Hello fine fans of fantastic miniatures! So I can't tell you exactly when, but months back Dark Sword Miniatures put out this miniature, two hobbit scouts one standing on the other's shoulders sculpted by Bobby Jackson, an obvious homage to some old Grenadier halflings sculpted I believe by Andrew Chernak back in the early eighties. As soon as I saw this miniature I immediately thought that all fine fans of old school miniatures would be buying the new version and then painting them both up to happily compare the two. Well, until now I hadn't seen any such "explosion" of comparisons, so I figured maybe I just need to be the first. So here is the most recent Dark Sword version, sculpted by Mr. Jackson: and here is are the original hobbits, sculpted by Andrew Chernak back in maybe 1982 or so?: and here they are side by side: I tried to use as much as possible the same or similar color scheme in each version. The only thing that did happen is that there is a Dark Sword version of the hobbits scouts one on top of each other with two separate cloaks, but I accidentally grabbed the one with a single cloak only. anyhoos, enjoy this blast to the past and let me know what you think!

So I'm working on a really small figure a newish Tom Meier Halfling Druid from DarkSword Miniatures. I painted the eyes and was kind of satisfied with them but one seems to be bigger than the other, which means I think I painted the black first outside of the target eye that was sculpted. One eye is okay the other one it too big: so when we get really close to the figure I can see how uneven she is, but she is really, really small: So my first general question is, would this be enough to frustrate somebody to repaint? So with this in mind, the "good" news is I just went from a nice pair of magnifying nerd goggles that go up to around 2.5 to some other ones that I have sitting around that are 3.5 x magnification. So I almost feel I have a good enough view of the eyes to edit it a little bit. I'm just wondering if it's all worth it? Any suggestions?

I did two new things for me on this one. Played around with cloth texture by crosshatching it in. And tried a new tool, an eyeshadow make-up brush for drybrushing along the feathers. The brush was amazing! I wish I'd gotten one sooner. Previous to the make-up brush I've been using brushes that are less fine or older and beat up. And they just don't lay the color on as fine and delicate. My eyes have been opened to a whole new world of possibilities, haha.

Hello everyone! Major post today, I completed the Cat Critters display base. I went for a simple arrangement this time. It’s a thematic chest-like display board. I opted for a Roman style setup; mosaic pavement tiling, marble pillars and royal purple flowers. It was interesting to work with different product from many companies on this project. The CatCritters are from Darksword Miniatures, they were all sculpted by talented David Summers. Here’s for the technical information; The marble lions are from Reaper Miniatures, 77341 and were Sculpted by Geoff Valley. The pillars are from Wizkids. I made the pavement texture using a Green Stuff World rolling pin. The background wall was made with a Town Square from Tabletop World. The cavalry base I mounted the lion statues on are from Games Workshop. The synthetic grass and tuft are from the Army Painter, Woodland Scenics and Green Stuff World. Lastly, I made the vine-like tree with real roots. To build the board I also used a pine plank, Masonite hard board, Milliput, Jovi Plastilina, Green Stuff natural stones and sand. To paint the models and the display base I used Reaper Miniatures MSP paint and Citadel inks. Each model was mounted on a 50mm base. I painted this as a gift for a good friend who loves the Easter Bunny and adventuring (she loved it!). A little reindeer moss and some colored ground foam from my model railroad foliage and the bunny is ready for a quest. I took a lot of inspiration from Jessica Rich's studio paint job. The variety of bright colors was a lot of fun.

This is probably the reason I don't finish miniatures to quickly. I decided to begin prepping up a figure from another KS I backed. The 3 figures in this pack are in parts and rather fragile pieces. I also had to look at the photo to see which pieces and how I'm going to have to put them together. Here is a shot of Angelica - the Half-Elf Warrior in pieces.

Strong Belwas from Darksword Miniatures. I had a better paintjob going in my head but in the end this is what I ended up with. I probably should have made his shirt and pants a different color, but I don't know which.

And because I shouldn't miss one (I did have a run on the critters) this is one of the dark sword miniatures critters from their latest kickstarter. these are a little more posed than the Oathsworn critters but they still have a lot of personality and can add quite a bit of fun to the workbench. (especially after 54 tyranids in 12 hours). this fellow has learned the art of fighting and drinking and become a true expert. I had a good time with the reds on the tunic and tried a little bit of freehand on the inside of the cloak. Styles and patterns on clothing don't come easy for me as I prefer my clothing rich toned natural and unpatterned. but this guy was just begging for a little color on the inside of the cloak so I gave it a shot. Enjoy!

With most everyone having received or receiving in the next few days, I'd like to open up a thread for EVERYONE in a Group/Open WIP thread. Although I won't be doing mine until after the current projects are off my desk with time constraints, I can see quite a few of us really wanting to paint these up. This is open to EVERYONE and ALL the new DSM Stephanie Law Masterworks figures. Feel free to post up your WIP here and most importantly... HAVE FUN!! P.S. Let us keep chatter to a minimum and only about these figures.

I've been a fan of this mini since the first time I saw it but still it took me some time to buy it, and almost even more time to gather up the courage to paint it. It didn't quite end up the way I wanted it to (I don't have that good brush control) but still it turned out kind of nice.

I finished up this lady earlier this week. I was originally intending her to be a bit higher quality, but she was very accident prone so I decided to settle for high tabletop level. High tabletop is where I want most of my minis to fall, so that’s perfectly fine by me. Hopefully my “high tabletop†will increase over time, but this is a good example of what it means to me at the moment. There are some spots I’m proud of (skin and brown), and others I got frustrated with and moved on (armor and blue). I did a teensy bit of TMM on her swords. Actually, her dagger was a victim of my her clumsiness and the “mid-tone†is polished pewter with no paint at all. Here’s the best closeup of the face I could get. Darksword Miniatures have really tiny eyes, so I was unable to get as much detail in there as I would have liked to. I eventually had to accept that I couldn't do any better after repeated attempts.
