  1. Kid is super obsessed with "Scary Flying Shark" and zombies so I'm doing thr next best thing and painting the zombie shark. This is by necessity a quick paint. Started with priming last night
  2. Here's a couple of sea folk I painted in June, both for Reaper Challenge League. World Oceans Day was June 8th, and the mer-man my seasonal entry. Enjoy.
  3. This is my marid, one of the elemental scions.
  4. Part of my Beneath the Waves Project. WIP: https://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/88958-beneath-the-waves-by-glitterwolf/page/6/#comments Design: EPIC MINIATURES Printed on ELEGOO MARS.
  5. I got this one printed out in FDM from a kickstarter. In hindsight I should have chosen resin, it did help me decide to go for a resin printer myself. The printlines are visible and it's rough, I even used putty to smooth things out where I could. All in all a nice sculpt though. WIP here: https://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/88958-beneath-the-waves-by-glitterwolf/page/5/
  6. Howdy, Patagonian Toothfish... Kev!
  7. This past week I painted up the Goroloth (or "Sharktopus", as I like to call it. ) from the Bones 2, Expansion Set #1. I didn't do anything fancy, just painted it to a tabletop quality.
  8. I finished! Unfortunately he doesn't fit in my light box quite right so I had to just use my blanket as a back drop. The lighting could be better also. Overall I'm really happy with him. Spoiled for big pictures.
  9. I started painting Dagon a few days ago. He's very much still in the beginning stages. All my paints are MSP unless otherwise specified. Here's what I've done so far: Washed and blue liner-ed and started a base coat of Marine Teal. Then a little more work on the fins with Twilight Purple, Gem Purple, and Amethyst Purple but they have a long way to go still.
  10. Standby for massive dump in 3... 2... 1... Chopping this up into a few pieces for easy posting/consumption. Where I've been: Video games (Xumenicus#1118, if you're on Battle.net), bought a new house, running a fly fishing tournament for a treehugger non-profit, part-running my treehugger fly fishing non-profit local chapter, some other random stuff, and yeah -- here we are. I promise to paint more. Seriously. I just need to paint and sculpt more. I also need to fish more. And game more. I guess this is a thing: Apparently, I need deadlines in order to get anything done. This time around, since I couldn't make it to RC2017 (travel budget blown on BlizzCon), I aimed for a couple different challenges over at Massive Voodoo: http://massivevoodoo.blogspot.com/2017/07/mv-challenge-2017.html Objective: Make a water-themed base. No central miniature, no real focus -- just a base. And it has to be mostly water. Disclaimer: I'm not at all confident, or consider myself proficient with clear resin. I wasn't sure how good/bad/terrible this piece would turn out, so I didn't spend days painting this. It's got a few rough layers of highlights, a few rough layers of shadows, and basically I just wanted to turn something in, have fun doing it, and not stress about being good enough to win. The MV crowd is amazing -- I was just trying to get closer to touching the sun. :) Supply List: Wood, coping saw, cyano super glue, wire, green stuff, sculpting tools, paint, brushes, old brushes, Ease Release 200 Mold Release Agent, plastic Solo cups, nitrile gloves, popsicles sticks (fox mixing resin), Castin' Craft® Clear Polyester Casting Resin, small sheet of plasticard, duct tape, Tree House Studio Clear Acrylic High Gloss Coating spray, sandpaper (100, 200, 400, 600, 1000 grit), Woodland Scenics Lichen, Woodland Scenics Water Effects, fly tying thread, level for leveling the curing area I did a few sketches one night so I could figure out what to do, and this is where I ended up. I thought about doing a waterfall, or something cooler, but I was kind of in a time crunch, and only had 3 weeks, especially since things are still calming down from moving. [pic_00] Picked out a piece of wood from my scrap pile... [pic_01] Went to work with a coping saw until I had a pleasing, interesting shape... [pic_02] Learning from past mistakes with trying to get green stuff to adhere to wood, I opted to seal the wood this time. I used cyano, and 2 old brushes. It actually works really well as a wood sealer ( http://www.woodworkersjournal.com/cyanoacrylate-everything-you-need-to-know/ ), but you need to be extra careful due to the amount being used -- more of a chance to glue yourself to something, glue to project to something, and the fumes will sneak up on you real quick, and burn your eyes or nose. Fair warning. Be careful. [pic_03] I opted to use green stuff for the project. That's where my comfort zone still is, even though I'm trying to work more with Beesputty and ZBrush. The bit of twisted copper wire there is to support an additional column. Do an image search for "limestone underwater caves", and you'll see where I'm going with this. [pic_04] More... [pic_05] A little more... [pic_06] Starting the tree. Do a search on "limestone cliffs trees roots", and you'll see where I'm headed even more. [pic_07]
  11. It's been a while since I painted some Reaper mini's... but now that this little sweetheart crawled upon my doorstep, I really couldn't resist assembling him hoping to start painting soon. It'll be a little longer than 7 days I'm sure, and I have to hide him from my 3-year-old daughter... (to avoid her having nightmares)... but I'm glad I can finally start :-) It's also gonna be the first Bones fig I'm painting... and I'm pretty excited to try it out :-) Btw, compliments to the creators of this figure, what a lovely sculpt and concept!!
  12. Basecoated this guy to figure out what color scheme i wanted to do. I rather like the olive and red
  13. Hey guys back again and this time I painted the mighty verocithrax this amazing figure was very exciting to paint I decided to emulate Koi carp in painting the dragon I feel it fits well! As always comments are wanted and appreciated!
  14. After receiving my Krackotoans from Dragon Bait, I thought I'd work on a bunch of related undersea encounters (mostly from Bones)
  15. This is another fishy Tiik monster, this one Reaper's 77212, Tiik Baron. He was part of my year-end Conga Line of Finishing Up Half-Done Minis. There is an old WIP here. I was never quite able to make out what the thing on his left gills I painted red was. I think it might be a hermit crab in a shell. Earlier cousin Tiik figures here and here.
  16. While not the first started, this is my first finished from the Bones II Kickstarter. This mini is huge, the size of a small dragon. As usual, I am lazy-arsed about basing and have simply painted up the base as-is. Comments and criticisms honestly appreciated. WIP thread here.
  17. Normally I'd title this a little simpler but Marineal's gorgeous Tiik Champion is nearby and I'd rather people not confuse the two. So this is my Tiik Champion. Nothing fancy about the basing; it's on a 1.5-inch fender washer for extra stability, painted illusionistically like sand. WIP thread here.
  18. These are the two fish-goons that accompany the Tiik Champion figure. I painted one of them inspired by a goldfish (although, as usual, I meandered down different inspirations during the painting), the other by the common greenish lake fish of my middle youth. The whitish eyes are inspired by the slightly nightmarish cooked fish eyes on the whole fish served in my childhood. WIP thread here.
  19. I'm painting up some aquatic PCs and monsters for upcoming ocean adventures. I had primed and glued these to fender washers for bases last year, but only just got started painting them. At that time I was priming Bones with a mixed brown of Burnt Umber and Titanium White, then washing over them with Burnt Umber to bring out the details. These days I think using just plain Reaper's Brown Liner is simpler and works better. The two Tiik Warriors are based on one-inch washers and the Champion is on a 1.5-inch washer. One fish-man is going to be greenish. I'm not really basing it on any actual fish species, although I may refer to pictures later. I glazed a pure Iron Oxide Yellow on the bases to begin to build up a sandy color. Then I washed over that with a much less saturated color with a similar value, a fairly complex mixed warm brown a little like a flesh tone.
  20. I'm painting up a batch of figures for oceanic adventures as my husband goes "Ooh, I have to come up with something good for that!" This is the new Bones II wereshark, a version of 03625: Karnedge Gorefathom, Karkarion Boss. First I primed it with Reaper's Brown Liner. I started painting the sand under its feet with a layer of pure Iron Oxide Yellow, followed by a mix of that plus Titanium White, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, and just a breath of Phthalo Green. I then mixed up a subdued dark blue-grey out of Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Sienna. It's for drow flesh, but lightened up just a bit makes a good shark grey. I then mixed a much lighter version, not quite pure white, and laid down some thin color for the creature's belly and underparts.
  21. I was searching about for a fourth mini to slap some paint on for the RPChallenge this month and came across this guy in the beauty pageant thread. "He's a really neat sculpt," I thought. "I bet I could do some really kick-elf lighting effects with his lure." The banded mail greens are various blends of 29846 Spruce Green and some other assorted greens and yellows, which is a really fantastic nigh-turquoise color. Glazing a purple over it gives you a rather neat effect. A lot of the fishy-color is 29811 Turf Green, because why not? I have these Bones II colors sitting out, I might as well try them. I'm not as much a fan of turf green yet but I'm sure I'll find something for it eventually. Until then it's sort of a muddy green, the kind I often make by accident. I didn't get the contrast high enough to really pull off the OSL I was hoping, at least not in photos. (It's a little more apparent in person, where you can spin him around, but that doesn't mean I got the contrast right.) I also made the absolutely hilarious mistake of not looking at the official Reaper paint job, so I had no idea that thing in his mouth was actually a face. Oh well! It's a tongue now. The most hideous tongue the world has ever known.
  22. Welcome again friends to some more 4-5 hour tabletop painting. Darkshade Raider. This sculpt is metal and is so eerily thin that when you get it in your hands it is quite strange looking. When I examined this sculpt I didn't like her so much as a Dark Elf, but more as a Vampiric Assassin. I don't know why I thought that, but it probably has to do with the kama's. I went ahead and tried to give her the look of a (former) living drow but give her a touch of undeath. The quality of the casting wasn't so great with respect to the facial details as you might see in the online store so I had some work around to do there. Reaper colors: Gory Red, Sun Yellow, Vampiric Shadow, Spattered Crimson, Woodstain, Nightshade Purple, Dusky Skin Highlight, Violet Light, Blood Red, Yellowed Bone, Linen White, Pure White. Sea Lion. Bones and lots of mould lines, many of which didn't get cleaned up enough but I'm a bit over trying to pick over the mould lines. Adventured into some freehand on the creatures back to enhance the fish feel and tried to warm up the facial features to tie back into the lion/mammal feel. The base is from the Scibor Egyptian Ruins Terrain and was perfect for a sunken pillar. The pillar featured 5 scarabs and while 4 were covered as sea growth, the other was turned into Sebastian. I'm not much of a sculptor but I'm happy with how the crab turned out. Reaper colors: Driftwood, Redstone, Ultramarine Shadow, Nightmare Black, Tanned Leather, Woodstain, Nightshade, Oiled Leather, Dusky Skin Highlight, Pure Black, Yellowed Bone, Linen White, Rusty Red, Gory Red, Sun Yellow, Vampiric Shadow, Jungle Moss. Creature of the Blood Reef. Probably the worst Bones figure I've ever had/painted. The mould lines are really bad and are diffuse; this is on top of obvious sculpt imperfections that litter the figure...reference the right leg. I tried to paint around it as best as possible to minimize the defects. That said, I'm pleased with how the paint job turned out and will happily replicate that color scheme on other fish monsters. Reaper colors: Redstone, Ultramarine Shadow, Nightmare Black, Woodstain, Nightshade, Bright Turquoise, Blue Liner, Burgundy Wine, Pure White. Comments, criticisms and ideas on how to do it better next time always welcome from ANY level of painter. ~Adrift
