This was originally a birthday present last year, a fairly simple German resin ship kit for a medieval-style cog. Since I was playing a Githyanki in Dungeons and Dragons at the time, I modeled, painted, and sewed the vessel up into a more or less spelljammer, since named Black Moon's Bane from events in the game. There is a fairly detailed Work-in-Progress thread for this ship, if anyone has questions about materials or techniques. Or you can ask here; that's fine. A list of materials: Resin ship's hull model, wooden dowels, bamboo chopsticks, bamboo kitchen skewers, acrylic paint, brass wire, silk organza, silk taffeta, wooden furniture peg, jewelry findings (barrel clasps, jump rings), jewelers chain, metal necklace charms, glass seed beads, waxed linen bookbinder's thread, waxed linen carpet warp, silk buttonhole thread, cotton twine, metallic polyester yarn, nylon cord, screw eyes, 1/2" zinc fender washer, various glues The bowsprit (left) is a bamboo chopstick painted and wrapped with brass wire. The hatch on the deck (right) looks down over a forested landscape. The ship's rails are painted with (imaginary) red runes on black, then washed over thinly with silver metallic paint. From some angles the rails look silver and the runes are invisible. From others they show clearly. The ship's wheel (visible at the upper deck on the stern) is a charm bracelet charm with the hanging loop filed off. I nailed and glued it to the post (made from a furniture peg) so that it spins freely. It is mounted on a small fender washer so it can be moved around the ship. The runes around the door to belowdecks are imaginary. I may think of more stuff to say later. Right now I'm a little dazed.

Hi, i saw on amazon a paint mixer/stirrer that its similar to the ones for drinks or coffe, only this one is for hobbist paint, its brand is badger. I custom made one that its really similar to this one and actually fits inside reaper bottles. I just used it on some reaper and vallejo paints that i have for a while, some of them especially the vallejo ones were kind of gummy with pigment on the bottom, i used my custom stirrer and solved the issue! . Thing is, it works very well, but on reaper i feel as if it makes the paint less dense, and in some colours like pale saffron and lemon yellow this is more evident, is covers well but feels a little similar to watercolor in its consistency . Maybe its because the stirrer is quite potent and spins very fast, so wanted to ask help to anyone that have experience using a stirrer for mixing paint and also ask Anne Foerster or some people that actually work with the composition of paint, if any of you are seen this, please help ! ;) will really appreciate it. If i use this product can i harm the reaper paints that i have? Also on the other hand mixing the paint like this can have any positive effect as well? Hi folks, Decided to take a break from CAVs and make some treasure tokens after seeing a tutorial I on here. Although I cannot find where the original tutorial is now (edit: you can find it here http://http://www.reapermini.com/TheCraft/33). These two took two hours for my fiance and I to make. I'm generally happy with how they came out, although the one lesson that I learned is that you need to make anything that sits with the gold very, very bright. When I painted the gemstones and the weapons I thought at first that they would look too ostentatious, but after adding the gold they kind of get drowned out. I also need to add another layer of dark wash to highlight the difference between the coins. But this was a fun project and I can see myself making more in the future. C&C always welcome!

Hello everybody! Some time ago I asked on a suggestion for placing a thread about alternatives to many materials that you modellers in the "first world" use and take for granted, but are more difficult to find when you are away (and shipping ends up being more expensive than the material itself). It was suggested this subforum, so here it is where I am posting. But I intend to make it even more than a simple "materials alternative" thread. As I thought about placing it in the WIP subforum, I realised... all these tips and stuff are very intimately related to one particular Work In Progress: myself, as a miniature painter/modeller. So, I cannot warranty entertaining posts, but at least a dumping place for a lot of stuff I came to realise, mostly on my own, and that can perhaps stir in you, fellow hobbist (hobbier? urgh), an urge to try something, if you haven't already. First, a word of caution: my native tongue is Spanish. In many ways Spanish, as a language, is more twisty and flowery. Please forgive me if my English, other than being grammatically wrong at places, is also full of twisting sentences. Sometimes language is more a rhyme than a simple statement; if you don't understand something I say, please, speak up and let me clarify. To start, allow me to -briefly- describe myself. I am Argentinian (Argentina is a south-american country waaaaay to the south, reaching into the South Pole area lengthwise), 32 years of age, married, one daughter, and a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. I work in an airline, corporate official, which allows me to browse the web when the job is "slow". I love airplanes mostly because of their grace, of their aesthetic glory. That some fascination comes with certain forms of art; and since I could never draw well some time ago (about 10 years ago or more) I did some miniature painting (stemming out of my RPG hobby; I've been deeply involved in that for about 15 years). I was never that good, but I loved to learn about techniques and trying to apply them. I converted every Space Marine I was about to paint (and that is the reason I never had more than a dozen of them painted). I painted alone, for I could never find a group to paint with, to learn and share ideas. But of course Internet is there to teach us, in a way. This is the first community I actually post to because it is so nice, and so full of people not only willing to teach, but also willing to learn. And I find that is when you do not fear to give your opinion of something you learn the most, out of your own suggestion, and out of other people's. So, sorry for the lengthy intro, and soon I will be posting about alternate materials, and things I find valuable in this modelling hobby. It goes as a given, but anyone that feels like sharing, please do. Take over the thread if you want, the more stuff for thought/experimentation, the better!

So, Bryan suggested a ton of little threads rather than one massive thread, and some people who showed up on that massive thread made it clear they were non-painters. So, how about suggestions for fun ways to decorate the Bones minis which aren't too hard for non-painters to essay, assuming that they may not wish to put in all the time and effort and money on supplies to learn how to paint 'em. Basically, it's for people interested in differentiating their Bones on the table without doing full blown paint jobs. And for anyone looking at this thread alone, please wash the bones with warm water and liquid soap before doing any of these. For example ... Glue colored glitter on capes or armor or other notable areas. Decorate with Sharpies or other permanent markers (but keep the minis away from bright light afterwards because permanent markers do fade).

So in preparation for the arrival of the ks bones I recently ordered some craft acrylics, specifically these . Now I have read on some other sites about people complaining that craft acrylics have a smaller "pigment/medium ratio" than model paints because you have to dilute the craft paints more. So first question, in your own experience how true is this statement? And second question, if the above is held to be true, could this not be remedied by just using more brush strokes when painting? Also since im on the topic of using different types of paints I may as well ask this: Is it possible to use both craft and model paints of the same mini or does this combination go horribly wrong? Actually this question should be asked in two parts. First when talking about using the two on different layers, ie: craft for base/shading/highlights and model for details or any combination of base/shading/highlights and detail between the two types. Second when talking about mixing the two types of paints for creating custom colours?
