  1. I want to give my girlfriend's parents a little gift this X-mas ( well a bit before that). So I decided to make a little vignette of the Nativity Set. I found this nice dome for 5 euros.. I had to skip the idea of the three Kings. But my girl explained to me that they visited later, so it wouldn't be a problem to just use the Nativity set itself, a sheperd and a few animals. Else it would get too crowded on the little wooden plate. The Donkey and Oxen are supposed to keep Baby Jesus warm with their breath. So that's why they stand so close. The Cow will be mutilated converted into an Oxen. Here is the set up. I might have to move them a little more forward to close the gap. **** But Herman December is a long time away! Why start now?**** *** Have you noticed how slow I paint?***

  5. Hi everyone, First of, if this is in the wrong section please feel free to move the topic to the right section, but my guess is this is the right spot. I received an email today from E2046 about the annual contest for figurines, dioramas and robots. I thought to post it here since a lot of real talent is roaming this forum and maybe some of you are interested in joining this competition. Rackham - Ral Partha diorama

This is a diorama I made in 2002. The quality of the painting is not as good as I can do now, but I am still happy with it. The ladies are from Rackham and the beholder is from Ral Partha. The floor and wall were made with hirsts arts blocks.

    Damned Desolation (Diorama)

DAMNED DESOLATION She stood before the undead, calm as a frozen winter lake... the zombies and skeleton advanced, their hungry eyes boring into her own, yet she stood still, her Staff of the Twin Suns raised and a prayer upon her lips... The lead zombie took one more step upon the magical rune and suddenly it and its companions were blown back, the earth erupted and the small canal of sewage rose in response to the divine power that was unleashed by Velicia Torynn, cleric. She shoved them all back against the wall to end their undeath once and for all... She couldn't stop now, she had others to help and other Damned to Desolate... -------------------------------------------- Here we go, I loved the cleric figure so much that I decided to go ahead and build a diorama around her as the star of it. The premise came into my head that she uses Divine Magical Runes of protection and destruction to desolate the undead. Figures: Lady Faelwen Nightsinger (her own show-off for more pics of her is here) Adepticon 2015 Exclusive Sculpted by Patrick Keith of Bombshell Miniatures Zombies are Reaper Bones Zombies Skeleton is Reaper Bones Skeleton Rat is Reaper Rat that I got from the boneyard, so I can't link it now. Crate and Barrel are resin pieces from Oathsworn Miniatures WIP for the figure (and the vignette) C&C are welcomed and greatly appreciated! Thanks for looking
  8. Hi all, the title sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, but I don't have a punchline for it... This diorama was inspired by an old model kit of a Citroën 11cv that I received as a kid and only recovered recently. I never built it and completely forgot about it until I cleaned my parents' attic while visiting them. I finally built it, and it dawned on me: The scale of the car (1/43) would fit well with some of Reaper's Chronoscope bones models! It would look awesome in a Diorama! So who would be a good model from my Bones collection to go along this old Citroën? A Nun of course! So Sister Maria (80028) it is! Now I had to explain why she had a gun in her hand... Well because of Zombie Apocalypse of course! So I added a pair of Mantic's zombies in the mix. Though, I didn't want her to be alone to face zombies. So I added the Bones Ninja (80032) in there because... well... Ninjas are like bacon: They make everything better. So there it is: The Nun and the Ninja were traveling on a countryside road when they saw a pair of Zs roaming in the field nearby. They stopped there and decided to clear them out. But since bullets are a precious commodity in these times, the Nun would be distracting them allowing her stealth partner to chop them off from the back. Some details: C&C welcome. And suggestions to name this piece are greatly encouraged. Thanks

    First Diorama!

So, I had a copy of this guy sitting on my desk with a few bits painted. I decided to make a little diorama using him and some other models. The barbarian's part of a statue that will be the centerpiece of the diorama, with some townsfolk going about their business and some bored guards. It's late now, so I'll post some sketches and painted minis in the morning.

  11. RAGE AGAINST MA'SHEEN Torgils knew he had to hurry, his rage fueling his mighty thews as he raced down the steps into the evil wizard's sanctum... he encountered a large iron bound door and without hesitation he laid into it with his axe, the door fell before him like wheat before a scythe... Standing before an ancient altar of evil was his nemesis, the vile wizard Severus and upon the altar was a beautiful young princess... He raced into the room as Severus spoke the incantation to bring forth the Elder God...Ma'sheen... time seemed to slow as Torgils raised his axe on high and rushed forward to do battle... For this piece, I wanted to create a scene that would evoke the essence of Conan and give a sense of action and danger. Some of you followed along with my WIP of it and saw the evolution, gave me valuable feedback (thank you!) and finally I completed it in time to enter it into the Las Vegas Open, a local convention with a painting competition. I entered the "journeyman level" as I'd never won any contests before and was awarded a Gold Pin for the piece. Which, from what I understand, is a lot like Reaper's medals for individual works. Figures: Torgils "the black wolf" from Catacombes Le Regne Sombre, sculpted by Fancagne Didier. Severus from Enigma - ENM3038 Altar of Evil w/ Victim - Reaper SKU 02580 (didn't use the candles) Arms from Eldritch Demon - Reaper SKU 77113 Tentacles from Reaper's Creature Components - SKU 03334 Scratch built shelf and desk Special thanks to Thrym for doing the banner/title for me to be placed on the front of the piece. C&C are welcomed and appreciated, thanks for looking!
  12. Okay, prototype number one completed. Time for another. THE SINKING KEEP So after reviewing the previous thread other ideas I decided I really want to make the keep. I found the six-inch cork round and roughed in the water and then cut away the cork where I had drawn water in the picture. Then after finding an appropriately sized tube to create the tower, I transferred the shape of the tower sticking out of the water using a stencil I made from the drawing. Then i outlined the cut tube on to the cork and cut away the inside edge to seat the tower piece. After tweaking the cut and the fit it in the cut space I added to a small bit of elevated ground to either side. Here's what I have so far... The cork elevations are just super glued at the moment. But once I shape the slopes of them I will seal the cork with glue. Stay tuned.
  13. This was a thing I did for my girlfriend for Christmas. She always refer to herself as a sloth because she likes to sleep, and is a fan of Sid from Ice Age. :P The base is far to big to fit in my photo-case, though:

    A Christmas Carol Diorama

Finally finished this. The OSL isn't quite as stark in person and the shadows are darker; that's an artifact of the flash from the camera.
  15. Here is Maria Roseblade from the Reaper Master Series. Hope you'll like it. WIP is here: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/62239-30007-maria-roseblade-pirate-queen-54mm-xherman1964
  16. I started this as a Halloween project. Things got in the way and now it is an autumn piece. Any way I had fun. I bought a ceramic Pumpkin, converted it into a house. Reaper's Elise Witch http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/elise/latest/02869And Freebooter's Chaos Witch both sculpted by Werner Klocke are conjuring pumpkins. These are now wandering off into the world to cause mayhem, The pumpkins are part Ristul's Market and I used the Owl on a Pumpkin from the Reaper Halloween Familiars http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/Special%20Edition%20Figures/sku-down/01548 And I added the great Halloween Tree from Reaper: http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/halloween/sku-down/03692 Hope you like it. Some Pumpkins are a bit in the ground, so they are emerging.

    A light for dark days

This was a difficult piece to finish. Not because how difficult it was, but it is the first mini I painted since the death of my friend. I had already started this and decided to make this in a gift to his widow. She is a very close friend and I wanted to give her something to support her. The text means: "A little light for dark days". It still is a difficult time for me and is a very emotional piece. The mouse is the Dark Sword Mouse Mage. I made a new tail with a lantern with an led light. Behind the moon in the window is another led light. The box I bought in a craft store and I made the inserts. The insert in the lid first had a window, but I changed that so I could place the text there.
  18. So here is the Wip for my Fall Exchange.... I took a lot of pictures to ask for advice and opinions from a pair of Forumites*, and posted them on Photobucket. So I needed to paint my exchange figure with only 1 bottle each of Red, Blue, Black, and White. Everything else I had free run of the paints... For the Golem, who was the Exchange piece, I used Scale 75 Cantabric Blue, and Blood Red, as well as VMC Black and White. I had just gotten my new Raphael and DaVinci brushes, and started using a wet palette when this began, and Thank the Gods of Paint that I had! These were the inspirational pics I used. The plan was that the torso of the Golem would be Red, the hands, feet, and head would be Blue, and the colors would fade through purple on the limbs. I then mixed the blue and red at a 1-3 ratio, and it was so dark that I ended up adding white to the mix. Ithen painted the middle parts of the limbs. I added a little white to the paints and tried to bring out the 'faceting' on the figure and then I started carefully glazing the blue from the middle of the limbs to the extremities, and then the red from the middle toward the torso. (There are 40+ pics, so link to photobucket) After the many many many glazes were done, I sprayed everything with dullcote 2 or 3 times, as I was happy with what I had achieved, and wanted to be able to wash out any forthcoming errors. And there were errors! I started at the feet, trying to edge every facet with white, as in the inspiration pics above, and was constantly wiping away errors, cursing at myself, etc and moving on... Finally, after 4+ hours, this is what I had: Somewhere in there I had done the eyes and the teeth.... That's how he looked when I was done with him, less basing. Funny thing was, I never even opened the Black paint! All shading was done by using the red on the blue, and the blue on the red! I had also been working on Balto, but that was a relatively normal paint job, except for the fact that I got to go crazy with all the new Scale 75 paints I had just gotten. The Pillar of Evil was a Bones piece I got at The Complete Strategist, (the BEST Game Shop in Manhattan! ) as I was running out of time, and needed something for the golem to be smashing.... That was also a normal style paint job, lots of greys and dry brushing.... Anyway, I planned from the beginning to base them both on pieces of slate, as I had used it before for a dragon, and liked the look. So the Golem and Gnome got based... (Link to Photobucket) I planned out the diorama, and then started execution. The holes for the bases were carved out of the stained wooden base, and green stuff was applied all over the rest, with more bits of slate pushed into it, being careful to not fill in the holes! (Pics when I get home) I'm home... Then painting with Desert Yellow, magnets installed, and washers glued into mini bases. Tufts of Silflor Grasses scattered about, and finally the whole thing was covered with white glue then sand. So there you have it, how I did what I did. Any questions, comments cheerfully accepted! 8) George * Take a bow Vegascat, and especially our own resident Barbarian, Ub3r_N3rd! Poor Ub3r, he must have gotten 2 or 3 pms a day from an over anxious drow about how to do this, or how does that look, or... He was the soul of tact, and a fountain of knowledge! Couldn't have done it without you! G Edited to add more pics... added link to show off

    Fall Exchange for Leopardpixie

Hey Folks! I drew Leopardpixie as my person to paint for, and she put me so far out of my comfort zone that I have no words to describe... From her 'In Brief' Do you have a particular color scheme in mind? Lets make this interesting - challenge your self and use only blue, black, white and red (ONLY) challenge your color mixing abilities. and this means Only 1 bottle of each color, not multi bottles of various reds / blues etc... Now I am the type that buys their paint in 'Triads" long before Reaper started selling them that way, as I like having the same color to go back to when I have to fix mistakes. Even with a recipe, I still wouldn't be able to make exact matches.... So I paniced for an hour until I got home... So I dug through the pile of lead, and came up with the Crystal Golem. As I looked at it, I thought maybe I could get away with what she wanted with this mini... I also decided to do a diorama, which is where Balto Burrowell, and the Pillar of Evil, came in. The Diorama title in my mind was always "Golem Smash!", as Balto is telling his creation to do something about the item of Evil he has come across... I should have put a plate on the base saying that... Many PMs to Ub3r later here is what I sent: The Diorama The Golem: The Gnome: Also some pics of the packaging: The inner box: the last thing into the box: Better pic--- The bases all have washers in them, and the diorama has Rare Earth Magnets in it to hold minis in place, but allow them to be used in games as well. (Next time I will find bases with vertical sides for this....) So many thanks go out to Ub3r_N3rd for all the advice and patience! Thanks for Looking! 8) George Retro-Active WiP here. Going to get another pair of these guys for myself.... Edited to add more pics and link to WiP
  20. I started building a display piece, a vignette, diorama or whatever you want to call it. It will probably be too late for Halloween but then it will be a Fall / Autumn piece. Reaper 02869: Elise, The Witch and Freebooter Chaos Witch,, both by Werner Klocke will star the show. The idea is they live in this Pumpkin house ( obtained in a garden centre, added a plastic door from a board game) and they are conjuring spooky pumpkins. The Halloween tree stands next to their house. So here are the first pics.
  21. Hi! I'm feeling a little bit guilty as I haven't posted anything in the "show off" board for a while because I am putting all my energies into my current WIP. So, today I was looking at some mini projects that I painted a while ago & I thought that you might like a look at one of them here. This Lord Of The Rings themed diorama is something I did about 10 years ago when the films were first released & GW were producing the minis. The diorama depicts the moment just before......... well, I'm sure you all know what happens next? I won't spoil it if you haven't seen the films yet. I'm not good at sculpting so I kept it pretty simple. Before painting, it's just air drying clay for the ground, the rocks are actual stones & pebbles, the big rock (I think) was a lump of broken brick & there's a sprinkling of sand for some extra texture. An eagle's eye view: Finally, some close ups: Thanks for looking - please feel free to leave comments, I'm always happy to hear them.
  22. I had a new idea for a diorama with this mouse from Dark Sword. It's tail has a lamp on the end. It looked like a good subject for conversion to a working lamp. So I will make a new tail with brass rod and green stuff. I found an old HO railroad street light and cut of one on the lantarns. The original lamp is not usable. It is 16 volt and gets hot. I want to use a battery so I will add a 3 volt led light.
  23. Anybody who has followed one of my other WIPs knows just how slowly I work. The Warlord faery I painted for ReaperCon took me months to produce, and it is smaller than the average 28mm figure. It should, therefore, be completely reasonable for me to wander off and sketch out this diorama concept: Right? My plan is to try to build a two-piece diorama around Narthrax and Barros on Tempest. The two sculpts are practically begging to be placed in some kind of classic knight vs. dragon battle for the ages. This will be my first real diorama, but I figure the two models have a clear, iconic story built right into the sculpts. All I have to do is avoid screwing it up. So far, I have done some dry-fitting, and I have started to clean the mold lines from Narthrax. My current plan is to bring Narthrax up to a "paintable" level of preparation, and then do the same for Barros and Tempest. All that's done, I will work on the base. It's going to take some engineering to make a base that will support both figures nicely. Right now, the plan is to build this thing on a wooden 8"x10" oval base that I picked up at the local craft store. I expect to work on this project off and on for quite some time, with the hope that I can find way to transport it to ReaperCon 2016. (Air travel may be a problem there.) Let the madness begin!
  24. I really love the Stephanie Law line from Dark Sword Miniatures and Euterpe may be my favorite from the Kickstarter. She was among the first three I prepped and after ReaperCon I started to put some paint on her. I did post a couple pictures in the WIP group thread for the Stephanie Law pieces, but wanted to be careful as I planned on taking her to Gen Con and their rules ask that you do not post finished pictures prior to the show. Her foxy friends were already seen in this thread http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/62924-dark-sword-standing-kirin-and-a-few-foxes/ prior to basing of course. Without further ado here are my best photos I could manage. I spoke with DixonGrfx at ReaperCon about Euterpe and was toying with the idea of painting her with sheer cloth, I am glad I decided to go ahead and try more sheer as I feel it worked much better the second time around and worked well on her. Her base was custom built on a wooden block that I took a hacksaw to the corner and added modeling paste, cork, putty and dental plaster rocks. Overall I am quite happy with how this piece turned out and I look forward to painting up a few more muses. Comments and Critiques always welcomed.
  25. I always start my WIPs too late. This is my first scenic thing, normally I paint/build for game use exclusively, but my wife wanted a little scene with the mouselings from Bones II. This is somewhere in the done to done-ish range, but I've not convinced myself yet. I think maybe the tree needs more bulk and I'm mixed on the grass. I feel like a few tufts of color wouldn't hurt. Maybe some flower tufts? I still need to stain and seal the rim obviously, but I'm waiting until I'm finished so I can tape those sections off and give a light spray coat to help things stay put. Is there maybe something I could do to the bush/tree material to give it more color depth? Will it take paint well? It's the Woodland Scenics stuff usually used for model train terrain. Any other tips or advice would be most welcome.
