First of all, I have lots of people to thank for inspiration. This particular piece, the dilapidated fort, was directly taken from a project at Onyx Workshop. My other major inspiration is Le Golem Qui Reve, a French fellow who has been doing Sandgrave for a number of years. Check out his amazing blog. (If you're going to cite sources, it's not plagerism, right?) This one was done using Hirst Arts Egyptian moulds: Floor tiles, sandblasted pyramid and regular walls. My go-to colours are P3 Rucksack Tan for the base, washed with GW Seraphim sepia. The bricks are done using a variety of tan and off whites available at the dollar store. The whole thing is drybrushed a cream, then flocked. I use regular plaster of paris and wood glue, with Aileen's tacky craft glue for the flocking. I use so much of the sand base I had it custom mixed at the hardware as a gallon. House paint stinks for minis, but it covers sand really well. The sand is locally collected from my yard. To create the chipped look, I used a dull hobby knife blade and hacked at the wall. I'm very happy with how this looks and it has become my new way of making convincing ruins. The ladder is a leftover piece from an MDF kitbash. Each of the straight blocks is 1" long. The base is a piece from Charlie Foxtrot out of the UK. He's an amazing guy to purchase from. I believe it is from bases set one. I will admit I screwed up when I made it, it should be 5 inches long to accomodate a full unit for Wargods, which brings us to... The minis are Crocodile Games. They have shields, and as part of my spring cleaning of the paint desk, they will soon receive them. The metal (or bones) mummy warriors complement this range very nicely, being comparable in size and asthetic. If you aren't fussy about duplicates, choose the bones version. The metal version seems to me like it could use a new mould --some of the detail seems shallow.

Guess we're going to the jungle!

Okay, with Reapercon coming up I will be running some Stargrave & Frostgrave games. So I have been in the position with transporting BOXES of minis and terrain before, and even though I have a truck, I thought that there might be an easier way to carry the stuff. Both of the 'Grave games are heavy terrain and while this is part of their charm, it will be much easier if I can limit the number of boxes going to Texas with me. Then the other day in Hobby Lobby, I was trying to figure out how to build this stuff, when I found their collapsed gift boxes. Perfect! And CHEAP! So I hit them with some variety of spray paint and then used the Plastic Mesh for windows after they dried. I am a bit concerned because I tried good old Elmer's Glue and I am not 100% confident in it's ability to work on the plastic of the mesh. So, everything is drying tonight and tomorrow will be the acid test when I try folding the boxes into their flat configuration. Anyway, here are the pics as I went along.

Hard to believe, but I actually got a few hours of painting in the past couple weeks and finished some minis. Most to toy box standard for my Kids Hero Kids adventure. I am probably going to add some flock/bushes to the base of a couple of them. I was sloppier on the Bones minis due to the dang mold lines and soft features. First a group shot. For the scenery a Bones Candelabra by Bob Ridolfi (77138) and some portals for Massive Darkness (I have around twenty treasure chest I need to finish the trim on as well….soon) These two minis have been base coated for a while. The weakest of the group, but good enough for the adventures. 14329 Street Thug, Mercenary Grunt by Bobby Jackson and 30026 Pirate with Treasure Chest More Bones. 77140 Townsfolk Village Rioter by Bobby Jackson. 02583 Female Server from Townsfolk 1 by Bobby Jackson. 77396 Olivia Female Cleric by Werner Klocke (I like this mini, but not the paint job I achieved). 77206 Friar Stone Human Monk by Tre Manor (this one suffered from Bones due to a bunch of extra bits of flash. Even so I like the final product and wouldn’t mind getting this one in a better material in the future). 02950 Townsfolk VII Clergy by Bobby Jackson. And the easiest is Knight from the 77673 Knight of the Realm by Tim Hill. A nice sculpt that filled in as animated armor. And some metal minis for Frostgrave from Osprey Minis. I really like the FGV343 Ballista II Construct. The two FGV303 small constructs will probably be gifted to my kids characters for saving the wizard when his constructs went rouge.

I don't play Frostgrave — I'm not even sure what it's all about — but I thought these figures were cool.

So.... Cinder didn't work out for my return to hobbying, so I decided to try something a bit less ambitious.... Reading back through past projects, I saw one of the hangout minis of the month was Blacktounge, Gnoll Ranger from Reaper, and remembered that I had picked up this set at a paint day with the New England Miniatures folks at the Citadel games store.... I figure if I can follow my old WIP, I won't be stressing to much, and I will have another figure to add to the Frostgrave warband that was started so long ago,,,, So the 2 got assembled and puttied, and now the never ending search for minor mold lines can begin when the putty is dry... thanks for taking a look! Wish me luck!!!!

I put together this Barrow from xps foam and a decopage cardboard treasure chest lid. I used a greenstuff world roller to texture the doorway and landing outside. It is all stuck together with super glue. I was keen to make sure that there were flat areas for based minis in the front and at the rear. My minor mistake was making the rear plinth/hill a bit too narrow after sticking on the rear wall section, hence cutting out a slit. When all the glue has dried I will prime it with a mix of mod podge and black paint. Then I will flock the top. I need to decide whether to make this snowy or green. I think that snow will cover more model making sins...

Greetings y'all! I'm starting this thread to use as a painting blog, to help catalog my journey, and to use as a source of ongoing motivation. I have a LOT of stuff I've been putting off, that I want to get through for a homebrew campaign I'm working on, and some warbands for Frostgrave, as well. So, I'll take any extra motivation I can get Once I actually finish pieces, I'll make sure to post them in that part of the forum. To start things off, I have a dragon I've been working on for a couple of weeks, and just got to the point where it's "good enough for now," although definitely not finished. It's easily my favorite piece I've ever owned, so I put off doing any work on it until I was "good enough" to do the piece justice. That is, until I realized that would never happen , so I decided to: 1) Do the darned thing 2) Do some work on it every day 3) Push myself outside my comfort zone to try new things 4) Be patient and forgiving with myself 5) To not freak out when I try something that I don't like, and just go ahead and fix it There's still a good amount to do to it (I have a list with 15 bullet points on it, and growing!), but I'm happy enough looking at it, and want to take a break to focus on some other pieces. I took some progress shots (though perhaps not as many as I'd have liked). So please, join me as we journey through my learning experience: I fully assembled the mini before putting down any paint. Here's where the mini was after a couple days work, about 4-5 hrs. I used an airbrush to give it a zenithal undercoat with black and white, and then to lay in the base coats of the red and blue. I then painted the underbelly and the wing-fingers with a brush. Here, I'm trying to show the work I've done (still fairly subtle, at this point) on building up the vibrancy/transitions on the red skin/scales. I was fairly happy at this point, as I could start to see that I might actually be able to paint this to the standard I want. The next day, I did some work on the face, horns, and blocked in the body spikes. I generally liked the mouth and tongue, but felt it was a bit vibrant. I thought the blue on the horns was alright, but also wasn't completely sold on it. Here's where it was after another `30min of work. Since I felt the tongue was too much, I did something about it! I did a very light glaze with a grey, just to knock down the saturation a bit. Looks better. I added some more blue to the horns, and still wasn't quite happy with it. Picked out the teeth, which is nice, easy bit of definition. And that eye!!! It looked much better than I expected, although that's the last time it would be that well defined... Here it is after another couple days of progress, building up that red (it takes soooooo long on something this big!!!!), as well as more work on the mouth/face. I'd accidentally painted over the eye (which becomes a recurring theme in this tale ), so I blocked in some color, just to separate it from the face. I added a glaze of 'RMP's fair skin' to the tongue, and now I'm lovin' it. Also added some fleshy-ness to the gums on the upper jaw (though it's a little hard to tell), and that was definitely another good decision. Here I continued to build up the red, progress is slow but steady. Not pictured (which is unfortunate, because it was a good learning experience) is my attempt to redo the horn entirely, to a scheme that was a transition of bone to brown to black at the tip...I was really unhappy with it. I had the bone starting around the eye ridges in at attempt to add more contrast and draw the viewer's eye towards the face, but it just looked awful. So I spent a good while redoing the horn and fixing the whole face. I'm glad I made that mistake, as I think the face looks much better than it did before I started on the horn. Part of that was adding in a new level of bright highlights. Here's the mini in some soft lighting, and although the picture is kinda blurry, it better shows the transitions throughout the red. I think this was also the point where I started working on shading the red, by applying a light blue-black glaze to the shaded areas, which really helped add some contrast to the piece. I had an accident that almost gave me a heart attack, where the figure seemingly jumped off the desk Luckily, I caught it before it hit the ground, and it sustained no major damage. It did separate where the dragon attaches on to the base, and although that was a little frustrating, it ended up being a happy little accident, as it made it MUCH MUCH easier to work on the base. I started by putting down some paints and pigments, until it was at a place I thought was ok. Also, the rock spire that it's curled around was originally about 6 inches taller, which I cut off to better see all of the dragon. So, I started work on sculpting a new top. I started by building up thin layers of cardboard with superglue, to level it off (it had quite a slant to it). Then I mixed up some greenstuff, and tried to match the overall flow and texture of of the rocks. Although not a perfect match, it's close enough to not be distracting. Mission accomplished!! The pillars were a part of the mini. And here's the beast in its current state. I painted the newly sculpted top to match what I'd already done, and left the pillars with a super quick drybrushing. I touched up the eye to look acceptable (it's on my 'to do' list), added some grass tufts to the base, and was happy to leave it be like this, for a time. The final pic is another attempt to 'more accurately' show the value transitions with the red, though the colors seem a tad washed out. I'll strive to make a post in here a few times a week, and eventually you'll get to see a completed dragon! EDIT: I forgot to mention that once the dragon broke away from the base (super cleanly, luckily), I took the opportunity to redo the underbelly on the whole model, darkening it up some. And along the neck, I experimented with wet blending for the first time! I've been apprehensive to try it before, but decided this was a good spot to experiment, as it's a large enough area, but felt less...consequential, I guess, if I messed it up. And I'm pretty pleased with the result! Next up: Frostgrave warbands for me and my brother!

Way back in 2016 a new supplement for Frostgrave was released called Forgotten Pacts which was the barbarian supplement. On the cover was a cool wizard riding a woolly rhino. Now they released a resin mini for that figure named Kornovik the Outcast. I never got that figure, but I did pick up Kargir Tundra Beast Rider 14632 at Reapercon, figuring that would make a decent base for a conversion. So... I started by cutting Kargir off the Tundra Beast. Easy enough. Then what? Well, since this isn't going to be an exact copy, but rather an "inspired by" proxy, I decided that the armored plates along the beast's back were cool, and worth keeping. But it still needs fur. Bring on the greenstuff. Thankfully fur is relatively simple to sculpt. Not the best pictures... I also bulked out the beast's belly, mostly to give the fur in the middle (yet to come) something to be supported by. In addition to some more fur, I'm also going to be adding some bags, a bow and quiver, and maybe some tack. Reins especially. I also need to better trim down the orc belly to fit the barbarian body. Originally I was going to use a Frostgrave barbarian body, but they're too small to convincingly fit with the legs... so off to the Bones box... where I settled on Grundor Hoardtaker 77219. He basically fits, and once I trim down what's left of the orc body and turn it into a fancy saddle, it'll all blend in pretty well I think. More to come!

Finished after a few delays from a project started in...December 2019, woops, are some more female residents of Frostgrave. All are from the official range from North Star Miniatures, other than two metal minis they are all built from the Frostgrave Soldiers II and Frostgrave Wizards II boxed sets, though they may have a few accessories from elsewhere (and the Cultists from the Frostgrave Cultists kit. The two metals: a Barbarian Apothecary and Barbarian Apprentice. The Cultists: Just plain Thieves: Obviously Wizards: K'ren, Slayer of Managers: A hero type: Those who could pass as Townsfolk: a Mule/Porter, an Arcanist/Old Woman, Town Cryer, local guide, and Apothecary/Potion Vendor.

Thank you @malefactus for recommending this guy to me so very long ago. He was absolutely perfect for my needs. Now it's just to bad I can't get a game in. Hmmm. his one eye looks a bit weird up close. Oh well, on the table he just looks confused. I'll need to look up who made him again in a bit, so I can put that info in the title.

I'm fairly happy with these two, especially how the bases turned out. Other than that, I'm still working on consistent lighting and how top make the picture look good on both the phone and on a monitor. Also I may need to get some sort of air purifier, because the amount of dust that forms and how ridiculously quick it appears, is well... ridiculous!

Here are some chronohounds for Frostgrave perilous dark. The description of the beasts is that they are hideous canines. My inspiration came from googling “ugliest dog”. Buckyball

Finished off 9 cavalry figures. They are all kitbashed from the Frostgrave female soldiers and wizards. They have been combined either with Gripping Beast Arab cavalry or with Perry Miniatures late medieval light cavalry or French dragoons. Some of the arms (in particular spear arms) are from the Oathmark elves. The Frostgrave minis have narrower waists and go well with Perry miniatures and with the gripping beast kit. The Perry napoleonic kit has a lot of blankets and furs on the horses, and the legs are separate to the torsos and have high boots. I was scared of painting horses but just went for ultra simple coloured undercoats and washes. I need one more lancer to have a unit of 10. May go for a bloke for balance, and to have someone who can tackle spiders and open jars.

I realised that I had so many Frostgrave soldiers painted up that i had quite a big army for games like Saga, Warlords of Erehwon, Or even Kings of War. Am going to have a war machine with Frostgrave soldier crew, and these lancers /light cavalry. These are the Frostgrave females, mainly, mixed with the legs and horses from Gripping Beast's Arab heavy cavalry. I cut the FG minis in half with a razor saw at the belt line and they fit the bodies perfectly. There is a Victrix cloak in there and the armoured rider has Oathmark elf arms, but essentially everything else (including the bits and pieces of luggage stuck to the horses) is from the Frostgrave females sprue. I will probably do a black wash on the riders (not the horses) and a couple of highlights. I need to do a snow effect base and then make up 5 more. The idea is to have a 50/50 male female unit but keep the light armour/wrapped up look.

Here's my final batch of new painted figures. Bones Giant Centipedes. A staple encounter for low-level adventurers. Still inspired by Reign of Winter. Sadly, Mr. Red got into the snow of Mr. Blue's base! Enjoy. C&C Welcome.

Kislev lives on in our hearts forever. I've continued my theme of building the Frostgrave: Ghost Archipelago Crew with a Steppes feel. The majority of these are built using bodies and arms from the Crew kit, with some Empire/Mordheim heads and other outsourced bits. The last batch wound up being more generic Pirate types.

My wizard Malak and his apprentice Grubb for my Frostgrave team. The wizard is Xi-Han is from GCT's Bushido game and then his apprentice is Lunk. This guy came with a bigger mini that is supposed to be a mutated him that I'll need to paint some other time. Fairly happy with the hat and mushrooms and frog. should have doen something more for his mustache though. It looks ok in person at least. Not super happy with my snow base results this time. Grubb here might see action as his alter ego Lunk from time to time so his base is just a stone base. Most of their crew is done as well. I'll get a group shot when they are all done. (Including the replacements for my lone casualty in our first real game.)

Malak breathed the cold air and smiled. This day had been long coming. The journey to the Frozen City had been difficult, wizards of his like had difficulty procuring supplies in the so called civilized lands, even in the rough towns near Felstad. Still, goblins could adapt to any situation and this one was no different. The eclectic band he had managed to scrape together stood with him now on the outskirts of the ancient ruin, ready to stake their claim at the riches that lie within. His first in command was his apprentice Grubb a Weiben goblin from the Reaping lands to the south. After him was Murdo an infantrygoblin of the Heartstabber tribe of Impact Crater in the Oldhammer Mountains, and a likely candidate for leadership over the rest should it be required. Polg and Mog were Manorheim goblins from just north of the Reaping lands and reasonably useful with a bow and axe, respectively. Gik and Moosh were from a nearby Bighead tribe. While both were foolish creatures, Gik was good with his bow and Moosh was quick with his feet and his dagger. They were also good with animals. Fearful and mistrusting of dogs they had brought with them giant rat creature they had tamed and named Squeaker. His final member was a brute of a goblin named Malg from the Thunderbolt Mountains. Louts and fool’s the lot of them, but competence cost gold, and that was coming soon. Besides if they die, at least he'll be able to buy better help on the next excursion. Unfortunately, Murdo had been less competent than hoped, dying shortly after impaling the "mouse wizard" on his spear. The Manorhiem goblins suggested calling in a trap expert from their village by the name of Grinner. Hopefully this one will prove more useful.

Here is antithetical recent model that I have finished in a push to clear my lead pile. He is an official Templar for Frostgrave. He will be used with my other Reaper models. Paint scheme kept simple

Just a quick speed paint to boost my painted numbers. These where painted back in March. The are all pumped up to pound some adventures. I do find it funny the similar stance for being created by 3 different manufacturers. I needed some more henchmen to fill out my frostgrave parties, especially some archers which I seem to have in very short supply. So i Found these while rooting through my drawer of 'I dont know where this goes and put a pretty basic paint job on them. I needed some minis to fill out the challenge for this month so here they are: I did try a little freehand on the soldier's shield and played with some of the brighter colors for the dwarf twins so they would stand out. In the end, basic minis to liven up the frostgrave maps Thanks for looking!
