Razor CAV (Bones; Metal is 24503)

Finally getting around to posting this one. It's the last of the four CAV I agreed to paint before I opened it up to anything else I wanted to paint on video. Then again, very low views on these, so I might paint something else next. Who knows. Went with a brown camo scheme on this, so gave it a desert base. Didn't turn out too bad, and it's now up in the display cabinet. And here's the video, should you care to see:
  2. Well, I have been promising myself that I would paint my CAV so I could play with the big stompy robots. However, every time I did a color scheme someone griped about how they were not "appropriate" colors. I like subdued khaki and greens and blacks, and i am no good a camo. (to my mind the concept of camo for a CAV is silly anyway the thing is 45 feet tall and weighs tons, its going to be noticed. I also got a bunch of airbrush colors called ghost tints that i really wanted to play with. The combination proved to be irresistible. I present to you the Jellybean Mercenary team! Ready to go and support whatever army is paying the most this week. instead of investing in camo color schemes, this company has invested in anti-static technology that makes sure their equipment stays bright and shiny in any condition! The team is dressed in the bright and shiny colors of the team leader Bertie's favorite jelly beans. these went from frantically trying to comply with a color scheme to just plain having fun. here is the team (i missed one so she gets painted later) in mixed formation. we have team lemon, team orange, team blueberry, team blue raspberry, team cotton candy, Team Grape, and team boysenberry (recon) Hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I enjoyed painting them. I may take better pictures later...
  3. Has anyone got recommendations for terrain of a suitable scale for CAV robots, with a particular focus on buildings? I am told the scale is 10mm, which I am told is about 1/180, or model railroad N scale. There are a lot of readymade and kit model railroad buildings out there, although most of them seem to be smaller and more rural or historical. Are they worth the price? Hydrocal is like plaster, isn't it? So a hydrocal building would be pretty heavy. Styrene, however, sounds a bit fragile. But I don't know; it's not my area of expertise. I have some vision of playing the game among futuristic, relatively tall skyscrapers. While I'm pretty sure I can make some out of half-gallon milk cartons, I am wondering what other possibilities are out there and if anyone can recommend -- or warn against -- products or processes.
  4. I finished off my Nicki Minaj color-themed Specter CAV. This was the third figure I've painted from the CAV Kickstarter. The first video I put up asked my subscribers for input on what color scheme to use. Nobody picked anything, so you can see the result in the second video. I'll not post the first video since it's just me using brown liner over the Bones figure. Now for pictures! And sadly, I forgot to make this part of the video and the initial set of photos, but I did put in one little funny joke on the base. Because it's all about the base, right? Oh, wait. Wrong pop singer. But poor, poor Nicki. Never saw the Specter coming. Now for 2/3rds of the videos, behind spoiler tags for quicker loading. You can go back and watch the first if you'd really like to. And looking back at my video manager, I realized I never posted up the second Bones CAV I painted, the Assassin, so here's a link to the single video of it, again behind spoiler tags:

    Generic Vehicle Stats

Not everyone can afford a Dictator, or even a Centipede. On particularly broke worlds, it's all you can do to scavenge up a few of the tougher civilian vehicles, mount a gun on them, maybe a few panels of plasteel you "borrowed" from the building site, and hope for the best. I threw together the following vehicles to represent such ragtag units. Be warned: fragile!

    CAV Power Armored Infantry

Here are the first of 2 sets of Power Armored Infantry for my Malvernis force. These are also a simple tabletop job though I couldn't resist adding the unit marking on them and making one base have a medic. These guys painted up really quickly and are surprisingly detailed for their size.

    CAV Butcher

Go a bunch of minis painted up yesterday so I thought I'd share them. Here is my Malvernis Butcher for CAV SO. This is an all metal figure not BONES. It's a simple tabletop job as I plan to rule the galaxy with these.

    Data Cards

So here is the idea: I believe it was Girot(¿) who post some download link for Data card for the Terrain and Rach CAV's. I have the two downloads but am hoping we will keep up this trend. I was also want to shoot the idea over to REAPER to make their down (smaller) data cards that would fit into a Playing card sheet protector (picture below). Girot's(¿) do and that is what I like about them. Dont get me wrong, I really like the cards with the picture of the CAV but in the end the conveniences of having the CAV taken off and it reduced down to "baseball card" size would be awesome. I also don't mind helping out and committing time to doing it with the nice green camo back grounds, maybe a symbol or two on them, whatever it takes. Wanted to put this out there to see if I am way off base here or if others feel the same way. (?) Personally I don't mind the small fonts but I know others would appreciate the larger ones. ¿Additionally, If the PDF's for the smaller ones could be pinned with the official ones as well?

    01407: Dana Murphy

WIP thread here: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/56226-01407-dana-murphy/ Dana Murphy is my first attempt at a larger scale miniature. She was a lot of fun, but also a lot of work. I really wanted to get her done for ReaperCon, so I had to rush a bit at the end. I made quite a few mistakes, but I also learned a lot about painting at a larger scale. I hope to paint up at least one at this scale before next year's ReaperCon. Convenient, since I bought two candidates at the con itself. Dana, including pedestal Closer-ups of Dana

    01407 - Dana Murphy

Here we have Dana Murphy, which I plan to enter in the Year of the Giants contest and hopefully Spaceship Superstar if I can get her done in time. The face is basecoated + wash, the eyes are done, and I put down the yellow base coat of her jumpsuit. I will be giving her a yellow and black color scheme.

    Bones Specter CAV

I actually got 2 finished this weekend! This is the Specter from my growing Malverins force. So far, I can field one of each specialty...

    Bones Assassin CAV

I managed to further my malvernis force. They now comprise the majority of my finished CAV models. Here is the Assassin finished. I just forgot to add the facing lines on the base. Here's the pics...

    Bones Dictator Cav

Here is my finished Rach Dictator. A simple tabletop job as all of my CAV's will be since I plan on them getting playtime. As always, Comments and Criticisms welcome.

    Bones Razor CAV

Here is the start of my Malvernis force. I really like how this came out. I still need to figure out a name for this force though. As always, Comments & Criticisms are welcome!

    24615: Dingo

So this is the first CAV miniature I've finished in, uh, well, like fourteen or fifteen years! I noticed it's "no longer used in CAV and being rescaled" so I can only hope my spur of the moment purchase over at Reaper wasn't in vain! At any rate, it's sporting the scheme I'm going to use for the unit I've decided to try and paint for, the 25th Legion. While I'm going to work at having a decal done for the unit, the hand painted Terran insignia will have to do for now. I liked the idea of going with a U.S. military desert tan, but tossing in the sci-fi element with the teal/turquoise. Turret turns with the help of a paper clip and drilled holes.
  16. I'm going to try to have completed Dingo pictures tonight if I can, but the Starhawk needs some more highlighting and basing. Tsuiseki has some more work ahead of it... ignore the battletech tanks in the background! :) Scheme is my "custom" scheme for the 25th Legion, the Steel Magpies

    Hex Camo Stencil

So, I've been thinking about painting some of my CAV in a camouflage pattern. I've got an airbrush (though haven't tried using it yet), and was thinking I'd find a digicamo stencil in about the right pixel range. Then I saw the CAV art work in the book and had a thought. Turns out that someone makes a hex camo stencil set (Anarchy Models, they did a KS a while back and are still around and selling online). However, I wasn't quite sure how big their hexes were and how well they'd translate to CAV's scale (They look a bit too big). Does anyone have experience with these stencils? Else have a good hex camo stencil set they can recommend?
  18. These are two kitbashes I assembled years ago that have been languishing in the Limbo of my parents' house until the day I live close enough to retrieve all of my hobby stuff. I visited briefly last week and had a chance to grab a few quick pictures to share. The first is a substitute for the RMI Bishop, which (apologies to James Burrell) has some of the ugliest arms in the CAV range. I filled in the leg-spaces on a Spider body and mounted it on Sabertooth legs. Then I removed the side missile packs and replaced them with a pair of the Warden's GGC turret. The second is intended as an RMI-styled substitute for the MK4 Ghost, another of my least favorite sculpts. This one was fairly involved. I started with Sabertooth legs, a Sultan torso, and Chancellor arms. I built up the legs with brown stuff to give it a bulkier feel and visually distinguish it from the Sabertooth and the above kitbash, and filled in the indent where the Sultan's missiles normally sit (if I remember right, the other brown stuff on the back was just covering up a slight miscast). Then, in the most challenging step, I cut out the middle quarter or third of the Chancellor's gun barrels and pinned them back together. I used a fairly long pin in an attempt to keep the barrels straight.
  19. 94003 Razor is the tiny chicken walker guy with no arms. Store Link 94004 Assassin is a standard mech guy with non-symmetrial weapon pods on his shoulders. Store Link 94007 Wight is a big running CAV with square pods and long arm-guns. Store Link Also, having just looked these guys up on the kickstarter page they (and my Spectre from before) all belong to the yellow ankh-dagger faction, which is a nice coincidence in case the rules ever come out. (cough) Usual prep: Filed off (some) mold lines, boiled to straighten things out, washed with a soapy toothbrush, rinsed, dried, and stuck to bottles. On my last/first CAV, sticking some of the bits to the bottle was a mistake, it made it hard to paint, and especially went bad with the varnish at the end. To combat this, I switched from poster-tacking on bottles to impaling them on sticks. The sticks are skewers or something, for food I guess, but they work better for this than I expected. They originally had pointy tips, but I just snipped off enough of the pointy end until what was left was just a bit smaller than the peg-hole, so it would go in far enough to be held by friction. I can set it in the bottle (Weighted with coins) when I need to set it down. For the arms (and smaller sticks) I used binder clips, it holds it securely and I can set it down without it toppling over. I'm a little worried about it squeezing the peg too much, but I figure bones are durable enough it shouldn't be a problem, especially if I get these done within a week or so. Which is my goal, get these done before Bones II arrive. To 'prime' I slathered on a coat of unthinned Reaper 09065 Grey Liner. I think I'm coming around to the liners, they go on easier than unthinned Walnut Brown and don't seem to have a problem sticking. Not much to see just yet.
  20. Well, I decided to finally throw my hat in here, and use this forum to help me get serious about this work. When CAV KS fulfilled core set, I got 2 partial kits, that reaper was awesome about replacing with complete ones...however, this left me me with some spare parts. This is what I have to work with so far: All I got so far is to dismantle the little arm, take the gun portion to add to the body of the unit elsewhere, and the pentagon type piece to bulk up the underside of the torso. It will likely still be a chicken-walker style, but a little beefier...not sure where else I'm going from there. SO! Blindly forward!

    Bones CAV Tiamat (94001)

Got started on the Tiamat this weekend. Nothing much, but a simple layer of Blue Liner on it. On my way on this! Woo hoo! Going to do a simple paint scheme. Other than the liner, I'm planning on just four other colors, all of which were selected randomly by the computer. Those four turned out to be about what I wanted anyway, so it worked out. I'll reveal the four colors in subsequent videos and posts. Older video hidden for faster loading:

    CAV - A selection of 6 Mechs

I decided to try and paint up a few of the CAV models I got in the Ace pledge, for my son. He selected two Halberd, Assasin and Wight models to start with. These were cleaned up a little, the mould lines are that obvious on these models, and in some place add to the detail. They were then clean and boiled for a bit to straighten the bent guns, followed by a quick dip in cold water. I initially tried to prime them in a khaki brown colour made with a brand of paint form Howard Hues, but this rubbed off far too easily, so I ended up going for a coat of Steel Legion Drab (GW), this seems to stick a lot better for these models. Not the best picture ever, but they are now a lot darker then I wanted, so some highlighting is going to be required. I am going to try and keep to few few highlight accents for each race of Mech, but they may turn out to be quite a ragtag bunch, I intend to paint two of each type with a base of Steel Legion Drab and the other with either a dark green or a grey. Comments or suggestions welcome as always.

    CAV Wight in M/90 camo

As a test piece, here's a Wight I've done up in a variant of Sweden's M/90 camo pattern. Finally printed myself a backdrop for photography, too! Now I just need to get some more versatile lights than those in my kitchen and I'm set!
  25. Hi, Here is a quick shot of some CAV Halberd I reposed. I like the regular standing straight pose, but I wanted to vary it a bit in my force. So i made one walking with laser extended, and one with a more open stance like taken mid-pivot. The third one is just a minor facing adjustment of the weapons. I'm using the same paint scheme as my Ritterlich force as I will be integrating them into it (which now has to become Merc). And here is a shot of the fully painted Ritterlich + Halberd force (there is 1 outlier Halberd in Camo which was a test scheme... I'm just not sure if I should repaint it). And here is the opposite Malvernis force: I'm pretty much done with painting the EB reward from the CAV SO Kickstarter. There is only the Rach Dictators left to paint, but I haven't figured out a paint scheme yet. So I'm taking a break from Big Stompy Robots for now as I have some fantasy projects in mind... C&C welcome
