My brother and I are signed up to run Burrows and Badgers at Gen Con this summer. I have three war bands from the last time we did this (2019?), and some spares, but have been wanting to change things up a bit. So, taking a break from vintage Ral Partha, I decided to finish off this Otter Mercenary, who has been languishing partially painted for a while. I might end up touching up the contrast before basing him.

With Gencon just a few weeks away, I need to finalize the three warbands I’m responsible for in our Burrows and Badgers game...so one more speed painted figure this morning. 50 minutes or so on this one.

One more mouse for the order of battle pool for Gencon. I’m behind on basing, but should get to him over the weekend.

I haven’t picked up a brush in a couple of weeks, so I was happy to get over the painting block with an Oathsworn speed paint yesterday. (I wasn’t timing closely, but about an hour.) I need four or five more figures before Gencon, where my brother and I will be staging a couple of B&B games. The pictures are a little extra contrasty; I’ll add a follow-up once based.

One more Burrows and Badgers figure for Gencon games... I’ll post more once I get the basing done, which may not be until Friday.

A little speedpaint job before breakfast today; after playing Burrows and Badgers at Christmas, my brother and I agreed that we’ll run some at Gencon this summer. So, I need to work up another couple of war bands. For the Redwall fans, I gather this is not-Cluny the Scourge...

I have had a little time to do some painting this week. While my main ongoing project has to do with filling out the orders of battle for my five-country fantasy campaign, my brother has been after me to get a Burrows and badgers war band ready by Christmas, when I next expect to see him again. As it happens, the Muse has been receptive to his entreaties, and the inspiration available to me this week was for Burrows and Badgers. I find that disrespecting the Muse is usually a bad idea, so here we are. These two are the otter ranger and the mole mercenary; I recently was working on some 40mm historical landsknechts, so he was in my comfort zone. I know that Michael Lovejoy reads these forums, and he has commented that he likes to sculpt everything in one piece because he doesn't like assembling things. This is a position which I am 100% in agreement with, and that contributes to these figures being a real pleasure to paint. they also are fast to do. The mole mercenary turned out to be about a 45 minute job, so I could have done him as a speed painting contest (minus some paint mixing time I'd have needed for contest conditions.) As soon as I finished these, I pulled out the next three I'd already primed and started on of them, and then rooted through the boxes from the two Kickstarters I'd backed. So, more to come...

I was moving miniatures around in the basement yesterday in preparation for moving and ran across the box containing the Stonehaven giants Kickstarter figures. When I ordered them originally, I figured that the first one up would be the sleeping/dead giant. I was/am expecting him to feature more as an objective marker than an active combatant. Anyway, I washed him off and spray primed him last night, after which I was afflicted with the fear that the resin might not be compatible with the spray primer, but I appear to have lucked out. This is just as well, as it looks like these giants are going to be exclusive to the Kickstarter production run, so replacing it could be a problem. I have also primed the next six Oathsworn Burrows and Badgers figures that I wished to do, so I was feeling ambitious this morning. In practice for the new house where there won’t be a permanent painting space, I pulled out the travel paint kit and had at things, working back and forth between them as colors overlapped. The raven mage got a purple hood in honor of the local American football team. Since ravens appear to be pretty uniformly black, I was mostly drybrushing some highlights. After spraying, I should have made them even contrastier, because they are pretty invisible without the flash. Live and learn... Anyway that puts me up to a dozen, so I should be able to run two war bands and get a game on the table relatively soon, even if just as a solo.

Not the best pictures, but Warlady asked me about the sizes of various anthropomorphic animals, because I've been working on Burrows and Badgers. Here's a Reaper mousling with an Oathsworn mouse. The Oathsworn is a little chunky, but the mousling is even more exaggerated. I'm not sure that I'd mix them. They are similar in height, though. I have two Darksword Critter Kingdom figures. This hedgehog bard is also exaggerated compared to the Oathsworn, but possibly in a reasonable range for size. My other Darksword figure is a penguin rogue, so I know he won't fit in. All of the Darksword figures are approximately the same size, so if you can live with the mix of styles, it looks like B&B "medium" sized beasts (e.g. hedgehogs, squirrels, weasels) would be the best bet for compatibility. If anyone else has additional pictures, please post!

On to the next B&B figures, a heavily armored squirrel knight and a highwayfox...

Continuing with my goal to play some Burrows and Badgers, I was working with the travel paint set on a couple of mice, a knight and a scribe....

Two more members of my B&B war band...

I had to take the car in for some service today, so I threw my travel paint kit in my bag and grabbed a few Burrows and Badgers figures. My brother recently decided that we should play Burrows and Badgers, and has a war band painted up. I don't know if I'll have mine done by Gencon or not, but at least I now have a figure of my own. Of the figures which I picked for my first batch, one's a landsknecht and two are in tartans, so I decided I'd better start with somebody simpler. When I checked the Oathsworn site for a hint on the weasel fur markings, I was amused to discover that I had decided on a very similar color scheme. I am considering this to be a speed painting practice item; it only took me about 45 minutes to do. As usual, I attracted quite a few curious passers-by.

The kickstarter is now Live.

Hey all! Finally finished this mini. This might be my favourite from the line so far (heavily biased because I love otters). I actually used a picture as reference that I have taken from an otter myself at the zoo! Please excuse the phone picture quality. Still some learning to do with gems and I really want to try nmm but I chicken out every time :p oh well I actually really like his shiny armour!

Hey all! Just finished this little guy. Really fun to paint and I quite like the way it turned out! I really love the line!

Painting up a rat dude for a Pathfinder game I'm in. I wanted to go with an albino white rat look. I had trouble getting the skin to come out right at first. I'd gone with a medium caucasian skintone (Vallejo Medium Flesh), washed with GW Carroburg Crimson, and then highlighted with Vallejo Highlight Skin, a very pale skintone. I wanted to go with a high contrast. It ended up not working quite as well as I had hoped. Adding in some Reaper Old West Rose where the Medium Flesh showed helped a lot. In the future, I think I'll either add a midtone in between the two skin colors, or else start with a pink like the Old West Rose. The end result isn't too bad, but I think I can get there faster, and with a less mesy looking result. I used my Scale 75 steel alchemy set, using their guide for a more blue steel for the sword and chainmail. I think I'll want to add in a bit more of a neutral steel color for the midtones. Right now, it's coming across too blue and green. After that, I need to finish up the fur cloak, do some finishing on the leather belt, and add some basing.

Here is the mighty Shrew-zerker, from the Burrows and Badgers line (and game) from Oathsworn. Sorry about the shininess, as he's a for play piece so I gloss coated him, and its been too humid or damp to dull coat him for the last couple of weeks. I'll update with some new pics whenever I get a chance to spray him. He's a great little fig (Oathsworn's anthropomorphic figs are scaled like the actual animals are, so shrews are pretty tiny, around 20mm) and was fun and quick to paint. He's been done for a while but my basing stuff was all away from moving to a new painting space. I finally found some and put a quick and simple base on him. Hopefully as I get more used to basing with flock again (its been....a while) my bases will improve for future B&B figs. Update! Dull coated and with improved photography....

Next we have the Shrew Warrior. Again, sorry about the shininess. I'll post new pics once the weather cooperates for dull coating. Another fun little guy, full of character. Update! It actually stopped raining long enough to spray some dull coat. I've also been messing around with my phone and background to get less washed out pics.

tl;dr: I'm painting bunnies!! (and other critters) I'm finally wrapping up my painting projects left over from December, so I guess it is time to finally decide on some things to paint in 2017. One of my goals for this year is to actually play some of the games I've bought figs for. So far finding time to get a minis game going with the gaming group has been rather slow...been passing around the Frostgrave book since the fall, everyone seems interested, but haven't moved beyond that yet. So, moving on to my other potential person to play against, my wife. While she like playing games, so far she hasn't found time to read the quick start rules for CAV:SO I put on her phone last summer, and her Rach army remains unpainted. So perhaps something...cute and furry.... Burrows and Badgers seems like a perfect fit, and I've been dying to start painting them. I've been slowly reading through the rules (the only time I ever seem to find time to read these days is when I go to bed, but then reading rules makes me sleepy...(no Michael, it's not your writing, I have partially read CAV:SO, Counterblast, MERCS and Timewatch sitting beside the bed too )). And the other night I showed her pics of all the figs from the first two kickstarters. And she seemed interested.But now the problem is she wants all my Bunnies.... Also, all the figs are 1 piece, so we can play even before all the figs are painted (I know they won't roll as well, but it will help with learning the rules). And I get to paint all the awesome terrain Jo has made for B&B (and I may pull some out of the other Oathsworn boxes too). And as a bonus, if/when we get to playing Frostgrave, I'm making a warband out of B&B figs. So, I will dig out the figs and get a picture over the next few days, then get some figures prepped for painting. Now where to start?? Maybe rats.....I don't want to do the bunnies until I get a few under my belt...

So while I still don't have any Burrows and Badgers figures completed (the Shrew-zerker just needs his base finished, so almost....) I did finish the first 4 pieces of terrain. These are part of a large set of resin cast pieces Jo sculpted for the first Burrows and Badgers Kickstarter called The Ambush the Camp terrain set. Lovely pieces. I went for a simple tabletop paint job, lots of washes and drybrushing. I expect these to see a lot of use in both B&B and hopefully Frostgrave so wanted something I could fix up if it got scuffed or marked up. I may go back and add some bits of moss or other basing once I get all my basing stuff sorted again; its in a bunch of piles from moving rooms.

Here is my first I painted from the Oathsworn Miniatures Burrows & Badgers Kickstarter. The Hare Warrior. While he is intended to be a gaming piece, I'll probable never get to field him (save in a solo battle). So I ultimately stopped fiddling with blending on the NMM. The rules recommend a 40mm base so that is what I went with. Here is how the Hare finally turned out: Thanks for looking and any C&C you feel inspired to post.
