  1. I've been doing a lot of painting over the last few months but very little posting. I'll probably do some image dumps at some point, I do like searching for other people's versions of the minis and I'm sure others would like to see mine. Anyway, when I went through my collection of painted minis appropriate for PCs, I saw very few armored women. I did two from Bones III, and Anduriel from a Lean-to-Paint kit - he's almost certainly supposed to be male but honestly you put a person in that much armor and they're pretty androgynous. 🙂 I did some minor modifications to Skara - if you're wearing armor no-one should ever see your cleavage (you keep your heart there!) and I suppose she may have been wearing a dress, but she had *&^! spaulders so I sculpted her a breastplate and gave her more-or-less-full armor. She was wearing an elbow cop on her sword arm, but not her other, so I gave her one. I also added a few more thigh plates to cover up a bare leg. Not terrible, though a bit rough - I should probably have built the breastplate out more to make it look more angular. Sculpting is hard! As far as painting goes, I gave her a fairly normal skin-tone but blue hair. I'm quite pleased with how the hair looks. Amusingly enough, when I started painting Mara I thought she had an angel on her shield. I guess not. 🙂
  2. Learn to Paint Kit 3: When these kits were still being sold, it was suggested that this one be attempted last, even though it is #3. So now, having done the rest, it’s time to get down to business. Look at all these paints! There’s even a bottle of the brush-on sealer that everyone keeps taking about. I’m excited! Fresh brushes too! The minis are Anduriel Brightflame, Elven Warrior and Tyden, Female Barbarian. A bit of flashing and some non-Euclidean geometry happening to their weapons, but that’s nothing unusual. I’m impressed by the details on these minis, Anduriel in particular has a lot going on. Now to take a look at the instructions, see what this Non-Metallic Metal is all about. Oh. Okay. I see why it was recommended to wait on this one. Did I say excited? I meant terrified. Ah well, no sense delaying the inevitable, time to prep and practice. I hope it’s interesting at least.
  3. Kit 3 time, finally getting into some NMM! I'm going to start with Anduriel. Primed above, and then lined with Walnut Brown:
  4. So here's the results of my first lesson in NMM. Thanks, Anne! Overall I have to say I'm pretty happy with how he came out (I hope you're sitting down!). I also went a bit further with the hair thanks to ttuckerman mentioning Oiled Leather as a shade for blond hair, and I decided to punch up a couple highlights in my quest to work on my contrast. Now I need to go back and revamp my cloth and leather techniques! I like the effect I got glazing a dark red over the little scroll case or whatever it is, tucked between the sheaths and bedroll. Tried for some blue/green eyes but it didn't photograph well. I'll probably get an eyeroll (hah) from my fiancee, she likes to make fun of the freaky eyes I give characters in video games. And for fun, here's an elf I did back in the 90s for comparison. Finally, you can see the WIP in http://www.reapermini.com/forum/index.php?/topic/47264-groupopenwip-l2pk3/'>this thread.
