  1. So... not having enough WIPs on the go already, my box of Bones lovelies arrived and this happened. The plan is to paint him in blues/whites/greys and MAYBE have him breathing something cold onto an opponent of some sort. Digging through my Bones and the Reaper website for ideas so he might end up on a nice frozen landscape trying to fend off someone. Currently leaning towards a knight with their shield forward or a wizard of some sort. Once the Green Stuff cures, he'll get a thin coat of blue liner and then the real work will begin while I search for his opposition. Thanks for looking.
  2. Here is my finished "spirit of the forest" diorama. Including a bones bird familiar and metal squirrel familiar from 02756. (The axe was from a Frostgrave plastic sprue - cultists or soldiers?) wip is here Pics Oops - meant to put his in show off. How do I fix it? Mod help?

    Ghost Story mini-diorama

This was started as a small-ish side project, but ended up being a big-ish project. With a lot of new things for me. The ghost is an old mini that I painted many years ago, and was quite happy with at the moment. And as I started up in this hoppy again, I thought I might build a base for it. I wanted it to look dark or low-light, so used a bit darker colors as I would normally have used, but I still wanted to use colors. I'm really happy with the result, I think it's the best piece of landscape I have made. And I learned a couple new things. A big thanks to all that commented and came with ideas and helpfull tips throughout the process. The Wip thread is here. Figures used; The Ghost: I think it is an Ral Partha, as most of my minies from back then seems to be, or does anyone recognise it? Skeleton: 77018 Reaper Skeleton Archer set, converted. Skulls and grave stones: Ristuls. Vegetation: Army Painter turfts, Noch and some home-made from an old brush. Tutorials more or less followed; Hanging moss on the tree: http://laughingferret.blogspot.com.au/2011/04/to-z-spanish-hanging-moss-tutorial.html A lot of good stuff: https://daggerandbrush.wordpress.com/

Edge of Oblivion - an ub3r diorama!

EDGE OF OBLIVION After many miles climbing the mountains of his homeland, Torgar the Barbarian had finally caught up to the two thieves who had stolen his family heirloom, his grandmother's axe which had been used to cut the head off the great orc chieftain Yarvak. He had found their trail and followed it through the blizzard. He was raging after he had shown them hospitality and drinks, they had slipped a drug into his drink and stolen the artifact.... Now was the time for the reckoning! "VENGEANCE SHALL BE MINE!!!!" Roared Torgar, after taking the head off the first thief and showing it to the other. "YOU HAVE NOWHERE ELSE TO FLEE TO LITTLE THIEF, HERE IS YOUR EDGE OF OBLIVION!!!!" The lone dwarf dropped the artifact and realized his folly, he could jump off the cliff to his death or have his head removed from his shoulders like that of his friend... -------------------------------------------------------------------- This was a really fun project, it took me a while to get started on it and took me a couple of weeks to finish as I wanted to make it a display piece and be able to enter it into a couple of contests, one of which will be ReaperCon 2017. Torgar the Barbarian, Limited Edition 72mm resin figure from Terrible Kids Stuff Random Encounter! 54mm resin figure from FER Miniature Base scratch built out of bark and milliput along with frit and snow flock Shoutout to Thrym for putting together the placard for me! "The Hunt" Mousling Diorama

This was my second diorama that I did for ReaperCon 2016. I started toying with ideas after the Mousling Award was announced and originally pictured a few Mouslings in a cave, totally oblivious to the spider on the ceiling. This changed when I was sorting through some burl wood and came across the piece that I used. I used wolf spiders as my inspiration as they like to make their home in holes and so rather than a cave, I had the Mouslings hunting the spider in a field. It just came together perfectly and I had a blast painting them. I am so addicted to Mouslings now. "The Hunt" MSP Open Mousling Third Place
  6. This was one of my diorama entries at ReaperCon 2016. The idea came to me while watching Once Upon a Time and seeing the "Troll" bridge. This bridge is a toll bridge in Storybrooke that someone renamed Troll Bridge. I was then looking at Dark Sword's Critter Kingdoms Anthropomorphic line and came across the Horned Toad Assassin and thus the Toad Bridge came to be. It was originally going to be a larger piece with a troop of three or four facing off against the toad but it would have taken up most of my carrying case. So it got shrunk down and became just the cat against the Toad. The name also evolved into "Contention of Ownership." "Contention of Ownership" Silver, Diorama, ReaperCon 2016

    Teaching Your Dragon to Fly

This is what I painted for Teskeria for the 2016 Secret Sophie exchange. She said she liked dragons and the colors purple and pink. I started with the green dragon hatchling, I wanted one that looked like it was attempting to fly, and this one seemed to be sitting up and paying attention. I built up a little cork hill for Cassie to be standing on, demonstrating with her staff and her arms thrust wide. The base has little hillocks covered in static grass. The bushes and flowers are real dried miniature plants that I pulled out of my dollhouse supplies. Both figures are removable for play. Hope you enjoy!
  8. Sculptor: Bob Ridolfi I fished this cute girl out of the Box o' Goodwill from the Reaper forums, so it's only right that she make her way back to another forum member as an exchange mini for Secret Sophie 2016. Tricksay wanted to receive "open to anything"; I love when people pick that, because I can just paint whatever I feel like. Thanks to Bonwirn for giving me a bunch of Hirst Arts blocks to make the diorama out of. After I took these pictures I realized: OMG, you can't even see the rear half that I spent so much time on. Despite the chance of ruining the mini, I carefully drilled a magnet hole through the bottom of the base so she can be removed. I threw in a gaming base as well for picture taking purposes, and just in case Tricksay ever wants to use her in a game. I was joking with my friends at paint day that "no, those are her adventuring clothes; convenient necklace, weird skirt-thong and all."

    IMPFESTATION by Glitterwolf

Not all was peace and quiet in the forest. Lately a group of little demons had infested the place. These Imps, Hordlings or whatever they were called, harassed the little animals, the fairies and they damaged the trees and the mushrooms. Even the Grand Mushroom watched in horror how they terrorized the Forest, but he could do nothing. One day the Imps captured one of the fairies and beat her up. She could barely escape and she fled crying. Almost leaving the forest, she came by a small dirt road, and she noticed a cart coming. Quickly she hid between the bushes. A wizard passed by, contemplating his latest spells, a cart filled with supplies. The donkey pulling the cart, was in no hurry it seemed. Slowly it passed by. The fairy looked at the cart, she sneaked into the back. The wizard didn't notice the little fairy rummaging through his supplies, he was too caught up in his spells. Suddenly the fairy noticed a bottle, the label said: Gigantic Growth. Feeling her blood rising to her cheeks she stole the bottle and hopped off the cart. She went back into the forest. The Imps saw her coming and started laughing. Clearly this one hadn't had enough! The fairy drank the potion, all of it, and in a moment she started to grow. One Imp said...this can't be good! The next moment the fairy had her revenge, she trampled the first Imp into the ground and chased the others. Even the Grand Mushroom felt sorry for the Imps now! For those interested WIP here: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/71076-impfestation-by-xherman1964-mushroom-fairy-and-imps/ Components: Base - was a gift from the Awesome Knarthex! 11. This was done for a fun competition where you were supposed to recreate an album cover with miniatures. I chose the Army of Darkness Official Soundtrack. It uses the same art as the Movie. :) All I can post here is a WIP, pic. The rest, as well as the final result can be found in the links below, due to nudity.: WIP / photobox images: http://i.imgur.com/nnpwbFv.jpg http://i.imgur.com/9du3P58.jpg http://i.imgur.com/ntIrUGC.jpg Final result. There was no way to fit all nine minis, along with the scenery in my photobox, so the colours / paint suffered a bit in this one, but all in all I am happy with the result.: http://i.imgur.com/WPU1HEI.jpg
  12. Wizards of the Coast's Dungeons & Dragons Fire Giant Stalking the Steps This 25mm scale Fire Giant isn't humongous by today's miniature line standards but he has a lot of character. The sculptors, Chaz Elliot and then apprentice, Jason Wiebe, put a lot of great detail into this fellow. I personally love the knowing grin on his face. However, partly because of the scale and the sculpted position of the giant, I felt he wasn't set up right. So he was reposed a smidge. When I first looked him over at the work table, I held him on a slab of slate and tried to visualize him on a game board. It's fairly obvious that he was originally meant to be looking down at the puny humans before him but against the more prolific 28-32mm scale miniatures I own, he was looking at their chests or groins. So after playing around with slate pieces such, I finally figure him out. He needed his sword level. Well his arms were tight to his chest so repositioning the weapon that way would require practically resculpting him. But ... if I cut apart the integral base and and changed the elevation of his feet he looked like he was slinking up some stairs. Thus the step and repose. You can check out his painting WIP. The repositioning and base construction was done a long time ago before I was doing WIP posts. Enjoy. Added to Thrym's General Show Off List

Christmas gift with frog and chicken.

It started last year, when stonehaven offered a feathered dinosaur and a frog knight. I decided to make a diorama of one of my wife's fav jokes. Since it involved a library, it would be perfect for her to keep on her desk at work. the frog knight didn't work out, so I got a different frog from reaper. I got as far as priming, and starting a base-coat on the "chicken". In December, kicked the project into high gear. WIP The Joke
  14. Hi all, Crazy idea that has been floating around my noggin for months now is finally starting to come together. Never done anything like this before so we'll see where this leads. Cinder, with gaps filled with green stuff. Her legs are a little bent so I can't quite attach her to her base so I'll use the terrain and pin her where she needs to be. Cinder, 2 hatchlings, some quail eggs and tree bark (rocks) for some of the landscaping. Plan is to have to eggs sitting on a pile of treasure. Going to hit Michael's to see if I can find a suitable base for it otherwise I'll be using cutting something out of some MDF for the base. I had thought to make this "tiered" and have an adventurer climbing up in search of the treasure but I decided to reign myself in as it's my first diorama attempt. Thanks for looking.
  15. So things were a little rushed in getting this finished a week ago, and I never did have the time to do a proper show off... And as final assembly didn't happen until Thursday afternoon..... and the results.... Thanks for all the fun, comments and following along with this!!!!!! George Forgot to link the WiP.....

    The Councillors

As I have been working almost exclusively on my diorama project, I have not been posting 'Finished' pictures of the models here.. So now that I have finished the 4 PC types I have decided to post them here. I give you Xanathar the Beholder's 4 'Councillors'... Slan Thurbal: (Decided that I don't have time to change HIS left hand....) Slink Monkester: Ott Steeltoes: Shindia Darkeyes: Group Shot: An approximation of their positions in the diorama, with a Intellect Devourer added... Thanks for looking! And for all those cheering me on, a one time use Gaze Reflection Dweomer! George
  17. A little while ago I purchased Hasslefree's "Fairies Wear Boots" piece. The Gothic Punk like Fairy stomps on candy. Now I kept thinking that it would be fun to have her chasing little Imps and stomp those into the ground. So I got me some little familairs and stuff from Reaper. Then Malefacus ( Al) send me a wonderful Mushroom he sculpted. To top things off, Knarthex ( George) send me some stuff including a nice oval wooden plinth. Thinking about it all, I realised I now have the ingredients to start on this piece. The Idea is the Fairy chases Imps and Stomps a few into the ground. Maybe she swallowed a growth potion or something. Now she can finally have her revenge on those pesky Imps! The Mushroom watches the whole scene in horror. I will not use all these Imps/Demons, but I will take my pick which will suit the scene best. To complement the large Shroom, I will include some smaller resin mushrooms. Painting will follow later, but here are the ingredients:

    A thought for ReaperCon 2017....

Okay prepare for lengthy thought..... (Before it dies of neglect and loneliness....) Whilst on the hangouts over this weekend, the old "dungeon romps" that we used to do in these threads was mentioned, I believe by Adept Legacy. As we batted the Idea around, we wondered if people would be interested in painting up their "Forum Personae" for use in a diorama. It would go something like this, (Maybe) People find a mini that they feel represents them self in their "forum personae" IE A Drow Elf for myself, the axe toting Barbarian with an INT dump stat for Ub3r, a Jedi Hamster for David B, etc (you folks get the idea!) and paint it up by ReaperCon 2017. (That would give us over a year.....) Someone (Some group?) that builds terrain, and lives close enough to Reaper HQ to be able to transport it there, could build some dungeon terrain of various sorts to place all of the minis on as our erratic, eclectic, eccentric adventuring party..... (Hopefully with a mushroom patch or two.... ) (Size to be determined by number of folks that 'sign up') Everyone brings (or mails for those that can't attend) their contribution to the thing, and it is set up there for us all to look and smile and remember things.... Then, everything gets donated to Reaper for display in their corporate HQ, as a THANK YOU! from all of us for hosting such a wonderful Insane Asylum forum for us all to play in..... Would anyone be interested in doing something like this????? And does Reaper have a place that they could display it? Maybe it could become a yearly thing, that new folks bring "Themselves" to add in, and if folks change their personae, they could change their mini too! I can only imagine some of the possibilities.... (Certain 'people' sneaking and peeking from air vents for example.....) George
  19. Right. This project has been kicking my butt, but I'ma gonna kick it back! The idea originally was to use Monique from the master series minis range and do something involving a bunch of critters attacking on her command. I gave up on that because I didn't feeling like that much sculpting. Then I remembered I also had Magnus. Hmmmn, I thought. I do love that Dire Straits song "Romeo and Juliet" I can just see the scene now... ...finds a convenient streetlight (check, I can make that), steps out of the shade (oooh, paint a backdrop doorway?) and says... well, you know how it goes. So, the downside is Magnus is a teeny bit smaller than Monique. Never fear, I said. I can just do some forced perspective, move him more to the foreground and up on a set of steps and put some vines/plants in front of Monique to make her look smaller. I'll also do some fun contrast with the colors and OSL on him to make him stand out more. That'll work. What this has done though, is made me work with a larger space than I wanted and do a heck of a lot of styrene scenery. sigh. Plus, his sword? Not very romantic to be holding a sword while courting. I can sculpt a little heart shaped box of chocolates though. Hmmmn. At any rate, enough talk. Pics! instead of the bouquet I'll probably just do a single rose and have the bouquet at her feet. You can see the size issue. Also, let me just say, it would have been so much easier for me to resculpt his face first. I spent about 2 hours trying to get the expression changed into the dopey almost-tangled smoulder and ended up carving off his eyebrows in the process. It'll pass, but I still need to fiddle with it. this was my first mock-up and sketch for the background. Behind him I'll paint a doorway and wall. I set the pillar of evil in place of Magnus since he's less fully painted. see my cute chocolate box? That was fun to make. The lantern I made out of styrene and spent the rest of the weekend getting the glue off my fingers. kindof the plan anyway. But I'm not liking the background at all. I knew it just wasn't right. so I re-planned as I painted. I'll add in a fence in the background with gravestone and some ruins. Much spookier. The only thing I'm not set on is the tree right now. I'll need to change the shape and move it back father and put something else in the foreground. But i'm using the same colors for her mini. I'm debating taking all the brushstrokes out and making it smooth versus my typical style which is to be much looser and more impressionistic. Right now it's all just sketched in with paint. I'll say on composition for pieces like this, I think about the flat space as having a fore, middle and background. Most paintings divide these up not completely evenly. I tend to put a "horizon" either significantly under or just a bit under the center of the space, leaving my fore and middle ground to share less than half the real estate. I think this balances nicely for the most part. Anyway, more soon. I'm going to try to make significant progress this weekend.
  20. Greetings! I finally finished my mini diorama featuring a classic Goblin Chieftain's Chariot (FTG13) citadel miniature from "the olden days". I had a lot of fun painting & creating this & I learned some new things along the way. If you would like to see how it was created, the WIP can be found here. Thanks for looking, comments & critiques are always welcome!
  21. Need somewhere to keep my dwarf army. Thought to build LED underground small garrison fort/outpost. Will have 4 floors Magnetized bottom floor for large models And will try to stuff as much detail as I can. Began with a wooden simple frame, and 2" PinkFoam. Was debating to build up all details and then paint it at once, or paint it in pieces and install them into the box as I go. Do to the nature of the LED lighting, and much uncertainties with LED lighting, I decided to craft it piece by piece instead of all at once. Also, I do not have a good way to cover very large, hard to get to, very detailed area with coats of paint very efficiently, thus will take slower path. Have some plans how to dress up the outside but want to leave that part for last.
