  1. I finally have six fighting CAV armies - some more fight-y than others. Some have enough models with enough variety to meet diverse challenges, and some are just barely legal if you squint right. Case in point? Here's my newly painted Ritterlich army! Notice a complete lack of infantry, aircraft, fighting vehicles, transports, and for that matter, primary squads.* But recon and artillery? Got that *covered*! Anyway, here's a glimpse of my boys in blue. They won't see much growth until next year when CAV KS II gets here, but they will see play because, hey, rhinos right?
  2. Hi all, I continued painting my Terran CAV force in my simple desert GDI-like scheme. I added the Big Guns Thunderbird, Fire Support Raijin (very nice sculpt) and the tanks Wolf. Raijin: Thunderbird: Wolf: Incremental Force Group Shot: To be Continued...
  3. Hi all, With the new CAV2 Kickstarter ongoing, this motivated me to start painting my Terran force from the 1st Kickstarter. Paint job is my regular army "speed paint" quality, where I'm looking for the best look requiring the least amount of work. I decided to go with a more "desert" look to get these miniatures to look somewhat like GDI unit, so they will look nice when pitted against my Nod-like Rach force. (Rach Force: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/68610-cav-so-bones-rach-force-completed-reaper-voodoo-more). Falcon: Raptor: Vehicles: Incremental Group Sh
  4. Hi, I finally decided to sit down and complete the last models I have from the KS for my Rach Force in my NOD-like colour scheme. So I completed, 3 more Krakens, 2 more Dictators, 1 Voodoo and 1 Reaper. I only post detailed pics of the new models: Voodoo: Reaper: And the final group shot of my Force: C&C always appreciated
  5. I had a productive night! I primed these a few days ago, and just got down to a nice solid 6 hours of painting tonight. Coffee + podcats + painting = my little slice of heaven! Alas, I can't keep my eyes open any longer, so I'm calling it a night. I still have some highlighting do to on the metallics, and I still have to base them, but I think they're close enough to showtime to show off. Also, yes, it is Junebug season here in Michigan, and my current paint setup is in the garage. Little buggers were all over the place!
  6. Hi everyone, I just picked up three packs of 24536 Heavy/PA Infantry and had a few questions. 1. Are the four minis on each sprue grouped to go on each base? 2. Are all infantry bases made up of four minis? 3. How many bases of infantry will a normal battlegroup contain? Thanks in advance!
  7. Alright, tonight is my first proper large game of CAV - Two buddies and I are playing tournament-style, "pick-your-force," that is to say I've built three, 6000 point forces (Adon, Templar, Malvernis) all with distinct playing styles. BUT ALSO we are fighting it out on a 6x4 sci-fi city! I haven't made any major changes since the last time I posted pics of about 1/3 of this thing, so the roads are still unmarked, but honestly I just want to get playing. Battle report to follow (probably), but pictures NOW!!!
  8. Are there any rules, restrictions, limitations, or suggestions for demo-ing CAV if I'm not a COG? Honestly I don't think I have the time or travel budget to do Reaper proud as an official rep, but I do have a TON of CAV models and would like to help support the game, especially at our local (Southeast Michigan) relatively big con, U-Con. If someone is already repping CAV at U-Con, then it seems like my work here is done, but if not, how should I go about getting involved? - V
  9. Just a quick post with a single pic - last week my friend and I had a tough time getting through 6,000 points, so we scaled it back a bit: 5,000, two squads each, no upgrades or specializations. We got a lot farther, but we still couldn't finish the battle in two hours (though it was getting to a sort of spillover point - kills were starting to pile up, CAVs had moved into their best firing positions, and so on). Anyhow, only managed to snap a single pic at the beginning of deployment, and it's not great, but: HILLS! I took some time off from working on my dissertation to build six hi
  10. Here is the first set of 20 bases to be painted for my Rach and Terran armies for CAV and or Horizon Wars. These models were bought from Vanguard Miniatures. There are a few choices of models within the UK and these were picked up on a bit of a whim to see what they are like. Not sure the best way to paint these, but I decided to base them all first, the bases have 5 slots for the models to fit which is very helpful. I then added sand and sealed them with glue. This was left to dry and then the earth colour was painted. This is as far as I have got before the photo was taken. A
  11. Here is a quick selection of models to be used as infantry for CAV or Horizon wars the models look very nice next to the CAV vehicles. I have painted them very similar to my last Rach models. As always comments welcome
  12. So definitely a work-in-progress, but getting very near the point of "I cannot look at this anymore without screaming," I present: CAV CITY! Details follow the pictures for any interested parties. DETAILS: This is a 4x2 section of game board. Full-size, my board is 6x4. I have enough road and buildings to cover the whole thing in a decently dense city section, especially if I throw in a tree-filled park, hill, or river. Buildings are blue electrical boxes spraypainted with "windows' painted on. Road is Styrene sheet painted with stone
  13. Has anyone noticed that those brown plastic inserts in chocolate boxes, when flipped upside down, look a lot like industrial storage tanks and bunkers?
  14. A quick question posted here because I'm not sure it would get a response in modelling / converting (etc.): Does anyone know the exact diameter of the hole in the bottom of the flying Bones CAV fighters? It looks like 3/16" or about 2mm, but I wanted to see if anyone knew for sure. I'm using steel washers and brass rod to mount my fliers much higher than the stands provided - I want them to look like they're well above ground (probably about 6-8 inches up). Thanks in advance!
  15. I already posted the first one here: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/69074-cav-kraken-space-pope-style/ This one is done up exactly the same, except that the purple and teal are reversed! I wasn't quite as tidy with this paint job, because I'm getting a little tired of straight lines. The underside: And here's the side-by-side comparison pic: Fun little paint jobs, but I'm ready to move on to new things now. Huzzah! --OneBoot :D
  16. Hey everyone! Finally got around to finishing up the final details on my terran wolf tanks. This is my third real attempt at using OSL on these guys and I think I could have done a better job. I just can't seem to make the light reflections "pop" on these models like I could do on the other ones. OSL gurus, any tips for making mine look better? Maybe having more of a gradient? Tried for awhile to get it to look right but I am missing something. The only thing I struggled with was where to put the star. All the stars are going on red sections and are centered on the mode
  17. I had a lot of fun painting up one of my Kraken planes from Reaper's CAV Kickstarter. Nothing fancy, just solid basecoats. I was having fun playing with colors while doing Google Hangouts with forum members. (the purple is a much darker, richer color in person; I think my lighting washed it out and brightened it some) The underside: Colors used: Grey Liner Twilight Purple Solid Black 3:1 Tropical Aqua:Clear Green I've never painted an inorganic mini before, there's so many straight lines and edges! I think it came out okay, though; I'm really liking t
  18. Hey all, Lost some sleep last night to finish up these Tsukai for my Terran legion. I wasnt sure how to approach them at first but I really happy with how they came out. They fit in well with the rest of the force. I had particular fun jeweling the cockpit. Take a look, and as always C&C welcome!
  19. Hey guys, Here are some more kickstarter goodies from my budding CAV Terran force. These were actually the first models I painted from the CAV kickstarter and were the color prototypes for the terran color scheme I went with. They aren't completely done (the central panel will be re-painted red with the white star I have been giving the others). But I am happy with them! I also really like how CAV has an assortment of vehicles and walkers which makes a force dynamic looking. Here's what is painted (both finished and WIP) so far: C & C welcome!
  20. OK, this is my last post for tonight, I promise! I did paint another Mech, the "Talon", today, but my pictures came out way too dark, so I'll save that for another time. You can see him lurking in the background of some of these. Instead, here is my Tsukai Armored Personnel Carrier. This is my first attempt at camo of any sort, and while it's really simple, I feel like it works. I welcome any comments about how to do it better. Is it wrong that part of me likes these non-mech units from the CAV line better than the big stompy robots?
  21. Hey guys, So after getting the kickstarter box, the Talon was the first CAV I painted. I wanted to get something big as the baseline for my color scheme instead of a tank or APC. Of course, being the first CAV there were a few issues. The original red I chose was an awful contrast to the yellow and had to be painted over. The highlight layer for this cav eventually got tossed for a different combination, so this big fella looks a bitt different than most of the other force. I have been painting for 15+ years (and terribly for most of that), but in the past year I have tried t
  22. Hey everyone! Newbie here. I got the CAV kickstarter box a few weeks ago and have been really itching to paint something with hard lines for once (old 40k tyranid player). I decided to start with the terrans because I bought planes, tanks, and CAVs from them so it would give me a nice wide range to get comfy with. I decided on a theme similar to that of the imperial fists from Warhammer 40k- yellow with red accents. As I went on, however, the scheme changed more and more until it became a much more rugged desert theme. Take a look: I didn't choose a very time-efficient pai
  23. Hey everyone. Got the CAV bones kickstarter a few weeks ago and have really been itching to paint some BIG STOMPY ROBOTS. I decided to go with a yellow and red theme for the terran vehicles and CAVs. The original inspiration was the Imperial Fists of 40k lore, but it has evolved into a much more worn looking desert theme. Right now I am working on some Wolf tanks and Tsukai APCs: There are quite a few steps to them: 1) Airbrush white, then airbrush with a basecoat of 3:2 butternut yellow : nutmeg brown, AKA UTF khaki 2) Airbrush with UTF Khaki 3) Ink wash with GW
  24. Hi all, I finally painted the Ritterlich Republic CAV's models from the Kickstarter. I started the force 1 year ago when the first Early Bird models came in and now I just finished with the 2 Silverbacks and Cataphracts that were added. The paint job was a bit rushed, and I had to stick to the colour scheme I chose way back... Not the best, but I'm still happy to call them done. Cataphract: SilverBack: Group Shot: I added some Halberd CAVs from the Grand Order of the Temple with this Ritterlich's force, as there weren't many Attack CAV in the Rit's selection from the Kickstart
  25. I wasn't sure where else to put this, but I was looking at the data card for the Knight (the iconic Templar CAV) and noticed that its LBGs are listed as L/R and its flamer is listed as R, meaning that the doubled-up weapon in the right arm is actually a combination flamer & laser, and the unique weapon in the left arm is a flamer. I always pictured the unique weapon as the flamer and the paired weapons as lasers. Of course, the way I just described it, there is a "stage left vs. my left" issue...the unique weapon would be in the CAV's right arm. Again, super minor issue - just t
