  1. Back with part two of the Skeletal Monsters set! I thought of adding some mold/moss to the bones on this, and I used an old terrain trick of mixing flock with PVA glue. It looks alright, but I don't think I'll be doing it on the last one.
  2. Hey all, been a while. Quick job from Bones 4. Added a saddle, threw on a Mantic Soul Reaver cavalry rider with a head swap from Puppetswar.
  3. So I've been painting a lot of character models and low level monsters lately, so I decided to tackle a large monster. I pulled out the bag with Bones manticore, chimera and sphinx and lost my mind, deciding to paint all three. Then I acquired the Bones Black efreeti and could not resist painting her as well. First up the chimera 77257. I should have taken another photo of the front of the model from a higher angle so that you could see the eyes of the dragon head but I was too lazy. I did not notice the blob of white paint until I uploaded the file. Isn't that how it goes? Maybe I'll get around to fixing it, but I'm already plotting what to paint first from Bones 4. I spent all that time painting the striations on the wings and didn't do any highlighting on the belly scales of the dragon, either. Manticore 77577. I have another, older manticore model (I know, shocking) from Grenadier that I painted with the more traditional dark bat wings. I wanted something different and I have been itching to try an idea I had for bright new copper, like a shiny new penny. I painted the wings and scales with Reaper MSP Coppery Orange and then over painted the webbing on the wings with the old Ral Parta Metallic Red. I like how it turned out, and Iron Wind Metals is again selling this paint, however only at conventions so far. In retrospect brass dragon wings would have been better, but I can always buy another one... Oh, and this model is the one I used the Culture Hustle Black 2.0 as a primer on the base. No difference in performance from Reaper MSP Black Primer. Sphinx 77576. Not much to say about her except be careful when trimming the mold lines on the ears; I lopped off half of the left ear and had to do reconstructive surgery. I really like the sculpting on the wings and the base is a really neat small bit of terrain. The nice thing about Bones is that they are cheap enough to by them for just parts. And finally the efreeti 44003. My color scheme was heavily inspired by (shameless stolen from) Wren's magnificent work on the store display model. You can't improve on perfection. If anyone is interested in boring technical details I did something different with the skin tones for this one. I wanted the bright red skin to appear almost like it was glowing, as befits a fire spirit. I primed the model in black and then painted the skin with a burnt sienna color. I then did my first layer of high lights with Reaper MSP Pumpkin Orange (because it was the first orange I found in my bin), and then the second high light with an ocher yellow, and the final high lights with a pale yellow, Ral Partha Blonde as it turned out. Once that had dried I over-painted the entire area with Ral Partha (sorry, IWM) Red. One of the interesting properties of the IWM paints is that they are rather translucent. This gave me fits for years back in the 80's when I first acquired them as RP paints at Gen Con; I paint for table top and prefer my paint to be opaque for quick coverage. However I slowly learned that I could get pretty smooth transitions with the RP paints by applying several layers of the paint in smaller and smaller areas. It also works pretty well out of the pot for glazing over a pre-shaded area. Overall I'm happy with the result. The cloth was painted with a burnt sienna, high lighted with MSP Runic Purple, edged with MSP BCA Pink and glazed with MSP Clear Magenta. For the sword blades I was going for obsidian; seemed appropriate for a fire creature. Painted dark gray, edged in white, and glazed with black ink. I hope you like them and thanks for looking. I wonder if I can call in sick tomorrow to stay home and paint...
  4. A few touched up prepainted minis. I touched up a few of these a year ago, but today I decided to bring out the green stuff and stamp some new bases for them. The chimera and darkenbeast are from the D&D blind box minis. The peryton, falcon, and ruffian are from Pathfinder battles. The falcons were complete repaints, as the original was a brown falcon. I wanted an "eagle" with a celestial and demonic template, as our summoner was using them extensively at the time. I tried to make sure that the peryton had two different bases, as the paint scheme on them is identical and its nice to have some differentiation on the table so that you can track who has what damage. The falcons and the peryton are all "grasslands" stamp that I just painted differently!
  5. Manny & Manfred the Manticore Brothers. They've teamed up with Goreflame the Chimera for a bit of Town baiting.
  6. Hi, Here is my take on the Reaper Chimera in Bones. Mine was pretty wonky and wasn't responding well to boiling water, but I still like the sculpt very much. I re-based the mini on a 50*50mm square in order to use it as a "Beast of Nature" for my "Kings Of War - Forces of Nature" army. Paint job is my standard army quality, but I had some fun on the base with some putty and water effects. I'm trying to get most of the bases in this army to be a bit scenic.
  7. I just finished the Chimera from the second Bones kickstarter. Bones seem to work really well for relatively large creatures like this, though I had to fill some pretty big gaps. I liked the challenge of making the three heads look distinct, but still part of the same creature. I stuck to a fairly standard color scheme: relatively natural colors for the lion and the goat, and the red dragon fits well with that color scheme. But I made an effort to harmonize the colors together. And I made the eyes of all three heads the same (though it's a little hard to see), so they look like they are all part of the same creature. Enjoy! Comments and criticism are much appreciated. I like to get better. Do you have a lot of bones and no idea which one to paint next? Me too! Come join us at Caffeine Forge where every week we paint a different model, and then discuss everyone's different version. There are a few nice people who join in regularly, but the owners are lonely and are looking for new painters. You still have a couple of days if you want to paint your Chimera, but there will be a different model next week too. I enjoy painting as part of a group.
  8. Here's my entry for this years huge reaper minis competition. We've already gotten to use him in our campaign with my little one (the mouslings mostly fought him from the inside after they got swallowed). I decided to go with a strong light and dark composition for him- I honestly think he matches the Iron Kingdoms dragons pretty well. If he had a head plate over his eyes, he'd fit right in with everblight warbeasts (except that he's a whole lot bigger).
  9. Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the forums, I'm here to unload another batch of my old enamel paint jobs from around 15-25 years ago. Fire Giant Bonesnapper Satyrs Gorgon Kobolds Umber Hulk Rust Monster Chimera Bulette
  10. What's got 3 heads & goes "roar", "hiss" & "baaaaaa"............? This vintage Citadel "Chimera"! I based my colours on the description in the 4th edition AD&D monster manual but changed the dragon head from orange to red. Interestingly, this mini never had wings. Thanks for looking.
  11. Had a fun paint session with family on Saturday. My brother-in-law and his daughter have never painted a mini so I asked if they wanted to join in as my daughter and I painted something. They had a great time. Even the brother-in-law who got so into it and when anyone asked if he was having fun would just say "it is something to do". My daughter chose the Brass Bull: My niece chose the Chimera: And the brother-in-law was given the Sharkman: He already has plans on what he wants to do next weekend to finish it up. So we will need to get him set up at the table once we are back from Reaper HQ. A pic of the girls enjoying their paint session: I continued work on my metal Dire Bear when I was able to do so. Between helping out where I could and keeping the girls from trying to pour out their own paint I got a few swabs of the brush down.

  13. Not my best work or pics. An OOP model from Harlequin ( GW alternative from the 90's). Still I like old minis. So here he is ( again, due to account trouble I;m reposting my work).
  14. To complete the set, we have the dreaded Chimera and the Brass Bull.
  15. So I'm considering in the near future painting an old Ral Partha chimera sculpted in the eighties by sculpting goddess Julie Guthrie. Here's my dilemma: should I paint each piece of the beast according to its natural color ( lion part tawny brown, goat black/white/grey, and dragon red/green) or do I take an approach where I would paint the whole figure red with a black mane? Opinions from the peanut gallery would be extremely welcome! Thanks, Mark
