This one took a long time and I'm not 100% satisfied with the print but I love her! First time I've picked a colour scheme from a Pinterest wedding board - I wanted to use my only Reaper Paint so far - Rose Gold! I do love her hair Disneigh is a Sagagram inflencer and professional mean girl but King Snurre spoils her rotten....Her matched sword/bucklers show her personal symbol of the burning pine ( descended from Loge and Laufey) and her companion Ratatosk Jr ensures she always has the best gossip in the Nine Worlds

Good evening all you Reaperphonics! So this miniature I just finished and photographed this afternoon, he's a Ral Partha Fire Giant, sculpted by Tom Meier back in 1977. I've always liked this Fire Giant, because even though he's not as popular or as well known as the Frost Giant from around that same time, he's still incredibly fun. I think my favorite aspect of this miniature is the fact he is a giant from back in the day, but he is barely larger than a modern Reaper man-sized miniature nowadays. When I remember to I'll have to do a size comparison photo for you all, always fun. So anyways, here he is: I wanted him to have coal black skin and flame-colored hair, so I think that kind of turned out okay. The one thing I was kind of doubtful about was his eyes. My doubt was whether or not to give him maybe red pupils, but ultimately decided against it and just gave him flaming eyes as well. I really love this figure. He's actually currently available at Ral Partha Legacy, but the one I painted was actually an old lead one I've had sitting around for a long time and had just never gotten around to painting. I should probably also put in a little plug here, the Ral Partha Legacy Chaos Wars Kickstarter is just about over, ends July 14th, so if you've got a love for classic miniatures and the sculpting of Tom Meier, it is definitely worth checking out!

Now that I've finished the Frost Giants I'm moving onto something a bit warmer, Fire Giants. Currently I've boiled, primed, and base coated skin on all 5. Several will probably need an additional skin coat but so far so good. Pictures in spoiler.

Also picked up during last week's sojourn to Atomic Empire...I didn't even realize he was half-off at the time. I like the subtle details showing his scale...I had never noticed his dragon cloak until I started painting him! The keyring in the snout is an inspired idea. Again, Giantslayer motivated the purchase, even if I never run it.

Technically this is a WIP since the base is unfinished, but the figure is done-ish..

From the first Bones kickstarter, or rather, a purchase I made soon after since I did not add on the "Fire Giant Warriors" subset. As I have written earlier, I am grinding through getting the older versions of the Giants painted, as the newer versions are both 1) better detailed, and 2) a lot larger. The idea is that if I do not get the older ones done before I start the newer versions, they will never be touched again. Which would be a shame, really. This is the only old version Fire Giant I have, as the ones from Bones 3 and out are the new size and design. I went with red skin and firey hair and beard. The red is new Citadel Screamer Pink, Wazdakka Red and Evil Sunz Scarlet. The steel is Scalecolor Black Metal, Army Painter Plate Mail Metal and Army Painter Shining Silver. The Series continues with the merriest mini of the lot, the Bones 3 Fire Giant Jailor, joining the Joten Horde of Thrym! Now, after sitting on my desk since pulling him from his plastic bag and dry fitting him together, I've been considering what to do with him. The first thing was the weird shaped integral base ... that needed to be fixed. So I dug around for a base to place his base on and settled for one of the large rounds from the same Bones kickstarter. Now, how best to expand upon the stone work of the integral base or was I going to have to dump it altogether and just use the giant. Well, I decided that I liked it a lot but the strange shape was a pain so I cut back the piece to the straight edges along one side. Then using some architectural samples I have a ton of, I proceeded to make new tiles and intentionally break them. They are 1/8" thick (3.2mm) and 2" x 2" in size. After cutting them into squares, breaking them into bits is easy. The rest was just a matter of doing tile work and gluing them in place. I grouted the piece with some Loctite Craft Glue. It's heavy duty and fills in nicely ... see below. After a little sanding to remove the excess glue and roughing the edges, I used a hobby blade and carving tool to clean and define some of the lines in the integral base to better match the new tiles. I also flipped one of the cut away segments from the front for the edge on the left side of the piece (near the top of the pic). Once that was dried and cleaned, I cleaned and glued the giant together and added him to the base. I have to do a little filling of gaps and I did glue the chain down to the tiles so it lays across the ground as if it is landing there. I just have to improve the pin for the dagger on his back belt and settle the keg on the hook off his belt. Then I can coat and prime him and begin his paint job. I'll stick to my Fire Giant Skin Triad ... As used with the Dungeons & Dragons Fire Giant I did last year. Of course, the Jailor of the Fire Giants won't be nearly as pristine as one of their Elite Guards, so you can expect a lot of grunge and prolly some soot. As always, Enjoy and Stay Tuned.

Oh that Werner, he's done it again! Let me introduce you to Vanja, the Fire Giant Queen - original size. She's a great size for an Ogre and as a Player Character. Bones once again! Great level of detail allows so much to be done to bring life to the face. Her armor reminds me of my SCA rig. Autumn hue, same palette as the Huge variation posted earlier. Underpainting/sketching used before paint. Plus! Pushed contrast. (Something a little bird taught me.) Gonna paint another. Enjoy.

For your viewing pleasure is Vanja, the Fire Giant Queen - without that hot, itchy cloak. The spot for her cloak was filled in and sculpted with Green Stuff to match her muscular anatomy. Bones, Basil! Bones! I am continually impressed with the Bones medium. High detail, resilient, and inexpensive. She is going into my Orcs and Goblins Oldhammer Army. Enjoy.

Giants are one of the types of monsters that I rarely use in my own game, but I happen to be playing in Storm King's Thunder, which is an entire module about giants. So yet again I find myself painting some monsters for my DM to use against me. This time it includes the Frost Giant King that I skipped out of Bones 3. I primed them with Reaper's Liners, Red for the Fire Giant Jailer, Grey for the Frost Giant King, and Blue for the Storm Giant. Much like the Sepia Liner, Red Liner doesn't seem to have the same adhesive quality as the Brown, Blue, and Grey Liners. Also, for some reason it smells really bad. However mostly it was the rubbing off issue that caused me to repaint it. After priming them over the weekend, I sat down tonight and spent about 2 hours getting as much done as I could, hoping to have them table ready for Wednesday. I've got another 2 hours or so tomorrow that I'll get to spend on them, so here's hoping...

The one good thing about being snowed in over a weekend is that I had nothing to do but paint. I ordered this giant a few months ago, but couldn't bring myself to get started. Turns out a random April snow storm was just the excuse I needed! My original plan was to make him albino, with skin like burned charcoal or ash. After I did the 2nd layer of greys, I decided that I really liked the stony look, and left it. I went with a black beard with orange tips to resemble candle wicks that have just burned out. Overall I think skin and beard combo make him look older/wiser/angrier. Critiques and advice are always welcome! Thanks in advance!

It has been a year since I have put brush to miniature, and while I was going to wait until I got some more kit (pin vices, scalpels, more paints, etc.) I had enough skin tones to start a small part of Vanja tonight. And I had the urge, the urge to paint dammit! She still has mold lines but didn't have any on her face so I felt okay starting to paint that first.

Gaming with minis! My oldest was in town and asked to play. So.... Lord Piergeron of Waterdeep pulled four 11th level death row inmates from his prison and forced them into the Fire Giant complex. Barbarian Erik the Butcher, Eldrige the gnome wizard, Father Bertrand the dwarf cleric and the Justicar ( my oldest loves the books). Erik is a mass murderer of priests, father Bertrand didn't know this girls were so young, Eldridge liked to do experiments on folks and the justicar was a vigilante. So at crossbow point they are forced in.... They enter the hall and surprise the first Fire Giant sentry behind the tapestry curtain ( silence spell helped).

Hey all, been plugging away at my kickstarter minis. I've done a few so far, but this is the first one I started working. I had to paint up my fire giant jailor, and it ended up taking some weird turns.

Although there was a tragic sealant malfunction, I managed to save the first set of minis I've completed in some time using some tips and tricks...and having a better can of sealant available to fix the foggies. Since I am still running Storm King's Thunder, I thought the first minis from the Kickstarter I would paint should be the Giants of Bones 3. First, we have the whole lot, with Sir Forscale striking a pose. Then, we'll just get frosty: The King: The Queen (clearly the one in charge) A Frost Giant standing guard: A more eager Giant: Then, we heat things up with the Fire Giants! The King says, "That knight went that way!" A Warrior pursues. I removed the spiked ball and chain from his belt...I wasn't a big fan of that look. I left the bases as a decoration. Another Fire Giant guard stands by, in case Forscale returns. The Jailor stands by, awaiting the Knight's return in chains. You may notice the Fire Giant Queen is missing...I thought she was too similar to the original, and wanted to convert her to a more active pose, since Bones are so much easier to cut. She's been set aside for now. Overall, I think the recovery process from the sealer foggies went well. Looking at the photos, the process de-flocked their bases more than anything, which I'll fix. Eventually.

Bones 3 had a bit of an unfortunate arrival time for me, coming in the middle of an unplanned move. It may have taken me a bit, but I'm finally getting started on some of the pieces! I even took them with me for some down time on our yearly beach vacation, though my set-up here is not very scenic: That was last week, and now they're a bit closer to completion, with some details and fixes, basing, and sealing to be done. Some Bones 3 furniture snuck in as well:

One would think I would tire of painting fire Giants. I love Giants of all stripes, but Fire Giants hold a special place in the stone I use in lieu of a heart. This guy was released in the lated 90's as part of the 25th anniversary line. I've got two of them, but this one is the only one painted, and he was completed earlier this year (I believe he was in one of my WIP threads in 2014 or so). Very simply painted to moderate tabletop, the base is a 2 inch fender washer, with the rest of it filled with Greenstuff and sculpted with both a tool and some tin foil. The rocks on the base really show up well in the photos, and I think it was Derek Schubert who posted up a wip to sculpt rocks FOREVER ago, and those are my results (thank you Derek if you read this!). He'll be used as a D&D monster as well as one of Prince Robu's bodyguards in Song of Blades and Heroes and possibly Dragon Rampant. The last two fire giant males have this same kind of grin on their faces, which makes me laugh. As always, C&C welcome!

Oh... my. I'm done. The first WIP of her appeared here in November 2013. Holy cow was she difficult to paint. I started her before I was really good at cleaning mold lines, as well as when I was really trying to go NMM for her. The final result is a miniature I'm very happy with, minus two gaps in her armpit area, and one mold line along the top of the spear near the "back tip." The base is greenstuff, cork, and some liquitex fine sand medium.

Hi guys, while still patiently waiting for the new, bigger fire giants, I really needed a couple of them for my D&D game to attack the party while they were in a dwarven fortress. These "giants" are really rather small, but they are really cool sculpts. I really liked the concept art for the miniatures (see here and here), so I tried to adapt the color scheme. However, I went with a darker skin tone which was not so clever from a contrast point of view. I hope you like them, anyway! Couple years old, but this was my first large size mini I painted. Had a lot of fun with it. I also imagined fire giants as having coal black skin, and I wanted to do something to make the face pop a bit because of how dark it was so I did some war paint type thing. Looking back now, there are a few things I'd like to redo on her. I've found that is a danger of taking pics of older minis, haha.

Adding to the eternal march of the Giants, my first completed pieces from the "Blood Rage" Kickstarter are the big guys. First we have the Frost Giant: A rather bestial Fire Giant, who apparently got the short end of the sealant on his crown...to be fixed, as I only noticed now: The Mountain Giant (my personal favorite and one of the reasons I had to back it, as a Kickstarter exclusive) The slightly less giant Troll: And some group shots: And one with Sir Forscale, for scale:

On one of my trips over the border to the lovely "Atomic Empire", I found a piece that will probably be announced for Bones IV now that I've bought it, "Skadi, Dwarf Goddess". At least she was discounted! She struck me as the perfect Giant rather than a Dwarf Goddess I may never use in an RPG encounter. I already had several female Frost Giants, and her whole forge theme seemed to strike me as more of a Fire Giant thing. So, here we have, Skadi, Fire Giant Priestess of the Forge!

I was lining up my larger humanoids in a row and made an observation, relating to the new larger giants coming out (in Bones 3), mass, and CR (using 3.x D&D/Pathfinder rules). So I thought I'd share my thoughts. :) It seems that for basic humanoids (without regeneration or other fancy rules that boost up their CR beyond their base mass) there's generally a fairly even progression. Which is there's a +1 to CR for every 5mm of mini height (1ft in game) beyond the base 28mm (5'7") mini size. Based off CR added to any class levels. +0 CR ≈ 30mm (6ft.) Standard size for human mini +1 CR ≈ 35mm (7ft.) "Advanced" template Orc Boss (77064). +2 CR ≈ 40mm (8ft.) Bugbears (77015). +3 CR ≈ 45mm (9ft.) Ogres (77105). I'm assuming the Bones 3 Ogres will be about the same size. +5 CR ≈ 55mm (11ft.) Giant-kin (Bones 1 Fire/Frost Giants). +7 CR ≈ 65mm (13 ft.) Hill Giants (77313). +8 CR ≈ 70mm (14 ft.) Stone Giants (77336). Ya they're a bit lightly built but it roughly works. +9 CR ≈ 75mm (15 ft.) Frost Giants (Bones 3). This seems to be about how tall they'll be. +10 CR ≈ 75mm* (15 ft.) Fire Giants (Bones 3). *As they're so wide they're a bit shorter they otherwise would be. So what do you think? If there's any merit to my line of thinking I hope we see some 85mm Cloud Giants (CR 11) and 95mm Storm Giants (CR 13) some time in the future. Bones 4?

As has been a theme this year, the minis I manage to paint will all count towards the resolutionary challenge. As per the resolutionary painting challenge guidelines, I will post them here, and link in my post in the challenge thread. /fanboy gush start/ Oathsworn Miniatures have some fantastic, old school miniatures, in the style of the period that Citadel Miniatures had soul, also known as "Oldhammer". Oathsworn is a cottage industry company, consisting of sculptor Michael Lovejoy and his lovely and talented wife, Jo (who is learning to sculpt as we speak). With 5 or 6 successful kickstarters under their belt, great communication and behind the scenes how-its-made guides and video clips, last but not least delivering on schedule, with consistently high quality every time. I cannot recommend Oathsworn enough. This is the kind of company I would buy almost anything from, just to support them and their work, even if I never got around to actually painting anything...something which I intend to correct in the coming months. /fanboy gush stop/ First out is the Fire Giant, or Efreeti if you like: With his asbestos loin cloth. I am trying out some new backdrops to get better pictures. So far so good. Did I mention that I struggle with flames? Turns out I not only struggle with, but actively detest painting lava-like crusts as well. Hence the not so impressive paint job. I simply do not have the patience. Which means that Balrog will be sitting around for a while before I take a stab at painting it... Metal, 40mm base.
