1. (Now a 2022 WIP) Yes, a 2020 ReaperCon WIP! And a massive undertaking at that. I'm trying very hard not to nerd out and put this whole project into, er, Project. There's just so many pieces to keep track of, that maybe I'll just use this first post to keep track of things. Some background stuff, starting with a quote from the "Paint a giant robot! Group WIP" where I wrote some of what's planned: You can read the rest of that post here: Paint a giant robot post and a second one to see where I'm going with this: PLA print post in same topic Biggest takeaway is that, while useful, my PLA printer can only do so much. I have a resin printer backed on Kickstarter, but considering it's now 3 years late, I don't think I should hold my breath on it ever showing up. Especially when I can get a new Elegoo Mars resin printer with more capability for relatively cheap (<$300). The PLA machine was bought with both hobby and household goals in mind, and it's served well. But the resolution just ain't there! More on that down the posts. I also had the chance to gain some experience on paper plants at ReaperCon (Main post for that in the Terrain section post here: Vellum Paper Plants - Alien Jungle (WIP) Basically, I have the scrap booking machine to make my own alien plants: Which now leads me to this WIP. This is going to tie all those pieces together. The robot WIP will still be to get a good camo scheme, but that print job is not going to be used for the final diorama. Instead, that will be the resin printer's job. So, let's break down the WIP work that I can see so far, and will be edited later to add things and mark completions. Tasks to be completed: Figures Needed Wight (being pulled down backwards, caught by hidden lines) Gremlin Unit 01 (stole a supply crate and ran; actually just bait to get the larger CAV to follow) Gremlin Units 02 and 03 (trip line pair, successfully snagging Wight across the chest) Gremlin Units 04 and 05 (trip line pair, successful across another part of the chest) 2/27/22: Too busy; cut Gremlin Unit 06 (burner unit, cut Wight's left gun in two) Gremlin Units 07 and 08 (trap door unit, hiding entrance to jungle path with camo doors strapped to them) Gremlin Units 09 and 10 (trip line pair, successful across right thigh) 2/27/22: Too busy; cut Gremlin Units 11 and 12 (trip line pair, broken cable across chest, possibly falling over from sudden jolt) 2/27/22: Too busy; cut Gremlin Unit 13 (ECM unit, some large radar dish looking thing) EDIT: Maybe use older model (2018 or 19 ReaperCon entry) Gremlin Units 14, 15 and 16 (cargo units, loaded up with stolen supplies and headed out) 2/27/22: Too busy; cut Gremlin Units 17, 18, 19, and 20 (gun units) 2/27/22: Too busy; cut Gremlin Units 21, 22, and 23 (missile units) 2/27/22: Too busy; cut Gremlin Unit 24 (large gun unit) 2/27/22: Too busy; cut Gremlin Unit 25 and 26 (junked units; scavenged for parts?) 2/27/22: Not going to be a permanent camp, so no junkyard Gremlin Unit 27 (2nd style missile unit) 2/27/22: Too busy; cut Gremlin Unit 28 (personnel carrier unit) 2/27/22: Too busy; cut Wight Conversion Right Leg: cut from pelvis; reposition Feet: cut off both feet and swap positions since the tread is only on one foot Base: cut away from right foot, possibly keeping full base around left foot Left arm (maybe): cut gun into two pieces, having one falling to the ground after being cut by a heat lance/chainsaw rope Details to be included Camo doors at front leaving marks on the dirt path, but hiding the ambush from the main trail Pieces of old broken larger CAV units around 2/27/22: No longer a permanent encampment Wight gun cut in two, maybe showing inner details. May have to 3D print an add-on piece Dust being kicked up by the stolen crate (going to try using dyed cotton) IN WORK One cable snapping dynamically, with several bends and twists (superglue on thread?) Multiple vehicle tracks around camp Campfire and tents for people A latrine Other camp details (laundry, chairs, sports equipment, bored carvings, etc) Jungle Plants (V=Vellum cuts, B=bought, S=Sculpted, F=Found, P=Printed) Large lotus flower like plants, but dry land and maybe odd colors with a large conifer cone growing from the middle (V) Jester hat plant (balls on stems around a central point) (V) COMPLETED Spiky yucca like plant (V) Jagged leaf plant (V) Tentacle plant (V) Tripod trees (three spoke trunks) (V) Large palm fronds (S) Coral like trees (P) Horn tree (lots of horn shaped leaves from a central trunk) (P, V) Ball vine (like ivy but with odd leaf shapes) (V) Cabbage-like jungle plants with large wrinkled leaves (V) Fuzzy vines (thin wire coated with static grass) (S) Anything I can buy from N/HO scale train setups and painted alien-ish (B) Reaper figures that can be clipped and painted to be plants (B) Odd trees with strange leaf shapes (onion shaped) (V) IN WORK Random grass-like jungle plants (V) IN WORK Stem ends from mandarin oranges (seriously, pull one off and look at it, stem towards the ground) (F) Anything and everything else (VBSFP) Base mounting system Design and print modular tiles with bristles on top (basically, Bristle Block toys) Allows mounting of all the above jungle plants Fill in around plants with thinned plaster via a syringe to create the ground surfaces
2. Here is a group of tanks and such I painted for a customer..I think it turned out well.. the color would not have been my choice, but its what makes the customers happy...lol
3. Picked up a bunch of the CAV terrain before Christmas t use for CAV and/or 28mm sci-fi gaming. Have been working my way through it and thought I'd post what I've finished so far. 72607 Ammo dump 72608 Fuel dump 72610 Short Containers (3x sets) 72615 Bunkers 72611 Generators Generator with a couple of 28mm Warlord figures to show how it looks in that scale
4. Set aside some time for our 2nd virtual gaming convention coming March 26-27! 5. So I finally fell into the temptation and got my first ground based sci fi minis!(I do have spaceships.) A Cataphract, conquerer , and a halberd by Reaper minis came in with my horsman today! Sadly the halberd is missing a piece so it may in end up being returned. So my first order of business was a small conversion to the cataphract Before conversion And the conquerer has donated the necessary parts for said conversion, specifically his smaller missile pods. A bit of work with an exacto knife removed said weapons. And a bit more exacto work to make a spot for the pods on the Cataphract. Some super glue to assemble the cataphract and voila! It is time for paint! And don’t worry about the Conquerer, I have a conversion in mind for it too. It just might not be a true mech when I’m done....... More sci-fi stuff to come soon I hope! And maybe just maybe I’ll try to make a backstory for these guys. Thankyou for looking!
6. Brief word of introduction. I know next to nil about CAV. My current interest in it is solely from a painting perspective. With that in mind, please excuse any blunders I make. So, I'm a painter looking for some cool stuff to paint. I see CAV's mechs. I think "I like mechs, those look cool, I think I'll grab some". Then my eyes flicker upwards towards where it says "10mm scale". I think you can see where this is going. Long story short, how big are these? It looks like they come on 1" hexes, and $4.99-$6.99 is quite a lot to charge for a small mini (in my opinion, of course). Many thanks, all!
7. Hey look, yet another Jasper topic..... But this one is different (I hope). I actually have a time frame in mind, to get this finished before the end of 2020, and submitted for the annual diorama contest. I love dioramas, and I've been pretty happy with the few I've made. BUT I always put off getting started and then end up rushing over Christmas to get everything done. So this year I'm starting in January (if just barely) so that I will hopefully get some stuff done before December. I've had the idea for this diorama since the very first moment I saw my first "sneak preview" of Khanjira (that would have been approximately Fri, Oct 25, 2013, 7:57 PM ADT, according to when I got the email from Kickstarter). My first though was something like "What a beast! Imagine if he was fighting something from a smaller scale, like CAV...." So that has been bouncing around in my head ever since. Then I was messaging with @Pochi a few weeks ago about the contests and got talking about dioramas, and I mentioned this idea, and she said I HAD to do it.....so here we are. Basic concept is the classic Kaiju attacking a future city harbour. CAVs (any or all of tanks, vehicles, mechs, infantry, maybe even aircraft) defending. (I briefly considered going even smaller scale as I have quite a bit of 6mm stuff too, but CAVs are easier to work with, I have about a billion of them, and they are awesome). Today was a beginning. I grabbed some stuff and laid it out just to get an idea of a size I'm going to want. Obviously I just grabbed what was handy to get some scale. Khanjira is represented by my 7 days Khanjira (handy, that ). I plan to try to get him a little more upright, since he won't be on his base and at least his front foot will be "under water". With his pose (which I don't think I have the skill or know how to adjust too much) I'm thinking maybe an elevated highway that he has just crushed to be what his right leg is on. That or a boat of some sort....we'll see. The box is just a reference for the land, glasses are just some buildings. I'm picturing something similar to the Halifax waterfront with boardwalks or something and docks/jetties (the grey upside down drawer represents) and then big buildings. Army will be in place along the waterfront, so some barricades and stuff. Possibly a trench of energy blasted ruin from the "breath weapon" if I think I can pull that off. Again, we'll see. So just from the mock up, this is going to be fairly massive...like approaching 2 foot kind of dimensions Not something I would do if I was following advice on building award winning dioramas, but then that's not what I'm focusing on. I just want to make the image in my mind a reality, and I'm using the contest deadline to hopefully focus me. I'm also going to have to learn to do a bunch of new stuff for this, which should be fun! Step one will be to dig out my other Khanjira and start cleaning up up. And decide on what I'm going to use for a base for this thing.....
8. Finally sort of cleaned up my desk, so there's actually room to work again... Not quite enough room for hubby to work on his side yet, but we'll get there soon. ish. TM. Tentatively calling them the "Fiendish Flying Foxes" or something to that effect, but not fully certain yet hence the title not being as... fluffy as they usually are for me. Kind of want to sneak "fire" in there somewhere too (Fierce, Fiery, Flying Foxes sort of rolls off the tongue), but haven't quite figured that out just yet. ...And yes, I like alliteration, for some strange reason. Anyways! Been slowly collecting various CAVs, and since the race I like the fluff of the most currently isn't really available (at least until September-ish, aka Malvernis in the 3rd kickstarter) I figured I'd start with a Ritterlich group! While I do have the rulebook, I haven't really read it yet but it's on the to-do "eventually" list.... So I aimed to go with at least 2 of what I liked, and 4 of what I really liked. Seems to work at least for basics out of the gate anyways... Thanks to a package going missing for over two months (and being reshipped due to such), I wound up with a few more than originally planned in some areas ^_^;;;; So, just what do the foxes have, at least so far? Attack: 2x 72231 Cataphract, 4x 72050 Firedrake, 4x 72267 Rhino II, 4x 72283 Sabertooth, 4x 72273 Tiger, 2x 72278 Wolverine Fire Support: 6x 72282 Cheetah, 2x 72230 Silverback, 2x 72201 Tiamat Recon: 2x 72208 Cougar Extras as why not: 6x 72284 Enforcer (came as freebies, so maybe spoils of war? :P) Most are still in blister packs, but I do have five of them on the desk so far..... ^My first Cougar.... Who will also be the first, uhm... subject for my Vallejo terrain paste... ^Initial layout for the bases for my Cataphracts! ^My two Silverbacks, although I suspect more will see the table at some point because I apparently love missiles. Why the 40mm circular bases? Uhm, well... It's partially because I prefer circular ones, partially because they're more stable on 40mm bases, and also because there's more room to do basing stuff with ^_^;;;;;;
9. Greetings all as the summers now over I'm going to be painting again so I'm going to be painting an Adon Cav force theme that I've decided will be a jungle style Camo. I'll add to this thread as I did with the UTF force that I did earlier in the year http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/78751-cav-utf-painted-force-pic-heavy/&tab=comments#comment-1678472 so heres the 1st test batch that I'll be sorting A Mantis, Kestrel, Bishop & Ogre Cavs with some ground support from Some Chieftains, Commander I & Centipede ground vechiles. Thanks for looking hopeful to be updating soon (just got to paint 2 blood bowl teams up 1st for friends)
10. HI all I originally started a thread in the Cav section about painting my UTF (united Terrain Federation) I've had to change from photo bucket to flickr for the images will update the wrecked mech as well soon http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/73358-utf-possible-paint-schemes/&tab=comments#comment-1520048 Well I finally got the project on the road heres my test pieces almost finished just needs the bases finished off Started with an archer, raptor and Ronin Cavs with 2 ashigaru's missile vechiles did a base coat of purple with a dry brush afterwards then added camo scheme as per my other link with tester pieces of paper finished group quite pleased with the result look decent from a distance on the table no unit symbols or markings will decide on these at a later date
11. I had painted a flail as a test model, and then decided to do a group since it was an easy color scheme. had too many tags, but it's a pillager, wolverine, flail, outlaw, and poltergeist
12. WE ARE LIVE... https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/272456130/talon-games-cav-strike-ops-iii
13. This has been a while in the making, going back to Science Ninja Team Gatchaman (Battle of the Planets) when I was 3 or 4.... Anyway, I've invested "a bit" in "a couple" of big stompy robot kickstarters over the last few years. Over the last year a few parts of a couple of them have arrived, and recently I've had the urge to get started on painting some of them. Here are a few of the bots to paint. You see the early bird Ace from the Bones CAV kickstarter (in white), and the Bonus add-ons to the Wave 1 portion of the Palladium Robotech RPG Tactics kickstarter (in grey (Zentraedi) and brown/beige (UEDF)). I've also get Heavy Gear Blitz coming at some point. Oh and I do have the Oathsworn robots too...hmmm And I wouldn't be surprised if there are some others I've completely forgotten about. Oh, like the limited edition convention Robotech figs coming..... So as you can see, there are a few very different manufacturing techniques here (Bones, hard plastic, resin and metal so far), and ,from what I've looked at, painting bots is a bit different, so I'm going to go through the process and see how they come out. As I'm currently painting some bugbears and working on my fall exchange, my first steps with these will be assembling so regult battle pods and watching videos on painting bots. If anyone has any links on bot painting or suggestions on assembling these Robotech (like superglue vs plastic glue...) please feel free to post here. I'm also undecided on the realistic vs cartoony painting of the robotech stuff....thoughts?
14. This is a Cataphract mech by Reaper minis from Cav with added missile pods from a conquerer mech. Paints used: Vallejo paints white surface primer Olive Green Dark Brown Oily Steel, Gunmetal Testors paints, Gi. Red Flat steel Model Masters paints, Gun Metal, Burnt Iron Other colors Burnt Umber and Black. Man! I didn’t realize I used that many colors on this thing! Enough about paint! Time for pictures! I have enjoyed painting this up and even got to try something new. Thankyou for looking and feel free to offer constructive critiques!
15. Haven't post anything here for so long... I'm not really following any color scheme here, since I am not familiar with the lore of CAV at all (I'm more interested in the game). Also I wish I learnt a bit more about painting technique for glowing effect before painting the windows...
16. Greetings everyone, This is a call out for your Regiments/ Legions, what have you. If you have just an idea for your unit, pictures what ever else, list it here. I hope to see a lot of new units.
17. Terezinya was painted up to be a vampire character in my dnd game, the rest are fairly self explanatory. The translucent green Bones were given a coating of Grass Green India Ink and then had details highlighted out. They're retained their translucent quality while having better detail visibility.
18. Attached are photos of a slew of different miniatures and projects I've been working on in 2019. The Battleguard Golem is clearly a Warforged Paladin in my mind as was painted accordingly; he's mounted onto a Frontline Games base. The Jungle Titan is on the base of a Reaper Dragon I gave my son as a toy previously. The Galladoria Games entrances are both attached to Frontline Games Stones Dungeon tiles. The Terratiles are from a Kickstarter that started fulfilling last month; they were a ReaperCon vendor in 2017 and make good stuff! On the CAV Thunderbird and Raptor, I wanted to simulate some lights; not as much love for the Kahn. The Thunderbird was missing a shoulder mount so I subbed in a axehead from a long-age discarded figure. The Iron Golem has inspired a monster in my DND world called a Forgeblast Iron Golem and I wanted to simulate discoloration of the iron as though it is being superheated from within; I also wanted it to look as though heat was trying to escape from a few plate patches. Khai the Huntress from Bombshell is on a metal Reaper skulls base; I painted three of the skulls with a glowing green eye to add more interest. Like everyone else, just trying to be creative, get better and have fun.
19. Hey there, here's some of my Almirthil CAV's from the 7th CAV Guards "Never Fail" Regiment. With Almirthil have some "Soviet" trappings, I ran with it and used an olive-y green for my units similar to Soviet armor from the Cold War period! All logos and the bear mural are hand painted (the squiggle lines are numbers for the faction!) Concussion CAV (Fire Support) Bear(s) CAV (fire support) Growler CAV (recon) Rhino CAV (Ritterlich CAV sent to the Almirthil on a "Lend Lease" Policy) Tiamet CAV (Fire Support) (Ritterlich CAV sent to the Almirthil on a "Lend Lease" Policy)
20. Tldr This year’s SS exchange includes painters from both the Reaper forums and Facebook. You must be a member of one of these sites to participate but you do not have to join the other - unless you want to. Agree to the guidelines for the SS exchange (see below) Answer all of the questions below and PM them to the organizer (me) Paint your assigned miniature and mail it by the deadline Welcome to the 2018 CAV Secret Santa exchange in which we purchase, paint and gift a miniature to another gamer in the spirit of the season. The idea here is to have fun, get to know one another, and spread the joy of CAV:SO. :) Here are our simple exchange guidelines. Please do not sign-up on both the Reaper Forums and Facebook - use one or the other not both. Please keep the cost of your gift to the value of a single blister pack. Fill out the questionnaire below and send it to me in a PM. Please don’t contact your SS exchange partner unless I indicate that they are ok with this. I’ve included this as an option in the questionnaire. Please respect the privacy of others. Timeline We’ll accept sign-ups until October 15th. I’ll assign partners by October 22nd. A work in process photo of your miniature is due by November 22. Send the photo to the organizer (me) and I’ll share them to the various groups as appropriate. Ship your miniature in time for delivery to its recipient - December 17th if you’re shipping domestically in the United States. If you’re shipping internationally then you’ll need to send your gift earlier. When painting a miniature for your recipient please respect their requests. Some people love the idea of peppermint striped CAVs others are looking for something they can add to a serious force - keep this in mind. If you are mailing internationally don’t send anything other than the miniature unless your recipient has approved all of the extra items. Customs can be a difficult and complicated process especially for plant matter, powder, and other seemingly innocent materials. Please list only the actual cost of the miniature as the value on the customs form and list the item as a gift. Everyone who signs up must understand that Secret Santas can and do fail. There is no guarantee that you'll receive a model. Such is the nature of these exchanges. If something happens and you can not meet your commitment please contact the organizer (me) as early as possible. I’ll make arrangements to take care of your recipient. There is no shame in this… life happens to all of us. 2018 CAV Secret Santa exchange questionnaire Mailing Information [Your Name] [Your Full Address] Miniature Information [A list of models that you would like to receive in the SS exchange.] [Desired paint scheme and basing - please be specific. 21. Finished two more miniatures toward the end of 2018. I'm just kind of painting anything I can to work on getting better. Mechs are REALLY new to me! I wanted to paint the Nightshade to remind me of a Romulan Warbird. The Skeleton Knight on Horse was a lot of fun mostly because it's just a series of Vallejo washes with some Reaper MSP to do final highlights.
22. The Malvern's Obake is a 8 DT Attack model with dual light autocannon's and four medium guided-missile launchers. It is designed to add a long-range option to an Attack Squad, sitting back and throwing GMs at anyone unlucky enough to show themselves and using the ACs to dissuade any lurking infantry or aircraft from inserting themselves close by. It can also be used in a Fire Support Squad to give it a little close-in support. With TAG, an Advanced Targeting Comp and a Wizzo to help out with fire missions, the Obake is sure to find a home in any Malvern Force Group! What's your thoughts? A lot of people don't give the Autocannon much credence in CAV: SO until they come out of the wrong side of one! With the Full Auto SA, even a light AC can punch through the toughest of armor with a little luck. For example, let's say the Obake cuts loose at a Hard Armor 8 opponent at medium range (a base to hit of 7+) with both light ACs (RAV 1) on Salvo with a Target-Lock. That's a total of +3 to-hit Situation Modifiers (+1 for Salvo, ATC, and Wizzo) with a roll of "6" and "1." With Full Auto the Obake decides to re-roll the "1" and gets another "6" making it a critical success and adding an additional 1d6 roll (a "4") to add to the Combat Roll. So, now the final roll ends up being whopping "19!" That 12 more than it need to-hit, combined with the weapon's RAV of 1, making the MoS +6, resulting in 2 DTs of damage!
23. Had some questions come up over on FB so I thought I would post the answers here for everyone to see... 1. So any CAV can use the "target Lock" action not needing LOS. This would be required to fire Guided missiles. A target lock only gives a +1 or +2 to hit if they have the Advanced targeting computer 1 or 2 respectively or does the target lock give a +1 and then the target lock computer (1) would be a net total of +2 to hit? 2. If a CAV has the SA: TAG it can use its target lock action and paint a target. Is that target painted for ALL CAVS in my force (IE back line fire support), just for that CAVS squad, or just for that CAV? Does it need the SA: EST to share the TAG target lock? Los is NOT required to use the Target-Lock Action. The Target-Lock Action or TAG is a requirement to use GMs (which would require LoS to shoot them). An Adv Targeting Computer is NOT required to use the Target-Lock Action (as every non-infantry model has at least a Basic Targeting Computer. The Adv Targeting Computer allows for the addition of a (+) situation modifier equal to it's rating level (the Target-Lock action does NOT add anything) to a direct-fire combat action or an indirect-fire strike point roll. TAG can also be used to fire GMs and can be activated by the use of a Special Action or as part of a Combat Action (LoS required). As long as the TAG is valid (the targeted-model does not move out of LoS or the model using TAG is destroyed), ANY friendly model in the Force Group can benefit from its use. EST is NOT required as TAG is a physical element that is used by the ammo of the weapon system being used. 3. If i take Smoke shells as an upgrade for a CAVS gun can I target open ground with them to make a smoke wall? If I target open ground do I just place the smoke markers where I want or is there an attack roll I need to make? Only artillery can use the Smoke Shell upgrade, but yes you are always targeting a point on the ground with an indirect-fire weapon system. You are still required to make a strike-point roll for the targeted location with a failed roll resulting in scatter. 4. Do doctrines apply to Tanks and Aircraft? I thought i read something online that said if you take 4 CAVS and 2 tanks in an attack squad that that one squad could not take a doctrine. Yes, factions do not mix model types (other than in a Special Squad). So the only way you would have an attack squad with this mix would be a non-faction based force group (such as mercenaries) which cannot use doctrines. NOTE: This applies to a "true" faction force only to make it valid for the sake of faction doctrines. You could build an all-Templar force and mix and match model types and still call it a Templar Force Group, it just isn't eligible for faction doctrine bonuses.
24. Thought I'd post my recently completed pair of Commander II Anti-Grav tanks painted up in the ADON Regiment 45 "Bone Collectors" scheme!
25. Its time to paint CAVs, mail them to people, and have fun. Link to the sign up thread below. http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/82710-cav-secret-santa-2018/ J--
