up that space right now ^_^;;;;;;
  4. I've been out of the game for a bit with work and travel and spring break. I had painted this little dude a while back, but got him based this morning to try and get my wheels back under me Hopefully get some more in this month Attempted nmm on the blades and armor, but failed. Ended up going with tmm instead and feel OK about the change. I was going for higer contrast in the robes , and wanted them to look dirty. They are also ok, but not as solid as I aimed for. Overall still happy with him.

  6. Here's my second skeleton following the same color scheme: bone, Red, orange/brown. Seems to be working so far. Just adding to this one to prevent flooding the forum.

Thought a project thread might help get the hobby juices flowing (Not that I have a great track record of actually finishing them), and what better project than my new centrepiece mini from GW (Something else I don't have a great track record of finishing...), the Lord of Gluttony! Eventually it'll look like this:- But it starts off like this:- At the end of day one, I've built most of their platform thingy:- Couple of minor gaps to fill, but it went together surprisingly well. And got the first Big, Crawling Dude put together:- Let's see how much further I get tomorrow!
  9. Here's another I got through this weekend. Was trying for NMM on the armor, but I think it came out more just yellow armor. Ah well. I still think the look is cool. Tried adding in some matte varnish to my black paint I did on the base. Dude. That's the way to go. Will be doing every time from here out. Also fun: didn't use any black on this model. As in not even shade colors.
  10. Got another one in this weekend all the way through, painted and based. I have seen this model done a number of different times and have really envied the work of those I saw, but it was finally my turn. Overall, this one was done on faster side and I'd love to have gone into further detail, but I got a bit excited to finish. I think I could punch up the cape a bit more with some orange. The skeleton colors were a bit of a test: light brown, sand yellow, splintered bone. The steel mail was also a test where I cant sem to figure out how to best highlight metal. It's too bright for me to see how much I'm layering on and it just looks like big jumps when I try. Either way, this one came out good, but I know I could have done it better.
  11. This was an exceptionally difficult one for me, but one I'm very happy with the work. I saw this model and thought how cool it would be to do a skin tone coming through under the veil. I wasn't sure about the NMM all over it, but I think it still works. I also realized too late that the thing she's standing on is a felled statue instead of it being a giant acorn. Woops. Seemed like another fitting Halloween model. What do you think? Anything to improve or recommend?
  12. Just finished off my final Crimson Court model. I absolutely loved this box of models. Fun to paint, great poses, and interesting characters. This one had been waiting for me to paint him to long. Just decided to go for it.
  13. I recently acquired the latest of Games Workshops Warhammer Quest games:- The Cursed City. I'd actually like to completely paint one of these things for once, and thought a project thread might help! First, I built everything (Well, maybe everything. Games Workshop continues to be kinda weird about this game, so I'm not sure if it's getting expansions or not):- And then made a spreadsheet. I can't batch paint, so even simple minis (like the rats and skeletons) I've put in small groups to help maintain momentum. I rolled a 5 (actually I rolled a 30 and then a 32, but I know this project is doomed if I start with a rat pile instead of something interesting):- Brutogg Corpse-Eater, unusual Ogre:- I've made him a simple base (I've been spoilt by all the integral ones I've been dealing with lately), mostly sand with some broken flagstone patches made of putty, and gave him the usual White Primer and Brown Wash undercoat. Leaving him to dry overnight.
  14. Just picking up on all the posts I've missed over the last few months. Battle Report! Turns out squigs are not just funny looking, they are funny to paint. I loved these models and really found they took amazing to dry brushing. I was testing colors and layers. Highs: * dry brush was excellent. Used some cheapo makeup brushes and they did great. * i used a purple glaze over orange and then built it up with orange further. Looked good. * blue came out great, but i don't know what layers to use on it to give contrast like the purple orange one. *teeth are all solid and look good. *skin folds are natural looking and added freckles on some are much better than expected. * the yellow one was testing out transparent paints and it went on like a dream. Lows: *not too many complaints really. These all came out more or less as expected. * challenged by how low they are to the base and getting them with ground effects. *never painted mushrooms and wasn't sure how to go about it.
  15. Wanted to continue working on my Underworld stuff, but didn't fancy the last two minis I had left in the previous thread, so thought I'd roll them into a new one. This time we've got 10 randomly chosen minis, the two dudes from the last thread and the whole Sea Elf team (They felt too fragile to pack away after I built them). Here we have Cyrille and Celine (A pair of Elven Peacekeepers) and Snoz a Goblin Scout with his wolf Fang. This set consists of Zellotl (Lizardman Warrior), Freshly Awake (a newly risen Skeleton), Frilna (a companion beast to the Fey Elves), Sorcha (battle-hardened Mercenary) and Ailithir (Evil Knight). Yrkill and Jafari (from the previous thread) plus their companions Sigmundur and Sethos (because someone or something is determined to have me paint these particular teams). Sethos isn't an Underworlds figure but is a matching Cultist from the OOP Warhammer Quest:- Silver Tower game on an old resin base I found. And this is the Sea Elf team. We've got Gaelin (he's a Fish), Tanjaya (the Warrior at the back), Indra (a Summoner), Surya (a Harpooner with no eyes) and Orym (he's a Crab). Making a start on Sorcha:- Painted the furry collar on her cape. It's a base of Cold Grey with a Black Wash and the drybrushes of Cold Grey, Ghost Grey and Off-white (Only on the upper shoulder bits). Not sure if I should paint her head next or the armour that's close to it, either way I think I'll make a mess.
  16. Hello there! Now it's no secret that I'm a fan of Games Workshop minis, there's two problems with this though, I can't paint armies (I've tried, I lose interest after the first few minis) so I miss out on the interesting units, and just buying heroes gets rather expensive! Then I discovered their Underworlds game, getting little bite-sized versions of the various factions (often with fancy bases!), and now I'm obsessed. This year I want to try and put a dent in this particular pile of plastic (or, at least cancel out the new ones I'm getting), and thought a project thread might help. I've made a spreadsheet, ran a number generator and picked the first ten candidates. Laserian - An evil Knight and Balmonoth - Insidous Rat-man. The Champion - Wandering Undead Warrior (He's not actually an Underworlds mini, he's one of only two Games Workshop resin minis I brought that were cast well enough to keep, but he fits in the skeleton faction.) and One-Eyed Thabron - Orc Mercenary. Awil-sin - Fey Elf and Jafari - Cultist. Yrkill - Sky Dwarf Adventurer and Fahime - Evil Elven Assassin. Padean - Barbarian of the Western Plains and Elodie of the Blade - Elven Peacekeeper. Started working on Elodie:- Being an Elf I used Elf Fleshtone > Flesh Wash > Elf Fleshtone > Elf Fleshtone/Light Flesh, added a drop of Scarlett Red to the highlight mix for her lips, and gave her a pretty decent (IMO) pair of eyes. Next is her wacky hair.
  17. Presenting the Swamp Orc Standard Bearer, he's part of one of the newer factions in Games Workshop's Age of Sigmar range. Really happy with this one and I had a lot of fun painting all his chunky detailing! As always, any comments or criticisms are warmly received.
  18. Presenting Brutogg Corpse-Eater, my first finished adventurer from the game Cursed City by Games Workshop. Had a lot of fun painting this guy, I experimented by giving him grey-hued skin to represent his unhealthy eating habits (he eats zombies) and it worked better than I thought it would. Annoyingly though, I had to leave the bits under his coat unpainted (just couldn't get a brush up there), nobody will notice unless they turn him upside down, but it still bothers me that he's technically "Unfinished". As always, any comments or criticisms are warmly received.
  19. Presenting the Brewmistress, a Goblin Mage from Games Workshop, this diminutive herbalist can be found plying her trade along the winding road between Veilmouth and Silverton. For two coppers she'll let you take a swig of whatever she's brewing at the time, while her potions are always beneficial, it's probably best not to consider what's in it. Despite getting a little lazy with the ingredients rack towards the end, I'm really pleased with how this one turned out. As always, any comments or criticisms are warmly received.

Presenting my Beastman Champion and true child of Atmos (In my own fantasy setting I base some of my Games Workshop stuff in, Beastman are a race of former humans who were changed by worshipping an ancient, goat-headed god called Atmos. Occasionally, an actual goat-headed Beastman will be born amongst them and will be considered Atmos's offspring, they then get all the best food and stuff and grow up to be one of the leaders or shamans of the various tribes.) Who is from the Warhammer: Underworlds range by Games Workshop. I'm super pleased with how this guy turned out, but I really need to buckle down and actually finish one of these Underworlds sets. As always, any comments or criticisms are warmly received.
  21. Presenting the Ogre Tyrant by Games Workshop, he is very heavily armed. This one took a while, it's very much one of those minis where the more you work on it, the more details you find. I am very pleased with how he turned out though. As always, any comments or criticisms are warmly received.
  22. Presenting the 'Shroomancer, part of the Gooblapalooza set from Games Workshop who are all Goblin Wizards with different powers. This one alters the reality around him by getting really high on mushrooms, considering his "creations" appear to be attacking him this doesn't seem to be the most reliable of powers. Really pleased with how this one turned out, I think the super cartoony sculpt just gelled well with the way I paint. As always, any comments or criticisms are warmly received.

  24. I've never been much of a fan of GW. I mean the first fig I ever painted was GW, but that's because my friend (who was also the store owner) gave it to me for free (Come on, try it, the first one's free....). And I played some Bloodbowl back in the day (should really finish my Chaos Dwarf team one of these days...only been a decade or two). But I never really got into anything GW was making. Style wasn't what I was looking for, or the price point, or whatever. So then last week I was in Montreal for the GP (great time, too bad the race itself was soooooo boring). Was visiting a friend who lives up there and we wandered into the rather impressive GW store in the Eaton Centre. Took a look around and caught sight of this: Apparently a new edition of Age of Sigmar is coming out this week, and these guys are a faction. Or whatever the different groups are called. I thought, "Those are pretty cool! Flying stuff. Steampunky. I like." Then we left. And I went and marshaled for 3 days (the support races were better, btw). Then we met back up on Monday. And I was still thinking about the cool steampunky flying ships. So we went back and I picked up the starter. (they have 2 bigger flying ships too, but ouch, not cheap). So, this is what they look like when you open the box: Oye! Lots of bits. Looks like everything has options (they have a very detailed assembly guide, quite impressive). Options that presumably follow rules. Rules I'm not sure I'll ever read, let alone play. But I may check with the local store; I think they had some folks playing something GW. So that's all I've done with them so far, but figured I'd post and get the WIP started. These may take a bit to get going.
  25. I don't usually paint Warhammer miniatures, but there is a local painting contest which has very specific rules so I figured why not. I've never entered a painting contest before, so there is no time like the present. I've decided to carry on with my experiments in object source lighting and apply wht I've learned so far in this project. One of the big challenges will be doing the OSL in the metallic armour of the knight. I've never tried that before. The two figures are "Neave Blacktalon" and "Wight King". Here is my planned layout. The white line is to align their line of sight so they are looking each other in the eyes. The source of light will be a big glowing rune on the ground in between them. I chose these two figures becuase they both have cloaks that are blowing in the wind, but they are blowing in opposite directions. That means that when they are facing each other, the wind direction is consistent. I intend to make the grass be bent over in the same direction as well. The wind is blowing from the wight towards the knight. I am very tempted to name this project "Fus Ro..." That might not be genre appropriate though. I had some in progress shots of the base but I lost them somewhere. Drag and drop error, probably. I used milliput to make the rocky base. I used the base of another rocky miniature to make impressions to give it texture. The wight's foot is incorporated into his base, so I incorporated his whole base into the milliput mass. I sculpted the runes/rock circle into the milliput and then added sand to it. In the crevices. I made my first big mistake at this stage. I added the grass tufts too. I should have waited until after I primed the whole base and then painted the ground where the grass would be attached. My thinking was that the grass would look better if it was highlighted with the OSL effect in the same way as everything else. However, it has proven very difficult to get paint through the grass tufts to make them shadowed underneath. Other than that, I like the way it turned out. I prepainted the whole base using the stone greys triad. I highlighted the base with the greys and added white to get the areas that would be hit by the light from the rune to be brightest. Today I spent the morning painting the OSL effects onto the base. This lets me make sure the OSL on the figures and on the base will line up with each other and also be the same colours. I am using these for the OSL effect: Here is where I am at so far. The figures are beside the base on their cork handles so you can see how they will line up eventually. I need to darken the areas around the outside edge of the base a lot more still. It is actually a lot darker than it look in the picture already. I added progressively Nightshade Purple and Brown Liner to the Stone Grey for the shadow areas on the base.
